Hi I am a production designer in the film industry and I do a lot of mask designs and am constantly looking for cool eye making techniques. I have to say this was by far the best video I have seen on the topic. The length put me off at first, since I thought it would be pretty repetitive with someone just jabbering on, but all the information you past along in a fresh and insightful way. I am glad I said what the hell I have time to kill and clicked on it anyway. I also want to agree with you for other artists out there that give up cause they think there work is not good, well it isn't and that's OK cause even practiced artists work stinks most of the time. It takes years sometimes to produce something that is grand and even then you will find fault with it. Just don't give up you will create a masterpiece one day. And all the struggle is worth it. It doesn't mean anything if it is easy, art is about the power of emotion and the struggle to bring it out! Stanley Kubrick once said, "In the end, the test of a work of art, is our affection for it, not our ability to explain why it is good." That was so cool. I wasn't sure if wanted to watch a 42min video about something I wasn't particularly interested in, but it's fantastic. The end piece is beautiful - truly stunning effect, yet it seems quite doable for someone who is reasonably artistic.
Saying that, Yvonne is very talented and making something look easy doesn't mean it is easy.
Oh, and the 42 minutes flies by.

I didn't realize how long the video was until it was almost done. The time flies by, and with each colour reveal, the desire to see the finished piece gets stronger. Great work!!

I have been using this exact method for about 7 years now and it really works well, It's nice to see someone else doing this using nail varnish too and doing the whole scratching/scraping technique, it produces such a great dimensional finish and you explain it really well, it's funny that I own more nail varnish than any woman I know (I'm male) and people laugh when I tell them that, but are really surprised when I show them what can be achieved. I make mine in pairs as I make them for puppets, but I mark off the very center with an adhesive plastic disk and finish with the pupil, sometimes I will add a few layers of clear nail varnish to the center before the black just to give it a little more depth!! great tutorial!!

Do you ever bake your dragon eyes in polymer clay ?.. on some of mine the colors completely changed ( from red to yellow) and some the colors disappeared all together have you ever had this happen?

I use an awl AND a flathead 2" pin for scratching out. The latter gives me a finer line which is good for smaller diameter cabochons.
Love the tutorial! They look amazing! If you have nail polish that doesnt have balls in it buy a box of BBs like for a BB gun. A little milk carton size is roughly 5 bucks. I would put a BB in all my nail polish. I also took baby food or mason jars and put about a half inch of BBs in the bottom. Fill it up with some water and they are wonderful for cleaning off paint brushes.

Awesome! I am so glad to help. Ill tell ya what, Ive been watching your videos for the past couple hours. Back when I did chain mail I hand wrapped coils and tried snipping them off with wire cutters. I ended up getting discouraged because all my jump rings had V shaped cuts in them. Your videos has really gotten me wanting to resupply myself with leather and metal.
The v shaped cuts are kind of unavoidable, but if you are willing to take a little extra time, and sacrifice a little more material, you can mitigate the V. The side of the cutters that is ground will give you the deep V, and the flat side a shallow, nearly flat, V.
Start by nipping off the end of the wire with the flat side of the cutters toward the ring you are about to cut., Flip the cutters over and nip the ring off the coil. (again with the flat toward the ring) Then you flip the cutters again and nip the open end off again, and repeat for each ring. You will end up losing a bb sized nib of wire for each ring you cut off, but instead of one shallow and one deep V, you will get two shallow V's.
If you want to put in a touch more effort you can rub the edges smoother on a file. There are also bits for drills with a cup shaped end to round, or smooth, the ends. (at least there use to be. I'm out of practice)

I love this project and your video! I wanted a big eye so I went to Dollar Tree and bought some magnifying glasses. I took the rim off and just did my first dragon eye. It is not as beautiful as the one in the video, but it came out spectacular! I also picked up an eyeglass repair kit and use the tiny screwdrivers for scratching. They are easier for children to use too. Thank you for an amazing, fun and awesome craft!!!

Awesome. It this something to eventually do with my daughter to encourage her to be crafty/creative. Yeah, she's only 3, but that is the best time I think to plant the seeds.

I once a year go to a children's institution in the north of Peru to craft with the kids, and each time struggle to find something that the older teen boys will enjoy doing. This was MAGIC, it fitted all ages from 9 up. It is always a joy to see how with the same materials the results are so unique. They were so happy and proud with their shimmering creations that I decided to write in the name of each one of them that now has a beautiful pendant to show off to REALLY thank you for sharing your know-how with this tutorial. You know in Peru they buy those eyes to put atound their house an doors to keep the evil out. They are called evil eyes. I saw a documentary on it. Its widely used an the gift store have lots. Its a known fact that voo doo is practiced byt the eyes wart off the evil. evil eyes

@@rhondaroberts373 Voodoo is practiced more in the Caribbean. Almost nobody in Peru or other parts of Latinamerica practice Voodoo besides around the Caribbean.

OOh darliN! Your a lifesaver!! I have just dived into polymer clay to make cute lil baby dragons .. just learning, be gentle :) But my goodness! I have been trying to figure out this eye thing for months! I've actually been buying other artists printed eyes .. it's driving me crazy cuz like you said if you print them off and another artist prints the same one off, aw man. I too have tried the fish tank glass cuz that's what I had .. ironically, I ordered some clear glass cabochons, had no idea how I was gonna make eyes and then, stumbled on your tutorial .. duh! who would'a thought! Nail Polish!! I have millions of bottles of nail polish! OOhmigosh! I'm sO damn excited that I found you!! I can't thank you enough for sharing this! Thank you thank you thank you!! I'm'a dingdOng! Honestly I know NOTHING about the medium! (polymer clay) You have sOO saved me like a million dollars and gave me back my own creativity with these dang eyes! I lOve you ~haha Ooh and the glass frame with the graphing paper underneath to use for polymer clay! I swear sometimes my brain just goes blank and seriously I just dived into this medium and ya know I'm very dyslexic and learning anything (following directions) can be very challenging, your a very good teacher, you explained everything in a way I completely understood not just watching you but the words you used .. I really appreciate people who can actually teach, you have no idea how frustrating learning can be for me .. Amber, I am so glad you found my tutorial! I am VERY dyslexic and learn best with a repetitive exposure to visual, audible, and tactile mediums. It goes without saying I had a hard time in public school, lol! The best advice I can give is to be patient with yourself and to keep trying as long as it brings you joy; frustration is natural, but totally worth pushing through. Perfect! cuz I'm really struggling with a section on my polymer clay dragons that I can't seem to figure out the best way to 'attach' it .. I think that's the right word .. usually it just happens after countless hours and a bunch of luck .. I'm getting better tho .. I'm just now loving you on youtube.. seeing your dragon eye earrings first. Have you tried temporarily putting eyes on double faced tape to a small
board, or work bench top while painting. That way you can maneuver your eyes without fingers in the way....love your work. I'm celebrating 20+ years of wire wrapping and sculpting.
I saw this video when I was a kid and this video stuck with me enough that when I came across a need to make dragon eyes a couple days ago I was able to remember enough of this video and made some really good looking eyes!!!! Incredible video and thank you for helping me achieve a childhood dream!

Hi Yvonne. Love this video!! Spent many years in costume and sculpture - you are wonderfully methodical and natural teacher - well done. So glad you shared where you find your calibrated cabuchons. Please share where you purchase your tools- i need some more!!
The calibrated cabuchons been one of the biggest bug bears for me over the years , so I resorted to creating silicone molds and casting clear glass resin cabuchons, the beauty of that was i could tint transparently using pure pigment powders and tolulene as a suspension agent. For clear nail polish OR the Clear Casting resin (cold set in 6 mins) I would add Merck eyeshadow powders, (being safe to handle) and most have already mixed in colour changing pearlescent pigment ie Yellow over Green or Red over Blue etc - so when you turn the eye - the colour changes. = fantastical. Finally another thing you should try is going to car spray painting suppliers and getting some glitter/pearl powders as are extremely fine and look stunning mixed in clear polish, magic or the resin.

Finally finished an eye. Found that nail polish remover is my friend. I had a nice big glass dome. Now I am going to do some different colors. I got some polish at the dollar tree. I would post it on Facebook but I deactivated it last year. Just too much drama. I think I'll somehow make this a paper weight for my daughter. She likes sci-fi and fantasy and they have a small apt and it won't take up too much space.

Very breath-taking! I love this technique and the way you explained it as you went. I work with polymer clay a lot, and I spend an hour one day trying to shop for realistic doll eyes only to find them too expensive and not what I wanted. Even though I'm looking for more of a human eye, I got so many ideas and so much inspiration from your video. This is amazing work!

Yvonne, I think your video was wonderful! As an artist myself, I was delighted by the amount of detail you explained and how easy it was to follow your technique. I'm not personally into making dragon eyes, but your technique mimics making ANY kind of eye because it looks so realistic. Even though I never thought I'd make a dragon eye, I must admit that I'd love to make one now because your video was so motivating! It would make a very cool piece of jewelry. What I find only slightly less amazing than these dragon eyes, is that you share your secrets on how to make them!! I've seen others, your are hands down - the best!
I am not an artist but I want to make something “cool” for my grandson. Your directions are so good I am going to give it a try.
As an idea to give it even more zing as part of a costume, you could add a thick layer of clear acrylic to the back (before adding the final layer of black and protectant) and while the clear is still wet, add in 1 or more model LED lights (like for model trains or something) to give it that same effect as when the light was shining through the back. Just imagine what it would look like when you had it turned on in a dark room!

I can only do that if I have a Facebook page myself and I will avoid that until I really must have one. Facebook is a great time eater and at the moment my time is very full. Still, I will find a way to share the images if I find something to make. At the moment it's unlikely I'll have time for making anything but furniture until September or thereabouts.

I started off drawing, painting and also creative writing, I love your style of teaching and instructing and have decided to expend my interests into working with other mediums which now include jewelry making, resin and clay. You are effortlessly talented and the reason you're so good at what you do is because it's something that you absolutely love to do. I hope to one day be remotely as good as you are, but lets face it...not everyone is born with this much talent but thank you for making us feel like we are. Stunning affect from the nail polish that would look fantastic on a polymer clay book cover the one I made was with liquid polymer clay and I love how it's turned out. I used it for Dads teabags for when we go out as he has his preferred tea that he likes to drink and most places only have the fancy pancy teas 😹😹 it's a shame I am not able to post a picture here for you to see, but the eye gave me the inspiration for the cover of the tin 🙃🙃🙃

Yvonne... Your video is a blessing to watch and easier to understand than most I've seen on the subject. I actually had to pause the video to go out to buy a stash of nail polish to be prepared to begin an eyeball of my own. Any video that has the ability to send me running for supplies before I even complete watching it is one that not only teaches quite well. but inspires creativity and instills passion...a rare quality missing from so many diy videos out there today. I look forward to seeing lots of your future projects!

That is coolest thing I've ever seen!!! I was searching for wire/bead snowflakes and found your Celtic snowflake. Saw this vid and decided to watch it. My best friend loves cats, so this got my attention. I had no thoughts on actually doing this. But after your fantastic video, I'm going to give it a try. You did such a great job on teaching, I feel I can do it. Eventually get one I can use.

I usually come across arts and crafts stuff that catch my eye, but when i go into the video, i get over whelmed, because i know for a fact, i don't have the skills to produce what they're doing. But with THIS, i honestly feel like this is within my range of skill, and with stuff that i like, but never really have a use for (the nail polish), so THANK YOU for sharing your art here! Thank you so much for this video tutorial, which truely saved my project working on a dragon hand puppet. I was trying out several different methods for the eyes, but none of them fit in my blinking eye mechanism. This one does, because I found a cabochon in exactly the right size. I was so frustrated, but now I'm ready to go on. Your work is amazing and the tutorial is one of the best I ever saw! Again thank you for sharing this ❤

Well, I have to admit, ...... ya had me trapped right around 6 minutes of your video when you hauled out the leather awl and chip carving chisel, YES!, tools I recognize! I hit the start button with the intent of seeing what it was that you were so proud of and, as you progressed into the actual application of the various tones, it was like watching the Northern Lights in a constant progression of color and hue! (If you ever laid out in the North Country late on a crystal clear night mesmerized by the constantly changing hues and intensities of the Aurora, you will understand my feelings.)
This is something that I, a manly man, an outdoorsman who loves to tough it in the outback taking along only the bare essentials of life, would never EVER watch!! It is like a huge gorilla shaped, knuckles dragging on the ground, WWF wrestler sitting at home in the evening watching the cooking channel!! ........ or Bugs Bunny cartoons!!!!
I want to give you a cyber-hug for filling a small hole in my life that I never imagined was even there! I have done all sorts of crafts but more like braiding [making headstalls for horses and other gear and tack], leather work of all sorts [knife sheaths and holsters, pouches, bags, leather grips on walking staffs, etc.], cooking [using cast iron over an open fire for all sorts of cooking an baking needs], and wood carving [oakleaf carving and checkering on gun stocks and pistol and knife scales], but I wish I had the steady hands at 74, that I had a 34, I would love to try this out just for my own satisfaction.
....... And maybe I will. Who's gonna know and who would care anyway. I want to experience the journey of what you have shown me, not necessarily the destination of the finished product.

In the past I have used bamboo skewers to achieve the scraping technique it works well I have found and if the skewer point starts to degrade a bit I just go with it because the nature of bamboo lends itself well being its a bunch of fibers. I can scrape, wipe down and scrape some more and it's disposable after use but since I get the long ones I can sharpen it with a pencil sharpener and use the same one until its a nub! still very economical. I do like the addition of the wood tool though! Thanks Yvonne. Very nice work!
