I find it really weird and messed up that this subculture that l got bullied in my small town for being into has become so damn comodified and monetized. The idea of dropping thousands of dollars to see bands on a CRUISE that I saw in high school for 20 bucks is insane.
*nostalgia* lol
this is what happened with anime too, just look at the next thing kids are making fun of eachother for and capitalize on it 💰
Go on the cruise. Bully everyone there. After all, you earner, you listened to them when they were under ground.

I wonder, in 20 years will there be hyperpop/digicore mega shows full of non binary 35 year olds
Are either of those back? Haven't seen a Hot Topic in ages and Warped has only had a few shows since closing the tour that I know of.

Recapturing youth is not the main reason people love the music and culture. It was just so mainstream for a while, then faded into practical obscurity. The people who still love it are the ones who loved it all along. Listening to music from ones youth is not denial of aging, it's really that people tend to love the same music for life.
I’ve met people in their 40’s and 50’s that still listen to music from when they were younger.
@@larasaikali2483 That's because most people accumulate the vast majority of their music tastes between 10 and 25 years old.
I think you hit the nail on the head. It was all mainstream, so everyone knew all of these bands, then it all faded away after these genres were ultra-saturated with bands. Nowadays, you have the dominance of subcultures over mainstream/"monocultures", so it feels different than it did back then. Pros/cons to both.
THANK YOU we're not just jerking off on nostalgia. This music means something why is that hard to understand

I went to my first festival this summer (Sad Summer) out of curiosity and this video expresses what I was feeling very well.
I felt a lot of the people were there to act/dress emo rather than coming to hear music. Weird vibe. It kinda felt more like a theme park than a show.

I hate to see My Chem lumped in with most of this other music. They've actually held up over time, aren't in it for the money, sound even better than they used to, are headed toward making more music when the time is right creatively...
@103.5Heavener FuCT was pretty dark but that was the end
It's really unfortunate that Emo music is so commercialized, this kinda hits close to home because one of the first songs I listened to and really liked was Boulevard of Broken Dreams, I found a Flipnote of a stick fight on my DS that had it as the background music. I mean I'm Gen Z, but still.
as someone who's defiinitely not the target of your critique, this video comes across as really cruel; and ironically from a duo of people who've stolen their entire M.O. from e.g., Tiny Meat Gang, Kurtis Conner, Danny Gonzalez, Hivemind, etc.

Gotta have credit before you can have debt.
pop punk is one of the first music genres i know to contradict itself in the first two words
You need to understand how important it is to us to reclaim emo, and for that matter nu metal. We actually weren't allowed to unironically like emo in 2005, I was 28 when I finally had the freedom from social constraints and toxic masculinity to actually just listen to fall out boy and remember how actually kind of great it is. That's all this is, people that were constrained by hateful mainstream culture finally reclaiming their taste with a sense of confidence and freedom that teenagers just cant have. That's the magic of 30, you get to just like things without thinking about other peoples oppinions.

@@Killopotamus the amount of times I was called a f****t in highschool and middle school by people who went to when we were young....
Late warped tour era emo was peak emo/metal-core/HotTopic-in-every-mall era emo. The depression and melodrama was all performative at that point (unless you lived in some backwater town where butt rock still ruled.) or just tropes on TV and movies. MCR and FallOutBoy were top charting bands. Emos of that time were completely secure in their place in the cultural moment. So they’re not nostalgic for being bullied/depressed. They’re literally nostalgic for the best years of their youth.
The thing is, My Chemical Romance's whole reunion tour was marked by rejecting this corporatist nostalgia wave
I think they just wanted to play shows to fans again but Live Nation, ect. jumped on that opportunity whether the band wanted that or not
Totally agree
Emo coming back should be regarded by everyone as on par with the world’s livestock suddenly dying. I lived through it and it was the most shallow, corporate and performative shit ever. I know there’s an argument to be made that every youth subculture turns out like this but jesus christ dude. And before anyone’s like ‘but what about mid-west emo?”. That’s also shallow, sounds shit and nothing good can ever come out of the mid-west, it’s impossible.
@@markedgecliff7412 But then like, what modern subculture isn't shallow and vapid? What's a good example of a modern "punk" movement? It's not like the most genuine local DIY bands *aren't* taking from post-hardcore scene shit. Plus it's not like all those bands back in the 2000s were all on the same level of vapid and corporatist. Actually, some of the scene was music that barely resembled one another.
I see this as the modern efficient capitalist sludgification of anything and everything with growing popularity, not something uniquely wrong with emo or the mindset of every band in the subculture.
I think what we should do is look at the individual actions and motivations of these bands instead of looking at the subculture they're culturally grouped in with or the companies that piggyback off their popularity.

it's interesting how some people in the comments are like "it's so unfortunate how commodified emo has become". I think their nostalgia glasses are blocking them from seeing how commercial and mainstream it was becoming back in the late 2000s and early 2010s. I still see some elements of the emo aesthetic in normie fashion to this day and that's thanks to emos back then laying the foundation for that look to be commercialized, the skinny jeans aesthetic is a good example of that. back then a lot of emos seemed to be anti-labels, anti-conformity, anti-mainstream, ect. and yet the "emo" look was very well defined and commercialized.
See also: the entire entertainment industry.

Great video y’all !! This past year I tapped into my emo roots quite a bit. I am more of a music appreciator and love diving into music history/ different genres. This genre I don’t listen to much often because it is regressive/ nostalgic for me. When I moved 8 hours away from my hometown for a year I often would go to the city to the local emo nights or hardcore shows. I enjoyed going because it was the first time in my life I met lots of alternative people irl. Growing up in a small town in the south being emo rawr XD was something I very often was bullied for. I was loud, weird, had a lot of home life issues, substance abuse from an alarming young age. It was a dark time but the music and a couple close friends is what held me up during that time. It does make my stomach turn seeing how big of a commodity cash cow it is now. Feel the same could be said for the goth sub genre. Will say the local emo night in Corpus Christi TX is way more fun than the official emonite I went to in Dallas before the South By So What?! Festival. One of the last CCTX ones I went to before moving back to Oklahoma was a battle of the bands night. Local emo bands playing and winner opened for Craig Owens from Chiodos.

We millennials are getting older and for the most part have acquired some wealth.
