Excellent perspective on this film's essence. A film of powerful images, eternal cinematography, and extremely impactful. The movie focuses on an eternal message: the human struggle to realize God's Greatness, to accept his Grace, and to maintain a relationship with Good in an ever pressing World fixated on Power and Control, an Evil that simmers underneath it all, constantly endeavouring to steal us from our Creator. Terrence Malick directed this Tour Du Force, creating a stunning achievement; this film is a Masterpiece. What's frustrating is the almost total absence of recognition in the film community; the lack of access for the viewing public to see the beauty of this film projected onto a larger screen and hear the telling of this powerful story, en masse. How could Oscar not say one thing about this film? Is it because it is a story of faith? Probably. After all, the Oscars are gold plated statues of lead, and nothing more; a celebration of the golden Calf, where deep thought and careful reflection have little importance in Tinseltown. So, accepting this movie has no place amongst secular corporate elites, let's appreciate this movie for what it is - a Work of Art; a portrait as grand as any Rembrandt painting; a story as powerful as any Dicken's Novel. A Hidden Life tugs at our emotions and elevates our senses. Bravo Terrence Malick, for challenging all of us who watch this film, through the life and example of it's main character, Franz Jagerstatter, a modest farmer who tilled the land and loved his family and God. Thank you for asking us to take a profound journey with you and requesting that we take a closer look at the great choice we all have to make in life - choosing to follow the pathway toward God's light, accepting the true meaning of life which is often hidden by society's demands, or choosing the pathway that embraces death, that demonic lure that rapidly descends into darkness. Making the choice between God and Darkness comes out of two contrasting world's, one that is full of rolling hills, fields of wheat, endless skies, trees that reach for God's hand, quiet and calming breezes, smiling faces, light cascading from a warm sun, versus a second world of steel, walls, cells, structures that attempt to block and conceal the sun, and men who lust for power, bent on destroying the very nature that has created them, destroying all things through violence, isolation, and War. In essence, Malick is examining two worlds: the world of the Nazis and the World of love and beauty. He reminds his viewers that the Nazis have rejected the search for meaning in life; they have lost sight of Nature and given up on God's grace, all the while working feverously to destroy love, punish the innocent with brutality and murder, all as a means to control their world, usurping God's role in the Universe, but forever falling short. His message at the end is overwhelming - Grace prevails, Light cannot be blocked by walls, or brutes, and GOD's Will prevails until eternity. It is the triumph of life, light, and love. This movie should not be missed - A MUST SEE film. Deep thought and reflection should follow. You have done justice to this film with your excellent review of A Hidden Life. Thank you. Your review is also a strong and worthy compliment to Director Malick. This truly is one of the Great films! A Hidden Gem!

Hi, I have a weird question to you. I would like to see it in cinema in Japan, could you tell me if I can do it without subtitles? I don't know German at all.

Hi Ina O, for the most part, the film is in English, there are some sentences in German. If you are proficient in English and know basic concepts of Christianity you’ll be just fine understanding the film.

Just saw this film. I thought this was a more focused Malick and his best film since The Tree of Life. I think Malick's best works are when he does period dramas. My only criticism of the film is the running time. For what Malick was trying to say, it didn't need to be 3hrs. Other than that this was a great film. Really enjoyed your video essay. Keep up the good work.

@@deborahanne9793 I rented the film on Amazon. Rent the HD version if you can, but if you haven't seen a Terrence Malik film before, I'd start of with "Days of Heaven."

“But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things - and the things that are not - to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before him […] Yet among the mature we do impart wisdom, although it is not a wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are doomed to pass away. But we impart a secret and hidden wisdom of God, which God decreed before the ages for our glory.” - 1 Corinthians 1:26-29; 2:6-7
