In this episode of Igniting Inspiration, we are highlighting Hannah Berkowitz and a mini-lesson that she taught her second graders during reading workshop. The video opens with Literacy Coordinator, Leah O’Donnell, sharing some key pieces to consider when planning for a mini-lesson. It then shows Hannah reflecting on how Calkins and the Units of Study break up skills for her students very intentionally, and she gives some thoughtful advice for choosing a mentor text for your class.
In the video, it shares snapshots of the 4 structural pieces to consider when planning a mini-lesson.

This video showcases an effective mini-lesson in a variety of ways. Not only does Hannah intentionally plan for all 4 pieces of the mini-lesson, she also utilizes many management tools to keep the lesson running smoothly. Between her hand signals, partner routine structures, and her ability to actively listen to students and synthesize their thinking, she keeps the mini-lesson moving along. She is very responsive to the students and she adjusts her instruction based on their current level of understanding. Her students also know and love the characters in the mentor text she chose. At the end of the lesson, she sends them off to read and purposefully practice the skills as they prepare for book clubs.
