This was lots of fun! But the poor design with a hole near the spur gear stopped play early as a few small stones got stuck between the spur & pinion. Aside from that this is a really Fun RC Car, and ideal as it shares the same chassis as the FTX RC cars, so spares are readily available!

I liked you before this video and bought a CR-18 after your video on them but now after the XR2 montage I also fully respect your opinion of whats good and what's not. The last silver mk1 was my personal favourite of yours 👏🏻👌🏻
42 mph was pretty impressive, but at 234 dollars it isn’t cheap . Most people would be running it in a real world setting just like you did . So the rocks getting into pinion gears might be enough of a reason to avoid it . And if you have an indoor track with carpet or a smooth surface it might be a pretty good option. Either way it was a good review.
There's also nitro version
After running this through water and then removing the stones that got stuck in the spur/pinion, I charged the battery again and went for a run in the garden, and the ESC went up in smoke...... it’s not waterproof. 😭🤣👍
or maybe it doesn't take 3s very well...
but if you ran it in the garden with 2s, the problem is definetly the water
Doh! Fun while it lasted though.
Yeah, plug a 2s in....and up it went!
Cheers for the update
That's a bummer would of thought it was waterproof most brushless systems are. Thanks for the vid 👍🤘
Your channel has been super helpful in helping me find a way back into the RC world! Bringing light to cars like this is just what I'm after
Cheers Rich. Glad it's helped you 😎
It really gives more power on 3s battery. Nice and steady looks easy to handle. Thanks Tom for another good and honest review
i just found ur channel
i can ezly say i absolutely love ur choice of cars.
great channel .keep up!
Thanks dude
The rally cars are growing on me but you're right, that body definitely needs a trimming! Thanks for the honest reviews! 👍🍻
Thanks mate... yeah body needs to be better really
@@TomleyRC really common with RTR's tho, I'm usually lowering the body then trimming it to fit better.
As they say in the UK .... This was a Proper Video Mate!!!, Seems rally is making a comeback, great review on this thing, I'm considering it myself now.
'Proper Video Mate'...haha. Cheers for watching dude.
Love your retro Ford’s. Please make a video about them. Would love it!
haha the good old XR2! Happy days they were... I've got the same RC rally as this, except under the guise of FTX Hooligan. It's one of the cars I've used at my local club racing in the rally class for some time. It's taken a while to get there with its setup but it's worked out well. It has the following: 4300kv 3650 motor, 80A esc, TowerPro 20kg metal geared servo, FlySky radio, runs on 2S, 14t pinion, various ali FTX option parts (hubs etc to limit play and wear), FTX anti-role bars. It's been a great RC, and after all these years it had its first breakage last month, a quick fix to replace a front lower suspension arm and it was back on the track soon after. I've also added weight to the chassis, which has helped it a lot! With it being a fairly light RC it was easily bossed around and off the track by other RC's, but not anymore. The car is a lot more planted now, and handles far better. The FTX model also came with ali shocks. I found the stock tyres once worn in were very grippy on tarmac, though I'm using other treads now with a slightly lower profile. edit - the stuck stone issue - the Hooligan came with a removable piece to expose the pinion, it completely seals the gears. Not sure why the VRX doesn't have this?
I'm in love wanted so much see some rally cars on now looks they coming can't wait for more like that 👍 just probably would soap the body for Evo rally shell definitely
Sick video tomley! What camera set up are you using? Chest mount or head mount.?
Cheers dude.
I have the original FTX Hooligan brushless. It's a handful and I love it. It's got a metal spur gear. Noisy but lasts longer than the plastic ones. I tried it on 3s. I couldn't handle it. 2s only now. Plenty of oomph for me 😀👍👍
I think I may stick a metal one in this. 2s is plenty on the rough stuff.
Dreamy Montage... Highly appreciated!
Thanks Matt
That is one smooth rally!!! Runs well, just needs the mesh cover over the innards and you are good to go!! Oh yeah and a triple the body shop for some needed trimming.
Love the XR2s. I had a ‘90 xr3i. Good times!
The 80's/90's were the best for Cars
Pretty impressive little car, dude! Really nice! 😃
Great bashing and review!
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Thanks mate 😎
"get some cool shots for ya" right after a puddle flips over LoL. Great video bro, subbed.
haha yeah...right on cue! Cheers dude.
Really nice car Bro!! Great review. Thanks for share!! Yeaaahh!!
Thank you
Great review my friend! Liked!😁👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Thank you
Lovely selection of XR2's at the start, Phil. I had to make do with the cheaper Nova SRi's! Anyway, cool rally car, can't believe you ran it at 40+ on that narrow path, I'd have been in the bushes! Great test, mate. :))
Thanks Mark... That was probably bout half the XR2's i've had lol... I was a bit obsessed for 10yrs or so! 40 on that path was just lucky haha, I usually need at least an olympic swimming pool width!
Just in case ya didn't know, Australia has XR6's (some turboed even!) and XR8's..
After reading your comment the esc went up in smoke brought back bad memories when I had esc go up in smoke indoors, the smell is terrible, not bad rc shame about the hole 👍🏻
cool rc,nice run,cool video
Wow, alot faster than the WLtoys 989 rally/drift car, can't believe thats not waterproof! Just like my 12428, I purposely water logged it to see what would happen lol, lots of smoke.
Do a video of that add on on the controller for steering. Show us how you do your videos and set up and geer. Thanks. Love the videos.😎😎😎
haha...that's an old roll of cellotape with a cable tie around it. But maybe I will do a video of what stuff I use
Ahh those pepperpot wheels on the XR2!
After 3years from my last comment, i still got my ftx hooligan i modified it very heavy like all carbon chassis, alu parts, better shocks and tires, servo. This thing is awesome fun to drive now. But only using 2s, the 3s is to much it reach 80km/h at 3s.
Great one, like you showing in km/h too😀🇳🇴
No probs dude
It needs a custom debris plate, or something from entering the rally car, nice testing it, always keep going on upgrades🤨🤔👍🤯
Damn! Got to get one of these!
Good car I just bought the MK explorer 1/7 scale its rapid on 6s I am taking it for a speed coz my skyrc performance box is hear
I'm not a fan of the body fit and thin chassis, but this thing is pretty impressive for what it is. Those knobbies make all the difference.
Ahh my first car the Fiesta XR2 what a beaut.
Does it take regular 1/10 body shells as well or only the rally ones? Thank you
Have you seen that video from RCDude81 where he makes a arrma typhoon into a rally with a delta plastics 1/8 scale rally body? It looks awesome. It’s probably the best looking and performing rally outside the HPI ken block.
Yes, looks awesome! And Crazy!
Nice looking car except for the body which looks a bit off and looks like it got some good ground clearance. Not bad for someone for a start up RC car.
Love the rc Love xr2s
Same chassis as the VRX buggy,FTX buggy and Integy buggy..They are darn good for the price
You can get the spur gear cover or they make lexan upper chassis covers..Or cut out a relief hole under the spur..You could always do the full carbon chassis conversion..The Integy version comes with a re-branded Hobbywing 60 amp ESC and a 10t motor with a Flysky GT3B..It's only $160 but I got it on sale half price ..Geared up a bit to 26t pinion and added billet spur stock size and it did over 50mph..Changed motor to 9t 4370kv lowered it down on Kforce Racing street buggy wheels and tires and it flys!! I gtta record a speed run soon lol
Hop up: swap out that steering servo, a Dumbo receiver with the built-in gyro, dump the tx that needs all those AAs, including the odd one, (how could you!) and it would be a nice rally car.
haha.....
Had 1....great car
All those XR2s...so much love...
I've also had a similar amount of Golf GTi's (Mk1 & 2)... love an 80's Hot Hatch
@@TomleyRC I love Mk 1 and 2 Golfs!
www.eurorc.com/page/105/how-to-seal-ftx-carnagebugsta-gear-cover
Above is a link to how to better seal the spur/pinion cover.
The original ftx Vantage/Carnage/Hooligans had no spur cover and the hole in the chassis below the spur. The cover was an after thought/mod on later versions, which probably explains why it is not very good. It's a cheap and easy fix but admittedly something you should not have to do to a new car. I have the FTX Vantage, which is essentially the buggy version. I have to say on loose gravel more than 2s power is a waste as it is just crazy wheel spinning everywhere. I have even toned down the punch via an ESC program card and it is still loads of fun. I'd say the VRXs and FTXs are not really platforms worthy pricey upgrades, but they good value stock bashers which are cheap and easy to repair. I clipped a curb this weekend and broke the plastic part that holds the A arm pin. A replacement is £4 and will be here in a few days. I considered the £12 aluminium upgrade but thought it's probably best to have a cheap sacrificial part rather than transfer stresses to more costly areas.
Thanks Dan... I'll check it out
What happened to there carbon fiber frames. I only saw one from vrx racing in a 1/8 truck. But I think they should made it for a rally car like this
It's a nice ride that's for sure Govna, the body looks a little toy-ish, she's fast, but, NOT CHEAP!!! Banggood's got them listed for $233, that's a little rich for a medium level RC, still steep though.... I like how it handled!!
👍💯
Yeah...not all that cheap. Getting close to Arrma money
That fast mate for 3s.
Yeah, I was impressed!
Not a bad lil car at all just not to keen on the shell but performance wise it looks very fun
Does it worth it or is any other better budget rally RC? Btw great video.
Not many other RTR Rally cars about. Most people make their own from a 1/10 Buggy chassis
It'll handle better if you wind the preload collars up some. They have the suspension pretty much topped out from the factory which can lead to some undesirable handling characteristics (also it looks kind of silly lifted up like that)
Yeah agree.... I sometimes give them a bit of a tweak, but like to run them as they come straight out the box first...
@@TomleyRC I gotcha. I definitely get not wanting to mod them for a review but shock collars should be fair game. Especially when they are that hilariously far off.
lol yup, even box stock I know what I want to see the suspension doing when its on the table. 1/8" to 3/16" settling under its own weight for most, 1/4" to 5/16" if its a longer travel off road buggy/truck. same for shock oil, as light as I can go without any bounce from a 8-12" drop (depending on vehicle type). I like soft quick reactive setups, pan might slap sometimes but tires stay on the ground more often with some negative suspension travel dialed and giving a bit more body roll weight transfer cornering. an on road car, cut all those numbers in half! its a completely different setup for LTO cars, pan cars etc.
I got the ftx hooligan which is nearly the same i really like to drift with the rally car on loose ground i put a gyro in it because at higher speeds one bump and it goes thru the next wall:)
Gyros make a big difference 👍
I am a little ocd so that was kinda funny
Likes and subbed the sec we hit the XR2 flashbacks :P Had a C reg with 43k on the clock.. body started to fail :(
haha cheer dude. The Rust was a big problem, most of mine went that way
They do the bugsta two there is a gap in the motor mount I blocked mine with hot glue and yes it is stupid and same happened two mine with the stone getting stuck and you can get a harden spur gear for it on line
You wouldn’t think they would leave a gap like that. It shouldn’t be too hard to fill that gap with something.
Have a great day and be safe out there!
Yeah, should be relatively easy to fix
You probably know by now ? But Ford did the xr series , xr2=fiesta, xr3 = escort, xr4 = Sierra. Nice video , cheers mate.
0:30 😅
Now if only the TC8 could do that.
1:20 LOL
Is that a roll of sticky tape round the throttle on your controller? Is that for one handed operation? 😆👍😆
Yes..... Transmitter Hack, I'm going to Patent it! haha
Nice bit of kit. My eyes watching you ha ha ha. I still have a problem with utube not your channel many thanks
So whats the plans for this now ?? Course race against the raining champ the mini ??
Upgraded spur gear, fix the hole where the stones get in and then give it another run I think
Hi mate.
What is the app you have to see the velocity?
Link to the SkyRC 020 in the description
Not the same chassis as the Carnage. I went 3s brushless with my Hooligan 5 years ago, first problem I had was the tyres, ripped one off the rim first run. Went for Kyosho DRX VE wheels/tyres instead. It's a little beast. Got 30mph on a beach with a 3000kv can.
I thought it was.... must be pretty similar though as I can't imagine FTX having a completely different one for a similar platform.
@@TomleyRC The Carnage is slighty wider. The Hooligan and Vantage are the same. I'm a bit of a nerd when it comes to these models, I've owned a Carnage since '13, a Hooligan since '15 and I also had a Quanum Vandal (Vantage).
@@timtheveg do you mean the carnage chassis is wider or is it just the suspension/a arms to support the bigger tyres.
If I wanted to convert my vantage to a hooligan, would it just be the body, mounting posts and front bumper?
@@danp2237 the Carnage chassis itself is slightly wider.
To convert Vantage to Hooligan, yeah, I believe it is just posts, bumper, wheels and body.
I feel like 2s power is more than enough, if your going to race 2 of these, 2s would likely win over 3s since it just looks uncontrollable on 3s, obviously not on a straight drag race, but an actual track with hairpins and what not, as long as you can get it somewhat sideways on 2s, no reason to put 3s in
Is this hetter than Traxxas Fiesta?
Any idea to solve the cg on this rally car
Front body post should be lower. I think...
Full bearing?
what gps do you use to check speed with the app
SkyRC GSM020 (Link in the description)
What would cause the front wheels on this to bind and lift the suspension ? Car drives but when turning it vibrates Looads
Tyres hitting the foam bumper on full lock?
@@colwyn9 no mate, the suspension lifts like its going over a bump even with the steering centered,
I have a XR4 sedan in America.
Cool car dude
Do you no where I can get a MK2 xr2 RC body? Been looking for one for ages and would love one
I don’t…. I would love one though . I’ve had about 10 Mk2 XR2’s and 2 Mk1’s 😎
Please change that battery to match lol
I'd rather buy the tactic ttx300 for $58 and put it in this just to save on 4 batterys....
But... for $100 more, i'd rather buy a bigrock or w/e.
8 Double AA's!...That's some Crazy 80's/90's Tech!
Water and me don’t mix. I just can’t get into it. Even if they say it’s water proof my brain can’t get past the idea that electronics don’t want to be in water!
haha... a lot are like that. I'm the opposite
after you've done some waterproofing and run some boats that goes away.
Your dead rabbit comment lol. I know an awesome Irish punk/folk band named the dead rabbits
This Support 3s Battery?
Yes
Spur on Ebay 65 Tooth Aluminum Spur Gear for Quanum Vandal, FTX Vantage/Carnage & Integy i10 search this to find it
Thanks mate
XR 4 was the sierra 2.8i
Yes... a cool 80's icon
I would never use 8 AA batteries, it's ridiculous: Take the battery tray out, stick (with hot glue) a small step-up converter in its place, set the converter to 8X1.55=12.4Volts and power it with a single rechargeable 18650 battery - you can get a used one off an old laptop for peanuts! The whole setup will cost less than 8 AA's!
I'd say a pair of 18650's just too get some power too the built in receiver, 8.4v or a small 2s lipo.
@@Mini-z1994 there is no need, those things are very powerful...
@@thepilotxproject4035 well in terms of amperage perhaps but if you want range you need voltage as well in most of these radios.
@@Mini-z1994 hence the step up converter!
Seems like you really miss your fast fords eh?
Yes, 100%
Get out of there Sony!!
Uh you said its cheap and I was thinking like 100€ and then its 200€ 😑
Sierra xr4i
save your number get a second hand traxxas. 60km of 3s is well slow
Shame vrx (I discovered this the hard way!) Has those stupid body posts and servo saver and the same week sport as ftx
cheap? hahahahaha im damn poor!
Cheap rc car????🧐
Argh you don’t know what you been missing, I’ve had 3 XR4
1 Xr4i A reg Rwd
1x XR4X4 2.8
1x XR4X4 2.9
I had a 2.0 GLXi for a bit lol
Tomley RC
I had a 2.0 gearbox in the 2.8 short ratios but madness to accelerate out of a bend 😠 as I found out when i parked in Into a tree side on
“Cheap” Shit jesus we Americans are rich and spoiled lol
it isn't cheap bruh
It is compared to the HPI WR8
First
Uh. You guys in the UK have way different definitions of the word “cheap”. Also, you must be single, because if I spent that much on an rc car, my wife would divorce me.
Ahh you married one of those "happy wife, happy life" types eh? I feel sorry for you man. Although, even if she was an rc enthusiast she would still be mad, this car seems like a terrible deal for the quality of what you get.
So ugly the shell not fit dont like it
Yeah...needs work
