Thank you so much for all the concern and love you've sent our way. The story is more involved, but we are not going anywhere, we love Scalea and all of our friends there.
With the renovations on our property complete, we thought too of renting it during the time we're not there. We opted against it for many of the reasons you've laid out. We may change our minds in the future but for now we're just going to enjoy the place while we're there (we'll be there again in a couple of weeks). Thanks for the video and hope we can meet up in the future.
This is why I don't want to rent my new apartment out. I hope I can afford it without having to rent it out. I'm glad you found a different apartment in Scalea that works better for you.
We found the wear and tear weren't worth it for us to deal with. My dad owned lots of rental properties and I was the maintenance crew, so that kind of work doesn't interest me.
Did you sell both apartments? Sold one and kept the other? It is difficult to tell from the video. We visit Italy each summer but spend most of the time in the north near Milan but we were planning to visit the south next year.
Originally we bought our apartment as a rental, with no intention of living there, but the more time we spent there the more we realized we needed a place to call home and we found out we don't like to be landlords
It seemed like a long time but right after we put it on the market the Ukraine invasion happened and we housed a stream of women and children for a year and a half. After the last ones left we put it back on the market and it took six months from then.
@@OurUnspoiledItaly Glad you could help those women and children in crisis! I know listings in Italy take a long time, so six months doesn't seem too bad.
thank you for your video. we are going to scalea next year again, this time with more understanding of what we want 😊 new concern for us now is the mafia. did you have any experience with that? renting is the business and maybe there are some hidden mafia taxes?
We have not seen or heard of anything like this. We have bought two properties and have helped others buy properties. Our realtor has been 100% trust worthy and looked out for our best interests. This is the type of realtor you want. We are in scalea now so we can arrange a call with irina. We’ll arrange a call through facebook messenger we
So I'm confused, partly because of the comment that made it seem like you were leaving Scalea. But I watched your video and maybe you're not leaving, just selling your extra place... Do tell! I'd personally be disappointed not to have met you. We actually just moved to Scalea in September after planning it for 3+ years. Tell me you're not gone for good❤
We bought a little place in Scalea too and can only visit once a year, for now... we thought about renting it out but I just couldn't get myself to open our place to just anyone. From your title I was thinking you sold your new apartment! Glad to hear you still love and partly live in Scalea. It's such an amazing place.
@@OurUnspoiledItaly Oh happy days! We've seriously been looking forward to meeting you guys. Soooo, now that we got that straight, when will you be in Scalea again?
Youre leaving. ON NO. Have not met you guys yet. BUMMER...Happy new adventures. Hope you will continue your channel after you relocate. Have you seen mine? I am headed to Portugal in December. Gina in Upstate New York USA moving to Italy/Portugal. Why have you not applied for residency? Are you selling your apartment? YEs Scalea was very quiet and nice in winter but not a lot of services. I see that changing in the future but Calabria was too isolated for me. I bought a small apartment in Abruzzo. This way i can get to other areas of Europe. I first bought land with a river in Portugal. I am applying for my residency in Portugal and will travel back and forth to Italy. I have been in the rental/Service industry for over 30 years when I get my residency I will buy a seperate apartment to rent. I no longer wish to share my dwelling with others. That is what I have done for many many years. Although my renters did not stay in my space I bought buildings, Like the one I am selling in NY right now, and I created apartments inside the building where i lived. I am so done with all of that and if one is not a landlord it is a lot of work and even more so when in another country and you are correct you are always working on the property when you come visit. I on the other hand do this for my living and make a profit and expect to have work to do to enjoy this kind of lifestyle. Hugs to you all on your new adventure, whatever that may be...
Thank you, Gina! We still have a chance to meet you one day because we are not leaving Scalea. We just gave up on the renting, and we sold our first place. But we love our new apartment right by the beach. So, no more tourists, we will just enjoy our vacations. One day, we will apply for the residency, but now Vince still has his business... And of course, we watch your channel. It's great! We also love Portugal. ❤️
@@OurUnspoiledItaly Oh so you still have a place. I was a bit confused. Glad to hear it. Yes renting out your place is not for everyone. Yes I will get there eventually. I found it to not be for me as far as single gal who wanted to start a business and the internet in winter was HORRIBLE. Oh well it sure is gorgeous down there....Congrats on your new holiday plans. Gina
I don’t know what in California is so much better than living full time in Italy. The cost of living is a fraction of what it is in California. Unless, it’s because you are not yet retired and are making a small (or large) fortune in California. I don’t like the high prices, rude people, backwards politics, and the worst drivers in the world. To think I actually live in Las Vegas. The only way California is a wonderful place to live is if you are wealthy. Italy has 7% exclusion areas, which means for 10 years you only have to pay 7% income tax on your income. You have to find these areas and often they are not by the beach. After the 10 years, it goes up to the regular amount, which can be as high as 45%. It’s much lower if you don’t make a lot of money. This is one of the reasons why people move out of Italy. The Italian economy has been hurting for years. There are many more retired (elderly) people out there than gainfully employed younger ones. Because of a lack of substantial industries, many younger people opt to move out of Italy for financial reasons. Also, if you own a home in Italy and your parents pass leaving an inheritance home to you, Italy sees that as you being rich for some reason. Often their elderly parents didn’t put any money into upkeep simply because they didn’t have the money and they couldn’t do the work. They sell the property to the Hamlets (towns) for a dollar rather than pay the high taxes on the property. For this reason, many home go abandoned for years. You hear about how you can buy a home in Italy for one Euro. The problem with this is that they are the really trashed homes in bad parts of town. Even if you invested thousands into doing the repairs, because of the areas, you will never be able to get what you put into the place. Please understand that I am not saying to NOT live in Italy or purchase a home. There are homes that have well below California market values that make finding a nice comfortable house in Italy but probably not next to the beach. Also it doesn’t hurt to mention other Countries that are affordable, which offers every nice places close to the beach (within a block away) like Kenitra Morocco. A fantastic place in Italy is Bellagio. It was the inspiration for the casino in Las Vegas. Homes there hold their value, it’s safe, a bit tourist yet still comfortable with more of a home-town friendly feel. The lake is pleasant and so is the weather.
Neither of our apartments was noisy at all, in fact the first one was dead quiet off season. I've never noticed smoking in any apartment or hotel we've been in.
actually the first couple of years were good, made money, but then we realized we didn't want to spend our time there dealing with repairs and stuff, I wanted my time there to be for me

We agree, the thing is when we bought our goal was to have a rental not live there and that's what that apartment was, our new place is our home.
Thanks for sharing your experience. Glad you are not leaving this beautiful city.
So nice of you
Sorry to see ye are leaving, enjoyed watching your videos and learned a lot from them too. Best of luck on your new adventure
Not going anywhere, over seven years our priorities changed and now we have an apartment that is our home, renting is not for us really.
Thank you for sharing your experience. Very helpful.
Glad it was helpful! Thank you!
I think some may be confused and think you are leaving Scalea. Please clarify. Thanks and best
Hopefully its cleared up now, we aren't going anywhere.

Great info! Thank you for your comment!
Apts worry me because of noise and cigarette smoke.
Neither of our apartments was noisy at all, in fact the first one was dead quiet off season. I've never noticed smoking in any apartment or hotel we've been in.
Impossible! California and Europe are not a good match at all.
actually the first couple of years were good, made money, but then we realized we didn't want to spend our time there dealing with repairs and stuff, I wanted my time there to be for me
So... You still have your favourite apartment?
Yes, its a real home, the one we sold was a holiday apartment and we didn't like being landlords
Calabria is not the place to live in Italy . Go north !!!!! Very north!!!
We love the South, but we adore the whole Italy. Every part of this amazing country has SO much to offer.
I’m Neapolitan. I’ve fallen in love with Tuscany & Liguria.
Apts scare me because of noise and cigarette smokers
🏢
Are you leaving ITALY forever?
No way, just not going to be landlords anymore. We love our present apartment
Some of this Does not make sense. MOST OF THIS is common sense..
Thank you for your comment!
