Having worked in an animal rescue for many years, to anyone also pondering the question can cats eat dog food, Cat food is made very high in protein, higher than dog food. Cats also have stronger stomachs for certain proteins. Cats can eat dog food just fine, it just might lack some nutrition and picky cats may just ignore it. A stray cat would definitely not mind dog food. Giving cat food to a dog could be a DEADLY mistake. The proteins can cause kidney and liver problems or failure. Dogs could start urinating or defecating blood. If it is one time, or an accident, cat food isn't poison to a dog or anything, but feeding them cat food for a prolonged period could potentially kill your dog given a month or so.

Note: still better than eating trash.
I will say, in regard to "tailored to dog needs," there's no FDA for dog food. you can kinda just do whatever as long as it doesn't kill dogs. that's why you can buy dog food with dye in it that can cause some dogs to squirt from either end.

Dogs are omnivores and often have plant material put into their food, whereas cats are carnivorous they do not consume plant matter on the regular unless they are missing specific enzymes. You should get cat food with high protein made with meat for cats, and for dogs you want a mix of meat and plant material as it caters more to their preferred diets respectively.
