There's actually an Ibanez guitar without a Floyd or Edge, the Andy Timmons signature models have a Wilkinson tremolo, similar with the ones on the MusicMan's or PRS's.I've seen Andy doing some cool stuff with the tremolo life & the guitar stays in tune pretty fine.
DevinThe242 I love porn as much as the next guy but the ads for Brazzers on the side screen seemed kind of... extreme. If I saw a girl wearing a shirt like that I would talk to her immediately.
Those look really nice guitars, and of course with them being Ibanez they'll last forever and some. Incredibly reliable, not just pretty looks but a loyal workhorse too.
* In addition to what is said about Floyd Roses and the Edge Pro by Ibanez: It's not just simply set up low but the fine tuners are shaped differently, the retainers are a lot flatter and not very angled like on an original (non low-profile) Floyd Rose -so the Captain does have a point there. I felt they were a lot more comfortable when i played one of them the last time - had an RGD 7320Z for about 1 1/2 years.
The ibanez headstock is the only superstrat headstock which gets it right. Suhr might have super rare woods and unmatched tone but their headstock is fugly.
I have a 1994 Ibanez S470JB MIJ that still has it, it has such smooth sound for a guitar that's older than me, let alone being 21 years old at least. I don't know about those, but if they have any similarity to the golden era S-series then they are going to be amazing.
The 'vinyl record' finish thing is probably from the manufacturing process where the pole pieces are made from long lengths of steel bar. I assume that the round marks are where have been parted off using a lathe, rather than being cut with a saw. The probably wanted a diameter which had a tight tolerance and needed to be ground to size first.
Ibanez is one of the top sources when it comes to well built entry level instruments! The GIO-series has some very nice axes to start playing and for a bit more $$ you can get these nice little babies. Of course Chappers does have some serious contenders in his range of very nice axes!
I am the lucky owner of a Ibanez S520EX BBK, made in Japan, with 2 humbuckers (V1 & V2) and the vintage "Edge" Floyd Rose Tremolo, 22 frets and wizard neck and it's one of my most fav guitars. Yowser!!!!
I bought an Indonesian S470 over 3 years ago as a "stopgap" until I decided which megabucks guitar was going to replace a 90s USA Hamer. Its an incredible guitar for the price. The place I bought it from had it set up beautifully. Nothing goes wrong it with despite incessant noodling. On the other hand I have to play my Fender Tele at least once a week to keep me honest because the S470 is just so easy to play. Still haven't bought the megabucks guitar.
Actually, I helped sell one of those grey ones when I worked at Guitar Center last year. So they might be UK exclusive now, but they were Guitar Center exclusives last year.
I've watched a lot of your reviews and I love the captain's lead choices, been trying to copy your approach, he doesn't do fast flurry solos, but fast is not always the way to go.. salute to the captain!!
Ibanez has a lot of great jazz and blues/rock guitars but I always thought the S series is aimed for metal/modern rock shreddy stuff. Then my teacher brought in his Japanese made S to class and BANG! These guitars are simply great whatever genre you want to play. Simply great guitars. Don't get misled by the skinny neck and the looks.
Ibanez make some pretty versatile guitars, even the RGs and S series guitars are very versatile despite everyone just assuming they're "metal" guitars.
I definitely agree with the gateway drug thing, I got a S570DXQM in blue a few years ago and I absolutely love it. Yes the middle pickup does get in the way and I have effectively worn down one of the sides of the plastic cover and a have created a sloped pole piece just from playing.
for Rob: Ibanez has a similar guitar to this one, the S420, that does NOT include the middle pickup. I also quite hated the ones with the one in the middle getting in my way to do a lot of picking technique, so I went for the the HH setting... it still is a badass guitar, and really looks a LOT like the ones you guys are using
I have a 2015 indonesian made SIR70 and an 2000 Japanese made S520 (not prestige, only in the catalog for a year) The indonesian one needed a minor setup but is a very good value guitar. I've not had anything as cheap that plays as well. It's a very fast playing guitar and the slim body keeps the sound tight at high gain. It's a usable working guitar that is easy to keep in the right place in the mix. The MIJ S520 is a more sophisticated beast. The neck is even slimmer, the fretwork is amazing (although showing some wear these days) and with the right pickups it's quite special. It's HH so the middle pickup issue is gone, and positions 2 and 4 on the 5 way switch turn it into a funk monster. I don't know what it went for new but if modern MIJ guitars are anything like this then they are on par with the best hand made western guitars. That said I had a late 2000s ART80 and my kid had a late 90s GAX60, and his Gio is the better guitar... Lots of quality variation across the ibanez range, you get what you pay for.
Lee is getting so much better at lead. If I ever hope to one day play lead...I hope to be as good as he is as of late. Or maybe I will just be doomed to be a chugger n' strummer...."sigh". Love the vid's guys!
I've got an early 2000's Ibanez superstrat guitar with HSH pickups. Interestingly the neck pickup sounds like a bit of across between a single coil and a humbucker. Also the bridge & single coil pickups combined give it a bit of a steel string acoustic guitar sound. I'd be interested to hear the clean sounds of the guitars in the video. High gain distortion is fun but it isn't everything! Also on my Ibanez, the middle pickup is set quite low. It can't actually be raised as high as the humbuckers. I never hit it with the pick. I suspect the low-profile body of the guitars in this video might prevent the middle pickup being lowered significantly. On the tremolo version there's probably very little wood between the pickup cavities and the whammy springs & spring claw.
Couldn't agree more with the point you brought up about the HSH pickups... Don't actually buy, nor would i buy a HSH guitar for this very reason!!! Loving the vids Rob, only just been getting into your channel.. and having a great bloody time!!!
I think you could easily fix the problem Rob mentioned just by lowering the middle pickup (of course the output will diminish from small to a lot but with single coil you probably do want to get cleaner and lower output sound).
I am pretty sure I have played that blue Ibanez a few weeks ago, when I was in Andertons! I then bought a PRS SE, but it was a nice guitar... I just had recently got rid of my older S420, so I was only playing the new one to test the sounds of a blackstar amp (as I wanted to know that it was the amp I was enjoying, not just PRS).
Ibanez S Series are excellent! Also I went to Andertons the other day and was overwhelmed, lots of guitars and very friendly staff! Shame I didn't see the Capt or Chappers, maybe next time.
I played an Indonesian s7 with the in house bridge and it was amazing. I didn't have the money to snag it but its more or less everything I like about an SG with nothing I hate.
I love these thin style bodies, though not in either of the colours shown. Adam Ironside has a beautiful one in natural wood grain finish (similar to ML1) that looks amazing. I'd love to have that one based on looks alone, though not really a fan of the Ibanez brand. certainly like to give one a try to see how the slim body feels.
Rob I feel like you should make your delay a little shorter on the repeats, it seems like you have it set up to repeat a phrase instead of warming up a line you're currently playing. OBVIOUSLY it is probably your preference but that's just my 2 cents.
These are great guitars (I should know, I played them for 5 years)!! I used them to play classic rock. No distortion, just the volume set to MAX on my Vox. It had a similar sound to a Gibson but the body is thinner and easier to play. I had only just recently playing and recording with a Fender Strat. Mainly because I play more clean and mellow jazz now. But when i want something with just a bit more oomph... I take out the old Ibanez...
Definitely bring back the marks out of ten! Though perhaps it shouldn't be based on every guitar you've played, but on guitars in the same price bracket ie under £500, £500-£1000, £1000-£1500 ect. I think that would make the scores a lot fairer because you're not comparing a £350 Ibanez to a guitar 10 times the price, for example.
I guess having the middle pickup depends on the person who plays it. I put all my three pickups flush against the guitar with the humbuckers slightly higher than the single. Gives more sustain.
I agree with him about the middle pickup. I have an S570MQM and that's really the only gripe I have with it. You have to modify the way you pick a bit to not hit the middle pickup....or buy a version without the middle pickup. I never use it anyway.
Haha, hahhahhh! Rob, I didn't even realize I said it out loud but right after I did you paused and went "hear that...? That's the sound of the internet telling us there are many with a floyd rose trem."
Had an S series during my thrash days. Great body, great neck, but found that the tone wasn't good for anything other than high-gain stuff. It was a dark-sounding guitar--except for the Vai-inspired split humbucker positions, which were actually too tinny--and swapping the pickups didn't really help that enough. Switched to a cheaper PRS SE a few years afterwards and was a lot happier--not as space-agey, but loads more character. And I agree with LikeMike's comment below--the shape of the S series is just tied to a particular genre and maybe even a particular era...
Those guitars sound wicked awesome. Liked the review guys. I have to Ibanez goo rg's one with a pickguard and one without I think there pretty nice too
I have an S521 and it is absolutely beautiful. It's incredibly light but has so much tone, one of the best guitars I have ever played and really good value! You won't regret buying one.
Rob Chapman i have been watching for only 1 month i just want to know y don't u ever make a video about bass guitars being a bassist myself i tried looking up videos on your channel about basses and couldn't find anything. BTW i love your hair. Yall keep up the vids
Because they're guitar players! As a bass player, you should know that playing bass and playing guitar is far from the same. You might know the notes but it's a technique thing switching between the two!
Sam Harding your left hand technique is similar to guitarists but the difference between guitarists and bassists technique wise is the picking hand I believe :)
S671 because of the hardtail bridge, S670 because of the Edge Tremolo system this is how Ibanez comes up with model numbers for guitars: last digit is "0" if the guitar has a whammy bar, "1" for fixed bridge anyway, S Series = sexiest guitars on the planet indeed. thanks for posting
Thing I love about these so much is the location and angle of the input jack. That's such an important thing to me.
There's actually an Ibanez guitar without a Floyd or Edge, the Andy Timmons signature models have a Wilkinson tremolo, similar with the ones on the MusicMan's or PRS's.I've seen Andy doing some cool stuff with the tremolo life & the guitar stays in tune pretty fine.
these suckers in hardtail form are really hard to beat. they're comfortable as all hell and just do everything you want without any complaint.
i love Ibanez guitars you guys need to do more Ibanez reviews
I agree with the Captain, not sure what was happening that day but Rob + that guitar into Victory = WIN!
5:24 did anyone else notice the brazzers logo on the amp
YES first time I watched it!!!
Yeah why the hell was that there? lmao
im sorry, but i have no idea what that is and i never heard of it/seen it before.
Omigosh that's hilarious
Pepper Lmao, yes!
The first guitar I ever bought was in the early mid 90's blue Japanese S series Ibanez with a Floyd and I still own it in 2020.
The one the captain has is a lovely shade of blue, seriously, I love it.
Lee has seriously improved with his lead playing!! Well done lee!
7 years later I decided to order one...Excited to get my hands on it.
What did you think? I'm picking one up Saturday
@@antony9384 couldn't get it,sadly guitar center is backed up I guess had to wait 3 months before knowing when I'm getting it
Ibanez are well built strong good sounding guitars n Rob knows how to make the best of them
Anyone else notice the Brazzers thing at 5:24 ?
They've done it in a few videos.
Oh yeah, now that you mentioned it. Isn't that like a hardcore porno thing? What is that?
Paul L yes, its internet porn. I saw a girl at Warped Tour this year wearing a shirt. I think she's a part of it or something.
DevinThe242 I love porn as much as the next guy but the ads for Brazzers on the side screen seemed kind of... extreme. If I saw a girl wearing a shirt like that I would talk to her immediately.
Paul L I don't think Chappers is sponsored by them, I think they're in there just cause its funny.
Had an s470 for a few years now. Its my little trooper and I'll never get rid of it.
I laughed so hard at the Indonesia bit, hahah. Love that added echo on Rob's laugh :D
I know this comment is 4 years old, but could you explain me the joke lmao.
Love My S series. Is the perfect compliment for my Strat for the heavier songs without needing to have a ridiculous shape.
What kills me is that they still have a warm tone. Mind blown.
Those look really nice guitars, and of course with them being Ibanez they'll last forever and some. Incredibly reliable, not just pretty looks but a loyal workhorse too.
* In addition to what is said about Floyd Roses and the Edge Pro by Ibanez: It's not just simply set up low but the fine tuners are shaped differently, the retainers are a lot flatter and not very angled like on an original (non low-profile) Floyd Rose -so the Captain does have a point there. your videos make me happy:) just so much positive energy!
Whammy woo wah: Best name i've ever heard for it so far.
The ibanez headstock is the only superstrat headstock which gets it right.
Suhr might have super rare woods and unmatched tone but their headstock is fugly.
Totally AGREE~ By the way, does "fugly" mean fxxking ugly...? ^^o
Matt Ma yep
I've never wanted a guitar, more than that one
preferably in that gorgeous blue
I have a 1994 Ibanez S470JB MIJ that still has it, it has such smooth sound for a guitar that's older than me, let alone being 21 years old at least. I don't know about those, but if they have any similarity to the golden era S-series then they are going to be amazing.

Fuck, Lee has seriously upped the ante! He always had sweet blues style, but now he's paired it with a really tasty technique!
Ibanez is one of the top sources when it comes to well built entry level instruments! The GIO-series has some very nice axes to start playing and for a bit more $$ you can get these nice little babies.
Of course Chappers does have some serious contenders in his range of very nice axes!
Lol brazzers logo at 5:24! top left amp!
Yea man, it´s like... WTF!
I'm so glad I wasn't only one who noticed the Brazzers logo.. Lol
Mmm those ibanezs look aweso- ...is that a james hetfield iron cross on the wall?
I am the lucky owner of a Ibanez S520EX BBK, made in Japan, with 2 humbuckers (V1 & V2) and the vintage "Edge" Floyd Rose Tremolo, 22 frets and wizard neck and it's one of my most fav guitars. Yowser!!!!

I just picked up my Ibanez S series S670QM last weekend and I love it! Hey! from the U.S.A
Actually, I helped sell one of those grey ones when I worked at Guitar Center last year. So they might be UK exclusive now, but they were Guitar Center exclusives last year.
I've watched a lot of your reviews and I love the captain's lead choices, been trying to copy your approach, he doesn't do fast flurry solos, but fast is not always the way to go.. salute to the captain!!
I agree that the amp Rob was playing sounded very good on this demo.
Captain gets better and better!!!
Ibanez make some pretty versatile guitars, even the RGs and S series guitars are very versatile despite everyone just assuming they're "metal" guitars.
Rob makes every guitar sounding perfect!!! Every guitar he is playing I want to get!!!
You said it. The tone is in the hands.
Terry Music Untrue.
I definitely agree with the gateway drug thing, I got a S570DXQM in blue a few years ago and I absolutely love it. Yes the middle pickup does get in the way and I have effectively worn down one of the sides of the plastic cover and a have created a sloped pole piece just from playing.

dude, I don't know how much longer I can wait for the dorje album
There is a standard S series model with two humbuckers (no middle pickup).
The one I like is with the blackberry color finish.
Cap'n Lee's playing like a beast here. Awesome work. Although I've never managed to get the knack of the Wizard neck.
I have a 2015 indonesian made SIR70 and an 2000 Japanese made S520 (not prestige, only in the catalog for a year) The indonesian one needed a minor setup but is a very good value guitar. I love my Schecter Damien-7 and my Ibanez Destroyer...but my 2003 S-470 DXQM is the one I grab EVERY time I wanna practice.
I've got an early 2000's Ibanez superstrat guitar with HSH pickups. Interestingly the neck pickup sounds like a bit of across between a single coil and a humbucker. Loving the vids Rob, only just been getting into your channel.. and having a great bloody time!!!
S bodies aren't as thin as they look. They're actually pretty thick in the middle. Its an optical illusion.
I have a S870 with a flamed maple top and it has a really nice sound for most genres- the s series is are great and affordable
I think you could easily fix the problem Rob mentioned just by lowering the middle pickup (of course the output will diminish from small to a lot but with single coil you probably do want to get cleaner and lower output sound).
Holy dogshits Captain! Best lead i ever heard you play mate!
I LOVE THIS GUITAR I CANT WAIT TO GET THIS GUITAR
Really dig the look of these guitars!
Your my idol Rob, You rock!!!!
I have the S8QM, you wouldn't believe how well they resonate and sound for such a thin guitar, particularly since mine is an 8-string!
the middle pickup isn't a problem if you lower it. that's a great guitar!
Everyone should check out +plini. Very eclectic and diverse, one man band, genius, plays an Ibanez S.
Rob can never resist the Holy Diver riff.
every guitar the captain holds he can get an unbelievable tone out of it
Whoa, they resurrected the SA! Nice! I love Ibanez, especially for keeping it affordable.
Robs visit to Minnesota brought Skynyrd to his attention. Very nice Rob! There's more where that came from. :>
Hell yea Lee
get those leads out
nice to see ya playing more dude
Lee's guitar setup sounded very baller
S series is slick looking. sexy guitar. got an old SA and its preety awesome for a 200 quid guitar "used"
I played an Indonesian s7 with the in house bridge and it was amazing. I didn't have the money to snag it but its more or less everything I like about an SG with nothing I hate.
Man, has the captain's playing ever improved!
I have a black one with tremelo bridge. My 2nd guitar ever. Broke my first string yesterday.
Love my S, possibly my favorite guitar.
I like the looks of the Iron Cross in the background...keen for that!
6:56 that's exactly what I was thinking, I also prefer HH over HSH any day of the year.
the captain chops!....amazing!
Brazzers at 5:24 on the Victory amp. Recommending a little self hanky-panky, Rob?
I got one of the 30th anniversary Musicians Friend S-series earlier this year, I like it a lot. I've always thought they were cool looking guitars.
Did I just see a Brazzers banner on Robs amp at 5:23? :D
HenkkaChannel no?
Dreads looking awesome as usual dude :)
Holy Diver!!!!! Hell yeah!!!! LOVE YOU ROB!!!!
I really like the blue color. I wish the Satriani signature models were available in that color.
My RG is a Guitar Center only model, it doesn't even show up on Ibanez's website. I love it to bits, too.
Cap'n, nice playing at the beginning!
Those sounded great!
I guess having the middle pickup depends on the person who plays it. I put all my three pickups flush against the guitar with the humbuckers slightly higher than the single. Gives more sustain.
Did anyone else notice the Brazzers logo on the amp next to Rob at 5:25? Or the bunny by the Caption soon after?
I agree with him about the middle pickup. I have an S570MQM and that's really the only gripe I have with it. You have to modify the way you pick a bit to not hit the middle pickup....or buy a version without the middle pickup. I never use it anyway.
Its funny what was said about the S series gateway drug. I used to own an S series and now have 4 other Ibanez guitars.
Haha, hahhahhh! Rob, I didn't even realize I said it out loud but right after I did you paused and went "hear that...? That's the sound of the internet telling us there are many with a floyd rose trem."
I own the S series S420-BBS and it's a beast
Had an S series during my thrash days. Great body, great neck, but found that the tone wasn't good for anything other than high-gain stuff. It was a dark-sounding guitar--except for the Vai-inspired split humbucker positions, which were actually too tinny--and swapping the pickups didn't really help that enough. And I agree with LikeMike's comment below--the shape of the S series is just tied to a particular genre and maybe even a particular era...
Those guitars sound wicked awesome. Liked the review guys. I have to Ibanez goo rg's one with a pickguard and one without I think there pretty nice too
Rob Chapman I might be buying an ibanez s521 from your shop! WHOOOOOOOOOOOO. can't wait for dat edge bridge
I have an S521 and it is absolutely beautiful. It's incredibly light but has so much tone, one of the best guitars I have ever played and really good value! You won't regret buying one.
Jordan Scotland I was also looking at the s520 because of the edge bridge and might be getting that one. but, i'll pick when i have £££
They sound good even with the thin body and infinity pickups!
Rob Chapman i have been watching for only 1 month i just want to know y don't u ever make a video about bass guitars being a bassist myself i tried looking up videos on your channel about basses and couldn't find anything. BTW i love your hair. Yall keep up the vids

Sam Harding your left hand technique is similar to guitarists but the difference between guitarists and bassists technique wise is the picking hand I believe :)
daniel cullen 'Picking hand' says it all ;)
Couldn't think of a better term haha :D the fingering hand is a bit .. Well ... yeno
daniel cullen Hahaha - that's brilliant! I didn't think of that. :')
S671 because of the hardtail bridge, S670 because of the Edge Tremolo system
this is how Ibanez comes up with model numbers for guitars: last digit is "0" if the guitar has a whammy bar, "1" for fixed bridge
anyway, S Series = sexiest guitars on the planet indeed. thanks for posting
I have the Mahongany Oil variant. It sounds great and looks and plays fantstic. Also I'm Dutch and yes, Satésaus is delicious :P
