I just wanted to tell you that 15 years back, I stumbled onto your Effortless Mastery meditations and began working with them. At the time, I was still dealing with some serious religious up-bringing hang-ups that scared me away from pursuing it. Critical thinking ultimately cured me of those hang-ups and I've been revisiting your meditations as of late, this time with zero fear and I can feel some positive impact almost immediately. Thank you for what you do.
I knew Kenny when he was teaching at The New School, he is a really awesome person,he was so funny and entertaining, he was one of the only teachers there that I could say I really learned from. His classes were great and I took a few private lessons with him. I think it's safe to say that if you go to different jazz musicians homes,a good number of them will have Effortless Mastery laying around somewhere next to the bong and the real book.
Not certain how I never heard any of this before this week. I’ve now listened to your first book and your new book will be here tomorrow. I’ve played at music all my life. Now, at 79 I’m learning to play piano, I have a teacher who, while she is understanding, won’t let me move on until I’ve mastered my current lesson, and now, having heard your book, I understand the value of that. I’ve always found value in what we called mind over matter back in the 60’s and 70’s, and found truth in your ideas of getting out of your own way and allowing yourself to be. I’ve already started to practice differently, and now just set aside a little time to play and try not to care about how it sounds. It’s hard, but I’ve really just started….. Thank you for this, I’ll keep trying to dump my Ego trip and let my mind just observe.
Thank you Kenny. I read your self mastery book years ago, it was a great relief to discover my truth thru what you wrote, & to go on to discover what I didn't know for all of my life, which was that I had a hidden anxiety disorder. I enjoy music from a different "mental place" now. I let those fantasy/comparison/negativity habits go, & made peace with the knowledge that I won't be a "Jazz Great" or anything like it in this life, & that's OK. Thank you again for your help in my journey to a saner perspective on music & life.
Wow this is great. Effortless Mastery changed my life when I was at Berklee. I was at Berklee when it came out and *everyone* was reading it. I'm sure it changed more than just my life. 🙏
One of the greatest musical/life lessons I’ve ever heard! This man literally gives you one of the greatest keys to life in 18 mins! Remarkable! Thank you 🙏🏼
I cannot wait to get the book, it should be here any day now. This is the book I have been looking for my whole life. I do not regret the time past, I will enjoy the future with better piano playing and living. Thank you Jazz Memes for bringing us Kenny.
Wow, you're a great musical philosopher and guru. Your relaxed and natural way of sharing your life's lessons are just unique and incredible. As an Afro-jazz accordionist (self-taught, because we didn't have music teachers in my town), I love your philosophy. Thank you guru Kenney. You've handed me keys (pun intended) to become more creative and explorative with and in my music. Kai Gangans.
Many sports stars fantasize about being actors. Many actors fantasize about being singers and musicians. Kenny is a great musician who fantasizes about being a philosopher.
So who's playing? God, Jesus,,,, Charlie Parker? In Christian circles the most important question in life, about ANY subject is "By What Standard?" or put in a playground setting, "Says Who?" An analysis of this subject comes quickly to the point, Why am I here? and what is my basis for what I do? Kenny answered that by asking who is playing.
kenny ,,it would be great if you told everyone about the ENDLESS REPETITIVE WORK FOR HOURS AND DECADES THAT NEEDS TO BE DONE TO ATTAIN YOUR EFFORTLESS MASTERY ?there is no such thing as EFFORTLESS MASTERY !!mastery comes after a TREMENDOUS EFFORT !! and by the way NOT EVERY NOTE YOU PLAY IS THE GREATEST NOTE YOU EVER HEARD !! another lie is that you shouldnt judge yourself RIDICULOUS !! LEARNI9NG AN INSTRUMENT INVOLVES MILLIONS OF MIN UTE TO MINUTE JUDGEMENTS WHILE YOU ARE CAREFULLY ANALYZING YOUR PLAYING WHILE PRACTICING ,, SORRY BRO ,,,,i dont agree ,,respectfully
Yes ,it is putting the horse before the cart,Kenny's addressing our tendencies to the beating and cajoling of the horse .Both truths are needed and perhaps he should articulate the other one for some needed balance :)

I love this. Kenny gets how our deepest fears of failure keep us from living in the moment and feeling satisfied with ourselves.
Well put! 🤘

You're a piano composer -- amateur or professional is only about getting paid. You're already what you want to be.
