  • EMDR. It's become an insanely popular therapy over the last few years. Originally developed as a trauma recovery tool, EMDR is often touted as being appropriate or effective in many more clinical circumstances. But ... is it? Is EMDR an anxiety disorder recovery treatment? This week I'm joined by Florida therapist Anne Thomas to talk about EMDR, what it is, what it isn't, and how it might be applied in the context of panic disorder, agoraphobia, and other anxiety disorders.
The takeaway here is that EMDR is not going to magically fix your anxiety problem simply by moving your eyes back and forth. There's still real-world work to do as usual. But there may be instances where EMDR can be useful in addressing some of the negative beliefs about yourself and about past events that can be real obstacles in recovery. Expectations and a clear sense of what EMDR can and can't do, are always going to be important as they would be with any type of therapy.
In this episode we mentioned EMDRIA, which is the organization that trained Anne and trains other EMDR therapists.

Emdr therapy didn’t do anything for panic for me. There is no other way of doing it other than going out and doing the exposures and learning how to just get on with your day even if you are panicking. Emdr doesn’t do anything for that

I'm currently doing EMDR as someone with panic disorder (and an avid listener of The Anxious Truth podcast). And it's not a placebo. It does work in slower steps than with someone with a specific trigger memory, but I've had surprising sessions and great results.
Yes, I'm still doing exposure, breath work, somatic exercises, and plenty of coping strategies during triggered moments, but after my first session I passed through what should've been a triggering moment with no anxious feelings at all.
It's exactly what they say in this video. It's a TOOL to desensitize yourself so exposures aren't AS hard.
Good luck to everyone struggling out there ❤

As a therapist of 20 years, emdr practitioner, AND panic attack sufferer, I can say great job on presenting this information 👏 👏 I hope it’s helpful for anyone who watches.

Thank you for this excellent video. I used EMDR therapy a few years ago after a car accident. It did help a lot but there was also a lot of other work that went into my recovery. Also, there was a lot of prep and explanation that my therapist did before we even got to the "meat" of the therapy with eye movement.

Passing this on to my therapist before our next EMDR session. I hope she’ll have a listen. She’d be mad if she didn’t..

Ya man but the therapist you get with low level government insurance don't really care about you and rather not deal with you so it's not really help at all it I'd just someone getting a paycheck

How does one find a list in their states of good psych that deal with anxiety/dp and possibly this?

    • @TheAnxiousTruth

The Anxiety and Depression Association of America (ADAA) is a starting point. A therapist that belongs to the ADAA is more likely to be well trained and likely specialize in treating anxiety disorders. It's not guaranteed, but its a better bet than giant generic directories like Psychology Today.

Im finding the hardest part of a few years of anxiety inc covid lickdown is still being in my head. I wont make arrangements incase i dont feel like it on the day. I kno to move on i have to make arrangements and just do it however im feeling but my head battles it every time as i dont like letting people down. I enjoyed lockdown as there was no expectation to go or do anything. My mindset is still in lockdown, wishing everything to slow down again.
