  • www.vladtv.com - Singer/songwriter Eric Bellinger opened up to VladTV about his songwriting process, what makes him the best of the best and how Usher helped him celebrate his first Grammy.
Bellinger is currently in the realms of penning huge hits for the likes of Trey Songz, Chris Brown, Usher and many more. The California native explains how creating a song tailor made for an artist is the key to grabbing their attention. Bellinger says when writing "Fine China" for Chris Brown, he made sure the Michael Jackson influence floated through the single. He also added how he summarized Usher's illustrious career in the track, "What Happened To U."
The artist also discusses the moment he found out he won his first Grammy during a recording session with Usher. Check out the interview above.

All this talk lately about culture appropriation, but I'll point out another point of view on it. Listen to what Eric said in the beginning of the video, he said RnB dudes still writing about baby or I love you are dead. The "hit songs" are more hiphop than RnB. So what he really saying is black people are throwing away RnB. Sam Smith though is singing about love and baby but when he does it people want to call that culture appropriation. Sam Smith just pick up something black people are throwing away. Black radio didn't break John Legend's All of Me or Pharell's Happy they were broken on Top 40 and Adult Contemporary formats.
The thing is is though when you look at those hip hop RnB records with their vulgar lyrics they don't do as well as the traditional records. They don't do well on the Hot 100 and they really don't get much play outside of the US because a lot of countries won't even play those types of songs. These artist think they winning but they only winning because the bar is low. Chris Brown's Loyal as big as a hit as it was ain't got shit on Forever when you look at the numbers worldwide. Black Rnb artists making this type of music is costing them entire markets around the world.

tochiRTA No, it's because the people that run urban radio and the labels are hip hop people now instead of RnB people like it was in the 90s. The late 90s and 2000s is when hip hop blew up, so hip hop people started getting the positions of power jobs at labels and radio. So they are going to look for a more hip hop sound and rap has always been more explicit and vulgar in the lyrics. When black artists make relatively clean songs they win bigger, Drake's biggest track last year was Hold On We Going Home. Jason Durelo had a bunch of hits that did better than Chris Brown's records and Durelo was talking about big butts and sex like everybody else he just did it in a clean way and his records went bigger. My point is black people are throwing away traditional RnB to make "ratchet" music. Ratchet music is limiting the audiences. All this talk about culture appropriation lately is really black artists feeling like they're losing now in the overall music scene and it's because they are losing. They are losing because of choosing to go ratchet. Usher was on The Voice man. Mainstream American TV. Why the fuck is he making songs about strippers and getting head. Everybody talking all this shit about Iggy but Fancy and Black Window are the least ratchet songs she has put out in her career and they blew up. Iggy cleaned her style up and that's why she blew up.

ADAJ3 A song is like a work of art. As an artist you create this piece with no intention of receiving an award. Look at the Roots for example. They've won 3 grammy's 2 of which are collabs with John Legend. You think the roots and john legend were sitting in the studio and saying "hey lets' try to make a grammy contending album?" Fuck no.

very true. & the "baby baby i love you" songs from the 1960s - 1990s STILL resonate today. i'm sure a quick hit is cool $-wise but $ + standing the test of time requires having meaningful lyrics (as you said). substance matters.
