Eric to the customer, when they pick up the van: "I couldn't find what caused the fuse to blow, but after taking it for a test drive, your van needs four new shocks and an alignment."
Tell him you drove in the road debris that ACCUMULATES ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE WHITE LINE. If your customer is lucky the fuse will not blow again and the nails/glass/screws and stuff will not puncture a tire! OR you could say - "I checked everything but the "one little thing" that's blowing that *@^$&-fuse.. When I have a dream and the Good Lord tells me what that one little thing is, I will call you and fix it for no additional charge. 'Til then you owe X-Hrs x 65.50 = ..." alot. ---- This advice is free; carry some spare fuses and a needle-nose. Lease Kia's or trade them in before the bumper to bumper warranty 5yr/60,000 mi.? runs out. Add an extended warranty when you buy it. Add an extended warranty before the factory warranty runs out. Don't buy a Kia. Ha ha - just kidding. Negotiate an extra warranty on fuses when you buy the car. Take fuse problems to trade schools.
As a fellow shop owner I can certainly say there's a wisdom in knowing when to pull the plug on a repair....and a lot of self control involved in following through. Being "upside down" on a repair financially doesn't help, but that is a problem that isn't going to correct itself either way. Cheers!
That "ramblin'" at the end was not ramblin. you laid out the methodology of what if and what to do next. You're a helluva troubleshooting technician! If only we had someone like like you in my neck of the woods! Thanks for a very informative video Mr. O.!
Eric, very good descriptions of what you tired and found. Even though you did not find the cause, your description and comments after all your diagnosis is very helpful and much appreciated. As I do most of my own repairs myself for the last 50+ years, all your videos and comments are really appreciated and may be helpful in the future. Keep up the videos.
Yep I'd have done the same thing. No sense wasting $$ in labor or guessing at parts but I agree with the fuse thermal cycle failure. I've never experienced it & every fuse that I've found blown will sooner or later pop again and once it happens again it's time to investigate further but the ones that happen only once every few months time is making a logical call on diagnostic fees vs parts cost & most logical failure components and what the customer wants to do. I prefer to wait until a hard failure as long as it isn't safety related or will strand the customer. Bottom line is whether the customer agrees to the repair or not and they sign the RO. Enjoyed the video and I'm recovering from my stem cell transplant and am starting to work on cars again. Just fixed an 06 Jeep 4.0L that wouldn't start in cold weather hit or engine temp went below 100 degrees & would only crank for @2.5 seconds and then starter would disengage. It's been to multiple dealerships and independent repair shops and they threw 3 starters, 2 PCMs, multiple CMP/CKP sensore, CTS, ASD & starter relays and after 5 yrs it left these shops with the customer and Jeep broke. It would eventually start after about 10 minutes of crank no starts and backfiring. I wanted to get my hands on it b/c it sounded interesting & it was a friend who was the Service Mgr at the Goodyear Service Center. His wife was driving his 2019 Challenger and he wanted his wife's Jeep fixed so he could drive his Challenger again. Pico got a workout but was getting ready to borescope cylinders for coolant & fuel while cold in AM & scope secondary with the Pico Mixmaster & shook my head when I seen the plugs (3 carbon tracked and all 6 with >.080" gaps worn to porcelain. Cylinders borescoped good @ secondary scoped fine after sparkplugs replaced & base timing adjusted & it left my shop starting every day in 37 degree weather first time every time.. I gave him a huge break on the bill but he wanted no part of it and gave me more than I would have charged a regular customer. He was so happy to get his Challenger back from his wife and I was satisfied to fix his Jeep and would have done it for free just b/c I hadn't worked on a customer's car in such a long time. Thanks for putting out all the fantastic videos b/c that's what helped energize me when I was in the hospital going thru chemo and the stem cell transplant & am now recovering from AML and soon I'll be back at it thanks to God!!
As the old mechanic once said "You got to know when to fix and when to send to scrap yard." Great demonstration on when to back off a repair and be honest with a customer.

Back in the day when I worked at a dealer, our technical assistance people had a good recommendation. If you have numerous items being powered off one fuse you could find where they branch off the main power feed and install a fuse there. You would be isolating each circuit at that point so if the problem occurred again it would only pop the fuse specific to that circuit power feed. I like your idea of the amp clamp though too, that way you don't have to splice a fuse inline.

Last Tuesday I had lean codes P0171 then P0174 come on in my Chevrolet LS1 V8 powered Holden VY SS Commodore & I thought that it was nothing other than it being a hot 45°C summer day over here in Australia where some cars were even overheating. The check engine thing come on after I pulled out of the car park,I retrieved the codes then cleared them,I also noticed that the fuel trim readings on the left bank was 25% & 23% on the right bank. I drove it to town last Friday & the check engine thing came on again after turning right off a round about, down the road it started chugging a bit so I pulled into the local BP service station & checked the MAF tube worm clamps to see if they're tight, they were a bit loose on a 35-37°C day. The heat softened the plastic & caused the clamps to come loose, after I went to the supermarket I went home & plugged my scan tool in & retrieved misfire codes for cylinders 4 & 6 (P0354 & P0356). I believe it was caused by the air leak so it was a lean misfire, the fuel trims went down to 14.8% on both banks & I drove car in last Saturday to do my main shopping, that was on a 46°C day & the check engine thing never came back on, the fuel trim remained at 14.8% on both sides ! Edit 6.1.20 - This confused me but the misfire codes came back today ,it was due to a lousy connector which was half off,the blue retaining tab that GM fit onto the connector wore down & slipped out so I just fitted a cable tie onto it so it won't happen again in the future !

The UART chip exists because the main CPU is not free to read data synchronously (immediately) at all times, since it might be busy executing other instructions. The UART has it's own separate memory called a buffer that holds data until the CPU is ready to asynchronously transfer that information into its own memory for processing or storage. If the UART buffer fills up before the CPU can empty it out, that is called a "buffer overflow". If the UART reports to the CPU that it had a buffer overflow, that lets that CPU know some data has been lost. They were pretty common back in the modem days, every computer had one attached to its "serial port".

If that little amount of driving on a little more then gravel where I live killed any of those parts they probably wasn’t going to make it anyways. Just my 2 cents those parts at that rate have the coffin already build it’s a few short nail from finished.

You can be the "hey!!! it's that guy" guy
@@rich7304 beat me to it haha
@@SouthMainAuto I have a car that would go to you in a hot New York second ifn I didn't live in the Peoples Republik of Kalifornia.

I really wanted to like Kia, but.... You are a lucky husband Mr. O!
As soon as I find speaker wire, the price goes up!
Dude, Mrs. O is a very special gal! That look she gives you when on camera tells me you really hang the moon for that girl!! Been there on the issue you're having, too. There is nothing you can do further. You checked everything in the time allowed. As always, great job!
About time you took care of the chef. Nice remodel !
Eric: beeps horn as he backs car out of the bay.
All of UA-cam: Hey! It's that guy!
Not sure why diagnosis videos are so interesting, but have to admit I love them.
Proper procedure to watch a SMA video:
Immediately after video starts, press pause,
Tap like,
Press play,
Carry on.
True story BAmaraifan, true story!!!......Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaahhahaahahaha
Bonus points if there's an ad, let the ad play, click like, resume watching ad or skip it if you can, then... HEEEY THERE VIEWERS AND WELCOME BACK to the South Main Auto Channel!
@@adventureoflinkmk2 Add helps them get paid. I never see ads though. UA-cam premium. I'm sure if I watch the video they still get paid just UA-cam didn't have to sell a ad.
@Ultra CNC huh? I was always told it goes by watch time anymore.. there was a time where it went by views, but when people realized that they'd make stupid screamers and make it clickbait then it gets a ridiculous amount of views to give em money. Google caught on and they made it more watch time based
Bamarailfan I should. I usually watch ,read the comments, and forget to go back up to the top to like.
Its always good to see you take the logical approach to things. And 1 of the most frustrating things in life is when your vehicle will not misbehave when it's with the mechanic. Lol I am choosing my words carefully to stay pg but mechanics are like the grandparents of cars/trucks they always get good behavior.
I do a lot of repair’s on appliances and cars etc, about anything electrical. I can’t tell you how many times that I get there and it won’t act up runs fine. I tell them that they shouldn’t have told them I was coming. 😝lol
I've watched enough SMA videos at this point I think I could find my way to that baseball park without looking at a map or ever having been there.
This was my dream, i am a car electrician but never had a chance or maybe God never wanted for me to have a house and a garage! God bless you, hope one day i will be blessd with a garage this big and a house. Have a good day
I love the SMA food channel.
The SMA Food Channel will give Eric some competition.
I would watch it
As an Amateur do it yourselfer it is nice to know that the pros sometimes get stumped too. Keep up the great work and kudos to Mrs. O as well.
In my experience 'best cry" or as you call it "best try" usually taps ino something they shouldnt. Could it be the remote start popping the fuse when cycled? In my experience with those aftermarket installers they tap into something, car has an issue afterwards, when asked about issue they always say no we wouldnt go near that system only for you to take the car apart and find their handiwork all over it
After seeing the rat's nest of wires, I made a mental note never to buy a used car with an aftermarket remote start.
Bingo!
@@waynetang1763 They aren't all installed shit, but I would never either regardless. unless they have paperwork for lifetime transferable warranty
after market remote lock/start caused me so many intermintent problems. Even after it was removed. took me years to finaly track down the risistor they had solderd in under my steering colomn.
Love the follow along as well as the scenic drive while testing the ABS system, the Cal stops great. It's all great info. Keep them coming.
Even if the problem wasn't fixed I still learned something... I never knew cars had yaw sensors. I thought that was only for boats and aircraft.
They do... that's how the ABS and/or ESC and/or TC work...
@@adventureoflinkmk2 It makes sense, I guess I just never really thought about it
@@fillg It allows the ABS module to "feel" what the car is actually doing so it can prevent a skid and or rollover!
Your 'rambilin' had a lifetime on info in it. Hopefully the newcomers take it to heart
Hey Eric I have a hunch that sweet aftermarket best buy remote start is somehow to blame on this one.
I'd have to agree, especially with the inappropriate use of speaker wire. That's not a speaker that was a remote starter!
I’d have to agree.
I also have that nagging suspicion, but it would be good to know how long ago it was done.
There was somebody crushed to death recently caused by a badly fitted aftermarket remote start.
Typical mechanic assumption 😆
Its a k k k kia. No greenies growing in the fuse box. Good seeing you and the Mrs. again here in 2020.
Man this looks fun. I'm an electronics engineer who fumbles badly with a wrench but I like to pretend. If you see me with a torch run the other direction.
A scope on the other hand I can bumble my way through if I could ever get the schematics.
I'm amazed at how many different vehicles you can just jump into.
I admire your courage for even laying a hand on that particular vehicle.... The VQ (sold as the Grand Carnival here in Australia).... I do not miss working on that thing one little bit!

Can’t trust my husky to be alone with plates like that. He’s hard headed and will make that bad decision every single time 😂
Mine has stolen whole pizzas off of the stove fresh from the oven and never made a sound, or left a mark or crumb.
Oh yeah, he's 75 lbs too.
My Afghan has stolen steaks off the grill.
My brother fries a pound of bacon and puts it at the back of the counter on a plate. He turns around and scrambles a dozen eggs. Puts eggs on a plate turns to get the bacon and its gone. His Basset Hound is all innocent. Heck the hound is so short there is no way he could have snarfed that bacon.
My husky has stolen whole Steaks off the stove and sandwiches etc. Hasn't done it in awhile though.
I'm still waiting to see the first in the series of "The SMA car mysteries" books.
Hi Mr,E.O.and family hope you are all safe and well.i haven't seen your videos for along time working in Singapore. Back home now before the flight stopped. To Scotland. So I'm just catching up on all my subscriptions. But it's great to see you guys again keep up the good work.
UART: Universal Asynchronous Receiver Transmitter.
Or when working in IT, and dealing with users, it's a User Attitude Readjustment Tool.....aka a hammer to the fingers.

I love watching SMA videos! Been watching for a year now, even the Wife watches them. Would like to see more videos on 2nd gen Toyota Tundras! I have a 2013 and watched you do brakes. Very Helpful.
Protip to save old weary backs is to get one of those 6-8 inch hand/shaving mirrors from the dollar store to look under the dash. I got tired of crawling around between the floor, seat, and steering wheel and you'd be surprised what you can learn to do backwards looking through a mirror.
What’s better than bacon? Your relationship, it’s so lovely

If that little amount of driving on a little more then gravel where I live killed any of those parts they probably wasn’t going to make it anyways. Just my 2 cents those parts at that rate have the coffin already build it’s a few short nail from finished.
I like that Mr. O understands fuse's blow for a reason and you have to find that reason. Now sometimes very very rarely the fuse was just old or defective from the factory.
