Turning A 10 Frame Deep Into 3 Nucs! Beekeeping 101

  • The climb to 100 continues! But this time, I'm taking stock of all queen cells and splitting them amongst each nucleus so that no queen cell is wasted. It's still a little early for small splits so I'm putting in more frames of bees and brood than I normally would so that they make it through the next cold snap. Spring definitely came early this year so the bees are growing FAST!

Hint about the velcro and hair. When you unzip the veil, fold the velcro flap up into the suit and hold it while removing the veil.

Pine needles and the red sumac buds that are shaped similar to pine cones, dried of course is all I use, burns cool hence cool smoke on live bees and will smolder in the smoker for 1/2 to an hour.

I think you'll find more success (as far as finding queen cells in splits) by making a hopelessly queen-less arrangement 24 hours before you introduce the frames with eggs/milkbrood.
Keep on beein awesome = )

Emily, I only use pine straw in my smoker and if I start with the smoker empty and start the fire with a small amount of straw and puff the smoker getting flames coming out the top then add a little more repeating the puffing to get more flames coming out the top, do this 3 or 4 times then start adding straw rolled up tight then by packing with your hive tool and puffing until the smoker is packed full very tight, it should stay lit, mine does. This builds up a good bed of coals in the bottom and if tightly packed it will burn until out of straw if kept in a vertical position. If you want it to go out lay it on its side. When pine trees shed pine straw I always gather enough to last me a year. I store it in contractor grade plastic bags until I need it. Good luck!

Hi Emily What I use for my smoker is.2in wide cardboard rolled up and put in bottom of smoker then lite cardboard. Start adding pine needles and keep packing the pine needles in till it's packed full. For me it stays lite for hours. Can't wait till the weather gets warmer here in NE WI.Were tired of snow.

Try food grade burlap, a full smoker will last at least 2 hours without having to restart it.

Pine straw is the best I’ve found.. an old bee keeper told me burlap was the best but I don’t have any burlap. Anyway, build your fire up nice and hot in the bottom of your smoker then add whatever material you want to use.

Great vid gal!! I agree burlap..un colored , roll it in light it. Hot end down into the smoker and then a big handful of green grass on top. Keeps the smoke cool. Or a pair of old denim pants.

I have the same issue with my smoker if I don't get it good and hot before I start. If I light it and let the flames come up and out of the smoker first then after a few minutes put material on top of that then it's usually good to go. I now start my smoker before I get suited up so I'm not wasting time on waiting for the smoker to get hot enough to embers. I hope that helps. You are taking on a lot this year, good luck on your adventures!

I hear food grade burlap is great smoker fuel. It burns slowly inside the smoker. The smoke produced is cleaner and less irritating to the lungs. I haven’t tried it yet myself, but plan to buy some soon.

Smoker hack from the world famous Mike Berry: use a MAPP gas torch to light it and also heat an area around 1/3-1/2 way up on the outside to red hot before you start.

Smoker hack: light 2 smokers at once. (The more smokers, the better the odds of one lighting well and lasting) Use a lump of natural lump charcoal, no chemical accelerants or additives, and a crispy pine cone in each. Leave the tops open, and set the smokers bellows side down. Light the pine cones. Go put on your bee suit. When you get back, the coal should be glowing. Add dry pine needles and pack em down. Cool white smoke ! I’ve used this method for hours of smoke. Somebody will likely complain about the charcoal. I don’t care.

70s in April😂 we’ve already hit 94 in north Texas. I dread July and August in Texas. I don’t even run AC in my home or truck. Truck doesn’t work and homes electric bill is too expensive.

I get burlap at a coffe shop its just thier waste. I roll it up into a tube that fits in the smoker and torch the bottom, make sure theres a flame and shove it in. Stays lit pretty well.
As far has the veil...go bald?🤷👩‍🦲😂
