I feel like Dark Disciple probably had one of the most impactful stories too. Probably because it was directly lifted from a clone wars arc they didn't get to.

completely completely agree. Dark Disciple is a perfect wrap up to Ventress's story with so many amazing moments and a very cool story. It would be amazing for it to one day be animated. I felt like I was watching a clone wars arc while reading it.

I was wondering, during the Republic era, who funded the Jedi Order? For there Food, clothes, ships and fuel, since I could see them being funded by the Republic under the Military budget in the Clone Wars, however before they were Generals who did? Do you think perhaps the Republic had a separate Jedi fund that came from taxes or did it fall under some sort of Government branch?

I've only read a handful of books in the new cannon those being: Dark Disciple, Ahsoka, Heir to the Jedi, Lords of the Sith, The Force Awakens, and The Last Jedi.
Despite Ahsoka possibly being my favorite SW character I thought the book was only ok, but a must read if you love Ahsoka like I do.
Dark Disciple is some of my favorite SW content period. It's heavy on the force and it covers my favorite era being the clone wars. It's an excellent story about Quinlan Vos & Asajj Ventress.
I quite liked Heir to the Jedi. I wouldn't call it mandatory reading but I thought we got a great look into Luke's mind and development between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back. I also enjoyed the first person perspective.
    That's my take.
Just remembered that I also read Lords of the Sith. It's a super dope book taking place shortly after Revenge of the Sith. When the Twileks and Riloth almost got the best of Vader and Sideous. I would have loved to see this as a movie. Read it!

As a person who read quite a few Star Wars books, I would really recommend anything by Claudia Gray. Lost Stars and Bloodline have been some of my favorite books.
I for one was really interested in finding out more about the New Republic, and how it worked, and how things got to the point that we see in The Force Awakens. I also really love Leia as a character, so Bloodline was really everything I could hope for.
Inferno Squad really surprised me, I wasn't expecting much of it, but it was so interesting to see Star Wars from the point of view of Imperials who were undercover among rebel extremists. It was such a gray cast of characters and I loved it.
The Thrawn books are also awesome. They made me fall in love with him as a character and, even though he was an Imperial Grand Admiral, they made me 100% root for him to win, always.
Lords of the Sith was good to get into Vader's psyche, and see that the transition from Anakin to Vader was not as sudden as the movies make it seem. By the time we see Vader in LotS, he still has some of Anakin in him.
For anyone who has read these books, played the games, and read the comics, Resistance Reborn is a must-read. It features characters from the Aftermath trilogy, from Bloodline, from the Poe Dameron comics, from Inferno Squad and the Battlefront II videogame - and plus all the heroes from the sequel trilogy after The Last Jedi and its really fun to read.

Claudia Grey and Lost Stars really got me back into giving YA novels a chance after the years where YA novels are turned into edgy films.
EDIT: I personally think From a Certain Point of View is the best launching pad for anyone trying to get intlo Star Wars novels. These short stories are exactly what the canon novels are for now: supplementary reading for the wider galaxy.
Right now, most novels are told from the perspective of people who aren't in the films, the stories are more personal in nature and written by so many different people with different writing styles.

Now we have more films and series then we could ask for and the books don’t fill the same massive gap in world building that existed prior.

Claudia Gray has been a revelation and is the best new Star Wars author. So many others (Johnston, Golden, Wendig, etc) have been great, but she's easily the best of the new ones and I hope she keeps writing Star Wars for a long time to come. Aftermath gave a satisfying ending to the Galactic Civil War and gave me some new characters to fall in love with. It was great reading Zahn again and I can't wait to read his new Thrawn trilogy.
I do agree that I do want more meaningful books, but I'm not sure that's going to happen in Disney's Star Wars universe. If there's one thing that I truly wish would happen in book form is that Legends is reborn and continues that universe. Marvel and DC are constantly writing stories in different universes, Star Wars can do it to. I think it was the right decision by Disney to make their own universe and even retire Legends for a time so the focus could be on their new stories, but I do think it's time to revive it. That way, books in the new universe could continue to support the movies and games, while books in Legends could tell these grand, sweeping stories that so many of us grew up with in the 90s and early 2000s.

As someone who never got into the EU and is only now coming into supplemental stories with new canon, I 100% agree with your statements about the books. I have LOVED a lot of the stories we got (Bloodline in particular but also Phasma and Alphabet Squadron) but I want to experience getting the next book in a longrunning series that I've been with for ages. I'm optimistic that Alphabet Squadron will be a good first stab at that sort of thing since it's not directly related to any of the movies and isn't doing any "Journey to..." work but it's also not the X-Wing series that I've heard so much about. I really hope that since the Skywalker Saga is ACTUALLY OVER the books will have the room they need to really breathe and get weird with it.

Yeah I have enjoyed the books so far and kind of like the gap filling role they have had thus far but I totally get why some would be a little frustrated with them not really pushing things forward that much. I kind of got a little frustrated with Resistance Reborn for that reason. Even though it had a massive amount of connections and it indeed was practically a love letter to the canon junkies. It was also at the same time one of the most vague stories we have gotten thus far in my opinion. It was clear that Rebecca Roanhorse didn't know what was going to be in the movie and was thus setting up things so the book couldn't contradict anything that would potentially happen in TROS.
I have enjoyed most of them though and Claudia Gray's books have probably been my favorites.

What you can do is go to the Del Rey Wookieepedia page and they have all the books listed in order of which they came out. They all do kind of jump around the timeline and it really depends on what era you are most interested in. The Endor to Jakku time period is the era in which the novel series they have so far are set. Wendig's series is a little mixed but the Alphabet Squadron series is going on right now and has had only one book out so far and people seem to really like it thus far.

I've always stuck to just the movies and tv shows, but I decided to give a couple of the more recent books a read. Bloodline did a great job of laying the groundwork for the Sequel Trilogy and fleshing out the New Republic. I was disappointed with Ahsoka. I love the character, but the book felt shallow to me and the only thing it accomplished was explaining why Ahsoka's new lightsabers are white.

I've returned to SW books after many years absence. Really enjoyed Revan and Bane again along with many others but the choices are so vast. I have very poor eyesight in my old age and audiobooks/TTS are my savior. Searching and reading page after page of book descriptions on endless websites gives me such headaches I decided to just ask someone a question. Setting aside the new trilogy books, what are some books that are stand alone reads? New Jedi names that came and went with a single book? Is there a term for those kind? Sorry to be so wordy :)

Alex, I'm currently reading through James S.A. Corey's Expanse books. I just found out that they wrote a Star Wars book called Star Wars: Empire and Rebellion: Honor Among Thieves. Have you happened to read it, and if so what are your thoughts on it? I've read through the Darth Bane books and some of the X-Wing books based on your recommendations. Also, on speaking of the X-Wing books, are the later books that aren't written by Michael Stackpole as entertaining as the one's that he wrote?

I am okay with the books taking a sideline to more movies and shows since those are the things I'm focusing on with Star Wars. Nothing against people that read, I just never got into it because I just never did. It was always made into a chore for me in school, and part of it is also because there were never any books that grabbed my attention, I'm sure a Star Wars one would actually do that, but you're not exactly going to be asked to explore the concepts of a Star Wars book as a class assignment. Movies and shows, those are for me, and I haven't been completely offput and disappointed yet, even the silly, canon gray, LEGO shows have been surprisingly entertaining.

It means a lot to me that several authors aren’t afraid to include gay and bi/pan characters in their novels, especially since the most we’ve gotten on the big screen is a two-second kiss, between two characters most of us couldn’t name with a gun to our head, that can be easily cut out for release in more homophobic countries.
