my style is "take whatever isnt glued to the fucking floor, use what i can, sell what i cant." especially in Fallout 4 where you can turn Sanctuary into your own personal fortress.
I would say, invest as soon and as high as you can into Gunslinger or Rifleman, since most of the weapons at the start will be non auto, and having +40% bonus damage to either by level 9 is no joke.
I am a PC player, so, don't know how you set the favorites on your game pad, but pretty sure when you open PipBoy Menu there are directions below which button does what, I think in your case to assign favorites is RB

yup, that's the way to go in F4, especially when you just start the game
Pressing RB on what you want to save to the directional pad. Then you can pick a slot
Your doing great! Fallout is a different beast to master. There is a lot of player choice.
Collect junk like Fans and toasters, also glue and pant stuff. You are going to need a lot of that stuff.
When in inventory user rb on stimpack or weapons to assign to your hot bar
A tip if you want, upgrade you lifegiver and toughness perks first. Also stay away from the main quest line a bit and build your character.
Spanks Friend! 😁👍

Yeah, minigun in Fallout 4 might as well be called airsoft.
