I wouldn’t recommend using the durag to wash your hair but instead use the skull cap because when i used the durag the dirt just stayed in my hair and smeared all around my dreads

I never got my dreads professionally done. I started twisting them myself around my 6th month and i waited about 4 months between each rewtist.

@@TheMunchBowl Oh ok. Because I started my freeform dreads about 2 months and 2 weeks ago, and I had some good amount length to them when I started. Now it seems that the sponge is getting useless and my hair isn’t really going aint where when I twist it. It’s locked and all, I just don’t know what to do at this point

It depends on the look you want. You can either let it freeform or you can retwist it. For me, when I got bored of my hair I started retwisting but when I was tired of that stage, I started semifreeforming. It’s all about getting your dreads the way you want them

What do you mean by untrained? Also to start semifreeforming, just wash your hair and stop getting retwists.

I've had my starter locks for 3 weeks. I needed to wash because I didn't have an initial wash for about a week prior to getting them (my hair was already like 6" long).
I used a du rag for the ash and a t shirt to dry. Very gentle wash and very soft pat for the dry.
My hair was a little damp throughout the day but it dried perfect. All my locs are still in form. I do have new growth but i just need a retwist.

You could use a sponge but technically it isn't freeform. If you want to freeform, just wash your hair and don't twist it. Also the puffing up doesn't matter because it's part of the process.
