    I really like that comment about everything new becomes used at the end.
    Also learning to weld was one of the best things I ever did. It’s a tremendously useful skill to have.

    I've been fooling with bumper-pull trailers from 4x8 to 20+ ft. and 1000# to 20k for 40 years. The OP has some good points with which I agree. But I'd like to offer some additional considerations for those who want a quality, long-lasting rig. I admit up front that this is really not useful for those in the $500 market and this stuff costs money. Also keep in mind that if you go to a trailer dealer (rather than the "box" stores), you can probably mix and match options, perhaps with a special order, so you don't have to "find" them all on a single trailer in someone's inventory. But if you want to be happy with your rig for the next 30+ years, here's the list:
    Forget the expanded metal floor. You already saw the problems. Plus, that day you have to haul some furniture or something in the rain it will be ugly and she ain't gonna be happy. And if you have to add wood or some such to beef it up, why not just go that way to begin with? My strong preference is a solid steel (checker plate) floor. Even treated quality 2" wood will rot over the years, and let's be honest - 95% of us are going to store it outside all the time. Sometimes the wood is not painted or even treated and sometimes only the topside is. After you replace the floor 2 or 3 times you will wish you had listened.
    The tubular top rail (and uprights if possible) do help considerably with strength and stiffness. Also look for the spacing of the uprights to be not too far apart.
    Enclosed sides can be useful, but can also interfere with using the top rail as a tie-down point. They also add weight and subtract from the payload, and make the rig stiffer.
    Get sealed LED lighting that is mounted in such a way (recessed or protected) that the lights won't likely be dragged off on the ground/tree/whatever, or bashed when you back into something. Check all the wiring underneath to make sure it's not hanging down unprotected. I like it run inside metal conduit. Some of this you can fix up at home. The lights stuck on a stalk as an after thought such as on the trailers in this video tend to have very limited lifespans. Those back corners are the most-bumped part of the whole exterior.
    Reinforced fenders are good. They're gonna get wrinkled over time and use. Removable/replaceable ones would be nice.
    Tie down points are important, but you really won't know where they need to be until you load your equipment on your trailer. Suggest you figure on adding them yourself as needed after purchase. But don't use wimpy stuff unless you have a wimpy load, install them correctly, and check the hardware, backing, and direction of pull.
    I love tongue boxes but agree the expanded metal is silly because all your stuff gets grimy, quick. You can get a decent locking enclosed steel box from Harbor Freight or somewhere very reasonably priced. Unlike the OP, I use mine pretty much only for trailer stuff, not for lawn stuff, i.e., tie downs/chains, extra hitch pins, spare bearings, wheel chocks, board for under the jack foot, bungee cords, locks, chains, grease, bulbs, and even the ball mount from the truck's receiver hitch when the trailer is unhooked and the ball won't be used for a different trailer. Make sure the box won't interfere with jack operation, or move the jack.
    You're only gonna be able to use that tongue box with the V- or A- style tongue, not the single beam. As the OP pointed out, those are stronger and more stable anyway. My newest trailer has a 3-beam tongue.
    A flip-up style jack can be a benefit so it won't drag and get bent off road or on a curb or something, and it's easy to replace if anything happens to it. Not so much with a welded-on vertical jack. At least get a bolt-on.
    After 40 years of towing, I've yet to see one of these little trailers with a decent tag mounting location. I put mine on the ramp gate.
    The side rail on the side of a trailer with a side gate is probably going to be flimsy, because it has no front corner attachment. Some makers beef that upright up, but it's still a cantilever structure with very little below it. One company has removable side rail sections that not only create the gate opening but double as ramps and look like a regular side rail when stowed for towing. But I would not get a side gate unless I really needed it - more cost and less strength.
    The stamped hitch couplers with the little flip-up latch are cheap and common, but have faults. Be darn sure you put a padlock, locking pin, or some such in the latch locking hole before towing. Also, keep the adjusting nut underneath properly adjusted. Another common latch involves a hand knob to screw down the adjustment on the ball each time you hook up. Works well, but if you hook and unhook every day, it's a pain. My strong preference, especially for heavier trailers, is the "bulldog" style hitch with the sliding coupler lock which is in turn secured with a pin. No adjustment, easy to hitch and unhitch, and very strong.
    Which brings us to safety chains. Hook 'em up right, every time, with proper hardware (no padlocks, quick-links, or formed eyebolts, please). Sometimes they have to be modified to work properly with your vehicle and tow setup.
    A spare wheel & tire assembly, spare wheel bearing and seal set, and a couple extra lug nuts are very good insurance against leaving your trailer and its whole load on the side of the road while you go search for a bearing of unknown size. Do that ahead of time. Write down every size and part number you come across and file it away. I have an entire new loaded hub stored in my tongue box on one trailer. Spare tire mount is optional, but might keep you from moving the spare out and forgetting it.
    Longer trailers (from hitch ball to axle) are easier to back up, sometimes much easier. For the same trailer deck length, the axle being further back helps. And the more deck you have in front of the axle, the easier it is to load it properly, weight-wise. If the axle is dead center of the deck, you're asking for trouble. If you have a tall truck and a (vertically) short trailer that you can't see, you can add some sort of stalks at the rear corners so you can see the trailer before it gets over in your side mirror. I find those invaluable for little 5x8 trailers without a ramp gate when behind a 4x4 dually with a service body.
    Just my $0.02.

    Thanks for sharing your knowledge on this. I was just up @ Tractor Supply looking but didn't buy and was hesitant about quality. There was a leftover from last year and it was rusted and pitted, just did not feel right so I guess it was a gut feeling steering me away. I'm not a young kid, I got involved in lawncare/maintenance in my late teens to 20's and got back into it when I grew tired of the corporate grind and took a job at a resort. It is just something I like to do, is meditative and I am just tired of working for someone else, so I am coming back to this on my own. Just a small business, nothing big. Thing is I just never knew about trailers in the way you spoke of them here, so thanks for this video, you saved me some grief and I learned something.

    I bought an old tandem trailer off my work for 75 bucks and 40 bucks for 4 Goodyear tires that are not in bad shape. It needed work so it was just sitting out back. Not sure on brand no tag on it, it is 80 in wide by 10ft. It even has a heavy duty center support in the A frame. Believe it is two 3500 pound axles. Iam in the process of fixing the tandem axle support brackets and need new wood and other stuff.

    That is great advice Dan for they new folks! I still use a 6 x 12 double gate single axle and I love it!!! Single axle trailers perform great in crowded areas where the turns are tighter to make. I was going through to many tires on my old double axle trailer! Thanks for the videos Dan!!!

    The major downside to the economy trailers are, there made for the occasional use not a business than plans on using them everyday. There are several guys in my area hauling 4-6K worth of equipment on the cheapest trailer they could find. overloading a lightweight trailer can eat tires up fast do to the frame flexing. Also many mom and pop trailer shops sell trade-ins that are far better than the box store trailers. 4 or 5 cans of spray paint and pow a used trailer will look sharp again.

    I'm using that same 5x10 wood floor drop gate one from Lowes ($1200) you said you started with also Dan. It's towing a 42" ZTR, 2 push mowers and a weedeater rack. It's a great trailer! I've had it for almost 4 years and when I recently started my lawncare business this year I started using it for the first time commercially. The wood floors are still in great shape! But there will be a point I will want to upgrade as you said so you gave me some good ideas for a future trailer purchase!

    My first lawn service trailer was one of these straight frame 12" tire mesh floor deals, with a ramp. It served its purpose. I wouldn't do it over. I would just keep using the pick-up bed until I could afford a real trailer. My 2nd trailer(still in use) is a 6x8 Anderson I bought used for $700 in great condition.

      A "REAL TRAILER"! That's a very ignorant thing to say to the thousands of my subscribers that like their trailers and make money with them. I have been in this industry since Highschool and have used all types of trailers. Not one is any better than the rest as long as you are using the trailer for what it is intended for. A mesh floor trailer is light weight, easily towed and moved by small trucks, SUV's and even by hand. They hold the equipment just as well as your "real Trailer" and they usually cost 25-40% less which is perfect for the new guy or weekend warrior. As time goes on and equipment may grow, with it may come the need for a heavier duty trailer but if not, these little mesh floor trailers are as "Real" as real needs to be.

    The 5x8s you can get for $650-$700 are great, if you brace them with wood. I've got two of them, one is my grunt trailer, I've had 2,500 pounds on it, and it's been braced with 2x8s and it carried that weight no problems. I enjoyed it enough I ran across a 2010 I think, it's got the good style of gate latches with literally one or two uses and garage stored the entire life of it for $400. I don't work it like a mule, it's perfect.

    One thing worth noting, here in PA any trailer rated over 3000 LBS are required to have brakes (unless the laws have changed). I have a trailer rated at 2990 just to avoid having the need to have brakes. This may apply to other states, check your local DMV for the applicable laws.

    One good bump down here in florida. .and then you bend that metal and run the risk of damages to your mower or the tongue. trailer selection is important to me because my first trailer that I have sucks...flat metal sides..spot welds...cheap tires...I wish I would of got a big tex (more expensive ) but it runs dexter axes round tubular rails led lights. ..I have replaced my lights once and tires twice on my dual axle "triple C" trailer junk!

    I got a 14 foot (I think) by 7 foot. Double 3500 pound axle with wood floor. Its honestly way more than I need and too big for the truck me thinks. Usually only have a 42inch zero turn, push mower, trimmer, and blower. Wish it I went smaller. Truck is a Toyota Tacoma. Seems to pull fine but I have no idea if I am overloading the truck or not. Burnt through a set of brakes so thinking I need trailer brakes but don't want to install on the truck because I dont think i'll keep it long term.
    I'm really thinking about going to a long bed truck and getting a gate put on the back of it. Then just work out of the back of it like what you did with that old ford last year.
    One thing you didn't touch on much in the video was gates. The longer the better. That way the mower deck wont scrape when you drive up it.

    WHAT SIZE TRAILER DO YOU NEED TO HAUL A 60 INCH CUT DECK ZERO TURN MOWER

  • @johnlincicum6390
    @johnlincicum6390 8 років тому

    People around here with the hills, snow covered potholed roads and farms with tons of diesel 4X4 trucks don't even look at any of those trailers! They buy a car hauling trailer! 6-7 feet by 14-16-18 feet to fit 50"-63" John Deere diesel tractors or 42"-72" gas or diesel zero turns and they put 3 of them on a single trailer with racks for weedeater, blowers and everything mounted on them for a single crew of 3-4 people per crew. I know a single family that has 18 tractors/zero turns running 6 trucks with 6 trailers going out doing lawns everyday! Crazy huh?!

    • @johnlincicum6390
      @johnlincicum6390 8 років тому

      A lot of times, you can find a good used car hauling trailer around here for as little as $600 at farm equipment dealer's auctions up to $1200 and just go over the trailer's wiring for the lights and check/repack the wheel bearings for next to nothing and you already have at least 225-75-15 or even 235-75-15 tires on it and it's a tandem axle trailer.

    I like the size of the 5 x 8 trailer, but I don't like that they put the wheels so far back; they should have put a jack on the tongue, because if you're loaded and you have a bearing go bad on the trailer it would be very difficult to unhook the trailer so you could run to the parts store to get a bearing, or unhooking for any other reason especially loaded.

    FYI: check out trailer sales in addition to your box store. My experience has been that once above entry level you get a better built trailer for about the same price point. The trailer company will not usually deal in the 4x6 size trailer.

    Hey, Dan. Would a 5x8 Texas Bragg trailer work fine for a part-time lawn care business or a just starting out owner? As I am considering that brand, since it's a well-known brand trailer. While I'm asking about trailers, what do you think about Continental Cargo covered trailers and BigTex trailers? Thanks.

    What do you mean exactly when you say "PUSH MOWER" Are you talking about a REEL MOWER? and also what do you mean by "WALK BEHIND" would'nt you walk behind any mower if its not one you sit or stand on?

    • @BigdaddiZ
      @BigdaddiZ 7 років тому

      Junaid push mower = your everyday household lawn mower. Usually around a 21 inch cut
      Walk behind = a bigger version of that used by professionals. Usually a 30 inch cut or bigger, and cuts alot faster than a push mower.

    why are all the wheels so far back on the trailer? Does this not make the trailer terribly front heavy? The trailer will be able to take probably, for a while at least, but the rear suspension of my car would not like it too much. :S Or am I just imagining things? :D

      Unless it's a tilt-bed trailer (which requires different geometry), you want the axle behind the center of the trailer so that it's easy to properly load it with enough weight on the tongue. If you load even a little 500 lb. trailer with the tongue too light, it will wig-wag a 1-ton truck and make it unsafe. If your vehicle can't take the correct tongue weight on it's hitch, that's a car problem, not a trailer problem. Also, the greater the distance between the hitch ball and the trailer axle, the easier it is to back the trailer up.

    From a european perspective all of these trailers are totally crap. None of them would be allowed on the roads here. No brakes? No position lights at front. Painted. No real floor or planks. No dampers. Omg.

    • @DansVlog
      @DansVlog  7 років тому +1

      We have trailer brakes when the weight requirement makes it mandatory. Small trailer don't need side marker lights or front position lights when the trailer is under a certain length.

    • @johndough9187
      @johndough9187 5 років тому

      Maybe they need brakes in Europe because the cars there can only stop 500 lbs.
