- Over the last 10 years the Xbox brand has had a lot of changes come their way. But in that time, under Phil Spencer's leadership they have done a lot of good. Not just for Xbox, but also for the games industry. This is a look back at the last 10 years of Xbox news to see what they've accomplished. The Xbox news is often filled with a lot of negativity about Phil SPencer, about the Xbox brand, or even Xbox future plans. At the same time, when you tak a look at Xbox 10 years later after Phil Spencer took over, they've done a lot of good for the gamines industry.

I feel that he did good things for the brand but also that he never took advantage of the IP potential like gears, a game that remained stagnant and is not at the level of the trilogy, Halo Phil had 10 years to make decisions but he left people who affected the franchise in charge mcc 5 and infinite. and in 10 years it still doesn't bring game of the year type of game
That's what happens when you have to keep the business afloat when exactly could he so called capitalize on IP especially when people complained all they had was Halo Forza and Gears while releasing broken is inexcusable that's not actually solely an Xbox problem as literally everyone today will buy an unfinished project and complain instead of not buying to push things to change cyberpunk for example.
You really think Gears is going to draw in casual gamers? Xbox already has the hardcore gamers but he needs the casuals to make a real difference to Xbox the brand and I’m telling you Gears just isn’t going to do it no matter how great the game is. Dont you see that gamers tastes are changing? Ganes that once sold millions of copies are now barely selling enough to make a profit. Phil definitely sees this and that’s not to say a new gears isn’t coming but they need a commercially successful game to bring in the casuals

Not sure if you mentioned FPS boost, but that was my favorite feature. They brought to the backwards compatibility enhancements.

Just want to offer a correction. The Coalition was not purchased and was founded by Microsoft in 2010.
Black Tusk Studios
So Xbox bought the gears franchise, and bought Black Tusk, and then formed the Coalition.
Microsoft rarely founds studios they bought Halo and gears. They did develop Forza though. So out of their big 3 only 1 was house grown but they do have a lotta IP with the acquisitions so they have that going for them.
@@vincesims8839 they bought the IPs but founded the studio. The Coalition (formerly black tusk studios or Zipline Studios). Most of the these companies IPs come from purchased studios. Sonys most notable internal IPs from studios they founded are God of War and Gran Turismo.

After purchasing the Gears of War franchise they assigned it to Black Tusk who had been working on other MSFT projects at the time. They then rebranded Black Tusk Studios into the Coalition due to the IP being in their hands.
Devs don't necessarily optimize anything for the Steam Deck. It's just lowering the settings to low and hope it runs. Valve will than greenlight titles they know will run

@@dnhofer He does bring out a good point about the Series S though. I do genuinely feel it is holding the Series X back to some degree. We know how Xbox demand parity between the two consoles but I'll give a great example.
I genuinely believe path traced Minecraft never launched because they couldn't get it running on the Series S and thats dumb.
We seen it running on the Series X 4 years ago and its now disappeared. That wouldve been the only path traced game on console and its one of the most popular games in the world.
I think Microsoft need to lax the rules with the Series S, even to go as far as to allow games on the X that cant run on the S.
@@TerraWare that's just not true because there are plenty of games that run like complete dog ass on series s. Microsoft only asks they release any version for series s, doesn't matter if it's 10 fps at 600p.
This is why the S isn't holding anything back. Microsoft isn't demanding any performance metrics. If devs can't get it running well on series s just launch it how it is and no body will buy the series s version anyways.

@@southsidetherealest2860 optimisation can go beyond changing to low settings a dev can come up with new ways to compress and load assets , maybe tweak asset placement and amount , there can be features engines not initially used
A good example is no man's sky on psvr 2 at launch it was pretty much just a port of the PS4 version but they optimized and added the eye tracked foveated rendering and were able to push things alot further
Hardcore xbox fan here. Phil overpromises and under delivers. The last Great xbox game i played was Ori and the blind forest. What amazing triple aaa exclusive has phil brought us xbox fans in the last 15 yrs besides Forza. Ill wait... "If we lose are way with Halo, We lose are way with Xbox" Phil spencer.
I mean, gears, Halo, Hi fi rush, grounded, Starfield (I hear), Rise, Tomb Raider for the first year, Doom, Sunset overdrive, and there is a whole slate coming now.
The gaming media is destroying the gaming industry. Why not try and uplift each of the companies in the space. We need all help to push our hobbies no matter what our preference before the outsiders take it over

Yep never seen it as a big feature I played all those old games I always believed a new console or new hardware should bring along with it new experiences I don't buy new hardware to play old games I've already beaten to death

You may think a trillion dollars company should receive more credit from consumers but consumers deserve better than the low quality standard Xbox has been giving them for years.
XB is the only platform where i can keep playing my games with full support from updates and upgrades to controller support while other platforms like PS ask more $ to keep playing already bought games and PC has such terrible support that u can call it Broken and what's low about Gears, Halo, Forza, Minecraft, Sea of thieves etc. by my understanding those games get the same scores and sales as PC and PS games.

Not really. I took this as a over the last ten years it's not been doom and gloom. They've done a lot of good. The other one is they need to get a boot in their arse and keep their own foot out of their mouth.

Destin the problem with the series S is the amount of ram, the steam deck has 6gb more! Devs are tired of working around 8gb of ram

These studios have to work twice as much to get their games running on xbox consoles and they’re doing it for the platform with the smallest installed base. Look at how baldur’s gate 3 was delayed for xbox and they had to take out split screen co-op to even get it running.

Diablo 4 runs amazing in the Series S, and a ton of other games!
But generally, the devs that complain, release their games with PC specs that are completely insane, with show no optmization at all, or with PC specs that are inferior than the Series S, and just show they just didn't optmize for the Xbox at all...
And if people really understood about how this kind of tech really scales, they wouldn't be saying the kind of wrong info you're saying...
Xbox was on a set trajectory to die after the 2013 Mattrick reveal. Regardless of it was Phil or someone else down the line, xbox was always going to end up where it is now. That 2013 decision cascaded harder than the Patriot Act in terms of consequences

Optimising for Proton on the Steam Deck is super quick while downgrading games for the S takes times. It's about priorities.
I love the channel, Destin…but something about the rate of which you upload conflicting videos (even if by title alone) causes pretty big whiplash and some level of retroactively diminishing the impact or significance of previous videos of yours. I understand you can both criticize and praise the same thing for different reasons. But again, the rate at which you do this can give churning out content for contents sake vibes. I sorta got the same feeling when you were slamming the reaction videos every day or more.

If it wasn't for ms's billions xbox would've gone the way of the Dreamcast after the xbox one. This gen has been a case of "All the gear and no idea"

Xbox has done SO MUCH since their OG console that now is being taken for granted as a “standard” is ridiculous. From Xbox Live, To Achievements l, To Now Gamepass and Game Preservation. This is why Xbox is my fav gaming brand by far. They push gaming forward.
How will Microsoft get more Xbox one owners to buy a series s or series x? They need to start releasing more games or get more marketing deals for third party current gen games
they alreay make more games than others (look at first party games 2024, nada on playstation) and make more deals than others (gamepass deals mainly and some third partu exclusives like stalker 2 and ark 2). The main problem is marketing, many people don't know the power of gamepass. Xhen they launch a new game like hellblade2, indiana jones, gears 6, They have to put all the effort into marketing, on UA-cam, in stores, everywhere, exactly like PlayStation does which has very few games but which does much more advertising.
the problem with the xbox series is that it started the gen very badly with no first party games at launch. They absolutely must synchronize the release of their consoles with the release of big franchises. I think they know that, but covid has changed the plans somewhat.

As a lifelong Nintendo fanboy, now PC-only guy, I've started developing a soft spot for Xbox over the years.
I've found myself getting more & more annoyed when I see console wars comments, especially ones intentionally spinning things to be anti-Xbox.
Even the recent Scott the Woz video annoyed me (Gaming on a Budget) when he got to Game Pass. It's like he missed the entire point of the service and went out of his way to make it sound like a ripoff.
I have PC Game Pass, and it's the ONLY sub service I keep monthly. Even canceled Netflix after the last price hike, but I keep GP because it's just that valuable to me.
The discovery aspect & trying out new games I'd otherwise never spend money on has opened me up to so many great games. And even though he tries to make the point "it would be cheaper to buy the handful of games you want," I completely disagree.
Just 2 new games covers the entire year of PC GP, and everything else is extra. And since everything on PC is digital anyway, "owning" games I've beat has no tangible value to me. Out of my 200+ game Steam Library, 90% sits uninstalled.
I'm not going back to play these games, and theres even more games I bought that I never even played. At least with GP I'm not worried about wasting extra money on games I install & don't touch. I can't resell these digital games, so what is the benefit for someone like me to buy all these games rather than play the ones I want & not spend extra money?
Anyway, even the transparency gets them extra hate. While Xbox got attacked like crazy for being up front about the most games being cross gen for the first couple years of Series S/X, Sony lied and said "we believe in console generations for a reason," ensuring fans their prescious "exclusives" will be PS5-only.
Fast forward 3 years, and nearly all 1st party Sony games were cross gen too. My rant is too long already, so I'll stop here 😅

I agree 💯. I don’t get it, people would rather spend 70$ on the same trash remakes & remasters. Instead of paying like 15$ to play a game as long as you want then move onto the next without it feeling like you wasted money. Just like you said all I see is anti Xbox. I purchased so many games on PS5 & Stream also. My backlog is ridiculous, games I have not even play. Hell I still haven’t beat god if war ragnarok because I have been on gamepass & stream more. I feel like I am wasting 70$ now, we work too hard for our money am I right fam
Game pass was a god send for me when I didn’t have disposable income even in its first couple of years when people said it just had fodder and shovelware, I found so many hidden gems and games that are now my all time favorites that I would have never touched if it wasn’t for the service. Now that I can just buy any game I want the idea of game pass doesn’t interest me at all but it’s still an insane deal especially if you’re willing to grind microsoft reward points which basically makes it free.
I've used Steam for around 10 years and it was great but during the XB1 i went back to consoles cause the controller support for XB360 games but now besides XB games you also get PS games so who knows maybe i go back to Steam cause MS and Valve Sony seem to be friendly enough to make it even a better platform but still windows sucks.. are you using Linux or other custom O.S ? who knows maybe we can soon boot up a PC with full XB support & settings and the other way around to tweak some XB games on XB consoles cause MS seems to embrace the modding community as well with Elder scrolls and Fallout and Starfield coming so who knows maybe it's going to be a standard on XB and i luv to tweak hardware & software I'm just not luving Windows..
@@rmaxime92 same here just luving gamepass and wait on reviews and discounts for games outside gamepass with some exceptions like Zelda, Elden ring, Armored core, Dragons dogma etc. games that are actual fun and good quality and the industry can talk all they want about rising costs but they don't use the time and money to make great games so why should i pay for that ? already got Shadow of the Erdtree for 40€ cause i know it's going to be worth it and already got 70€ waiting to spend for the next Zelda cause i know it's going to be worth it.
They’ve gone from being known as Gears, Halo, Forza, to now consolidating and adding more Fallout, ESO, and Starfield (I guess). It’s just more consolidating for the sake of creativity and doubling-down on anchor titles that are just more of the same. Sony definitely does this too - but they at least put out solid titles.
Zero complaints....if I had one is that Game Pass has too many games 😅🎮🎮
This is why I commented on your other video saying that Xbox doesn't NEED to do anything but continue to be committed to their investments in Xbox (team), developers, and customers. Sony doesn't do anything in particular that the media or the community pleads for, they just stay steady fast in their commitment on their vision and quality software. Same with Apple.

My gripe against Xbox started with the Xbox One. their physical AAA games are basically proof of purchase. I'm not paying $60/$70 for a paper weight. I like to own the games I buy. If Xbox started using 100gb like PlayStation. I'll invest in the console/platform like i did in the 360 era...
Many sony games are the same thing, with some not even playable without downloading a patch. Welcome to the future.
I find it so odd that this gentleman works for ign with such an astonishing amount of Xbox fanboyism. I would think that employees would need to be somewhat impartial but based on these videos, and even more apparent on twitter (I’ll wait for the comments claiming ign is all about ps bias)
He represents the Xbox coverage for IGN, they have a guy for PlayStation, Nintendo, and PC as well. You just hear from him more especially with all the crazy news for Xbox this generation.

I love Xbox, have loved it since I first bought Halo 1. Phil has done some good things, but WHERE are the games? We have soo many first party properties that aren't getting used, and the closest we've gotten to a Sony level first party game, is a damn 6 hour Hellblade 2, which yeah some people are gonna love it, but its definitely not a 20 million sales level hit.

Phil is a boss, and I hasve been a happy customer for a while. But I dont make a console the centre of my identity so I am not as invested in the activities of acompany. But Phil has done a great job, anyone saying otherwise is not being objective.

Objectively Phil has done a horrible job. He has been in charge for 10 years. And the first new AAA game he brought to the table was Starfield. It took 10 years for one new AAA ip, thats a failure
Phil has gotten his compliments through the years. That doesn’t mean that he deserves to keep getting them specially if the criticisms are for new decisions fans disagree with.

I think maybe we would like a just good games on Xbox and that it. But maybe that is not only what they need to stay competitive. Play you games everywhere is a good thing but I don’t know why they can’t get good single player games like Sony.
After this whole Hellblade II debacle I'm convinced that people would rather prefer last generation graphics as long as they get a somewhat stable 60 on their frames. They don't care about True graphical fidelity because that may equate to lower framerates.
As long as Hellblade II has a solid 30fps I really dont care
(It's not going to be a fast paced game that demands higher frames like Halo or CoD) This is honestly the first gorgeous game that actually shows off just how powerful the Series X/S are, Not included is the Matrix demo. Shout out to the Xbox Coalition for that Beautiful demo BTW✌🏾.

I new they would fail again but its not good i still love my xbox but playstation are more in the game since ps1.
i'll give them praise if they fix the MC in fable and get rid of SBI and DEI policies. Stuff didn't work in the Movie industry, and it hasn't worked in games. Ala Forspoken, Saints row, suicide squad.
What happened was simple … not enough AAA highly acclaimed top tier really good must play games.
Don Matrick didn’t single handily decide the direction Xbox was going to take with the Xbox One. He was blamed and I’m not saying he didn’t deserve blame but Phil as well as everyone else at the head of Xbox who signed off on the One 🤔🤷♂️

They then provide Mattrick, the decision maker, advice, which he clearly ignored.
From Devs, from fans, from industry insiders, and likely from in house. Everyone knew the X1 was underpowered, they launched it extremely overpriced, they went from a game machine to a TV machine. Do you honestly think that Spencer and crew, people that go home and play games, were all, hey we need to integrate tv into everything, and motion controls that are half baked, because we want to make our already weak box even weaker?

They have done a lot to shore up their ecosystem, accessibility, and a lot of other things. At the end of the day, it's all about the games, and Xbox does not have system-sellers.
They'll get praise from me, when they finally announce gamepass family and the rumor handheld.
I'll give them praise for 3 things, backwards compatibility, free upgrade to play on next Gen console, and game pass but it's a double edged sword. There are still limitations to backwards compatibility which are the licensing and having to download it to see if it's playable. Game pass which is a good deal but not all Xbox games are on there plus they keep raising the price of the subscription.
Gamepass doesn't deserve any praise it's just an anti consumer rental service designed to take away the say of vote with your wallet , people weren't buying they games before so they found a way to make people pay for them without knowing what they truly getting
Vote with your wallet is king it's the only voice we have in this industry and that falls apart when there's a saturation of gamepass subscribers
It just means devs are working to appease Microsoft execs to get a payout not the consumer for a sale
As much as I love my Series S , playing Alan Wake 2 was a chore. Especially trying to find all the collectibles for 100% . It crashes to the dashboard at least every 30 minutes. Was definitely not powerful enough to handle the game and worries me thinking about playing newer AAA games on it.
Man, i have a high end pc and this didn't prevent problems with alan wake 2. Blame the game.

I bought a Nintendo Switch, when Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 came out, so that kinda...technically...makes me a multi-system owner 🙂? I operate it strictly as a handheld, no dock, it's not taking up extra HDMI ports 🙂.
Buying multiple NEXT GEN consoles, I've always found that ridiculous...even IF Sony has a particular third party game held hostage 😂
Just on a games level...Microsoft has the muscle to pull in 90% of third party support that would be mysteriously exclusive to "Square Enix" Playstation had they been Sega or Nintendo.
The other 10% that's exclusive to "Naughty Dog" Playstation? I can find a similar game on Series X, whereas it's not worth paying Sony's ransom. FF, there's great RPGs on Series X. Spider-man is in Ulimate Alliance 3, Midnight Suns. Less teraflops, but still 😂. God of War, Gran Turismo, Last of Us...a SIMILAR experience is somewhere across XBOX gamestop shelves, Amazon, Xbox Store or Gamepass.
But in a technical sense too...do you have your "A" console hooked up to your "A" man cave home entertainment system, and your "B" console to the "B" setup in the bedroom 🙂?
Or do you have everything hooked up to the "A" set up? You got controllers and peripherals on top of each other?
I don't need two blu rays, two big screens, two PCs, two phones, two tablets...I only NEED ONE 🙂. Maybe you see it differently...
Lastly...where did you find TIME, for every "must have" game, on EVERY system 😂?! Got a JOB 😂?! Other hobbies, like movies?! Streaming?! I barely got time for the one system I DO have 😂! On vacation for the next ten days, more time now! Usually its one session a day on weekdays, and longer sessions on weekends.
I only got time for Switch, as a "second system" because it comes WITH me 😂! Gamepass comes with me too, but connection issues with my tablet.

@@TheBean87vgchartz which pretty much mirrors ampere estimates had series. Consoles at 28 mil at end of Dec 2023. Not sure where 34 mil comes from but they certainly didn't sell 6 million in 4 months post holidays. (In 2023 they sold 7.6 over the entire year).
They are not trying to outsell the PlayStation or Nintendo systems the plan is to have gamepass on every system essentially winning everything. Consoles won’t be a big thing in the future as the gap closes of technology differences.

Winning everything lmao. Putting gp on everything means sony and nintendo have to allow it on their platforms. It's already on everything else, pc (pc gamers use steam), mobile (mobile gamers use apple arcade/Google playstore), it's on samsung tvs.
Ms can make a lot of revenue as a third party publisher, they'll put their games everywhere like most big publishers. Essentially they'll be partners with sony/nintendo like EA or ubisoft.

He defintely has not failed but the issue with first party games is annoying, there has not really been anything released by their many studios that is truly amazing, they really have to improve this a lot. Gamepass has been great, the hardware is excellent for the most part and backwards games is great, but like i said the first party games really has to improve.

If you play on steam deck you have to buy the game. A lot of xbox players will avoid buying it and wait for it to go to gamepass. Idk for sure, but maybe that has something to do with it
The only thing they achieved is bringing the worst kind of people into the video game industry and turning it into a soulless subscription service.
A. Back compatibility is great but playing old games aren't saving the brand. Higher textures were already in the source code and scaled down for optimization. Xbox had a whole conversation about having a program that can port an x360 game to x86 in like 15 minutes.
B. .gears 4 and 4 was nurtured in the violence department, blood is cartoonish and fighting robots that dont bleed, tell you everything you need to know. Gears 5 was just as bad. Also, the coalition helping with other games being developed is no different than delegating more employees to an important work task. Its common place in any company.
C. Xbox one had a super fast ram cache chip that held 1MB of data. It couldn't hold 1 frame of 1080p data. Every developer hated it and compared it to PS3 spe's cores which resulted in worse performance overall. Which is why even after freeing up resources gutting the kinect OS layer...it still ran at 900p.
D. Xbox blows.

The draw calls on the xbox API are just inefficient, completely negating the 20 percent advantage in hardwaret power over its market competition. Digital foundry consistantly backs this up. Even the most recent xbox ports run 20 percent better on PS5. Considering that extra grunt is used as a marketing tool to sell xboxes....I think it's worth mentioning. No one on UA-cam presents facts to the consumer as a whole.
Microsoft was convicted of violating consumers (and minors) privacy by recording conversation in homes with the kinect hardware. Convicted and fined. I'm not advocating not to buy an xbox. I'm advocating to be informed before making a purchase.
Added: the past very much influences the way people think and how business is ran today. There is absolutely no scenario (besides death) wherein past actions are irrelevant. Except xbox owners apparently

I hate RPGS...RTS and TBS are a faster paced, more exciting and gratifying offshoot of that, and are my top genre, go figure 😂. But Clockwork Revolution looks more like a FPS with RPG elements. If it doesn't have that...slow methodical pace...of most RPGs, I may pick that up, gotta see the reviews.

The series s argument is whether or not MS will pay to put the game on gamepass. If not then the sales will be worse than the steam deck focused pc sales. As much as I like gamepass MS has set the standard on xbox to not buy games on the platform for normie gamers.

As someone that owns both a Series S and X, Xbox is a joke and a laughing stock in the gaming industry. The lack of good consistent exclusives is the biggest thing, always has been since the 360 ended. Hellblade 2 running at 30fps on Series X is laughable. Now everyone is asking if Gears 6 and every other first party game will be 30fps. Gears and Halo ain't been good in a long long time and people are bored of Forza which the last Motorsport one sucked.
They've tried to innovate over and over (too early in people's eyes) and got bashed for it quite a bit..

People use their smart tvs now, nobody is buying a console to stream. They buy the console to play games, if it happens to have streaming apps they might use it if it's more convenient than using their smart tv.

Yeah Phil and Xbox should get props on one hand BUT failing to capitalize on Xbox 360 I think hurt them and to be clear that was not Phil’s fault. The only reason Xbox fell off in my opinion is because after Peter Moore left MS failed to keep the same internal ecosystem between their first party Devs and the company. Destin shared a link to a woman who worked as a dev for Xbox and she clearly stated that after Peter Moore left his open door policy for devs to come and discuss issues was closed and that the morale internally died and that’s why Phil was put in place as CEO, which was to repair that situation. We can argue how effective Phil was at doing that but he did a way better job than his predecessor but again this is why Xbox is in the confusing position they are in now. Keep this in mind had Phil not been hired as CEO I don’t think xbox would be around at all this gen.
All truth, Don basically took the brand from its tower and blew out the stabilizers. Phil’s been rebuilding since and brought Xbox from the grave to Ms 3rd biggest revenue generators. He even got Ms to fully back Xbox, which was never the case before.

Peter Moore and Don Matrick did better at getting good games on xbox.
Most of the exclusives under Spencer were disappointing and released either broken or barebones.
Xbox would have never gone multiplatform if they were still competitive with playstation.

Not really a one-to-one comparison. You have to keep in mind that during each respected time the cost and time to developed were dramatically different.
Peter Moore had the benefit of an aggressive Microsoft with funding to have content. At the same time it was shortsighted. The exclusives wasn’t their IP’s. So yeah the Xbox360 was a great generation. It also shaped what was going to happen in the Xbox One era. Microsoft at the time should have bought BioWare & Gearbox.
Don Mattrick took the Xbox360 goodwill & flushed it in the toilet.
Phil Spencer has been battling inconsistent SUPPORT until NOW. You can’t make games without money. Previous Microsoft management wanted to Kill Xbox.
