Bears and wet... Blah! God bless you all that are not pre occupied with those elements. Takes the fun out of it for me... I’ll watch you from here and envy your adventures in comfort without!
Jess! You lost your soup strainer/sniffle sponge! I get it, every now and then I just have to hack off all my dermal insulation and start over. I broke down and ordered one of the tent hammocks! Can't wait for it to get here! I have also contacted Aquaquest to see if they would build me a Defender with two more of the center tie out strips. One down the middle of each pannel. That should give enough tie outs to do anything you could think of. Glad to see you out and enjoying the wall-free world!
Love it! Yeah, a little change with face fuzz. Really awesome to hear you are getting the tent hammock! Hope to use it for my next trip out. Its super cool. May need a little seam seal, but pretty minimal up top at ridgeline. Hope AQ delivers on the tarp! That would be amazing. Talk about options. I have read plenty of gripes about the weight on the defender tarps, but after using the palatka for a couple years, it’s really not an issue.
@@EnduranceRoom yup, they are heavy when compared to cheapie hardware store poly tarps, silnylon, or the $$$$ spun helium super light materials. But, I would argue that it is ideal for canoe campers, winter pulk sled campers, bushcrafters, etc. It fits as a lighter weight option to canvas, with many of the same benefits. On the flip side, Aquaquest does offer 2 other tarp families which are made of much lighter materials. I get it...weight is something we all need to keep an eye on, but I do not find the Defender to be an anchor when carrying. But then, I am not a distance crushing through hiker, so my needs and perspective would not be valid to those folks.
throw back Jess, thanks for putting this on the front page, wouldn't have found it otherwise. Leaving the moustache at home was clever, gotta keep things ultralight.

Thank you! The blanket I have has been patched up so many times. Gorilla tape really is good stuff. The blanket will catch an ember from the fire. Hit it with a little tape and its good to go.
Lol, I had a lot of fun with my beard when I shaved it off for the summer. Took it off a piece at a time, and had grown the moustache extra long in advance. I don't know about that Finnish bag for a sleeping bag though. Looks like it would make a lot of condensation. And I never use any of my bags for food. I keep one just for that, cuz it will make your sleeping bag smell like food once you put it back in, and I've also had raccoons manage to get into my bear set up, and then the stuff sack was destroyed. Thanks for the post.
I very seldom cut Firewood. I break a good bit but don't cut. I'll gather up a couple of contractor trash bags full of thumb sized sticks and make a "V" shape with a couple of 4 or 5 inch pieces and feed the small stuff to the coal bed. Maybe put a couple of big sticks horizontal where the "V" connects and it is awesome, like a heater, and pretty to look at too. But I don't do anything like most people, I've gotten lazy in my old age and try to keep everything "Plain and Simple ".
Cool video! That tarp configuration works great when there's no trees. I've considered trying that as well except using two guy lines attached to the pole at angles to keep my fire close and centered. Liked your steak cook. Gotta love steak on a stick 👍
One of my favorite tricks is to use a trash compactor bag as a pack liner. Pretty cheap, multi-purpose, and, if you do break or lose it, it’s not too painful. That said, I’ve been using the same one for five years or so!
That was a good one 👍 .. thanks for sharing .. Bears .. here in my neck of the woods 'Wildschwein' are our only hazard and unarmed, that's enough for me. Take care .. stay safe ..
Thanks Jess. I think I’ll use my walking stick for my pole. I’m definitely going to try this set up. My DD doesn’t have that pocket for the pole. That’s a super nice feature on your tarp.
Thanks Kris! DDs are nice tarps for sure. Having the back guyed off really helps. I ended up putting another pole in the back to pitch it up a bit more. Not sure if came across in the video.
Yeah buddy the tarps are the best as are their dry bags. I'd like to get a jerven and give it a try be nice to carry a smaller sleeping load. Here in Tennessee, we have black bear and cougar that are making a come back. Shaving off the stach looks pretty good. Enjoyed the video very much. Safe journeys.
thank you Opal! I really like the jerven so far. Lots of options with it. For hunting, I think it will really shine. I think I would rather deal with a bear than a cat. They are both up in NY. Have a good one

Great tarps, I use the 10 x13 over my hammock. I keep looking at those Jervens, love the concept but wow, can't pry my wallet open that far LOL. Looks like you had a good time!
Jess you need a gransfors bruk hatchet. Investment. But absolutely worth having. And please bring back the chops. Youd look like wyatt earp or something haha.
Hey! Yeah, it was good to put it to use. Really like it. Looking forward to using it as a shelter. Found a military channel doing stuff with the jerven. Was quite good. I will see if I can find a link.
@@EnduranceRoom Jupp there they are 👍 Still think the basic set up is the best, those tarp tent like configurations makes more sense with just a tarp I think.

Keep the awesome content coming :) Mustve been so relaxing listening to that water all night ...I assume thats what I hear?
Yeah, definitely the water. Was pretty soothing. Much better than the sounds of civilization. I hear ya on the weather. Its been pretty soggy hear as well.
Great video! Can you please tell me what the night time temperatures were? I'm researching the Jerven Hunter and am trying to see if it will meet my needs, without a ton of additional gear to supplement it. Thanks for any information that you can provide about realistic use in the cold or heat!
Great Video! So would you say the Jerven as an upgrade over the Ranger Roll with casualty blanket would be worth the investment? Also, what is the diameter/length of the Jerven when packed up? Thanks!
It is definitely an upgrade to the ranger roll. Lots of options you can do with it. Packed up, it is compressible, so it varies, but I would estimate about 5”x18” roughly.
This bag (jääkäri m) has straps that can be extended at bottom of bag to do just that. Other bags, I will often just paracord and a Canadian jam or arbor knot, to tension the tarp or ground pad to the bottom of the bag.
