  • Stepney's visit to the North Western Railway is coming to an end and everyone will miss him, including Sir Topham Hatt. However, the topic soon changes as there is an engine shortage and the only spare engine available is a Class 40 diesel. The engines promise not to increase tension or cause a situation with the visiting diesel but they're not happy with the news. The big diesel, whose number reads D261, arrives the next day and he immediately insults the engines, stating them to be out of date compared to him.
The engines are furious by the diesel's attitude, but they cannot think of a plan for revenge. However, there is no need for a plan though as the next day, the wind blows an inspector's hat off his head and into D261's air-intake vent while he is being inspected and prepped for a performance run. This causes him to suddenly break down just as he is about to take the express, much to his fury and to Stepney and Duck's amusement. As the two tank engines shunt D261 into the sheds, the inspector sees his hat jammed in the diesel's air-intake, but Sir Topham Hatt is more concerned about the train being late. Stepney (who has anticipated a long run on his last day) is asked to take to the train with Duck. Pulling together, the two engines set off down the Main Line, passing through Edward's station and struggling over Gordon's hill. The two engines then, in record time, reach Crovan's Gate where Gordon waits to take over the train from there.
Stepney leaves the next day and the engines bid him a fond farewell, hoping to see him again soon. Meanwhile, D261 creeps sulkily away leaving only two things to remember him by; a rather nasty smell and a battered bowler hat.
