Just imagine if someone was wanting to form a Level 42 tribute band and they had to try and learn Mark's licks and he's playing his bass SO fast that it's all just a complete blur? I think most of them would just give up on the idea altogether. What an amazing musician he is.

King is best known for his hammering but man I think I even enjoyed the first 2 minutes even more.

    tutown.
Not really - the lighter gauge enables him to play faster, plus he prefered using those combined with 4x10 speakers for a more punchy than usual bass tone.
It works quite well I think.

@illicitutown I remember him saying that once he went to a heavier string set, and he didnt llike it because in stead of getting and snap he got a bip....so he went back..he prefered the high pitched twang of the lighter ones...

Mark used to do the rhythm (with feet's) all the time when playing the solo, that's maybe the reason for 'walking in place' .... B-)

@1969fenderjazz OK I thought you were trying the same as mars as you referred to him...have you tried adjusting the truss rod...the JD's should be able to handle any string gauge,...

There is only one Mark King, there is only one Jaco, there is only one Stanley Clarke.

Is this concert available on Dvd somewhere ?

Yeah, no one that I'm aware of was using the left hand-muting and ghost notes at that level before Mark. I think Stanley did some ghost notes with the left hand but Mark took it to a whole other level. I just used "level" two times and it wasn't on purpose. Ha!

@Inzo42 Louis Johnson did - but Mark King brought to the forefront of the stage. No one ever did that before, except Larry Graham but that was many years before

Even though i own 2 Status Bass Guitar's which are the 2015 Status Series II & the 2001 Status KingBass Artist Bass Guitar's I still prefer the sound of the JD Supernatural Series over the various Status Bass Guitar's Mark uses...
I dont know if its the settings & amps Mark's using along with his Status but my 2 Status Bass Guitar's sound a hell of a lot better when i set mine up than what Mark's sound is when hes playing Live with his Status Bass Guitar's...
Yes the Status & JD Supernatural Series Bass Guitar's do sound different & for year's i thought it was the Status Bass Guitar's that were causing his sound to not be as good but that was until i tried one & though they have the sound thats similar to a JD its never going to be exactly like a JD Bass but it still begs the question why when Mark plays the Status range of bass guitar's that he uses when touring then why dont they sound as good as they should & this not even comparing the Status range of basd guitars to the JD Supernatural Series line of bass guitar's ...
There's no doubt that Mark & all of the previous members of Level 42 can seriously play to a high standard but i'd love to get on the stage & hear what Mark's sound is like via his onstage amp as anyone who has been in a professional or up & coming band will tell you that the fans don't hear that stage amps but instead they hear those amps mixed through a PA & a a good mixer can make or break your overall sound as the sound is coming from the speakers in front of the band & this is what the fans hear...
One final note, how they still have the energy to still be on tour time after time for 4 plus decades is a testament to how much they love playing their music, especially Live & i hope the 40th Anniversay Tour that was due to kick off last year but was cancelled back in October 2020 gets the go ahead this October but the way things are at the moment with this Covid-19 i wouldnt bet on it definitely happening!..
Too many that criticise & don't know or follow Mark's overall playing think that he is a one trick pony & just plays slap all the time & that is not true & his finger style & bass line using his fingers are amazing also but i guess thats the price Mark pays for playing like a drummer on the bass guitar but that doesn't & shouldn't detract from his whole back catalogue of bass lines & the fact he does these while singing & on top of that he is naturally left handed is even more amazing when you add this into his abilities as a singer along with playing bass/percussion/drums & acoustic guitar just to name a few of the instruments he plays is no easy feat...
In light of this still ongoing coronavirus outbreak stay safe and healthy wherever you are in this world...
    RIP Alan Murphy
    RIP Boon Gould
