I played dst a lot, and when I tried ds for the first time, what really bugged me was not being able to cancel animations, like, when you intiate an attack or anything, you can't just back off.
Another thing: Fires in DS spread almost instantly instead of being extinguishable. This can be detrimental to your base or any forests you may be in for charcoal and is very annoying.
Placing a thermal in your backpack on DS allows you to remove the temperature cap from yourself, which allows you to overheat in winter to cap your temperature well.
for thermal stones, you forgot to mention that in any game that isn't base DS, it won't create light when red hot and the way they temper tamper are completely different (like it's really hard to heat up a thermal stone to red hot in ROG during the middle of winter, and they'll passively turn blue if left unchecked). in base DS they still glow and idk why they changed that feature. i'm a super nerd for thermal stones i know
Hey me again, i had thought more of differences Insanity effects happen much faster and louder, the screen effect happens faster too A lot of crock pot meals dont exist The piggy back in solo with no dlc slows you by 20% (instead of 10%) The caves arent colder than the surface (so you can overheat in the caves in summer) Resorce regenaration dosent exist (trees dont grow back same with cactus, reeds, boulders and mushtrees i think The oasis dosent exist Dragon fly is a seasonal boss (antlion dosent exist) When having a light souce, the light comes out of the item and not the survivor (best seen with willows lighter) Set pieces with clockworks are rarer (from what i seen) You cant unsmolder things with inventories (smorlder only appears in summer in solo) Also yea the fire spreed You can stop a lanter in your hand, also its effects dont dissapear when picking it with your mouse There isnt a celestrial portal (so no easy character switching) The crafting ui Ok thats all... for now
man this video took me back lol, was fun to see how many things I thought were still the same in DST. Hammers not needing the science machine, I still catch myself forgetting I can craft one a lot.
Dragonfly used to be a seasonal boss and not a set piece. She also used to burn whole bases in a game where you can’t put out smolders as they don’t exist in solo…
I actually have mostly only played DS haha. I got them both on sale last year, but haven't touched DST much yet. Tbh it's kinda weird how no one else seems to be playing the single version!
it's usually because there's just a lot more content to be found in dst and also multiplayer. For my case tho, i just don't have the funds to afford ds with its dlcs and dst is just more bang for your buck
Never played DS but I heard the dragonfly drops from the sky randomly during summer in that game and that scares me so much lmao, I know the HP is nowhere near the same as in DST but still if that really does happen then I'm never playing DS
I cannot remember the last time i built a meat effigy, i hardly use touchstones tbh. The thermal stone change just makes no sense and creates needless resource upkeep on an honestly expensive item in the early game, flint doesn't grow on trees, well at least that early on. I'm pretty sure you can also get the blueprint for wax and bundling wrap from any source of blueprints, though this is probably only applicable to DLC's like Reign of Giant's tumble weeds or from trawl nets or treasure X's in Shipwrecked. I quite enjoy the cave changes in DST and its criminal they haven't been backported, I can live without the obviously DST exclusive content but if they gave us bundling wrap why not merge caves and ruins together and make the world gen a touch nicer?
I hate that they simplified every aspect of the game but made most of the bosses and lategame content stupidly strong with thousands of HP. Basically boss raiding RPG, not survival anymore
Part of the charm of DS was the fact that yeah, a lot of the bosses would come to knock you off feet (I should have mentioned that in the video, bugger) but now that they're optional raid bosses it does change the pace of the game a lot away from survival. Not that it's a bad thing! It just captures a different vibe :)
supposedly, compasses in dst will reveal other players who have a compass in hand, which is more useful than vaguely pointing out the direction you're facing
There are various small changes as well such as Damage calculation differences for gunpowder is an obvious one , an attempt to prevent as much damage cheesing in DST. Grass geckos obviously dont spawn in solo , meaning your grass stays lol. The mushrooms in the main map in solo grow into full mushtrees during a full moon ....odd that they removed this in dst. A large difference is the farming. DST got a rather large farming overhaul meanwhile solo continues to have the classic style farming. You only briefly touched on it but its such a massive change. The way attacks work is different on enemies as well , kiting can feel a bit different between the games (this may be due to lag prediction however) Solo also doesnt have the world regrowth function. Some elements wont respawn then if destroyd like rabbit burrows , lumpy evergreens , reeds , and some other things are thereby finite (unless you do world hopping) There are other mechanical differences as well such as the way fire spreads. I cant recall the exact specifics but it spreads differently in DST. Also trees happen to burn alot longer in DST rather than solo. Armor is a huge difference as well. In simplest terms armor in solo stacks together. A log suit and a football helmet gives waaay more damage reduction in solo. In DST damage is simply shared across all items but the protection value doesnt stack together. You can tank really heavily in solo. Another funny change would be hounds cant swim in solo. So they always spawn on land and come towards you instead of every direction like in DST. In shipwrecked they are replaced by crocodogs which can swim. In dont starve solo the mechanics for mining/chopping/etc are different! In solo if you spam the action key or click repeatedly you can chop/mine faster than if you just hold the button. Theres also the forced permadeath in solo , which im very glad isnt forced in DST. This is especially worth noting for new players. Boss spawning methods are changed too. Bearger for example will eventually despawn in solo rather than hanging around like it does in DST. Moosegoose in solo does not spawn near a moosegoose nest in solo as the nests dont exist in solo. Instead it simply appears during spring like the other seasonal giants. And of course the dragonfly being a seasonal spawn. And not to mention how massively different the fight is compared to DST. Spiderqueen is noticeably easier in solo as well. Not only less health but no more nurse spiders to heal her. I believe she also spawns spiders much faster in DST. And of course many many more! Gosh I have played waaaay too much of these games.
You can actually still spam click in dst to make mining and chopping and stuff faster to do. It greatly speeds things up and quite frankly, makes chopping trees actually reasonable (bearger still way better tho)
i think beefalos needed a mention. the inexiatence of the beefalo bell and also the fact they don't follow you in the caves (i think) makes them weaker. ah you can stack damage absorprion in ds, while in dst it is not possible.
8:40 i see rock monsters in the overworld... is that old fotage or a change in games cause im pretty sure you cant bring them to the overeworld anymore
Shoulda mentioned that! Yeah rock lobsters can follow you to the surface. I don't know if its still a thing but they would reproduce so much they could glitch out and walk over the water. I have fond memories of that...
The way dst servers are usualy already... Minecraft sleep multiplayer mechanics would totaly overcomplycate everything. More then 2 people at the same time on the same server will never work together perfectly. I ve multiple times seen god wigfrids on the servers , living in their own corner of the map ,getting their cool bases all build up , while we , useless plebeans are strugling to cooperate. I ve met a man building capitalism , throu asking us for resourses to build a shop needed to sell us resources.(comunism won) I ve acidently created a trap for new joining players(probably new players too) while cynchronising perfectly with a god tier maxwell (i named a world "please join" or something like "greetings, you are wellcome!" That one time , i acedentaly orchestrated the server vipe.(it was time of a winter feast . i was wendy , there were other people , including the cocky self aware wes and somewhat new to the game webber. I was keen on getting some good presents , and was only lacking manure(or pinecone , i am not sure) and decorations. I helped webber , and explained to him how to maximise spiderproduction and upgrade nests , while i was harvesting spiders for cookies. Then there was a tier 3 spider den(2 of them actually) and wes died(surprise surprise) so naturaly i told wes to haunt the spider nest. What could go wrong? Surely we will be able to take on the spider quin by day 13 or so on a somewhat casual (in a way that we wasnt rushing) server . She would be at our base , so we will easely outnumber her with abigale by our side! We didnt. Abigale fall first. Soon all but webber died one by one. Then he helped few of us get back , we were getting ready for ba... wess spawned the second one. He never stoped haunting. We all died. Webber too , in a futile attemt to kill the darn thing. Woopsie.) So yea in a game so chaotic , and filled with people with strange grand plans and lack comunicative skills , where typingkills you so fast i learned speed typing just throu playing it , apperantly it would be a bad idea to add minecraft sleep system. Gosh. I unintentionaly sidetracked so much , that i told you most of my major dst fun stories. Cool. Have a nice one , coment-reader!

That is the one that always catches me off guard whenever I play solo-ds. Holy heck is fire DANGEROUS in that game!
3:12 ah yes, repairing a rock with a sowing kit that makes sense.
Wdym? I repair my ice boxes after WX-78 ate them using sowing kits!
Placing a thermal in your backpack on DS allows you to remove the temperature cap from yourself, which allows you to overheat in winter to cap your temperature well.
Oooo thanks hyu! I never knew that! I noticed that thermal stones did feel weaker in DS and I suppose that's why!
that is a bug not a feature
for thermal stones, you forgot to mention that in any game that isn't base DS, it won't create light when red hot and the way they temper tamper are completely different (like it's really hard to heat up a thermal stone to red hot in ROG during the middle of winter, and they'll passively turn blue if left unchecked). in base DS they still glow and idk why they changed that feature. i'm a super nerd for thermal stones i know
Isn’t it that in dst the colour is based on the world temperature compared to the stone temp? But in dst it’s just based on the stone temp?
yeah, the color in rog is based on the world temperature, and the stone is independent in dst
man for some reason it feels to me that solo ds is more about survival while dst is about killing every boss in the game as fast as you can
Same, this is why i play the island adventures mod, shipwrecked dont have a ton of bosses, but make feel like surviving in real life
Hey me again, i had thought more of differences
Insanity effects happen much faster and louder, the screen effect happens faster too

When having a light souce, the light comes out of the item and not the survivor (best seen with willows lighter)
Set pieces with clockworks are rarer (from what i seen)
You cant unsmolder things with inventories (smorlder only appears in summer in solo)
Also yea the fire spreed
You can stop a lanter in your hand, also its effects dont dissapear when picking it with your mouse
There isnt a celestrial portal (so no easy character switching)
The crafting ui
Ok thats all... for now
The character switch in single player must be done by beating the advanture mode twice!
man this video took me back lol, was fun to see how many things I thought were still the same in DST. Hammers not needing the science machine, I still catch myself forgetting I can craft one a lot.
They've backported a lot of stuff from DST to DS but there's still so much they haven't, it's a trip :)
Dragonfly used to be a seasonal boss and not a set piece. She also used to burn whole bases in a game where you can’t put out smolders as they don’t exist in solo…

Thanks man this was really informative and helped me learn stuff i had no idea about, such as repairing a thermal stone. Keep up the great work man!
6:13 if you and your chum will have a compass equipped, you will be able to see each other on the map
Rare occurence,,, but yeah they do have a use :) Ish :)
Never played DS but I heard the dragonfly drops from the sky randomly during summer in that game and that scares me so much lmao, I know the HP is nowhere near the same as in DST but still if that really does happen then I'm never playing DS

I wish the ruins were still under the caves, but I understand why they changed it for multiplayer
Also in base ds you only get one pig skin from hammering a pig head instead of two!!!!
I hate that they simplified every aspect of the game but made most of the bosses and lategame content stupidly strong with thousands of HP. Basically boss raiding RPG, not survival anymore

Theres DS excusive characters
The worlds are smaller
