This is one of Smt. Sheela Unnikrishnan’s early choreographies which her students have been performing in many Bharathanatyam competitions for the last 15 years. And this piece has always fetched the first place, owing to its timeless choreography and the soulful lyrics and music composition by Madurai Sri R. Muralidharan. This presentation by the four dancers is a mark of their evolvement during SDN’s lockdown sessions.
In this song, the devotee declares that the beauty of Nataraja in Chidambaram, cannot be expressed in words!
He, who is the Lord worshipped by thousands of sages, is omnipresent in this Universe. Words can not suffice His eternally ecstatic Dance, says the devotee.
His bow like eye brows twitch this way and that way as He dances with the matchless Nine Rasas. His consort, Uma dances gracefully by His side and the Ganaas accompany Him on the music. The crescent moon, the Kondrai flower and His matted hair dance asserting the annihilation of sorrow. The tiger skin which adorns His waist, dances; the Universe dances; the devotees who seek refuge, also dance. The snake ornaments dance and the entire cosmos dances in Ananda! Words cannot describe His blissful dance in Chidambaram.

Lovely expressions Sai Smriti, Amazing foot work Nishkala, effortless dancing Sapthrishi as if Air were carrying you, and graceful movements Vishwa Shree! It was so refreshing to watching you all in simple traditional dresses, natural - It was all so organic - just captured the heart. The real aura and tejas of these young dancers shows out very well without the usual makeup. I love their leaps, jumps, leg-swings and the swirls of complete circles. Saptarishi excels in thANdavam.

I've been watching this choreography for years and only now have I really paid attention to the composition and the lyrics being translated into dance. I think it's too much bliss to even think about. Lord Shiva being portrayed in this way is too delightful.

Heavenly choreography, dancing and music.
Is the difference between the juniors and seniors that the seniors also teach? Between performances like this, "Mathe" Dharu Varnam, Shadakshara Kauthuvam and others, the juniors too have always come across as fully accomplished, thanks to guru imparting bharatanatyam to them all and perfecting them all. They've joined the other rathnas of SDN.
All the dancers here are again of SDN's exceptional standards, and I've been moved by the other performances of each of Srimathis Vishwashree, Sai Smriti, Nishkala, and Sri Saptharishi.
A special word about Saptarishi. Whether here or in Shadakshara Kauthuvam or in Sabha's Sankara Sri Girinatha (in a duet with Smt Meenakshi P.V.), even as Saptarishi keeps improving, he has always been very good, and has a very male elegance in bharatanatyam. This is possibly both because of himself and because Smt Sheela Unnikrishnan seems to know how Tandavam is to be danced by men, by following Appa Nataraja himself who is the source of Tandavam. Even the same steps performed by Saptharshi such as in Sankara Sri Girinatha feel different and masculine compared to how SDN's nartakis perform them, but both always in harmony. It is another exceptional accomplishment by SDN and a blessing of Nataraja. I hope Saptharshi will continue bharatanatyam and will inspire many Hindu boys and young men to learn the divine natyam. I previously thought I preferred our girls and women to perform bharatanatyam, and that only Deivams can perform Tandavam properly in male manner, but thanks to SDN having cultivated Saptarshi, I realise I was mistaken and now fully appreciate bharatanatyam by both.
