If there’s no more slots for additional breakers, you don’t pigtail like Don said. You use tandem breakers for the 15amp circuits which are 2 breakers in the width space of 1.

I’m electrician. Yes they sell them. Don’t listen to this guy. That panel is all done wrong. You can’t have no more than 2 grounds under the same lug an the must be the same gauge. Also the neutrals are to be separated. Don’t ever pigtail. But some Brands like Homeline Square D you can.

how does a 2 year old video only have comments from the last 30 days? That said, he's right. In a panel the NEC rule is 1 screw = 1 wire. Also, major items like a furnace should be on their own circuit. If they want to do a pig-tail it should be on another breaker or the wire should be joined in a junction box outside the panel. (because some inspectors are fussy about wire nuts in a panel)

Old CutlerHammer circuit breakers are designed for two wire use. And the picture on the breaker, has two wires, so, they are being used, as designed, and in compliance with code. Eaton bought CutlerHammer, adding some confusion to homeowners, whom might not know they can now buy Eaton breakers, but these breakers are NOT designed for two wire use. but, if the picture on the breakers has two wires, then it's in compliance with code (used as designed). But blindly calling all double taps out of compliance, is not what the code says. However, this is usually a trivial fix.

If you are going to scab an additional circuit onto a breaker without installing another breaker just add the circuit to an existing junction box fed from that breaker. Or install a duplex breaker in the panel if you want it landed in the panel and you don't have room for a full-size breaker.

Been doing electrical work for 39 years and I have never seen a double tapped breaker trip due to an overload. A single tap breaker could easily have a bigger load than a double tap breaker. People are freaking out pretty much about nothing.

But it gives home inspectors something to justify their existence over. Sure, 90% of the time it is wrong, but it IS NOT dangerous. HIs use "double taps" as scare tactics.

@@jasonault3511 He never said anything about code. he said in 39 years he's never seen a double tapped breaker trip. In my over 30 years I've never seen one fail or burn up as HIs would lead you to believe. Sure, in most cases it's a code violation, that does NOT automatically equate to a safety violation.

Square D QO 40a and below are allowed to double tap with solid wire, both wires same gage, one on either side of screw under the plate. Amy other types that are a setscrew or single screw wher the wire fits a v groove underneath must be pigtail, not double tapped.

Just wire nut a wire onto the 2 wires a pigtail and then put the single wire under the breaker. this is so overblown. I have been in the trade since Aug 1978 thank God i am getting ready to call it quits. or if you have an extra space on the panel then get a new breaker and do it that way. oh how about telling the homeowner how they are to install a arc fault breaker now. and that breaker cost $50 for that one breaker. and when building a new house you have to have those breakers for most of the house now in the NEC. adds hundreds of dollars to the cost. oh welll it is the NEC .

Old work is grandfathered in I'm not going to use the new breakers on old work. EMT don't need arc fault unless the wires are no good. No mice will get through metal. And finally off grid can get away with more things than on grid power. 73

I call it it SHUFFLING we do it in Northern California to fit EV CHARGERS in a full main panel. We just grab "Twins " breakers and can run 2 Circuits in one space. You can consolidate a lot of Circuits and open up more real state for EV's / Back Up Generators / Dedicated Circuits ETC ETC......

I get really tired of trades people acting like everyone is an idiot and that plumbing and electrical work are rocket science. If one can read and follow instructions, get a good DIY book and do it yourself. Or, watch some videos on here where experts will walk you through doing the job.
At my last house, I installed a new 200 Amp breaker panel. I pulled the meter, pulled out the old split service entrance fuse panels, and installed the new breaker panel. When I had the job done, the power company installed an upgraded service entrance and drop from the pole. I had the local building inspector check it out and put his stamp on it. I saved myself hundred of dollars by doing it myself. And, I have the pride of doing so and the knowledge gained that I will carry for life.
I also installed central AC, an electronic air cleaner, and gas water heater in that house. All was still working when I sold the house 30 years later.

I was also lucky enough to grow up in a house with decent hand tools and small power tools. It wasn't until I was in high school that I realized that not all of my classmates lived in a house where there was an electric drill or bench grinder.
On the other hand, lots of those who grew up in the white-collar households went on to college and what are now 6-figure jobs. They can easily pay someone else to get their hands dirty. I don't know who was luckier.

If your panel looks like that (a mess) and it's an out-dated POS like those Cutler Hammer with the tan handle breakers, call a GOOD electrician and get it changed out to the proper size. You can get rid of a crappy panel, have room for the future and no more double taps.

    • @BryanTorok
      @BryanTorok 2 роки тому +6

There is nothing wrong with that panel other than the double taps that are easily and inexpensively fixed. And, really, if the screw is properly tightened so that both wires are securely held there is nothing unsafe about having two wires under one screw, code or not.
