      Spacing info you should be able to get from the seed packets or company website. Mostly that’s only relevant to sowing outdoors because you aren’t going to move them. Rocket and spinach work best direct down outdoors
      Sow sparingly so you don’t need to thin them out too much and give them about 20cm between rows
      Radishes are a bit easier cause they are bigger seeds. Give them about 3cm of space between plants

I grew 15 “container sized” dwarf sunflowers last year but I transplanted 4 of them into my raised bed. We’ve all here the story of Jack and his bean stalk, but noooo one has herd the tale of Chris and the “Christ all mighty that’s not a dwarf” sunflower. They grow to 5ft with an almost 12” head, much to the dismay of it’s kin whom only reached the dizzy height of roughly 700mm with little cute heads. This year let’s grow the giants 😁🤷‍♂️🤦‍♂️

    Thank you so much for including flowers in your video, it's so usefull to know which seeds need heat and those that don't. I plan to grow the heat ones in my laundry room next to a radiator as I dont have an elec point in my greenhouse. The rest I can sow and leave in the greenhouse. I watched another site and they sowed echinacea, poppys and delphiniums outside in milk jugs as they need a cold period to start ? Have you tried any of these methods?
    I had such a bad year growing last year with my veg its made me want to have a veg rest lol and concentrate on flowers this year.

    • @eliandkate
      @eliandkate  2 роки тому +1

      I tried the milk carton thing the other year (there's a video if you want), but I wasn't impressed at all. I spoke to a few US subscribers and they said that the idea of this method is for the types of seeds that would normally be out in the garden exposed to the cold - which kind of makes me wonder what the point is? I would just leave those ones out in the cold? But I'm very aware I maybe just don't understand it properly :D

    • @mandydavis7074
      @mandydavis7074 2 роки тому +1

      I think there are some seeds that have to have to be chilled before they will germinate...I think this is what they are trying to achieve ..I always thought lavender had to go in the fridge before you could sow it but I may be wrong. Anyway, I will go and watch your video on that one then. BTW you are doing a great job here on you tube, you can really see you love gardening and you have a fun sense of humour about it all. Have a great week.

    I don’t know if UK folks can use them, but across the pond we use heat pads. They are waterproof mats we plug in. You place seeds that need heat in pots or trays on top of mat, which is plugged into electric.

    • @eliandkate
      @eliandkate  2 роки тому +1

      😂 yeah they’re used extensively here too. But just remember that hot crops need heat all through their life cycle not just for germination. So before you sow, consider where you will grow those plants until it heats up outside.

    • @eliandkate
      @eliandkate  2 роки тому +2

      Hi Linda, times will depend on what plants you are growing, some plants need 12 hours daylight, some need less, so it's a case of checking how much actual daylight they are getting and then adding on the extra with the grow lights, adjusting as the days get longer/shorter.

Don't know if it will work for foxgloves but it does work for artichokes, Put them in a cold refrigerator (below 10C / 50F but above freezing.) for about a month. If you try this. • @eliandkate
      @eliandkate  2 роки тому +2

      If you have similar temperatures to me they should do. The current temperatures mean they will germinate and grow quite slowly, which is a good thing as the smaller plants need less than bigger more established plants where they will need warmer temperatures.

    I want to grow a lot more flowers this year, and I'm really having to stop myself as the greenhouse isn't heated, and I know if I bring seed trays into the house I'll have fungus gnats all over the place. So I'm trying to be patient and do other jobs (there are SO MANY OTHER JOBS) around the garden until it warms up. I was interested to see you're sowing snapdragons - I've also got snapdragons and rudbeckia to sow. Do you think it's ok to sow them in an unheated greenhouse yet? Or should I stick to chitting potatoes?! My last frost date is mid-May. Thanks for another great video!

    • @eliandkate

      Hi Gail, peppers are a hot crop so they need heat to germinate but will also need heat through their growing cycle, I would keep them indoors until the nights warm up, so for us that's usually late April.

    You have an unheated greenhouse. What is the temperature difference between inside and outside?

    • @eliandkate
      @eliandkate  Рік тому +1

      It depends on the amount of sunshine Irene.
      If it’s sunny it can feel considerably warmer, at this time of year 4 or 5 degrees difference but if it’s not sunny or at night the temperature drops considerably as there’s nothing to heat the greenhouse, so it can sometimes even be a degree colder.
      That’s why I always talk about understanding what plants are hardy enough for your garden or about protection from frost
