Yes; In 1994 at the Star Trek Convention here in Fresno, James Doohan was the featured actor. At one point he took questions from the audience, so I asked him which of the TOS episodes was his favorite, His reply was: "The Doomsday Machine. It was the episode where I felt like I actually done something for a change.....It started my reputation as a Miracle Worker..." James Doohan from what I saw was a very friendly, and congenial actor. A fine man who I will always miss. Mike in Fresno, Ca.
Doohan was combat wounded on D-day as a member of the Canadian military. He never brought it up. I found out after he died. Met him briefly at a convention he was big and tall and very humble and nice.
I went to a marathon Star Trek movie watch that happened, rather unfortunately, just after the death of Gene Roddenberry. They dedicated the night and morning performances to him. The showing was at the cinema where my ex husband worked and I got talking to a nurse from Paisley who asked me what I thought of Scotty's accent. I said that at best it was a bit west coast, she said she thought the same. She told me that at a convention she attended she had said so to James Doohan and he laughed because he thought it was a north eastern accent.
My favorite episode. The writing, the acting. William Windam upstaging every scene he was in. I don't know if he knew how good he really was in that role.
Re: At the time don’t think so. In fact, he even said gave half ass effort. But think got enough positive feedback from fans over the years before his death that he realized he had given one of (if not greatest) guest performances on TOS. Agree?
My favorite episode too! Huge unstoppable machine looking like some creature and cool menacing theme music! Suspense and technically brilliant cinematography!
When I think of the episode "Relics" from TNG, then I think of this episode. There is no way Scotty exaggerated his repair times. He truly was a miracle worker with starships. He helped get the impulse drive wired through the warp drive controls. Kept the impulse drive working on the Constellation to the point it had shields, and phasers. On top of all that, he kept the transporter working on the Enterprise. If anything this episode was Soctty's crowning glory.
Agreed with alot of other 'Trekkies'. Almost certainly my fav episode of the original startrek. All good in this- but i think William Windom as Commodore Dekker showed them how acting should be done. Brilliant and moving performance.
There was 'Tomorrow is Yesterday' ..... also worth re-watching. T.O.S. had some cheesy props - but the story writing and plot were usually pretty good.
Ready! Fire! Direct hit. Just bounced off. You mean you're the lunatic that's in control of my ship?! Get my ship of of there! You're talking to a commanding officer, Kirk. Fire! Get my ship outta there! My mother-in-law's approaching! I don't recognize you. Mr. Spock! On my orders as Captain of the Enterprise. Commadore, you're relieved of command. And in the name of mothers-in-law. Vulcans never bluff. No. I don't suppose they do. 'Cause you've never been married. Gentlemen. I suggest you beam me aboard. To kill your mother-in-law? Mr. Scott. Mr. Scott. Try inverse divorcing. Bridge! We got him through! We've saved the husband! Welcome aboard single husband. "Sigh" says Captain ex-husband. And no alimony! Hallelujah! Contact Star-fleet. Tell'em Decker was a prick. Nearly forced to stay married to that slut of his daughter. Finally free. Yessir Captain. Dah. Dah da da daaannhh! Created by Gene Roddenberry...
This is one of the best shows. David Letterman said Hollywood CEOs are pinheads. This is proof. NBC executives didn't understand this show and didn't like it. It pissed them off that the show got very good ratings the first year.
The original had so much camaraderie, drama & humor. Not to mention space babes and fabulous intense music along with 'character theme music. ' That's what it made it so good.
Perhaps my fave episode of all time. I remember being mesmerized by the music and the danger the first time I saw this at the age of 6. And all of that still works for me now.
"The Doomsday Machine" is my favourite episode in all television. William Windom's performance was the most gripping for episodic televi- sion I can recall. Sol Kaplan's score ranks amongst the very best in all categories! William Shatner was his most commanding.
Ever notice how the music adds so much to the plot? It sounds like Jaws when you see the Doomsday Machine. That is funny. And Sulu counting down. How does it tick as he counts? Amazing! Great video! Great episode!
@ Crispy99999. You forgot to mention the great look on William Shatner's face as he says, "Gentlemen I suggest you beam me aboard!" Shatner is an outstanding actor!
Was looking forward to this enhancement; and was not disappointed. Am an old ST fan as was born in 1951. Remember when ST first aired and was very pleased to see an intelligent SF show on TV for a change. Gene, Majel, DeForest, James; I met all of them at least once and in some cases twice, you are missed.
The Particle beam transporter, the character Spock....Two elements which helped make Star Trek something other than just a run-of-the-mill action adventure series.
I was five years old when viewing this episode and I recall pressing into the sofa cushion whilst this scene played out. The music played a great deal in my fear for the Enterprise and Capt. Kirk surviving.
Mr. Kyle's finest moment. Everything about this episode worked, from William Windom ad-libbing for most of his performance as a futuristic Captain Ahab to the stirring musical score--the trumpets, damn!--to the damn windsock in space getting blown to hell. My favorite episode of all time.
Tom Evans Well, above and beyond that. Decker wasn't totally wrong. He was thinking of the greater Federation in trying to pursue the DM. Even if it was foolhardy and coming from desperation/emotion over the loss of his crew. Decker was not just a typical "Crazy brass" of the week. He had some depth.
+OpenMawProductions Most TOS plots had depth, vs. everything that came afterward. That's the thing about TOS, it was too deep for the average audience.
I disagree. Decker had no depth, at least not at that time. He was a basket case. Considering his rank he ought to have been on the brains trust, using his superior rank to insist on piloting a bomb-laden, self-destructing Constellation into the DM. His futile attack on the DM and his pointless, wasteful suicide reveal that he was long past sanity.
Ab-So- freakinly!!!! I've read the charts, listened to the isolated music tracks. Full truth: The Decker music and sacrifice scene ? Only Biblical comparisons apply
This is the sort of episode that took you to some deep thinking. There could be wandering menaces like that around the galaxy; the relics of wars fought between civilizations long vanished. Not a pleasant thought!

"You're bluffing." "Vulcans never bluff." "No, they don't, do they?" This is one of my favorite episodes of the 79 that were the amazing, original and never duplicated original Star Trek. An astounding 200 effects shots were done for this one episode, and the remastered version is absolutely stunning.
Great suspense, acting by the entire cast--particularly William Windom who ad-libbed a lot--and the music was incredible. This score was re-used in subsequent episodes, but here it's incredibly effective. My favorite episode of any televison show--ever.
nice work. i like the shot of doomsday machine making adjustments to keep the constellation in line with its trajectory when Kirk was on self destruct course

I understand they even re-performed the music for these episodes. The music is essential for this, and they did a great job. I love the suspense it adds.
Sometimes I have this terrible nightmare where the Doomsday machine is slowly approaching my bumhole and I can hear that menacing music playing the whole time. It slowly gets closer and closer, just like in this clip.
FINALLY, after missing two times, i got to see this episode this past weekend! It has ALWAYS been my favorite episode of TOS and it is now even more so! Most of the comments posted here already echo how i feel about The Doomsday Machine. I only hope my second favorite TOS episode- The Ultimate Computer- delivers the way this one did once remastered! Classic Trek at.its.finest!!
This was the best star trek the music is excellent and William Windom gives the best ever performance of ANY trek guest star and certainly the best of his career. The episodes knocks anything the trek spin offs come up with for six....
Definitely my favorite episode. Well written, excellent pace, very well acted. There is only one flaw...Nichelle Nichols isn't in it. No offense to Elizabeth Rodgers who did a great job, but having Uhura in is would have made it complete. My father really enjoyed the scene where Decker says, "You may leave the bridge Doctor." A navy vet from World War II who was told by the captain to start shaving, it always bothered him how Dr. McCoy was always on the bridge arguing.
One of my favorite episodes of the ToS series. That Doomsday machine looks even more vicious being enhanced graphically. If that is even possible! I like Kirk panicking as the transporter blows. That would be my luck. Lol. Kirk replies to Spock, "I hope there aren't any more Doomsday Machines. I found one quite sufficient!" Thanks! Take care.
+agibabs It is available. Crescendo Records released a box set, back in the 90's, with all the music from this episode (along with Amok Time...the famous fight music). You might be able to find it, yet.
Yes william Windom was good in this role. He was also good as a villain in an episode of Banacek. He was good on murder she wrote as Seth. He was just a good actor whether as a good guy or villain.
Thoroughly enjoyed it! Seen it like, ten million times in my life, but these clips over a cup of coffee early in the morning is just what I needed to wake up. One of the best TOS episodes, the enhanced effects gives it the sizzle it deserves.
Spock...”Mr Scott. Status of the Transporter”? Scotty .....”Larry fracking Kyle moved the slide thing too fast and now the bloody Transporter is shooting out puffs of smoke!”
at 2:04 I still find it kinda funny everytime he says that line. 15 14 13... gentlemen I suggest you beam me aboard. And yeah, this episode is very tight. One of my favs
Gentlemen beam me aboard. That music was thrilling and dramatic. Getting closer to the planet killer. Beam him aboard as the planet killer explosions. Very scary and exciting. When Mr Spock said welcome Aboard Captain.
Another vote for favorite episode here. Only one thing though… If the hull of the machine was indestructible and the explosion was 97 mega tons, wouldn’t the shell of that thing be zipping across space? The opening was like a nozzle on a jet engine. I’m no physics major but still…….
I loved Kirk's line to Commodore Decker when Decker says "We're going to turn and attack." Kirk says "Not with my ship you don't!"
Every bit as bad ass as anything Clint Eastwood has ever phrased.
"Mr. Spock, relieve Commodore Decker. That's a direct order!"

My favorite episode. The writing, the acting. William Windam upstaging every scene he was in. I don't know if he knew how good he really was in that role.

Ok..... dude
Dude you forgot to mention the music by Sol Kaplan! For me and with everything else you mentioned really made it one of the greatest TOS of all time-
This is my favorite of all the Star Trek episodes, and not just the original series. Great acting, great drama, and Kirk at his commanding best.
When I think of the episode "Relics" from TNG, then I think of this episode. There is no way Scotty exaggerated his repair times. He truly was a miracle worker with starships. Man, when he stepped off the transporter pad and ran straight for the doors... You have to have a lot of faith in the stage hand pulling the Rope
To quote Spaceballs, "The ship is too big! If I walk, the movie will be over!"
If you notice he put his arms up in front of him. He was prepared.
I’ve seen several bloopers where they DIDNT open the doors on time!
I remember watching that scene with my father, and my father saying "He must have needed to go to the bathroom.".
are you saying the Enterprise wasn't a real ship!!
Agreed with alot of other 'Trekkies'. Almost certainly my fav episode of the original startrek.
All good in this- but i think William Windom as Commodore Dekker showed them how acting should be done.
Brilliant and moving performance.
One THE best episodes from the original series, hands down!
By far the best episode. William Windom as Decker was top notch.
The Galileo 7 and Balance of Terror were right up there with the Doomsday Machine
There was 'Tomorrow is Yesterday' ..... also worth re-watching.
T.O.S. had some cheesy props - but the story writing and plot were usually pretty good.
That is same music I play in my head when my mother in law comes over!
EVIL KIRK HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

The Mother in law theme. 😂

Perhaps my fave episode of all time. I remember being mesmerized by the music and the danger the first time I saw this at the age of 6. And all of that still works for me now.
I was at least 7 years old when I first saw this. I, too, was similarly mesmerized. And I didn't really become a Trekker until I was 12.
Even the music for transport is amazing. Absolute genius the musical composer.
"Bridge, we got him through!"
even so, the next line should have been.... HAND ME YOUR AGONIZER!
"Your agonizer, *please*"
I FORGOT about that, lt Kyle was pretty slow there, maybe a few seconds of THE AGONIZER might quicken his step hehe
I get it!
"Gentlemen...beam me aboard..." Pure cool!
The whole damn thing is beyond cool.
Spock was cool in the Captain's seat and after amok time too
Amok was another quality show...they had so many top notch stories
Captain Kirk stayed the course and kept cool but you could tell he was ordering the crew to beam him aboard or else 😆
@@terrimichaels3018 Yeah, or else HE'D BE DEAD! (Kirk, that is)
"The Doomsday Machine" is my favourite episode in all television. William Windom's performance was the most gripping for episodic televi- sion I can recall. Sol Kaplan's score ranks amongst the very best in all categories! William Shatner was his most commanding.
Alongside with 'Balance of Terror', my favourite episode ever !
I rate the Changling with Nomad right up there also. "Captain, your logic was impeccable.. we are in grave danger"
City on the Edge of Forever.
The Mudd episodes.
The Trouble With Tribbles.
So many more...
The Doomsday machine is the greatest Star Trek episode ever. " Jim..you'll be killed. Just like Decker" is one of the most classic lines ever.
Ever notice how the music adds so much to the plot? It sounds like Jaws when you see the Doomsday Machine. That is funny. And Sulu counting down. How does it tick as he counts? Amazing! Great video! Great episode!
Jaws was lifted from Doomsday! 😎
Remember, that then people still lived who remember watching and making movie where music was ONLY thing to convey tension, as movies were silent....
2:00 "Gentlemen, I suggest you beam me aboard..."!! Best line ever, best timing and best delivery EVER!
@ Crispy99999. You forgot to mention the great look on William Shatner's face as he says, "Gentlemen I suggest you beam me aboard!" Shatner is an outstanding actor!
He was warned about the transporter yet acts mad when they cant beam him over lol

That was one of my favorite episodes!
It parallels "Moby Dick"!
The Particle beam transporter, the character Spock....Two elements which helped make Star Trek something other than just a run-of-the-mill action adventure series.
“ gentlemen I suggest you bring me aboard!,,, “ my favourite line and look on his face ... 💪❤️
I was five years old when viewing this episode and I recall pressing into the sofa cushion whilst this scene played out. The music played a great deal in my fear for the Enterprise and Capt. Kirk surviving.
I can remember when I first watched this episode......I was climbing on the edge of my chair.
I was 7 or 8 1968 when it first aired
"It is quite dead." A deeply relieving statement after this episode's events.
Best acting by Mr Kyle. He should have won an oscar for that scene!
Mr. Kyle's finest moment. Everything about this episode worked, from William Windom ad-libbing for most of his performance as a futuristic Captain Ahab to the stirring musical score--the trumpets, damn!--to the damn windsock in space getting blown to hell. My favorite episode of all time.
I have to hand it to the Constellation. As damaged as she was she still managed to deliver the death blow to the planet killer.
Constitution Class ships were like tanks. They could take a licking and keep on ticking, with a good crew manning them.
+Steven Cohen That's why Star Trek is better than Star Wars.. their guns don't miss, and their ships don't blowup with one shot.
The music still gives me the chills 😂
The composer Sol Kaplan was a genius.
actually they are in the "waters above" the firmament.
freemasons have done it again!
"Waters above the Firmament, the final frontier" LMFAO.
So good that Speilburg ripped it off for Jaws.
Ab-So- freakinly!!!! I've read the charts, listened to the isolated music tracks. Full truth: The Decker music and sacrifice scene ? Only Biblical comparisons apply
one of the best episodes ever
People often overlook a powerful performance by Nimoy as Spock.
But then, it was a great episode due to numerous strong performances.
William Windom. A completely underrated actor, at his best!
My favorite episode when I was a kid. I couldn't wait for the re-runs of this
Reruns- before streaming and not having to wait. It made the suspense build much more effectively.
One of the best in Star Trek.
THE best episode in my opinion. CLASSIC!
Steve, only "The City on the Edge of Forever" is, imho, better.
Amazing show. Forty years old and it still rocks.
55 plus now. I had just realized your comment was 14 years old when I "liked" it. Thought I'd comment on it anyway!

This episode, and the one with the Horta, were my favorite TOS episodes!
Why is it that people just do NOT get it..THIS is Star Trek..NOT that crap that's produced nowadays

This is THE best of ALL the Star Trek episodes.
I’ve seen this episode, in whole or in part, countless times, and today I’m happy to say I still got goosebumps watching it again. 🖖🏻
I so LOVE the original Star Trek series. Way better than the garage that is on TV today.
I think John Williams got his inspiration for the Jaws Theme from this music.
Possibly the best episode behind "City on the edge of forever".
No one ever mentions the amazing soundtrack of Star Trek. There is some unsung genius to be recognized.
My favorite TOS episode :-) I just happened across this video exactly 14 years to the day after it was uploaded
🤯
This has always been my favourite episode, great writing and great acting.
One of my favorites, also all the episodes that deal with the Klingons and the Romulens
nice work. i like the shot of doomsday machine making adjustments to keep the constellation in line with its trajectory when Kirk was on self destruct course
If this is what you call enhanced, I’ll be a monkey’s uncle! Live long and prosper 🖖
When I troubleshoot electrical panels at work and think I've fixed the problem, I always say "Try her now Mr. Kyle" before testing.
The doomsday machine was a long lost prototype of a certain planet killer from a galaxy far far away

One of the best star trek episodes ever
It takes a Galaxy Class ship to show the aliens who rules the roost!!! Much honor to the Constellation.
Except that both the Enterprise and Constellation were Constitution-class ships. Enterprise-D was a Galaxy.
Galaxy class was much more likely to have a warp core breach and blow up.
The Enterprise is fine, it just takes KIRK to show whoever's created Doomsday Machine that this isn't their galaxy !
@@hhale And Geordi would whine while Scotty would curse and mumble in Gaelic.
This was such a great episode.
The music was such an important part of TOS. It's nice that SNW is keeping that in mind.
The best episode by far, in my opinion
I agree with the moral of this clip. Bugles are indeed quite delicious.
So are sideways ice cream cones with rainbow sherbet.

It's been much spoken of, but I loved the 360 views we got of the bridge in this episode.
I understand they even re-performed the music for these episodes. The music is essential for this, and they did a great job. I love the suspense it adds.
That last seen of the Constellation going in! It's like, Thank You Constellation for saving billions of lives!
Sometimes I have this terrible nightmare where the Doomsday machine is slowly approaching my bumhole and I can hear that menacing music playing the whole time. It slowly gets closer and closer, just like in this clip.
Decker's performance as outstanding... He really let the fear show when they found him...
Classic Trek at.its.finest!!
i love the show 25 yrs , you made it look awsome thanks.............
It is an excellent episode.
scotty is the shit! transporter pads blowing up and he still managed to beam kirk aboard!
Take care.
The Best Part is the MUSIC!!!!!!!!!!!! Would love to find JUST THE MUSIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
+agibabs That music was later used in "Jaws," slightly modified. I recognized it when I first saw the movie.
+agibabs It is available. Crescendo Records released a box set, back in the 90's, with all the music from this episode (along with Amok Time...the famous fight music). You might be able to find it, yet.
+agibabs The ORIGINAL Jaws theme!
I know I would.
Rachel Reid I Know I would Love To What??????
Yes william Windom was good in this role. He was also good as a villain in an episode of Banacek. He was good on murder she wrote as Seth. He was just a good actor whether as a good guy or villain.
If you want to get technical Jaws totally rip this episode off. It was one big synchronicity moment.
I noticed that back in the sixties. Always wondered if I was the only one.
Thanks for posting! I missed it over the weekend because I was away on vacation. What a great episode!
I still prefer the charm of the original non updated shows. Still love it all and appreciate the work in the updates.
I loved the fill in actress for Uhura in this.
My favorite ST TOS episode.
Another vote for favorite episode here. Only one thing though… If the hull of the machine was indestructible and the explosion was 97 mega tons, wouldn’t the shell of that thing be zipping across space? The opening was like a nozzle on a jet engine. I’m no physics major but still…….
