- In this video I have a look at a 2009 Kia Sedona that was brought in with a P0501. It didn't take long to find out that the ABS module was not communicating. Simple enough... bad fuse right. Why did the fuse blow? Great question. -Enjoy!
Who else smiled when Eric says “hot like my wife” Mrs. O says “hot like my husband” you never know what either is going to say!! Great video as usual
I got more interested in the tete a tete exchange than the KIA now.
Definitely laughed haha
I nominate Mrs O for wife of the year!
Such an awesome couple! If their on-camera fun is anything to go by, they must be a blast to be around. :)

Eric to the customer, when they pick up the van:
"I couldn't find what caused the fuse to blow, but after taking it for a test drive, your van needs four new shocks and an alignment."
🤣 oh god, thats good !
add a Good tire balance too.

Tell him you drove in the road debris that ACCUMULATES ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE WHITE LINE. If your customer is lucky the fuse will not blow again and the nails/glass/screws and stuff will not puncture a tire! OR you could say - "I checked everything but the "one little thing" that's blowing that *@^$&-fuse.. When I have a dream and the Good Lord tells me what that one little thing is, I will call you and fix it for no additional charge. 'Til then you owe X-Hrs x 65.50 = ..." alot. ---- This advice is free; carry some spare fuses and a needle-nose. Lease Kia's or trade them in before the bumper to bumper warranty 5yr/60,000 mi.? runs out. Add an extended warranty when you buy it. Add an extended warranty before the factory warranty runs out. Don't buy a Kia. Ha ha - just kidding. Negotiate an extra warranty on fuses when you buy the car. Take fuse problems to trade schools.
It finally hit me about one of the appeals of the channel: It's like watching reruns of the Andy Griffith Show. And I mean that in a good way. People caring about people.
TheObersalzburg did ya see the episode where he gave away a car?? I’m not crying, you’re crying!! He’s one a helluva Man!!! I can guarantee you this, if I lived with in 2 hrs of him I’d be sending him work, I do some side work, but nothing bigger than a brake job usually. I work in a fleet shop with 77 trucks. There’s a shop that’s about 2 hrs from here where I live and the folks are as nice and trustworthy as Eric!!! I’ve sent several people there. It’s in Hattiesburg Ms. they do over flow work for our shops sometimes.
Andy Griffith show is fake. SMA is real.
Put the car in the court house
You have the sweetest and most charismatic wife ever, Mr. Eric O.
As a fellow shop owner I can certainly say there's a wisdom in knowing when to pull the plug on a repair....and a lot of self control involved in following through. Being "upside down" on a repair financially doesn't help, but that is a problem that isn't going to correct itself either way. Cheers!
I don't want to miss the sequel where Eric has been thinking about it for a couple of days (because those things stick with you) and remembers something else that he could have looked at❗
The fuse was probably blown during the installation of the remote start and the guy is just now having it checked

Nothing is more difficult to diagnose than an intermittent failure.
True for EVERYTHING.
And when you finally find that bare/loose/broken wire after three hours poking and testing and you tell the customer what the problem was and he looks at you with that look: "You charge me three hours to fix a loose wire?"
@@MrGoogelaar You just described perfectly why I quit trying to work as a mechanic a long time ago.
@@MrMccurley Or blaming you for things you didn't even touch. I got blamed for an expansion tank after doing spark plugs. He later admitted a previous shop said the hose connector was loose but probably ok.
That is why most professional mechanics are going bald. They have ripped their hair out try to track down intermittent faults.
Yep I'd have done the same thing. No sense wasting $$ in labor or guessing at parts but I agree with the fuse thermal cycle failure. I've never experienced it & every fuse that I've found blown will sooner or later pop again and once it happens again it's time to investigate further but the ones that happen only once every few months time is making a logical call on diagnostic fees vs parts cost & most logical failure components and what the customer wants to do. I prefer to wait until a hard failure as long as it isn't safety related or will strand the customer. Bottom line is whether the customer agrees to the repair or not and they sign the RO. Enjoyed the video and I'm recovering from my stem cell transplant and am starting to work on cars again. Just fixed an 06 Jeep 4.0L that wouldn't start in cold weather hit or engine temp went below 100 degrees & would only crank for @2.5 seconds and then starter would disengage. It's been to multiple dealerships and independent repair shops and they threw 3 starters, 2 PCMs, multiple CMP/CKP sensore, CTS, ASD & starter relays and after 5 yrs it left these shops with the customer and Jeep broke. It would eventually start after about 10 minutes of crank no starts and backfiring. I wanted to get my hands on it b/c it sounded interesting & it was a friend who was the Service Mgr at the Goodyear Service Center. His wife was driving his 2019 Challenger and he wanted his wife's Jeep fixed so he could drive his Challenger again. Pico got a workout but was getting ready to borescope cylinders for coolant & fuel while cold in AM & scope secondary with the Pico Mixmaster & shook my head when I seen the plugs (3 carbon tracked and all 6 with >.080" gaps worn to porcelain. Cylinders borescoped good @ secondary scoped fine after sparkplugs replaced & base timing adjusted & it left my shop starting every day in 37 degree weather first time every time.. I gave him a huge break on the bill but he wanted no part of it and gave me more than I would have charged a regular customer. He was so happy to get his Challenger back from his wife and I was satisfied to fix his Jeep and would have done it for free just b/c I hadn't worked on a customer's car in such a long time. Thanks for putting out all the fantastic videos b/c that's what helped energize me when I was in the hospital going thru chemo and the stem cell transplant & am now recovering from AML and soon I'll be back at it thanks to God!!
Great video! I love how you always pick the least invasive option. E.g. narrow down problem area with diagrams then amp clamps, breakers and test lights e.t.c.
As opposed to tearing the entire front end of the car to shreds, detonating a small tactical nuclear device above car, ripping awful aftermarket birds nest out... or putting paperclip in place of fuse and watching it burn! nah, jk.
Back away slowly. LOL Some times it's the best thing for everyone.

It's good to find decent families online. Yall have been truly blessed.
Install lower amperage fuses in-line with each component after they branch off. It's a pain in the ass, but it's the best way to isolate the offending circuit leg.
That "ramblin'" at the end was not ramblin. you laid out the methodology of what if and what to do next. You're a helluva troubleshooting technician! If only we had someone like like you in my neck of the woods! Thanks for a very informative video Mr. O.!
Best things about this SMA episode were all of the Mrs.O sightings !! Nice hair styling by the way !! Happy New Year to all. : )
I enjoy the way you drove that kia through every hard bump you can find
Back in the day when I worked at a dealer, our technical assistance people had a good recommendation. If you have numerous items being powered off one fuse you could find where they branch off the main power feed and install a fuse there. You would be isolating each circuit at that point so if the problem occurred again it would only pop the fuse specific to that circuit power feed. I like your idea of the amp clamp though too, that way you don't have to splice a fuse inline.
As soon as I find speaker wire, the price goes up!
I did a battle with a dodge stratus several times and. Never found the problem. The lady told me the dealer did not find any problems. She ended up trading it. I pretty much avoid electrical gremlins. I am not set with scan tools or knowledge. Great job trying!

I've watched enough SMA videos at this point I think I could find my way to that baseball park without looking at a map or ever having been there.
Last Tuesday I had lean codes P0171 then P0174 come on in my Chevrolet LS1 V8 powered Holden VY SS Commodore & I thought that it was nothing other than it being a hot 45°C summer day over here in Australia where some cars were even overheating.
The check engine thing come on after I pulled out of the car park,I retrieved the codes then cleared them,I also noticed that the fuel trim readings on the left bank was 25% & 23% on the right bank.
I drove it to town last Friday & the check engine thing came on again after turning right off a round about, down the road it started chugging a bit so I pulled into the local BP service station & checked the MAF tube worm clamps to see if they're tight, they were a bit loose on a 35-37°C day.
The heat softened the plastic & caused the clamps to come loose, after I went to the supermarket I went home & plugged my scan tool in & retrieved misfire codes for cylinders 4 & 6 (P0354 & P0356).
I believe it was caused by the air leak so it was a lean misfire, the fuel trims went down to 14.8% on both banks & I drove car in last Saturday to do my main shopping, that was on a 46°C day & the check engine thing never came back on, the fuel trim remained at 14.8% on both sides !
Edit 6.1.20 - This confused me but the misfire codes came back today ,it was due to a lousy connector which was half off,the blue retaining tab that GM fit onto the connector wore down & slipped out so I just fitted a cable tie onto it so it won't happen again in the future !

This is what "progress" has brought us. Cars which are really complex bundles of computers and sensors with 4 wheels. Even a highly skilled mechanic like Eric, can sometimes be stymied by diagnostic and repair challenges.
In my view, we need to roll back the clock to a time when cars and trucks were simpler, easier to diagnose and repair, less expensive to fix, and in many cases, more reliable.
We have had "progress" foisted on us, and it does not serve us well.

I have to admit this guy has a lot of common sense. Putting two leads to one fuse then another is really smart thinking. If all else fails I would run new wiring to all four and by pass existing wiring.
In my experience 'best cry" or as you call it "best try" usually taps ino something they shouldnt. Could it be the remote start popping the fuse when cycled? In my experience with those aftermarket installers they tap into something, car has an issue afterwards, when asked about issue they always say no we wouldnt go near that system only for you to take the car apart and find their handiwork all over it

Man this looks fun. I'm an electronics engineer who fumbles badly with a wrench but I like to pretend. If you see me with a torch run the other direction.
A scope on the other hand I can bumble my way through if I could ever get the schematics.
I'm amazed at how many different vehicles you can just jump into.
Electrical shorts that only pop a fuse rarely can be one of the most difficult things there is to track down on a vehicle.
I once had a customer who drove a Saab that the engine would just shut off while driving down the road for some unknown reason. Never blew a fuse. After it shut off, he would simply pull over and let it set for 20 minutes or more it would start right back up and run perfectly and might not do it again for several weeks. I had looked and looked for the problem to no avail, but it would never do it while I had it at the shop. So I told him the next time it shut off and put him on the side of the road to call me right then and I would come with my meter and test light and try and find the problem. I got a call late one rainey night and he said he was on the side of the road and it would not start. I went and I found the problem, it was the fuse panel overheating and where two of the bus bars were riveted together. When the rivet got hot enough from the bad connection, it would kill the power to some of the main fuses and was losing power to the coil. I drilled the bad rivet out, put in a new one and soldered the bars together and he never had a problem again. True story!
I’d say you can fix em all, it’s just a matter of how much money, time, pain, and suffering you’re willing to go through

Odds are it has something to do with `Best Try's rem,ote starter install. Wonder if they shorted out two wires when they were cutting open wiring harnesses. I watched but didn't notice if you tried using the remote starter and then see if that fuse was burnt out again. My gut feeling - it has something to do with that remote starter and their install... yeah, which could take forever to find.
Dang Rick. i was just about to suggest that. I wonder how much draw is caused by the speaker wire.
Yeah I wonder if the light came on right after the install. They could have manually shorted it in a way that only those master mechanics know how.

I was a fleet mechanic for 35 years. The intermittent problems were the worst to troubleshoot. I remember working on a line truck where the the second boom extension would retract while spinning the hole auger. Altec tech support told me that I had a high back pressure problem. Nope. I kept testing the hydraulic circuits. Everything was normal. For shits and giggles, I removed the second boom stage counter balance valves. There it was. The Teflon seal to block bore was toast. It was rewarding to fix the problem and prove tech support was wrong.
There was a Caterpiller 235 Tracked excavator that was the first one to leave the factory▬factory was out and could not get what is was; Each start a manual-fuel pump was pumped;
