While you're right that the kind of clay doesn't matter too much, there is one consideration you need to make. Steer clear of clay containing sulfur, as the sulfur will prevent the silicone from curing properly, ruining both your model and your mold. Great video as always!
Hi Bob. I'm into indoor climbing myself, and I'm told that clear resin holds brake right in your hands in a way that makes extremely sharp pieces, pretty much like obsidian knifes! Apparently the solution is to use powders into the mix, and that's one of the reasons profesional holds are always color. The powders helps to keep the hold together. Anyway, that's what I was told, but seems to me something easy to try. May be you can try to broke one hold and see hoy it brakes, and if the result is secure. As always, awesome work!
Cool tutorial! Thanks for posting! FYI - those 'runnels' on the surface are caused by the epoxy getting a bit to hot in that dimension. Adding some filler may help reduce those, as would using a urethane mass casting resin. :)
Bob, I have a friend that was stick welding while wearing his wedding band and accidentally touched the stinger to the top of his ring while the underside was sitting on the welding table. It was glowing red hot instantly. He had to run to the sink and cool it before he could clip it off. Just another good reason for QALO.
I'll second that recommendation for a Qalo ring. Had mine for a few weeks now and it's pretty awesome. Between lifting, biking, and time in the shop, I haven't worn my metal wedding band for years.
Great! Be sure to go watch ALL of the videos from Punished Props (have we talked about this before? I think we might have). Bill knows a ton about this stuff and I'm learning from him!
I made a bunch of those a couple of years ago. I suggest using foam instead of clay to get a nice and even texture. Also it's a good idea to put a washer into the final mold before you pour, this disperses the forces when you bolt it onto the wall and makes the hold much more durable. Most imporantly, put some poly fibers into the mixture before you pour it. I've seen holds break and shatter that didn't have this reenforcement.
Nice hold! A couple of tips for next time you make one of these: Someone said to carve foam rather than clay for more evenness in texture. Foam is great and delicate and not all foam is the same. I never used clay on smaller holds, just larger hollow-back holds. If you do go with foam, make sure to carefully glue down the finished form to an even flat piece of cardboard so the silicone doesn't get under the mold and float the foam piece. Foam can be really unforgiving, but so can clay. You could use a more malleable wall-material to help save on silicone use. I've used metal air-duct tape, doubling up pieces to build up the wall, then folding-in the tape so the thickness of the silicone is reduced to maybe a couple of centimeters around most of the hold. For this same reason, you will want to make sure to pour enough silicone so that you cover the form you're molding by a couple of centimeters, as well. Not too thick so the hold is impossible to pull, and not too thin you wreck your mold. You'll want to check to for dust, hairs, or string before you pour because they can cause tears in your silicone after it's set, so that when you're pouring urethane, you don't get major deformations in your hold you have to sand off later, or scrap the hold. Also, tears in the mold mean the silicone doesn't last as long because the stress of pulling the hold from mold will exacerbate any damage in the mold. One more thing, when setting your silicone mold, make sure it's placed on an even surface. You'll avoid a lot of sanding the hold to make-up the difference, which can diminish or eliminate entirely complete features of the hold.
I'm making a small, toddler/ small child friendly wall, so I'll probably buy some holds for now, but this will be great when I'm ready to size up to a full jawn!
Bob specified that I COULD be a whole other video, due to its girth. Scrap wood was just saying that he SHOULD do it. Scrap wood City was just saying that he should not waffle with the idea and just do it anyway.
Hi Bob, Tip: If i have the problem you ran into making a mold, that you didn't make enough silicone, i always stick a piece of wood or something else into the silicone to raise the surface level (in a corner or somewhere) works great! I like your videos!
Love the video! I'm a big fan of mold making! Qalo seems like a great company with a great product! One of my friends had their ring finger ripped off simply by falling of a step stool and having the ring getting caught on a hinge. Ouch! So I'll be keeping Qalo in the back of my mind for the future!
I bought the Qalo ring for the exact same reason. Almost lost a finger with a class ring once. Also, be careful when mixing clays and silicones when making molds. I believe air dry clays have sulfur in them which can inhibit curing in certain types of silicones. I think it's the platinum cure silicones. There are sooooo many variations of silicones! Thanks for posting this! Great vid as always
Brilliant I will be looking into this closer... Please do an episode on making a climbing wall I've very interested in that either free standing or one that can attach to the side of a house
Regarding proper silicones to use for molding block molds (the kind you did in this video) I suggest using 1065 Burmans Silicone. It’s 1 base to 10% catalyst. It holds up for years and captures every detail. A little more pricey but worth the quality. The cure time is roughly 12 hours depending on the environment but you will have enough time to evacuate (de-gas) the product. I also suggest doing a “high pour” when pouring your silicone to avoid air bubbles. Hope this helps!
If you are running out of silicone you can always throw something in the areas of the mold that won't do anyting and save some volume :) very cool project!
That is awesome. Have you ever considered 3d printing a mold for a handhold, that way you can make the handhold look like anything and don't have to do all of the steps. I saw a cool guide to making it. Great job.
That is really cool! Rock climbing is such a great workout and really fun. I might have to build a rock climbing wall at my next house if I have the space. Its cool to see you can make your own holds. Keep up the good work!
Please do a climbing wall build video!! Within the next 12 months I'm building a (roughly) 35'x35' shop and I plan to make a portion of the inside AND outside walls climbing walls. I'd love to see your ideas!
Hey I Like To Make Stuff, I've been climbing my whole life, and I love this(I just made some!!) Just wanted to let you know that the bolts are called, in order 1. Flat bolt 2. martini bolt (because it looks like a martini glass. Keep up the AMAZING work!!😃😃
The hold turned out great! Growing up my dad was a railroad mechanic and ended up getting hung off the ground by his wedding ring. I haven't worn mine in 10 years because it's in the way, but the silicone ring is an interesting idea.
I have an opposite experience with my wedding ring. A piece of furniture landed on my finders and the wedding ring absorbed most of that. It's of an elliptical shape since.
hey, you uploaded this on my birthday :-D anyway... this is awesome, I never thought of building my own rock climbing wall... now you've got me thinking!
Hi. Tip: mix the resin with fine sand and forgett about the bubbles or the mold texture. it will come out a lot like normail holds. I have tried this with poliester resin and made a lot of nice holds. sorry for my english
if you are running out of silicon or mold material, you can just add pieces of wood or whatever you have handy on the outskirts of the mold where it won't touch the buck. this will raise the silicon level by filling in areas that don't matter.
Awesome video Bob!! You know I love resin casting videos :) I really want to start doing some work with clay for mold making, great to see that process in this video. I love that climbing wall you made, and thanks for all the tips for the holds at the end, that was great info!
I know right?! And it was totally not planned. In fact I'd planned on tinting the hold blue with some dye, but it hadn't come in yet when I went to make the video. I love the amber look!
Something I did in the past is mix sand into the epoxy before casting to lower costs (and also give the hold some texture). It comes out heavier, and you have to be careful not to add too much sand or else it would just fall apart, but sand is much cheaper than epoxy, so it could be a nice way to save some bucks if you're on a budget.
For the wedding band, I think they are a good idea for anyone that has to use their hands a lot, not just those who work with tools. I know someone who had his finger ripped apart by his ring getting stuck in a volleyball net while playing a competitive match. The finger was ripped in such a weird way that they decided to not even try to place it back and thus that teacher now is missing a finger.
interesting on the wedding band idea. My buddy jumped a chain link fence and almost lost his finger because his ring got stuck when he had rounded the top. In the end it was fortunately only VERY sliced up and not lopped off. Emergency room visit, but he still has 10 fingers.
Those rings would be perfect for the people working on a naval vessel like myself! I keep my band on my necklace due to me working up and down steel diamond shaped laters (damaged my wedding band) and power tools. Thanks i will check them out
Probably my second favourite vid you made so far. My first being the hidden bookshelf. I myself am a climber and well lets just say my bedroom wall might have some handholds...
awesome video! id be super interested to see how you built your wall, as it's something i'd like to do in the future also. AND - love my qalo ring too - great product!
Hey Bob! nice project! I see you were using Jimmy Diresta's Ice pick multitool... that's very cool! Keep on the nice work and thanks for sharing all your knowledge. Regards
Another way you could do this (and prevent spinning) would be to put a metal bar or something along those lines in the bottom when you're building the shape. This way you can just drill one main hole to connect the hold to the bar, then have two screws in the bar (one on each side of the main hole) driving into the wood. Then you just put the hold on the bar and bolt it down and your axis locking screws are hidden.
Very nice Bob! I recently bought a house and i'm thinking about building a climbing wall. It would be nice if you would make a video about it or just a quick showcase of yours :)
3d print some hold molds. Cast that. Would also be cool to make hold molds that are modular ( 4 parts that fit together in different arrangements and with different features to make one mold work for several different hold shapes.
Great project Bob! I was going to make a hang board and was wondering what material you used for the 2 upright holds that you demonstrated as screwed in. Great job!

Hey I'm climbing holds from I like to make stuff. Today we are going to make Bob.
lol dude...

+Brad Ellis nice!!
I would love to have a climbing wall. Looking forward to that video.
Ghos9 You beat me to it :D
Good to see you're in to climbing as well. I've started building an über climbing gazebo. I'll put up a video on the construction.
Loving your mix of concepts lately.
Thank you!!
Molding & casting always looks like so much fun. Cool application and a great demonstration of the process Bob.
"These bugs are destroying me"
Ha.
Love the silicon/epoxy videos of any sort! Keep them coming!
It's really awesome to see you getting into mold making! This is something that I have had on my list for a long time too.
Great! Be sure to go watch ALL of the videos from Punished Props (have we talked about this before? I think we might have). Bill knows a ton about this stuff and I'm learning from him!

This is probably my new favourite video of yours. Awesome stuff Bob!
jeez, the kids must live the life with all of these projects you create.
I was thinking of building a small indoor climbing wall and this video comes up. Perfect. Thank you man.
Do it!

Nice! It would be really awesome if you made a climbing wall one day!
Did you NOT watch the video?
+The HobbyNerd I think what he/ she meant was a video on how Bob made it (I think).
Yeap!
Bob specified that I COULD be a whole other video, due to its girth. Scrap wood was just saying that he SHOULD do it. Scrap wood City was just saying that he should not waffle with the idea and just do it anyway.
He made one today!
Great sponsor! Glad this came out! Can't wait to see your rock wall videos
Great tip on the wedding band. Cool project!
yet another great video Bob, keep it up, channels growing quick
Thank you!!
Very cool project bro! Thumbs up!
Hi Bob,
Tip: If i have the problem you ran into making a mold, that you didn't make enough silicone, i always stick a piece of wood or something else into the silicone to raise the surface level (in a corner or somewhere) works great!

Good call! Anything to displace some of it would work I guess. Thanks!
Love the video! I'm a big fan of mold making!

I'd like to see a video going over some options for degassing molds. Maybe making a reasonably cheap degasser? Either vacuum or vibration.
How has no-one given props to your Moog shirt yet? I love your videos, Bob. I couldn't climb if you paid me to, but this is an awesome video.
People notice the logo in a videos here and there :)
If you are running out of silicone you can always throw something in the areas of the mold that won't do anyting and save some volume :) very cool project!

+CUPholder ah! Good to know, thanks!
I found Qalo after Fallon's injury. I've already sold it to a buddy of mine. I like that I can't feel it weighing on my finger too.
Very well done Bob! I love rock climbing but didnt think about building a wall myself! Very cool!

right on bro, I have been wearing a silicon wedding band for a couple of years now.
I just talked to you about this wall a couple weeks ago.... Applicative!
Love my Qalo ring. Couldn't imagine wearing anything else
cool! that epoxy color is awesome
I know right?! And it was totally not planned. In fact I'd planned on tinting the hold blue with some dye, but it hadn't come in yet when I went to make the video. I love the amber look!
Awesome! More climbing stuff please!
another great video Bob!
Been watching a lot of your videos lately. Love them, but Please show off how to make this climbing wall. Great stuff!
Great video and loving the Moog t-shirt!
If you plan on making a silicone mold you have to make sure you use a sulphur-free clay. Great video, Bob!
nice! when I made my holds I put sand in to the mix for texture.
That's really awesome bob! I can't wait for the video on the rock wall too :)

awesome climbing wall!
Great vid Bob!!!!
Thank you!!
Nice one Bob!
COOL...THE RING LOOKS COOL TOO
Wondering if you'd ever be able to show us a lightbox build? whether for artists to trace or as a mirror for a kids bedroom
Hi Bob! I work in a climbing gym, and In 6 weeks Ill be starting to make some volumes! I would like to see you make a video on how to!
interesting on the wedding band idea. My buddy jumped a chain link fence and almost lost his finger because his ring got stuck when he had rounded the top. In the end it was fortunately only VERY sliced up and not lopped off. Emergency room visit, but he still has 10 fingers.
My family owns a climbing gym and we break a lot of holds this is like the perfect solution!
Bob the builder x) Incredible!
Awesome build, thanks.
Those rings would be perfect for the people working on a naval vessel like myself! I keep my band on my necklace due to me working up and down steel diamond shaped laters (damaged my wedding band) and power tools. Thanks i will check them out
nice build. colour looks awesome.
I also need to switch to a safer ring. I might make though, I don't like the silicone look.
Probably my second favourite vid you made so far. My first being the hidden bookshelf. I myself am a climber and well lets just say my bedroom wall might have some handholds...
hey bob! i watch all your videos and i like it 😀👍👍
Ty bob for the great idea.
Great video.
You e got a climbing wall! And a rope swing tree to tree thing ! U legend
awesome video! id be super interested to see how you built your wall, as it's something i'd like to do in the future also. AND - love my qalo ring too - great product!
Great video btw, Please do a future video on the climbing wall soon
Hey Bob! nice project! I see you were using Jimmy Diresta's Ice pick multitool... that's very cool! Keep on the nice work and thanks for sharing all your knowledge. Regards
Can you or have you already made a video on building the climbing wall? I'm about to venture into that and would love a video on yours it looks cool
Another way you could do this (and prevent spinning) would be to put a metal bar or something along those lines in the bottom when you're building the shape. This way you can just drill one main hole to connect the hold to the bar, then have two screws in the bar (one on each side of the main hole) driving into the wood. I would love to see the climbing wall project video.
A climbing wall video would be great if you end up doing one!
Drinking game: take a shot whenever Bob says "hole"
You were putting silicone into a vacuum chamber months before Grant Thompson did!
DiResta Ice Pick!!! nice dude
Very nice project!
Good idea man 👍🏽
I'd love to see how you made the climbing wall. Make it into a video like you said!
Hey, what ply board thickness is your climbing wall? Definitely need that on a video :-)
3/4"
Awesome, thanks. Once again great videos. Hope things are going well for you.
+I Like To Make Stuff I can't find a video on how to build your Rockwall is it not made? cuz that looks like a very interesting build video.
wbap hellcat I never made one, but mayb in the future.
that would be cool
Very nice Bob!
I recently bought a house and i'm thinking about building a climbing wall. It would be nice if you would make a video about it or just a quick showcase of yours :)
3d print some hold molds. Cast that. Would also be cool to make hold molds that are modular ( 4 parts that fit together in different arrangements and with different features to make one mold work for several different hold shapes.
can you do a episode about your climbing wall? we would like to make one for our group of boyscouts in Coevorden Holland.
Great project Bob! I was going to make a hang board and was wondering what material you used for the 2 upright holds that you demonstrated as screwed in. Great job!
It was an epoxy resin as well. I believe that was Bondo, if I remember correctly. You can get it at any big box or auto parts store.
+I Like To Make Stuff Great! Thanks again!
Wooow nice video men 🙌🙌
wow
