  • Have you ever wondered why Indian women still proudly wear sarees, while Indian men rarely wear dhotis? Here’s how Indian menswear evolved: a story of power and identity.
In the 17th century, elite Indian men adopted Western clothing as a status symbol, leaving traditional garments like dhotis and pyjamas behind. The British influence transformed Indian menswear, with trousers, suits, and shoes becoming the norm.
As Indian men aligned themselves with Western styles, dhotis became associated with the poor and uneducated. Today, traditional clothes are mostly worn during religious occasions or weddings.
But who’s at fault? Is it the men of today’s generation or a legacy of colonialism and cultural influence?
Share your thoughts! Let’s spark a conversation about identity, tradition, and cultural heritage.

For MEN as well. The burden of culture was conveniently put on women. It is moralised and made into a matter of character assassination if women are too 'modernised' or 'westernised' in movies and in homes. Patriarchy 🙄

It's a fault of the fashion designers and the government of India.
Fashion designers never formally categorised the traditional Sanatani clothing and jewellery in formal, business, casual, semi-casual, etc, and the government didn't enforce it by allowing/enforcing it.
Mr. Bose, you are a fashion designer. Can you come up with the classifications I have mentioned? I like wearing dhoti, BTW.
You are only setting the trend. Which can fade with time. But if you formally categorise the traditional Sanatani clothing, then eventually, the government will issue the SOP for the traditional formals. Then your legacy of classification will live on.

Actually we men are not that free to even think about why I don't wear dhoti? It's just that we wear what others are wearing because it's least of a concern for us

      Start thinking.
You are what is called crowd mentality 🙂
As for not being free, trust me, a working, married woman has more work than you perhaps. 😂
Btw, it is being part of a privileged class/caste/gender to not have to think all of this.
The thinkers usually come from the marginalised/discriminated class, when they wake up, start 'seeing' and start questioning things around them. 🙂
