16x16 Character Sprites Drawn In Real Time - Pixel Art Tutorial And Process
Вставка
- Опубліковано 10 лют 2025
- Another video explaining my thought process behind making static characters at 16x16 pixels, including all four directional facing for use in game development, but NO animation!
This starts with a female looking character and I edit it into a male looking character later.

This was excellent! I played around with pixel art a while back, and it never seemed to click for me. I came back to it today and your video has really helped me get a feel for it. I found it easy to listen and follow along, thank you.
Thank you, too! It makes me so happy to hear that I was helpful! You're welcome and I hope you make some stuff you really love!!
This was fun to watch :D
Thank you! I worry about that!
Making my first game. Pixel art seems very simple at first. But it's hard to work with limited pixels. Thanks for the help!
I'm glad I could be helpful, hopefully I can get some more videos out soon!
Starting pixel art seems really easy when you first start making one or two little guys but then you add size restrictions and color restrictions to the mix and the difficultly level can jump! I try to approach it like a puzzle so I don't get too annoyed at it, though there are times where you have to accept that things aren't going to look "perfect" and have to move on, it happens!
I hope your first game goes well! Its both exciting and intimidating making one for the first time, I think!
It’s so fun though. How’s your game going? I’m going to make one soon I’m in the planning phase
i play a lot of instruments and i am alround a multi talented person.
I'm 34 now and every time i gave drawing a chance, i gave up after some time and switched back to my other creative hobbies. so never really got the basics down.
Now that i am working on a game and fail to find an artist, i decided to give it another go.
Watching all the tutorials on youtube was helpful, but i really appreciate your video. i just try to copy you in real time and do my personal twists every now and then.
it is amazing for learning. thanks! would love to see more of that!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm really glad you find it helpful!! People copying my art from my videos and changing it to suit their own preferences is my aim, so I'm glad you're using it that way! Imitating things that already exist is a great way to learn. Pixel art can be intimidating at first and it feels like there are a lot of rules, but you got this!!
Its really hard to get started in a lot of creative fields, and they're all so intimidating. I've tried picking up instruments as well, watercolor paints, acrylic painting etc and found it very discouraging. Maybe its my brain being upset i"m not instantly good at things but it also feels like as we get older, I'm in my mid thirties as well, that we're running out of time but in the long run we should just keep trying and see if something resonates with us.
I hope your creative journey is a fun and fruitful one, and I'll keep posting these videos as I can get them out! I'm aiming for every two weeks, but it may end up being once a month!
@@MomentaryUnicornI think it is coined gifted kid syndrome we often discredit or give up on things we are not instantly good at. Like working hard and getting isn't a process and only talent is that way.
@ Oh! I can definitely see that being the issue for some people!! Good catch!
Excellently done. Now I have a style to work with for 16x16.
Thank you and i'm glad I could help!!
Love these videos. It’s easy to follow along.
I'm glad to hear that! Thank you so much!
Love this. Thank you
No problem!! I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Super helpful to follow your process, thanks for sharing
You're welcome!! 😀
Thanks for the tutorial. Really helpful. 😁
You’re welcome! I’m very happy to hear that!! 😁
@@MomentaryUnicorn no prob. A lot of other tutorials focus on tools & broad strategy but I love following your vids because you share how you're thinking about something as you make it, and your style is awesome
@@cameroni178 Ohh thank you!
Yeah I wanted to share the thought process behind it more so than the tools.
Anyone can teach the programs I'm using and there's plenty of tutorials out there I'm sure, but understanding why someone makes the design decisions they make is very important too!
I like this kind of videos thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much for leaving a comment!
I just joined a game jam, and finished a suggestion for a top-down character for my team... and oh boy is it time consuming to make those, especially if you want them complete with animations for 4 directions...
I can imagine! Its great when you have all the time in the world but that time restriction sure puts the pressure on!! Hoping for the best for your team!!
@@MomentaryUnicorn Thankfully I got an update, turns out I'll be allowed to only make 2 directions instead of 4, we'll use a more beat-em-up approach to characters, while still maintaining a chibi top-down perspective..... it will make it so much easier for me...
@@costelinha1867 That's great!! I would LOVE to hear about the project btw, do you have a gamejolt or itch account that your team will be posting it?
this should have more views
Awe thank you! Glad to hear you think that!!
I don't know how to do animation help me please
I'm not the best at animation at the moment and am learning how to do it myself right now! I'd definitely go look at some sprites from The Spriters Resource and see if someone has animated something similar to what you want to make and study it! It can do wonders!
@MomentaryUnicorn ok thank you! Also i found a assest pack pixel art with character and it's animation! I learned animation from that
damn this goes really hard
Happy to hear it, thank you!!
Fellow artist sharing my support with a sub :)
Right back at ya! We gotta support each other! Thank you!!
Is this program on mobile and on tablets or just pc? Is there a fee to use this program and can the program animate the sprite?
There is a free version of Aseprite called Libresprite that you can use. libresprite.github.io/#!/ You can also download a program called GraphicsGale graphicsgale.com/us/ which is also for PC but free! I don't use GraphicsGale myself but if you want a lot of sprites on one image I hear it handles it much better than what I use.
I don't think there is a mobile version of these programs, and unfortunately I only do art on my PC so I'm not sure what program to recommend for mobile, but I've heard there are people who only make pixel art on their phones so there must be some decent apps there!
Wishing you the best of luck, if you have any other questions I'll be happy to try to help you!
WAIT AESRPITE???!!! THIS THAT PROGRAM??!!! THAT I SEE YOU PLAY ON STEAM ALL THE TIME
YEAH! Its actually in a way weird that you can play software on steam but its nice and easy to update etc XD
@@MomentaryUnicorn Source film *is* part of the library, so I suppose it isn't THAT strange
@@genuine8776 Fair point actually!
