If Elgar had only written this one work, he would still be among the great composers. The enigmatic theme and its variations encompass the whole of life - its aching beauty, melancholy, joy, vivacity and sadness. Fine recording.
I agree with all the other comments: an absolute magnificent recording my Monteux- unsurpassed in my view! I certainly prefer it over the highly acclaimed 1970 Boult recording (which surprised me- I am a huge fan of Boult in British music). The only recording that for me personally rank alongside this great Monteux recording is the classic 1962 Barbirolli with Philharmonia.
