I'm in love with this creature. I just experienced an emergence and posted it. I watched this video among others while I was caring for the caterpillar that ended up in my care to help me figure things out. This is a very nice video.
Awesome video! I had three on my dill and one moved over to my parsley plant. The following day two were gone and I didn't see any cocoons but the one on the parsley was still there. That night we had a huge storm and since it was right out my door I decided to rescue it and I brought it into the house and placed it in a vented jar with some parsley. Morning came and it was attached to the side of the jar but not knowing what was going on I pulled the poor thing off to put it back in the garden but it barely moved. Couple hours later I checked on it and it had fallen on the ground but was morphing into the cocoon stage so to protect it I put it back in the jar with netting on top to protect it from the ants. Now we shall see what happens. I hope it will do well and I'll check on it frequently. I love the wonders of nature and I'm now sorry I disturbed it. Likely it would have braved the storm without my help!
I like this! Best video I've found of this caterpillar/butterfly. I'll be showing it to my class and bringing in my caterpillar to show them the "live" version! :) Thanks!
I'm waiting for my 2 to do their thing 2 days ago they finished eating all of my parsley I planted.. lol I was going to get them more but noticed they were done.. Thank god those buggers can eat.. holy cow! I had 5 Swallow Tail Caterpillars to start they all chomped for days. Now I need to find out exactly how long they stay in these positions so I can watch them fly off.. And no I don't have a sad existence, I have a nice tattoo with a butterfly connected to it.. ;-)
Identified the larva on my cilantro in my herb garden. Placed it in a container with plenty of parsley, cilantro, and dill. It’s in the pupal stage now, awaiting final metamorphosis🦋
Found the two cocoons. One to the top of a window on first story and one hanging from the second story window ledge. I forget to look up when looking for them. One is in the dark stage and one is in green. Fun to watch them. Thanks for the video again.
Judith Hendrickson If it is the orange snake tongue like thing, it's the osmeterium, a defense organ. Smells pretty foul too. That said i used to raise these, but haven't seen them in a very long time ago, since I moved.
It might be that orange thing they have. I can't remember what it is called, but it looks like a snakes tounge and it comes out when the feel threatened and give off a foul smell.
I have 5 cats in a big plastic pretzel jar. Should I split them up in other jars and put small branchs in the jars for to hang from? I have raised Monarchs but this is my first rodeo with Swallowtails. I found them by accident. Had to bring them into my home or tne lizzards would have got them.

My dill plant is 7 feet tall and I have 20 of these catapilers on it ever year. Such beautiful butterflys
I have a plant called Chinese mandarin orange plant and I keep getting loads of caterpillers on it more than 20
Do the butterflies come visit the plant often as well?

I have raised hundreds of blackswallowtails, I have no idea what that is coming out of the cat when it is first turning! It looks like a giant tonge!
