- This is the Carisma M48S Colin McRae Subaru Rally Car, and out the box is was very slow for a Brushless RC Car. I've made it Way Faster! The combo will work in most 8th & 10th scale RC Cars, just check your motor shaft size and clearance. (3650 = 540 size, 3660 = 550 size)

F550 motors are equivalent to a normal 3650 or 540 for internals. Like F540 motors are equivalent to a 380 sized motor. The F is for finned.

I love how the rear squats under hard acceleration and the new motor and esc combo has accentuated that perfectly! Looks just like the real thing! Great videography as always 👍👍
Back in the day (late '90s) I used to belt tyres myself. Turn them inside out and run a strip of duct tape around the inside of the tyre. Worked remarkably well to stop tyres ballooning. Fabric surgical tape also worked well.

This a very worthwhile video. It shows how you can easily and cheaply make a car faster and more fun. I think this will encourage people to upgrade their rc's. Great job.

I don’t think you can ever take it too far. For me, that’s what this hobby is all about. As far as rally cars, I think the HPI WRX FLUX, is the winner.
I mean, if the car can handle it then sure. But each car has its limits, this one seems to have its limits at 4500kv on 2S, _maybe_ 3S with better tires and driveshafts and a better setup.
You could lock the front diff. That would send most of the power to the front wheels, which would help keep it straight.

I have 60 amp surpass esc in my tamiya tt02 rally car and it takes small stones in the fan constantly. Super annoying! I clued speaker grille cloth over the fan and it helps. Also took out fan screws, so i can clean it whitout tools. Positive is, my fan looks like it went through hell with missing blades and busted bearing, but still runs and does it job!

Amazon years ago I think. It's a Gas Soldering iron.. came with a blow torch adaptor

I used an 80a on a 4500kv motor, and that was wild. You are mental for going 120a. In all fairness, it is larger than the RC I used.

In theory a faster RC is better but speed is nothing without control. But it’s always FUN when you realize an RC is simply to fast for its own good 😮
tbh i think its perfect no reason to go full throttle but the power and acceleration of the bigger motor is perfect for those rally style driving
Bought one of these and it was painfully slow. We also managed to kill the shock tower on the first run. Tookk your advice and got hold of a 3900KV Brushless with ESC from Amazon and now it goes like stink. Modified the shock tower and replaced with aluminium
Now it rolls in SPECTACULAR MCRAE STYLE!, I love that!!

I run a Mamba Max (the realy old one) mit 5400kv in my Tamiya TB-03, but only on 2S. I think on 3S the fun would not be much more, but the problems will increase.

I was watching the Paddlesworth video today of their rally stage, the stock slow motor is designed exactly for that, narrow twisty rally stages but, like you I'd put a faster motor in too.

I did something similar to my Tamiya Alfa GTV.
It does wheelies now but is almost uncontrollable.
Can only go 75% throttle.

Oh yeah, double the fun.. until you crash into something lol. I just got the Mini T back together and put a 4800kv motor in it. More docile and controllable, but I kinda miss the 6000kv insanity, but that's what breaks parts.

All you needed to do is, change the tires and springs to low profiles/short dampers and she would coast at high speeds.
I've never been a Subaru fan but that body style WRX has always been one of my favorite looking cars. That Colin McRae blue and gold still looks great. This is a dumb question but, are RC motors mounting holes standardized? Everything I have is RTR and haven't swapped motors.
Way better setup than stock. Wonder if Carisma even tested the car before production 🤔

Every cheap black motor I have had in the last three years ran quick but broke all the shafts on the pinion side right after it comes out of the can. Can't find replacement rotors anywhere. And esc's are a joke anymore under $50 usd. I'm just going to save a little and get good system.
If you got the new rocket v2 on 6s that would be good too. Maybe 4s to save the gears ha
Tomley what is that app that u use to see the speed of the car?
Those "ribbed" F540 motors are actually smaller 28 mm diameter inside. It would go even better if you used a full size 540. That said, it doesn't lack in power, in fact, it seems like a sweet spot for the size of the car.
Phil, could you play with the throttle rates on 3s to make it more controllable?

Most rc models come with cheap slow esc/motor combos until you get up into the more expensive bashers or crawlers!
Upgrading is always worth the hassle :)

@@cyrusshellard3905well not everyone can afford to buy the better car straight away,I'm lucky ,I've a decent job so I can,but 25 years ago when I first got into rc I couldn't afford to buy the best as I was young with no money,so I had to buy the cheaper option and upgrade as and when I could afford to. The way things are now in the UK since Brexit and the war etc nobody's got much spare cash,prices have doubled and when you've got mortgage/rent,gas,electricity, phone bill,water bill,TV licence, car,credit cards,petrol, clothes and most expensive..kids ,I think a lot of people who love rc are buying cheaper brands like wltoys, ftx,rlaarlo etc and doing them up as it's easier to pay in stages rather than £1000+ all in one go

No experience with the esc's but the Rocket motors are great with a Hobbywing ESC.

Mr. Tomley how you been?? Well what be good esc and motor i should put into a clone hpi .. its supposed to be a exceed mad beast 1/8.. but im build it up... is surpass esc actually good . Or should i go hobbywing.?? And what kv should a motor be in a 1/8 monster 👻 truck 🛻 .. i have another exceed mad beast truck i was going to build up.. but just wondering it be a waste and i should just buy a different rc monster truck..

Good video and not a surprising result. Would be curious how the stock motor would do with the better esc or the better motor with the stock esc. Just to see if it’s the entire stock combo or one of the parts.
I think the stock motor just didn't have the RPM it needed. 3300kv - 3500kv would probably be the sweet spot

Hey Tomley, what’s the app on your phone you’re using? Is it using my laps?
I'm curious on if you increased the pinion on the original setup how much speed you could get. seems to be a pretty small pinion for the stock KV rating.
Those F540 - F550 motors are not the same as a traditional 540 - 550 motors, internally they use the smaller diameter rotor that is found in 380-390 size motors. The large diameter motor can is due to the external cooling fins, with a propper 36X can motor it would be even more ballistic lol. Those F series motor are around 800w, the true 3660 motors are 1200w. Just checked my shaft size, See what you mean oooo errrr.

HAHA That was awesome! Way to bring that rig to life. Carisma really dropped the ball on this rig. Terrible electronics and basic design all the way around. By the time you upgrade and buy the 3S battery you could have got the HPI WR8 or NEW CEN Ford Puma.

I cant rly see why its this expensive, Carisma are usually on the cheaper side. For this price id much rather get a Tamiya XV02, LC Racing PTG, or a HPI WR8. All those are better options, the first two being cheaper but u need all electronics. BUT u will end up with a much better option chosing either of these three tbh!
