Few notes that are pretty obvious but -At Her death, you see many reporters clamoring to get photos of her body, but at her funeral, all the seats are empty with unopened invitations on them. -Next we see Hwasa being torn apart and consumed by the people at the table. (represented by her organs, fashion, CDs, and jewelry) notice how they are disgusted by the parts of her. -Then you have Hwasa in a milky white pool, probably representing beauty and purity. -At the dinner table, the same people who consumed her, now have their faces covered, and on their plates are pieces of keyboards, alluding to anonymous hate online -You see Hwasa in a straight jacket hooked up to monitors, obviously her physical and mental health deteriorating as dozens of pencils point at her as she breaks down -She finally dawn a crown a nails (final nail in the coffin perhaps?) before taking scissors to her wrist, turning the pure white pool a deep red. "Maria Maria These are words for you It’s a shining night Don’t bother me Oh Maria they’re words for you Why are you struggling You’re already beautiful..." It ends with Hwasa in deep thought before her members arrive with presents and smiles. Maria=Hwasa, she is singing to herself.
Great analysis but I'd like to add more to what u said. I'm normally not very good at understanding MV references and meanings but I know for sure that the cigarette MV scene is from the classic Italian movie Malèna which is about how society judges a woman just because she was "too sensual" and different in her time. In that scene she gives herself a makeover so she cuts and dies her hair from dark brown to red just like Hwasa in the MV to I guess "fit in"/ own the shit ppl say about her and make herself available to men and as soon as she pulls out the cigarette the men around her start to offer her help while the women around her where jealous of her beauty and how bold she was for doing what she did calling her disgusting. Here is the movie clip for those of u who wanna see the OG scene: ua-cam.com/video/zkBkTx-GL8s/v-deo.html. There were a lot biblical references too like the crown with the nails. And in the end u see her friends come over to help her through the hard times dealing with societies negativity like the way ppl reacted when she died. They only cared about her when she died and where not decent enough to respect her and took pictures of her dead body and yet nobody showed up to her funeral (notice how the chairs are turned the other way around) , I think the first MV scene shows u what would have happened if she didn't have the support of her band members and if she wasn't strong enough and let the floating pencils which I think represent the press and the articles written about her aka ppls BS get to her. And obviously if u look up the lyrics u will understand it better, they are very touchy and powerfully relatable to many females out there including myself. This is definitely a sad and personal song for Hwasa with upbeat instrumentals.
Wow,, thank you for this. I would have gotten that but after a ton of thought but you just sped it up for me. Yeah with the red and black hair i thought it was two sides of the same coin kinda thing too
MrBody Massage Machine hi! The milky white pool actually represents the korean societies obsession over white and creamy skin. It is believed that bathing in “milk” helps your skin become whiter. I’m assuming that Hwasa’s scene of bathing in milk shows how she feels pressured to have whiter skin rather than her beautiful naturally tanned skin. 😊
I've commented on this before lmao, but the inked hands when she picks up the crown also symbolises how she was stained by the pencils, hate, thrown at her.
We can't forget the Malena reference in the beginning, when she hugs the persona they gave her and seduce everyone by just being herself, and all the men come running to light her cigarette not because they recognize her, but for her attention
honestly the only Female Idol that I cant wait for her to drop MV she's always amazing and brings different genre in music her backup dancers shine with her and I started following the guy with the tattoo in IG lol he got a lot of followers after the MV from 4k to 35K in just 2 days and I think it keeps increasing
The thing with Mamamoo is that they remind me of Little Mix. No one stands out. All of them shine and all of them are as equally as talented. We stan queens. Stan Little Mix and Mamamoo
Hwasa said Maria is the crystallized tears and sweat that she shed. The MV starts with a crime scene, Hwasa is dead and people are still trying to take some shots of her. A red hair Maria (an alter ego after Hwasa baptismal name) is watching the scene careless. Hwasa funeral, only empty chairs with invitation on it and with its back turned, nobody cares like she says in the lyrics. Here an homage to the most beautiful and powerful scene in Malena movie, with all those men offering their lighter to her. Malena is the most beautiful woman of a SMALL village (it can be a comparison to South Korea restricted mentality), because of her looks and her solitary state, she is an object of lust for all the town's men and of hatred for its women…after many vicissitudes and a very hard time she understood that her beauty is her salvation. So she cuts her black hair and dyes by red her hair, changing her attitude as well. We can clearly see a difference among Hwasa and Maria, both in outfits and attitude. In the table scene we can see a bloodstained Maria with rubber boots and a pretty simple outfit at a table with people all dressed up, they're keyboard warriors. Again lyrics "You all worked hard hating. If you knock me down. Does that feed you?" She's serving them with all sort of things. The table is full with jewels, trove of tapes, mics, cds, diamonds…but they're just looking at those picky. Maria with a bored face is watching them and then she starts happily eating a brain. The difference among Maria and those people is so strong and impactful. I've also read that eat someone's brain means pester someone. The triangular tub is also interesting, she's bathing in milk and rose petals like a Queen and her skin is so white, but once again she looks bored and then she starts to make 'no' gesture with her finger with a smirking face. Like 'I don't need to be pale, I'm beautiful like this'… probably a references to all hateful comments she gets about her bronze skin since ages. We're back to Hwasa, she's trapped like in a mental hospital with a straitjacket, all her body is constrained by laces…this once again can be interpreted as the restricted South Korea mentality. They're monitoring her, pencils (comments) are pointed at her and she is trying to escape from this kind of net (network) until she finds a crown with diamonds and nails (representing the double faces of success). Ink-stained hands Hwasa decides to wear the crown, She got ink on her hands while fighting malicious comments, in fact we can see her beating her fists on the ground and shouting. The triangular tub is back but this time we can see Maria and Hwasa looking at each other through a bloody water. A triangle is a figure linked to different trinities like mind, body & spirit; past, present & future; thought, feeling & emotion and creation, preservation and destruction. And, personally, all those fit this MV perfectly. And now we discover Hwasa was not dead at all. Like it was all a dream, in fact she's on a coach with scissor in her hands, she is alone with her thoughts when suddenly Mamamoo members appear with big smiles. She said many times Mamamoo are her strength and she was able to face difficulties since trainee period only because they were together. The whole lyrics are beautiful and powerful but sad at the same time. She said this is an exciting yet sad song, she likes those kind of songs because they resemble life. With this album Hwasa became the first Korean female solo artist to reach #1 on iTunes US. She co-wrote and co-composed 4 songs out of 6 of this album…an amazing album with powerful collaborations, a Queen like always.
After first being introduced to Kpop through BTS, I'm now making a real, unbiased effort to expand my horizons. To be honest, the girl groups and most female soloists just aren't my thing but Mamamoo and specifically Hwasa are the exception. Always original, always interesting, always taking risks and challenging norms and I'm here for it.
Same. I do enjoy songs from other idols/groups, but just never got around to really getting to know and stanning them (other than BTS, Mamamoo, SISTAR and EXID, I guess)
Mamamoo are awesome solo and as a group. I haven't seen individual charisma and group performance fit a group so perfectly since BigBang. I love mamamoo they blow me away everytime
The thing I loved about this song was the clear influence in Latin beats, she incorporated them so well! What made me laugh was David reacting to the "la-li-le-lu-lai" part in the beginning, so genuine ahah it's actually something commonly found in older Puerto Rican songs (fact of the day I guess)
I have been watching all her pre-interviews, behind the scenes teasers etc and Hwasa definitely has put her soul into this album. She's been involved in every part of this from lyrics, composition, even planned the whole story-line of the music video which creates a deeper impact. Even in her interviews she's been saying that she's mentally and physically tired and that she even cried to the lines in Maria despite how upbeat it sounds. The whole song is a consolation to herself (her Christian name being Maria, which is even tattooed on her neck) - her favourite line is "Maria these words are for you, Why are you struggling - you are already beautiful" It kinda shows no matter how tough and confident she seems - she is still sensitive and greatly affected by all the hate she receives. I hope you guys can check out more of the songs on her album if you get time - there are literally no skips. Even with little promotion, I'm glad her album has achieved so much. Its pretty stable #3 on the Korean charts, she was the also the first Korean female soloist to hit No.1 on the US itunes Album chart. Also keep an eye out - there will be another MV for her b-side LMM
Maria is doing extremely well on the charts it's on the TOP 5 of all the charts, and her solo album (which she wrote and composed most of herself) got number 1 worldwide and became the first solo album by a female korean artist to hit number 1 on US itunes . As for the theory: The song is about people trying to tear her down, to destroy her self esteem, literally feeding off watching her suffer. The mv had a lot of little symbolic details in correlation to this: the people eating mics and cds and fashion items (literally consuming her), the people with their faces covered (anonymous) having keyboards in their plates (keyboard warriors), the pencils directed at her in a very hostile manner, Everyone gathering at her crime scene taking pictures and enjoying "the spectacle" but no one actually showing up at her funeral, her in the mental institution (signaling that her mental state is getting exhausted) And there is the whole part of her murdering her old self and a new Hwasa being born (Hwasa with black hair is her old self and Hwasa with the red hair is the new Maria) The story of the mv is also heavily influenced by the movie Maléna, which Hwasa is a big fan of.
I think she's singing about how being in the K-pop industry has taken a significant toll on her mental health: - It starts with her "funeral" and all these people are eating away at her, quite literally, reducing her to parts that they rip away and devour. It's quite dehumanising; like the way online commenters nitpick at an idol's appearance and attitude and ability and a hundred other things. - The fact that this is a crime scene aesthetic probably tells us that she feels this should taken more seriously as an issue. That cyber-bullying and killing somebody slowly by spreading hate is no better than picking up a knife and stabbing them to death. The MV also begins with the lighter scene where several disembodied hands offer to light up her cigarette, which reflects how society only feeds into her own negativities and misgivings. It enables her insecurities instead of pulling her out of that toxic thinking. - The white spaces remind me of both a medical facility and a mortuary. She's sitting on that chair with the heart monitors literally showing a heart spike up - her need for validation, affection, wherever you wanna call it - and how it's landed her in a straitjacket, because caring too much about what other people think will set you on a doomed journey of playing eternal catch-up. You can never please everyone. - Near the end of the song, especially after the Latin American bridge, her movements and the music itself seem a bit more triumphant to me. Like she's given up on caring what random people think, because the only person you need to be impressing is yourself. The camo jacket is a particularly nice touch - gives her the look of a bulletproof fighter, while the nude-coloured outfit from before served to represent vulnerability and baring oneself wholly to the public eye. - The girls showing up at the end, I heard someone say was supposed to be an alternate timeline thing. Like, with their friendship and support, Maria survived in another universe? Anyway, these are just my theories. I'm sure I read too much into some stuff and not enough into other stuff lol. Does anyone have any thoughts on what the milk bath (I presume that's what it is) signifies? Overall: what a fantastic song! I've been humming it all week, plus the concept is so fresh and mature. And Hwasa's confidence burns so brightly throughout the video. I've never been prouder to stan these women.
It is an incredible song, Hwasa gave us the best minutes, everything María was incredible and the final part confirmed that MAMAMOO are a family, thanks for your reaction. Hwasa killed me she is a goddess
David you should definitely make an explained video but about the song, the lyrics. It has such a deep meaning that I can't understand that many Korean reactors didn't give any attention. Most of them were so superficial like only about the looks, dance and performance. While those are important too and of course they were absolutely outstanding because, Hwasa=Queen , the song was so much more than that. Specially knowing how celebrities or any person really, can be affected by hate, bully and insensitive criticism taking them to extreme measurements. So yeah, I wish people get the message Hwasa wants to give and not only focus on her sexiness and charisma. She gave a lot more than that in this song.
Mamamoo as a group and every single member are real monsters. Personification of talent. Each one of them. People just seems not prepare for what the girls are.
I think what the penciles mean that ppl only see one side of her, and everything ppl say they don't think how does that impact on her,and now she killed like her shadow or the part of her that get effeacted of what ppl say part on her. This is just what i think 🌚
I think the part where you say the dance with body rolls its familiar because of iKON's Rhythm TA if I'm not mistaken. They have a similar dance part where they do the body rolls and end up in a diagonal line too. It looks fire either way!!!
I waited for this react video like everyday since the song has been out and David never dissapoints, The man knows who the queen is and there isn't anything more wholesome than his reaction to this masterpiece of a video. And yes you know it's a genuine reaction when he really doesn't have mucht to say cuz he's that focused.
Probably the best explanation of the meaning of the song and MV "Maria" - ua-cam.com/video/i2UcKWyP7PE/v-deo.html Of course, apart from her faith (Hwasa is a Catholic and Maria is her name, taken at baptism). I think that's why Maria is her escape, shelter and liberation.
At first I had a hard time liking this song because of that part with the drastic change. It didn't feel like it fit. Now I like the song after a few listens because the other part is so addictive
KARD did that familiar move in Red Moon. Also pretty sure the back drop against the girls while kneeling and the following body rolls were from Ariana Grande's performance of God is a Woman.
This is kinda disappointing that David couldn't decode the implications and messages from this video, even he could listen to the Korean lyrics!! This song was written by Hwasa, and actually the consolidation of her sweat and tears, her glory and pain. Very detailed MV scene analysis please see here. ua-cam.com/video/i2UcKWyP7PE/v-deo.html
I like his videos but he doesn't usually go into-depth with his reaction videos. Mostly reacts to the background music and dance and stuff like that. Thank you for the link. I saw the video and it blew my mind. I was missing so many pieces of what she is trying to convey. It's a very moving MV. I also subscribed to the creator of the MV. They did a great job.
I just feel like many of us have wasted the effort Hwasa put in this video while they only concern about the sexiness of her dance only. Who really cares about her tears??
@@fbacpl I find it annoying that they won't allow the fans to translate into English the lyrics. I know there were fans who have provided translations but they can't add them. Allowing ppl to view the translation on the MV wld go a loooong way. Nothing wrong with seeing her as sexy (she is HOT and BEAUTIFUL) but she has many messages in the MV and I wish more ppl cld see it. I didn't catch like 80% of her message until I saw the video you sent. Now I want to see that movie Hwasa references.
Please react to LMM , it is one of the most raw and beautiful songs, and it honestly in some ways is a greater masterpiece than what she achieved with Maria
stop saying that she broke all the beauty standards. koreans were not just looking for thin body. the reason why she's shining and koreans like her is because she is confident with herself, not just for "BREAKING BEAUTY STANDARDS". saying that she broke beauty standards sounds like korean music industry only wants thin body (actually there were A LOT of singers who broke """""BEAUTY STANDARDS""""" before hwasa). that really does sounds like some kind of orientalism.

Yaass hwa sa is a queenn
Am I the only one noticed the mots albums behind Devid??
And I am DEFFENATELY NOT jealous.
It is an incredible song, Hwasa gave us the best minutes, everything María was incredible and the final part confirmed that MAMAMOO are a family, thanks for your reaction.
Hwasa killed me she is a goddess
So, Hwasa has 5 wins with “Maria”, what a Queen, my gosh!!!
Her album is amazing, I haven’t expected
Latinoamérica presente! 🔥🔥
She is so beautiful in and out.
I need a DKDKTV 'explained' of Hwasa's MV ASAP
Mamamoo as a group and every single member are real monsters. Personification of talent. Each one of them. People just seems not prepare for what the girls are.
Queen Hwasa strikes again! Her and Sunmi's presence and charisma are off the charts.
I think what the penciles mean that ppl only see one side of her, and everything ppl say they don't think how does that impact on her,and now she killed like her shadow or the part of her that get effeacted of what ppl say part on her.
This is just what i think 🌚
Finally!! The reaction I've been waiting for.
Hwasa : *body rolling
David and PD : *mentions jre
I got goosebumps when I listen that song. One of the best female kpop idol
i like mamamoo, i hope they shine brighter bcos thats real talent right there.
Hwasa Maria won 1st on inkigayo
Queen hwasa
Amo la canción, Hwasa y Mamamoo son mujeres muy versátiles.
QUEEN. That is all
Such a voice and such a charisma! Queen Hwasa!
Hwasa is so gorgeous. Love her so much!
The choreo for the 2nd chorus that you said looks familiar is similar to the Come Back Home (2NE1) choreo. But it’s also just a body roll too lol
Hwasa
I think the part where you say the dance with body rolls its familiar because of iKON's Rhythm TA if I'm not mistaken. They have a similar dance part where they do the body rolls and end up in a diagonal line too. It looks fire either way!!!
FINALLY HWASA! LOVE HER ALBUM
I waited for this react video like everyday since the song has been out and David never dissapoints,
The man knows who the queen is and there isn't anything more wholesome than his reaction to this masterpiece of a video.
And yes you know it's a genuine reaction when he really doesn't have mucht to say cuz he's that focused.
Probably the best explanation of the meaning of the song and MV "Maria" - ua-cam.com/video/i2UcKWyP7PE/v-deo.html
Of course, apart from her faith (Hwasa is a Catholic and Maria is her name, taken at baptism). I think that's why Maria is her escape, shelter and liberation.
Can't agree more and feel sad to lots of reactions who failed to appreciate Hwasa's efforts and tears.
I was really hoping for a mv explained for this video 🙈
Ahhh OMG I was waiting for this and finally it’s here😩☺️
You should check out the whole album it’s 🔥 🔥 🔥
At first I had a hard time liking this song because of that part with the drastic change. It didn't feel like it fit. Now I like the song after a few listens because the other part is so addictive
i really like her
My hwasa queen of korea........ here beauty is unique.true pretty with make up .no make up still beautiful...
I also love that this album over all has great sidetracks.
I KEEP LISTENING TO THIS SONG SINCE ITS RELEASE. SHE’S A QUEEN!!!!!
Muy bien con el sonido Latino.
this song is so beautiful. like, its so gorgeous and i cant stop listening to it
KARD did that familiar move in Red Moon. Also pretty sure the back drop against the girls while kneeling and the following body rolls were from Ariana Grande's performance of God is a Woman.
I asked for it and I got it. Yaaaaaas 😊😊
This is my jam. 🙌🏻
The body roll at 3:11 feels familiar to me as well. For me, the body roll execution is similar to a dance step in EXO's The Eve.
Was waiting for your reaction to this bop since its release
Now I want to see that movie Hwasa references.
that familiar dance reminds of come back home choreo lol
She keeps giving me chills! Aaa
the familiar dance part is similar to 2ne1's come back home dance!
apparently it's sampled from a song from a bollywood movie
She is such a queen
i was waiting for thissssssssssss
I like the 7 in the back ground😳🤣, Beauty is in the beholder ,She does have a good sounding voice
Please react to LMM , it is one of the most raw and beautiful songs, and it honestly in some ways is a greater masterpiece than what she achieved with Maria
She is fabulous. You need to listen to her whole album. Haswa Is a queen.
Hwasa and Sunmi never disappoint me 👑👑🤍 pporappippam might be my favorite release from this year 🔝
stop saying that she broke all the beauty standards. koreans were not just looking for thin body. the reason why she's shining and koreans like her is because she is confident with herself, not just for "BREAKING BEAUTY STANDARDS". saying that she broke beauty standards sounds like korean music industry only wants thin body (actually there were A LOT of singers who broke """""BEAUTY STANDARDS""""" before hwasa). that really does sounds like some kind of orientalism.
OOooOooOoOooOoOOo I loved that song, it's just soo cool❤️❤️
I am actually excited to see that u think about this video🤭
The scene with the lighters is from the Italian film Maléna it’s very sad but good I suggest you check it out
I was waiting for your reaction because your review is so good...
She is one of a kind...
Lots of love from India...❤
Hwasa for me is so beautiful. ❤
YASSS BEEN WAITING FOR THISSS!!!!
i look up to her so much
Ive been waiting for ur reaction since her comeback ♥️🙏
This song always make me cry
I could be wrong but I see a lot of possible inspiration from the Italian movie Malena in some of the scenes and visuals of the mv
I can't believe you're watching it for first time 😔
Any way thankful for reaction 💟
Plz do an explained video for Maria by Hwasa!!
I really hope Hwasa gets even bigger in the next few years. If the Korean market can't appreciate her enough, believe me, the western market will.
David, please do a María explained by a Korean plssss
I've never been this fast miss n luuuuuuuuuuuv u David so much truuuully ;God bless u ❤❤❤🙏🏻👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻👍🏻💜💜💜❤❤💜💜💜❤❤💜❤❤❤❤❤👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻💖💖❤❤💜❤❤💜👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻❤❤❤💜💜💜💜💜❤❤❤❤❤💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
Legit reaction
I'm kinda surprised you didn't immediatly get the meaning of cause the lyrics are petty obvious when you understand Korean, but yeah she is really did amazing on every part of this album
We appreciate if you will do an explanation David. Im actually fan of yours.
The reaction I have been waiting for😍
The body role and shoutout to JRE?? Lol.. He reallyyyyyy love the body role part 🤣
I love ur reactions David ❤️❤️
I would loove to watch your explanation of this mv, pleaseee
I can't wait for ur explanation for this mv *_*
3:11 it’s kinda similar w/ childish gambino’s lil dance move in “this is america” at least that’s where i remember it from:>
Great vídeo!!
I was waiting for this🔥🔥🔥🙂
Great analysis but I'd like to add more to what u said.
Feel free to add more to what I comment and correct me if I miss interpreted something :)
You missed Sunmi's Pporappipam....plz do react to it💜💜💜💜
When you already watched and you acting like it is new to you to make cool reaction video
