I had '97 EL falcon in silver with a 5spd 768000km before it broke the crank in half once you replace the head gasket properly the first time, they don't do it again. Two clutches mainly due to skids. Car would tow almost anything as well. Never got hot never not started an oil leak here and there religiously serviced every 10k one of the best falcon's I've owned!! Bought a 1998 GLI EL this afternoon here we go again. Excellent vid BTW!
I bought an El falcon for my missus, it was the only car in our budget with rego that we could get our hands on. Little did I know, I would completely fall in love with it. Even though it’s been nothing but trouble for the past year with its 372,000kms, blown head gasket, rusted out sills and an absolute stack of issues and breakdowns that have plagued the poor thing, I never ever want to get rid of it! I’m hoping to bring it back to it’s former glory and completely rebuild it from top to bottom, this Aussie icon deserves nothing less. 🙏🏼
Mate, absolutely love your enthusiasm for the ol turd. Ya dead right though, they do deserve to be kept alive considering our car manufacturing industry in AUS is dead. Sounds like you got some classic Falc issues there with the blown head gasket, and i rekon the roof lining is sagging on your head too. Keep cruising aye...
Keep it alive. My Ef has done 467.000. Yes I've spent abit of money to keep it going. But worth every cent. Lower it put some mags on it and a red back Exhaust and they look and sound great
We had them in South Africa. Really great cars. No other car when it comes to durability comes near it. The Midrand Traffic Police Reaction Init had one, which was resposible for about 80% of the Hi-Jack arrests in the Johannesburg area in the Mid to late 1990s. The last known service was the 450,000 Km service.
Paramedics also operated them. I own an absolutely red 1996 XR6 with 203k on the clock, for many years since it was nearly new, and have loved the experience for 23 yrs of ownership. Parts here in SA is becoming a major problem so importing is only current viable option. I also own a Buick so I am used to doing the import thing now.
The first falcons in Australia were American imports. They fell to pieces on Australian roads so Ford Australia decided “bugger this, we are making our own.” To try and prove that the new Aussie made cars weren’t going to fall apart like the American cars do, Ford staged a 70,000 mile marathon. The only mechanical failures were due to accidents and 9 times out of 10 the cars were repaired and sent back out. 9 days later all five cars broke through the finish banner and catapulted the Falcon from yank shitbox to a symbol of Aussie hard yakka and became one of the legends of Aussie folklore.
El had more sound proofing, revised watts link geometry same as ef. xr6 thicker UV glass, improved side intrusion, revised seats, great car one of the best falcons
I've owned just about every model of falcon from the XT -BA, and a bunch of 250 cortinas also, and I agree its one of the best engines ever built, built ford tough, get a falcon up ya.
I have an el fairmont and I agree with you. This car is a beast, I have done heaps of driving into some of Australia's more remote and rugged parts and it has not let me down. Yes, driving this does feel like sitting on a sofa. I am tempted to try taking my ford across the great central road, northern territory to WA. I know it can handle it.
Cheers for the comment mate. I reckon they're an underrated piece of kit. Would love to do something similar, I'm thinking Broken Hill and the Mad Max Museum, maybe one-day. Keep cruising mate.
i had a Silver EL falcon i called it the "Silver Soldier" because despite not running with any thermo fans (for 15 years!) and going through 2 gearboxes 2 diffs and a bunch of tierods it just Soldiered on to about 400,000k's of road trips, towing stupid loads & doing massive skids! the Engine never gave up, in the end though it was "car cancer" that brought it down, i still miss it to this day!
Great video, I have the last EL Falcon sedan available in Australia, had to wait for it to come to W.A from another Ford dealer. The car's exterior is white, interior is Gunmetal Gray and had some XR6 parts on it such as sports suspension, upgraded brakes and red moulds instead of black around outside of car. The car went through and survived a wildfire in 2016 and the original engine has just over 403,000 kilometers on the clock. It's regularly serviced so apart from replacing break pads, oil filters/oil, spark plugs and tyres everything else is still the original factory parts. However, it now needs some TLC but parts are difficult to find, like door seals, key fobs and rear doors trims around the small windows which were pitted in fire. Car runs exceptionally well, feels strong on suspension and it will outlast me. The EL Falcon has served me well, I love it. However, I would have like to have had the opportunity to purchase one of the last Australian Falcons so people could see the difference in upgrades between the two vehicles.
Wow that’s sick mate! Love me a good falc. Recently picked me up a good au Ute and will hopefully be enjoying it for a few years to come. RIP Aussie manufacturing. Hope you enjoy ya new toy.
Best car ever made. I drive a 95 model Ef falcon futura. 467.000 on the clock. And still going strong. Lowered it, Put mags and a redback exhaust on it. Looks great. Drive it at least 250 kms every week. Love everything about it.
You are right about that headliner falling down. I use tacks to keep it in place. It looks like one of those disco lights when you look up at all the silver tacks holding the headliner up. I have got to get it redone professionally I guess.
The EF/EL Falcons looked way ahead of their time compared to the VR/VS commodores, and were a little more wider & longer. The inline six was easy to work on, but the a/c problems & central locking failures could really give you the sh**ts!
Spot on with that weird interior plastic. I grew up with two 90s Toyotas (that we still have) and recently bought an EB II GLi wagon and was surprised how the plastics felt. The old 4.0 is a venerable engine for sure. My M91LE is the same, it’s either silky smooth or like a jackhammer.
Dead right. If you’re used to Toyota’s as I certainly am, they’re a different world. That said I had to get rid of this one for more yard space for Toyota’s, but I will definitely be getting another Falcon in the future.
love mine had it 2 weeks drives great its got a few niggles but im fixing them one by one just love the way it cruises and lookes has low ks and still feels new head liner is perfect lol ....
Great overview! I remember riding the back of a family friend's BA XT as a kid. Very comfortable, but not very eventful. That was until one day their foot slipped reversing up a hill... thing took off like the drag tree went green! I knew there was something to the humble 6 from that time on. While the earlier ones may lack some punch (or just have really tall gearing), they do offer more driver feel than BA onwards.
Yeah mate. I drive a lot of Ba’s at work and they go like the clappers over the old intec. But the styling doesn’t ruffle enough feathers for me. Would love to Barra swap the AU...
@@FULLBOAR Yeah it's funny how an AU with just wider wheels can look better than any BA IMO. Don't even get me started on BA plastics, like closing a door slowly so the handle doesn't come off... Barra would wake up the AU for sure. The intech goes much better with a T5 as well, gives it a chance to rev!
Good informative review. I like the way you put a snippet of the cars in there What's the best year model in your opinion? I'm just about to sell my au ute because it hard for me to park and then put my shopping in the passenger side door Bloody hard for me to park too, I'm used to my 4cyl hatchbacks I'm guessing I wouldn't like parking a sedan or wagon at a busy supermarket neither
Haha I have recently bought an AU Ute. Love the thing. Have a bit of a soft spot for the ugly duckling, and they’re probably one of the most bullet proof yet still fairly simple models. Wouldn’t mind an old XG Ute one day tho...
When I was a kid, back in 1992, we got an EA from my Opa, and I loved it that much, I always thought "when I'm big, I'm going to get one of these same cars" and low and behold, when I was 17, my first car was of course, a canary yellow EA falcon, then I got a red EF, then lager traded that for a blue EF Xr8 which I still have. The I got another white EA that ran on gas. All those are now gone, including both my FG GT falcons, 2009 and 2012 models; but I still have my good old EF XR8 which as of this week it's a project car that I'm going to restore and get back on the road and I can't wait!
The EA-ED is honestly my dream car (probably due to nostalgia over anything else to be honest, my favourite aunt had a bright red manual EA when I was a kid), and I need to pick one up soon while I still can. Luckily my Outback's timing belt is almost due, and I'm a poor uni student, so I've got the perfect excuse to bite the bullet.
I've started searching, and I'll pick one up, once I find one with rego and RWC, or I find a place where I can store and work on it. Still kicking myself for missing the ED XR6 wagon that was on eBay last week.
Great homage to the mighty falcon. The old man had a FJ in the mid 60s but signed up for new XT Falcon 500, then 2nd hand XC 500 & XE GL , a new XF then a 1 yr old EA GL to drag a caravan around for a lap of OZ. All 6 cyl auto but the XF was a fancy S Pack, the digital dash was erratic but otherwise a good rig .
I bought my EL GLI Falcon back in Dec 2000 with 60000 odd ks on the clock, still have it today and just ticked over 152000ks. paint is starting to look a bit rough but still pulls like a train, never going to get rid of it.
I have an el falcon with only 129,000 k’s on it. It has its faults, as all cars do, but it is a solid vehicle. It won the Bathurst 1000, the Cops and taxi drivers used them, and Shane Warne and Sachin Tendulkar drove in one when they met don Bradman in Adelaide for A chat.
Pros: Cheap to buy, cheap to fix, comfy and smooth to drive. Cons: Ugly in standard trim and can be the rustiest pieces of shit on the road. FYI: I have just bought a rust free EL Fairmont (country car) to replace my full of rust EL falcon. LOL.
I have a1997 EL GLI that when i bought it had a blown head except for head problem the car was in EXELENT condition and only 20020km at the time in good condition it was worth 5000 i paid the ouner 1000 then i spent 2000 on a new head ,water pump, radiator and its sitting in my drive now because 2 years ago i purchased a 2003 XR6 BA falcon non turbo the car yard said he would give me 200 as a trade for the EL so now i have 2 cars
The EF is the last design of the E series that was made to look Aussie with a bit of European styling. The EL and AU were meant to look like the Ford Mondeo and Taurus so dealers can stick them side by side in the showroom and try lead people into choosing the cheap Imports over the local cars that Ford US saw as just a waste of their money and resources. The BA came into existence because Australians knew better and jacked up over the styling of the AU and started buying holdens instead. The AU Fairlane was close to what Ford Aus really wanted the AU to look like. Ford US were eventually forced to stop trying to kill off the aussie Falcon for the next decade or so. Ford Australia also wanted to export the next Falcon (the EA) overseas back in the late 80’s and called up the parent company asking for the funds to develop the EA and export it. Ford US chose out of pure spite to give Ford just half of the funds they wanted so Ford Aus were forced to choose between developing the EA or exporting the XF which at that time was out dated and wouldn’t be able to compete with anything made overseas. As the final FGX falcons were rolling off the production lines, Ford America wanted to take all of the Falcon and Territory related materials from concept data to working prototypes and tooling so they could improve their own designs, research and development. Ford Australia was always ahead of the Americans when it came to research and development of their cars from the GT and GTHO’s to the innovative intake manifold design of the EF which actually boosted bottom end torque to the intech to the Barra to the mating of the F150 cylinder heads to mustang engine block making the boss motors in the BA XR8 and GT to the virtual pivot steering in the Ford Territory making a large SUV handle like a sports car.
That’s a proper good write up ya have there mate. Working on both Aussie and Overs-seas Fords, I have come to realise that the Aussie product Is quite often far superior in both design and quality, as well as ease of maintenance. Imaging what Ford Aus could have done with proper resources…
@@FULLBOAR and if the supercar scare never happened. Ford wouldn’t have killed off the GTHO. I have often wondered what a modern day GTHO would be like. The phase 3 was the fastest 4 door production car with a top speed higher than the top spec Porsche 911 in 1971. A modern day GTHO would have to repeat that, which means a top speed of around 350kph.
Ive own a 1995 EF ford Fairmont Ghia 5.0l fuel injection and next year in selling it and Ive known most ef/El's are getting more popular in these days and Ive got a sunroof ,stock interior and engine and they all are in very good condition of the age and my mate said soon I get me old girl to be back on road easy and offered me 7grand with FG rim rims for me to upgrade next car soon I'm buying and a boat for fishing
mate an el with a 5-0 would be dank. I got to drive an AU xr-8 and they light up the rear wheels on demand. Ya should keep ya hands on it, cos they are starting to become desirable. Keep cruising mate...
A Holden Commodore never had a problem with blowing cylinder head gaskets & my experience with Fords as of late - computers. I've had to replace the ECU in my great uncles adopted daughters Ford EL Falcon Futura as it had a stalling issue,it has been a common failure point in the EA onwards Falcons alongside with the ignition coil packs in the EF & likely also the AU Falcons, the TFI module was also an item which commonly failed in the EA-ED & the EL Falcons. My Holden VY SS Commodore which has done over 366,000 kilometres has never had a PCM or ignition coil failure which the Fords seem to have, even my dads 2000 Model Holden VX Commodore while the 3.8 litre Buick L36 V6 engine isn't as smooth as the 4 litre Falcon engine it's performance is about the same but the VX Commodore will start in the mornings.unlike the Falcons sometimes don't ,so at least that car will get you to work & not have an ignition or ECU failure like the Falcons do. She was charged $280 AUD by an auto electrician to replace a fuel pump relay & I replaced the EFI relay which was intermittently causing the engine to cut out, both relays get too hot being mounted underneath the coolant reservoir but the engine still stalled so it had to be a faulty ECU which was also causing the fuel pump & EFI relays to cycle on & off so for $67 AUD for some connectors,a new relay & another ECU the car is fixed. So what happened to Holden ? Maybe the idiots in General Motors thought that I got a Ford when I'm glad that I'm a Holden who bought a Commodore & not a Falcon now. They had issues with the Falcons all the way to the end particularly with the BA-BF Falcon ignition coils failing by the 100,000 kilometre Mark !
Mate I don’t think you understand the point of the video. I wasn’t knocking commodores, as I do love me a good commy. I was more suggesting that the AU doesn’t deserve the bad wrap that it did. It’s unfortunate that u had a bad run with falcons, but every Aussie car had its problems! The Falc has its ball joints and ecu issues as well as head gasket problems, (which the AU had a laminated metal gasket which fixed most of the issues). But the commo has a few issues as well, such as heater taps that explode and cook the engine before you can even notice the temp gauge and caster bushes that flog out every 100000. Not to mention that they are also prone to coil packs and coil drivers dying. This video isn’t about Commo vs Falcon, however I did touch on it at the start a bit, but more of a shame that the AU is so ridiculed, as well as the fact that it’s a huge shame that the Aussie manufacturing industry is DEAD! That said the Ecotec is indestructible!
Boar vs falcon both huge species but the boar is backing off with the falcon charging forward 🙀. As according to this clip the boar was running the falcon 🤣
I couldn't have put it better myself. I've owned two Falcons - an EA and a BF. Sure, both had its issues, but for that long-legged cruising ability, few cars match the Falcon. I now own a Mondeo, which is far more refined, far more luxurious, far more comfortable, and far fewer rattles than any Falcon I have ever driven, but part of me still yearns for a Falcon.
Back in the late 90’s I bought an ex taxi, EA Falcon, showing 970,000 Kilos. Drove it for 7 years until a young idiot hit it and wrote it off. Pretty much the only probs I had was the power steer & steering rack leaking. Oh, and when it hit 999,999 kilos, the speedo died !
Hahahah love stores like this. Makes me so sad to think we no longer make falcons, especially when they can be a source of such rewarding motoring. Gotta try and keep the remaining ones going for as long as possible!

Sold my old EL with 90,000 ks on the clock for a 2014 VF Commodore.. Huge mistake...
06:02 Yup. Comfiest car to drive around in.
LOL.
Nice Patrol Jab ;)
I think it was pretty good looking pure 90's design, definitely better than the AU
Robocop had an American version in the 80's
Last of the good Shape 90's
Yes love the Issac Butterfield reference
Fully agree
I'm looking the parts Ford faimond please
There good cars the e series falcons, I still have my EF XR8
Up the el💪
Skitz falc Bröther
Boar vs falcon both huge species but the boar is backing off with the falcon charging forward 🙀. As according to this clip the boar was running the falcon 🤣
I had nothing but problems with the ea eb falcons the el was good for towing but still had that head problem. The Barra is the way to go
Ya not wrong
i have a eb II fairmount ghia is a great car
Love me an old E series.
Too bad Ford gave up making them due to everyone wanting a Japanese SUV . A shame
I'm looking at buying one in NZ that fat as
4age swap the falco
Elliot lol yeah mate
Barra
(Patrol Drivers Going Berserk) Luv My Barra....Hate Its Fuel Use.
I just bought myself a 1997 el falcon gli S it's 2023 and I love it
Heck yeah brother
just bought and ef
yew
Head lining. The hood is an American bonnet. Just saying. Commodore driver demands proper English.
Why can't an aussie billionaire bring back the falcon....
Maybe one day mate...
Why do I see new commodores on the roads but no falcons....
@@FocusRS500 i think they just ran out of funding towards the end. The fg falc is pretty much just a ba with different panels. Id still own one tho.
I have bf with barra engine, barra is great, falcons are .not
I will admit that the BA is probably the worst Falcon in terms of quality. Shame they didn't put the Barra in the AU.
My mum has a falcon it is shit she is getting a new car so falcons suck
Yeaaaah boiii that’s the go
