There are Important tips to know, and follow, before applying Command™ Picture Hanging Strips to ensure they hold up to your needs:
- Wait 7 days after painting before use
- DO NOT apply strips to paper or soft surfaces on frame
- Remove hanging hardware from back of frame
- DO NOT hang over beds or on wallpaper
- DO NOT hang valuable or irreplaceable items
- Use indoors 50˚ - 105˚F

The most common problem I've seen is that the adhesive has a short shelf life.
If you buy a package and apply some of them right away, you'll likely have no problems. If you try to use the remaining ones two years later, you'll find they won't stick at all, even though the ones you installed when the package was new continue to hold just fine. The hook & loop backed ones might perform a bit better, but the plain strips used for plastic hooks are doomed. The peel off backings sometimes fall off of really old unused strips. If they haven't fallen off, you'll likely find that peeling off the backing will release a shower of crumbs that used to be the adhesive. So buy just what you need, and buy from a retailer that does enough volume that you can be reasonably sure the product hasn't been sitting on the shelf for a year.
Cleaning the wall with isopropyl alcohol first can help with adhesion, but in many cases I skip that step because I've had the alcohol will take the sheen off some satin and semigloss interior latex paints.
I agree with you , I recently found some that have been stored away for who knows how long. Tried to stick them and they came right off. So I definitely suggest using them fairly quickly maybe a year tops . Thanks for drop this really appreciate it 🤙
I knew there was something to the age of the strips. I've used command strips forever and never had a problem until I ordered some from Amazon and couldn't get them to stick for anything. I sent them back and will get them from Walmart or Target.
Wish I read this before, I hung up a picture spent $50 on a frame and didn't stick to the frame easily the 3m stickers were 3 or 4 years old. Learned my lesson. Had to order another frame and new command strips
I used the Damage Free Hanging ones, (no hooks) for pictures, and same problem. Once you install the pic and hold it for 30 seconds (I did for a minute) you are supposed to gently lift the picture off (the velcro is supposed to let go) and push the half stuck to the wall down more. No chance, when I tilted the picture, both parts came off the wall and now I have two huge chunks of paint missing. These are garbage, going back to a small nail and hanging the rest of my pics.
I believe bc I have flat paint. I didn't have this issue with semi gloss
I think your are right flat paint doesn’t have a lot of texture to it like if you have a gloss and it also holds a lot of dirt. Like when you rub hands or fingers you see the marks. Good thing to know though thanks for sharing and tuning in 🤙
My apartment walls are plaster covered in a chalky type paint. Will command strips stick to chalky walls?
Where do you get a 16lb command hook? The most my local hardware store has is 4lb hooks…

I’m gonna try cleaning the wall with alcohol
I did step by step and when I went to pull the picture off the wall to let it sit for an hour and they ripped off the paint

I did all that the door mirror fell right off
Do you have old paint or did you just recently paint at your house? Also, did you clean the walls prior to putting these on them and then do you live in a human location? These could be to potential reasons why
My paint came off right with strip
All else fail...use gorilla glue
Or screw the damn thing straight into the wall
