I like the white outline, specifically because it provides a great sense of contrast against the new dynamic lighting that Color Splash brought to the series. I've gotten so used to it that it's hard to imagine how it would look without it, and how easily it would be to see Mario against the background.
I do think it's a bit thicker though, and I wish it was about half the width it is now. It'd add contrast, but not remain a large part of the design.
I get that the whole point of the video wasn't necessarily the existence of the white outline on its own, but rather what it symbolizes.
I won't say much on the topic, as I don't want to distract from what's truly important, but I'm proud of how the series is progressing. Even though I liked Sticker Star, I miss the soul the series had in 64 and TTYD so much, and I wish for it to come back. Color Splash may not have been the same thing, but it was a great step forward, and The Origami King looks to be another step forward, and a greater step forward than ever. Eventually I feel like the series can return to the place it once was. But for now... it's time to talk about what's truly important-
_Did you know that Paper Mario's design, especially in the art from TTYD onwards, is inspired by small Mario in Super Mario World?_
The black dot eyes, the black rim (in 64's sprite), the circle body, the lack of legs, and stubby arms at his sides... it all lines up with Small Mario's sprites in Super Mario World!
His walking animation is very similar as well. The arms don't move at all, but the feet move, and there are 2 frames. Up and down. TTYD and SPM add smooth movements to add more weight and life to Mario, but his walking in 64, Sticker Star, and Color Splash all match his walking in Super Mario World. It's such a small detail, but it's something they've stayed consistent to throughout the entire series. Mario certainly isn't supposed to _be_ Small Mario sized in the series, but his design is without-a-doubt based on it.

It's, well, an okay game. But it's not FE. If you want an ok Persona-like anime story, go ahead and pick it up.
But classic FE has always been about the gameplay. I really wish people wouldn't sleep on the games from the Super Famicom, GBA, and GC/Wii eras, because they are absolutely fantastic.
Fire Emblem Awakening and especially Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valencia (which too many also slept on) are kinda the last we saw of that old spirit. Unlike Super Paper Mario (which was 12 years ago, and after which, the series director got put to work as a producer on an FE card game...), FE Echoes was only a couple years ago, so I hope that said spirit isn't snuffed out.
(also while we're on the topic of IS, I really hope they also revive the Panel de Pon series proper, and don't censor it in the US this time. The first game is actually available on Western versions of SNES Switch Online right now for the first time officially, so I encourage yall to give it a shot if you like puzzle games!)

I agree! TTYD and Super were like puppets. While very limited with their animations, they at least give their animations smooth tweening thus making them feel more alive! • @Whispernyan
      @Whispernyan 4 роки тому +6

Overdone with the series? There's only a single released game that focuses on Paper Gimmicks. Even if you include Paper Jam (where the white outline started), that didn't even focus on the paper part.
Even Sticker Star had minimal focus on Paper. Yes stickers existed but literally nothing about them would be different if they weren't stickers and just physical objects.
Even if you include Origami King that's 2/6 games with a Paper Gimmick, overdone with the Series is a bit of a stretch.

The N64 Original had a few (Goomba hiding ON THE SIDE of a sign, for example) and TTYD had Paper Transformations, but that's about it. So, they're safe in everyone's opinion.
Super Paper Mario had nearly none from what I've played.
Paper Jam relied on the fact that Paper Mario was... Paper.
Sticker Star I can't really say, since I haven't seen a lot of it, but...
      Color Splash has a ton.

Honestly, I could do with the white outline so long as they just stopped making the whole paper shtick the whole idea of the game. In TTYD, they did this sort of thing correctly. Yes, you were able to fold into different shapes and whatnot, but it was known as a curse and not something normally possible. Now we've got origami hats to wear, stickers that work like spell scrolls, paint and paper shreds that can bend reality, and Toads folding up left and right. In Super Paper Mario, if they used the current design philosophy, you cannot convince me that they wouldn't have made Count Bleck have some shitty paper pun for a name, and have the void be a giant paper shredder. I feel like the reason the games have declined in quality is because they go against everything the games used to be. TTYD had intriguing plot, engaging characters, neat mechanics, as well as witty dialogue. Now we have "Stop evil Paper Man! He is evil!", Shy Guy #824 and Toad #3.71e308, restricting attacks to consumables only, and base-level jokes like Toad=Weak, Luigi=Scared, and Bowser=Ugly. The reason the games feel stupider and cheaper is because the games have been dumbed down to such a degree that even someone with an IQ beneath 70 can see how simple they are, is because they have without a doubt been intentionally dumbed down in an attempt to make it marketable to kids, despite them currently making up less than half of the Paper Mario fanbase.

Everything before Sticker Star made me think I was playing as Mario. Now? Just some knock-off papery cut-out of him.
You wanna know one of the things they could've done if they wanted to make people at least somewhat happy with the direction?
You know how Mario would use shapeshifting to tell someone something in SMRPG? They could have him do the same thing by having him fold, unfold and look exactly like the character he's trying to tell someone about.

The main problem with Paper Mario is that rather than the original Japanese title of showcasing a Mario story shown inside a paper aestetic, they started relying far too heavy on paper as a gimmick. I don't know why they need to shoe horn it in. The main appeal of N64 and TTYD Paper Mario era was travelling with Mario in an RPG setting alongside a cast of friendlies that are normally your enemies in other Mario games. Each with their own unique personalities. Partners are the bread and butter of classic Paper Mario. I don't see why the devs ever thought we'd prefer paper gimmicks vs seeing enemies turned friends in a charming package. Paper Mario also even had that benefit going for it over the Mario and Luigi rpgs. Traveling with a cast is so much more appealing than Mario and Luigi duoing everything down.

    Wall of text ahead warning.
Okay, I'm gonna say this because every time I see one of this critics towards the white outline in Paper Mario, they seem to focus exclusively on the aesthetic part, despite there being another, more objective and meybe even more important aspect of this outline: The outline *dictates* how the characters move.
Take a look at how Mario walks in TTYD and in CS. You can see that he's a lot more fluid in the former. This is because of how the character's sprites are designed. (Which is derived from the outline, I'll get to that.)
In the older games (except the original paper mario) and SS, every character's body parts were a different sprite, which were put on top on eachother to form the character. (Think of those old flash animations or... Idk, the next best thing I have is Rayman and Plants vs. Zombies). The thing is, this allows for fluid movement without soe of the common issues this style of aniation has (Like when a character changes angle or turns around, since in Paper Mario everyone is purposely 2D and can flip without major issues, and when the character needed to move dynamically as in Mario with the curses in TTYD, it would just use a complete sprite of the chaacter and then revert Mario to its original form.) Even in Paper Mario 64, where most characters were single sprites, some of the more complex designs were done with this technique (Like Bowser and Tubba Blubba). However, this comes with a drawback, and is that the entire can't have an outline covering their bodies, because the white (or any other color) whould appear on top of the body and overlap with other parts (It's hard to explain but easier with an example, look closely at Draggadon's head in Color Splash and you'll notice that the white outline goes on top of their body, as opposed to almost every other character in the game). What this means is that every animation must be done in frames, which difficults the fluidity, as more inbetweens would be needed to convey the effect. Finally, for some reason, the white outline also seems to cause less fluid animation. Mario seems to have a lot more walking frames in 64 than in CS.
In all honesty, while I don't mind the outline aesthetically, I feel that its use has important consequences in character movement, which I never seem anyone to acknowledge in this kind of critiques and instead simply focus on the more subjective side of what it means. As a final thought, I'd like to point out that the white outline seems to be a subproduct of the recent overemphasis of the series in paper, absent in Sticker Star, (Justifiedly) invented in Paper Jam and then brought up again in Color Splash.
Tldr: The white outline doesn't have much impact in the general aesthetic but it has on the animation. (And shouldn't be mutually exclusive with what made the first Paper Marios so good)

  • @seereebee
    @seereebee 4 роки тому +1

The first 3 Paper Mario games focused on being solid RPGs first and foremost. Story, unique characters, etc. The paper gimmicks were secondary. Only used occasionally for an ability or visual gag. In the newer games, the paper gimmicks are literally the sole focus. It really ruins any and all immersion. Instead of focusing on an engaging story they focus on trying to be funny and meta 24/7. While jokes are fine sometimes, you need serious moments to balance it out.
    The older games: Paper Mario
The new ones: Mario, but paper.

I think the charm of the 1st three Paper Mario games comes from how it feels like you're immersed into a story book. The moment you start the game , a book is opened and the narration immediately draws you into the game's world. The visuals feel like you're controlling a character in a story and any wacky visuals you see, you can accept as being part of that game's world. The games felt like "Mario's Story" and I believe that's what the original title was called before it became "Paper Mario"
Sticker Star and games after get too meta with the paper aesthetic. The white outline for one makes it feel like a realistic Sticker you'd buy off Etsy or Redbubble. It literally feels like the playtime scenes with Andy from Toy Story. Paper Mario is being dragged around in some kid's toybox and that's why you see realistic items such as a plunger, desk fan, and scissors. These items are why the kid has around the house to aid Mario. Coins are used since the kid ran out of stickers for you to use and has to buy more. The kid also ran out of boss ideas so you're now fighting the child's Colored Pencils, Tape, and Rubber Bands. The game isn't "Mario's Story" anymore. On one hand the games feel nostalgic since this is something I'd probably imagine as a kid, but this immersion makes me feel uncomfortable since I play a videogame to escape reality. So if i want to play Origami King , Sticker Star, or Color Splash; then I just have to buy a white outlined "Paper Mario" sticker and have it fight office supplies or other "Stickers".

All of the bosses that were shown in the trailer are materials that make up the fabric of the story book world of Paper Mario. Now, Mario needs to confront the makers of his invaded world to change things for the better.
Maybe Oli wanted to make everything become origami so that he may have substance and 3D form; and then move on to the next world if he succeeds, that of the 3D Super Mario games.

Even if they actually wrote in a heartwarming little story with King Ollie and his sister, I don’t think it would have the same impact as the events from previous games after ridiculous bosses like that. Worst case scenario it would be like Sonic Lost World where it’s clearly trying to do a thing with these characters, but also includes stupid shit like Cubot or the Deadly Six which leaves no time for them to actually do anything meaningful. These kind of things just indicate that this game and its content is clearly not meant to be taken seriously, if there is anything heartwarming it it, it would probably be fanservice more than anything else.
