- We got a hold of a Kel Tec KS7 and had some fun with it on the range. A really fun gun to shoot, however also one that has room to improve. Our"comeback" review is the Kel Tec KS7!

I bought this gun for home defense and had some issues with it not feeding properly and ejecting all the shells from the tube. I sent mine to Kel Tec two days after buying it and got it back within a month. It had updated parts, I didn't have to pay for shipping, and I haven't had a single issues since I got it worked on which was about 5 months ago. I got it for $350 and personally really like it. By the looks of it, the feeding issues have been worked out and newer models should be g2g. If your on the fence about it the only thing is it kicks like hell due to its weight and the butt pad is pretty minimal so I'd definitely recommend getting a limbsaver for it.
Samn $350?its $589 now!
The malfunctions you had I have also experienced with mine. I have only shot mini shells. When I asked Keltec about it, they asked if I did the 200 round regular shell break in. I was confused because I had not read that in the manual. I’ve gone over the manual twice and have not found that break in recommendation. I bought this gun right before the covidiocy started and really wish I’d stocked up on shells, because I haven’t been able to get my hands on enough to do this mystery break in procedure!
Got me one of these about a week ago. You are right sir the thing kicks like a mule. I shot bird shot and buck and slugs it’s a beast. I’m a avid clay pigeon shooter and shoot around 200-300 rounds every weekend. I shot 100+ out of it and my shoulder looked like I shot 500 out of my normal shotgun. Definitely investing in a shoulder pad when I can.
A riot gun that handles like an MP5? Sign me up.
Let me say this about that. I really enjoyed your review. It was spot on. I ran my KS7 through similar tests with types and sizes of rounds. I did not experience the jamming issues at all. I did have light primer strikes as well . However as I went through the rounds those problems went away like the machine and I were working it out. I looked at the bolt and firing pin design and found no noticeable flaws but it is concerning. If that was your first shot uh oh! Your quite correct that that could seal the deal between life and death. I purchased mine for home defense. I find no problem with reaching for it first. Then you have to go with the saying the reason you keep a pistol close is to give you the advantage to get to the shotgun. I did accessorize mine as well. The list is extended butt pad, picatinny rail attachment, aluminum follower, Red dot sight and a light up front on the pic rail, QD sling with attachment point, and I painted the whole thing tiger stripped orange on black. Looks way kool too. I would buy again 4.0 Stars out of 5.
This is the kind of feedback we love to hear about. Thank you for sharing.
I just picked one up today and LOVE it
Definitely a handy little gun. Thanks for watching!
WHERE????!!!??
Stay fit and free forever Sumner Gun and Supply in Gallatin, TN. I honestly didn’t even know what it was when I walked in. They had it sitting on the counter
@@bobbyb608 That's awesome!
Worth the money? I’m trying so hard not to buy a KS7 or a KSG as my first shotgun xd
my KSG ran mini shells all day long with no problem. I hope it's just an operator issue on the KS7 cause I'd love to load that thing up with them
Got mine last April before things really got crazy. It loves the Aguila and Federal mini shells (slugs) as well as 2 3/4” shells. No problems whatsoever.
I noticed while taking it apart(I had one hell of a hard time to put it back together. Feels like it's going to break) but the finger that holds the shells into the chamber is connected to another finger to the left of it via a small rod. That rod seems to be coming out of the shell holder finger making it not extract the shells. Maybe it's just me or maybe it's not a problem when it's all together. But make sure its fully assembled before you go to shoot it. I see a recall or two in the future for this gun. But I'll still be keeping it.
Had to send mine back, bad double feeding issue. Just got it returned today. It seems to cycle fine now with snap caps, still need to range test. here's what was fixed according to the repair order:
- Replaced grip assembly with updated action lock installed
- updated ctg outer, ctg spring and actuator bar
- serviced chamber
- adjusted swedge
- inspected and test fired with no malfunction
Thanks for sharing this. I actually haven't had mine out again but it's good to hear that Kel Tec is trying to do right by you. As with many new models teething issues sometimes occur.
Exact same issue, got it back in under 2 weeks with the same list of issues and replacement parts, working a dream now. I really like KelTecs guns, but I swear they send them out 1st gen and let the customers find the bugs...
Way more interested in this than the KSG. I dont need that many rounds and the size and weight for this is a draw.
The weight is a gift and a curse in my opinion. The weight, length, and width make it compact enough to serve as an awesome truck gun, pack gun, lots of options. That said the weight means you really feel the full power shells. Fair tradeoff though, and the benefits greatly outweigh the negatives. Thanks for watching!
looks like it kicks twice as much as the KSG
@Frank Castle It's less wide, looks sleek without feeling blocky, the reduced bulk is really an all-round positive while the tube can still hold 7 shells.
Reliability issues will get ironed out trough the years as usual of Kel-Tec and likely they're going to make longer versions that'll add some weight and have the end of the barrel farther away from your hand.
Great informative video, thank you. My 10 year old grandson wants to get one of these. Him being so light weight, he does shoot alot, do you think light load dove shells would run thru this?
Thank you for the kind words. I don't see why they wouldn't, I would grab a box for testing just to make sure before you put an order in for bulk.
Awesome that he likes to shoot
@@GunsGunsAndMoreGunsReviews will do. Yes, he likes to shoot. I have to keep working to supply him with cartridges and shells. But at least I know where he is and what he's doing. Small price to pay for that
Plasma rifle in a 40 watt range?
Hey , just what you see pal lol
@@GunsGunsAndMoreGunsReviews 💥 boom haha
I had quite a few light primer strikes using nsi #6 high brass as well. It seems to love le133 federal buck. Home defense? No, needs some refinement. Tons of fun? Yes!
This thing feels tailor made for the mini shells
Yeah it really doesn't like the minishells, unfortunately. I wonder if they are gonna try to fix that in future runs
@I Smash Back I've seen multiple people cycle mini shells in it just fine. Maybe you got a lemon or one of the iffy early ones?
I did the fluff and buff. 100% with standard, aguila, and federal shorty shells. The fluff and buff was done before any shots were fired so I can't speak to it. I love mine.
@@Bibitybopitybacon thanks I just got mine & ordering my minis now due to how many I can load
Dam i want one of these. They would be legal in New Zealand with a slightly longer barrel and limited to 6 rounds.
had mine for a about a week now and it jams quite a bit. i did not clean or lube it either when i first fired it. I've been using different ammo but jams still, sometimes it cycles great, kinda frustrating. but i just cleaned and lubed it just got to take it out again and see if it improves. thanks for the vid though!
Arnett Tafoya mine broke after 6 rounds. I’m not surprised as 3 out of the 4 kel tec products I’ve purchased have failed
@@JoshuaDomoslai , sorry to hear that. i know for sure the wnchester universal game and target 2 3/4" 1 1/8oz 7 1/2" shot really suck dont use em they jam all day!
The M 16 was viewed as a toy at first remember .

@@Deeceesadventures that shit was lego's hahaha
Composite is the Future, I've come to expect it cause it is pretty strong stuff, but some things on guns should remain metal or aluminum , could you imagine if the foregrip n pistol grip end were made of aluminum ,I wouldn't mind paying a little more for it if it was....
Totally Agree
wickedness via 12 g ...thx 4 the video...spot on evaluation
I wanna see what it looks like without the carry handle and pic rail on top
Michael Bindhammer ua-cam.com/video/dh9AguVzdP8/v-deo.html
Mine broke after 6 rounds. Those little things that are in front of the magazine tube follower 1 of them broke and now the rounds won’t come out of the mag tube when you pump it
That is really unfortunate to hear. I hope that Kel Tec makes it right for you.
Great review! Thank you and please keep doing that!
Thanks for watching!
I'm curious on how rock salt rounds would work with this?
Im sure they would do just fine
Maybe those 12 pellet rounds are good for blasting multiple targets in one shot?
Possibly, but man are they brutal to shoot.
Weighs nothing is a good thing... until you feel the recoil.
Anyone know where I can pick one of these up??? I know the full release don’t come out until may I know they release only so many of them
I think until May it's kind of a crap shoot. I got mine from John at JRK Enterprises. The link to his website is in the video description.
Quick question. I'm in Illinois too. What range was this at that allowed you to shoot buckshot? Places near me say slugs only. Thanks.
When I have to shoot indoors I typically go to On Target in Crystal Lake.
Subscribed as soon as you said you're from that area - I miss it a lot!
Awesome =) , thanks for the Sub . I love it here , if they stopped taxing us to death I think droves would move here lol
@@GunsGunsAndMoreGunsReviews many things about our state is like that, for instance I think Chicago has serious potential to be the best city in the country but. Well you know. God bless SF
The mini shells are great but the powder is very dirty, so you will be cleaning it more often.
I'm really looking to buy this gun.
However I passed on the KSG because of the rail switch. And holding this gun in the store I don't mind adding weight for a stronger frame. But the failed feed problem is a deal breaker.
Those mini shells can I use that in a inside range ?? I just bought this gun
I would definitely check the rules of your local indoor range for the usage of shot types. Some indoor ranges only allow buckshot or slugs, the mini shells we were shooting are a combination of buckshot and birdshot.
My local range will let you shoot the slugs but that’s it.i run them through my 500 with an adapter there very pleasant to shoot but the adapter will come lose as you shoot
Can you shoot breneke black magic magnum slugs from the ks7
Got mine today for $429! Shipping to my FFL. Should have it by Friday b
You got an awesome price on it!
Where did you snatch it for $429??
@@Willypete8932 TSS Warehouse. It wasn't even listed on their site at the time. I buy from them often and gave them a call really not expecting them to have it. They literally got it in that morning and didn't have time to even put it on their website. Got lucky.
Thanks for getting back to me on that. Love my ksg you feel like the ks7 is a good one to add to the collection?
Dylan Andrews I'd hold off. I finally had a chance to fire it today and had some issues. Firing pin wasn't hitting slug hard enough to fire. Had a feeding issue as well. Keltec is sending me a return label to have it looked at on Monday. I'm shipping it out to them so they can see what is the matter.
It would be nice if they licensed the design to a reputable manufacturer who could make one with more metal and better reliability.
Kel Tec has a good track record of listening to criticism and fixing things , maybe that will be in the ks7 v2
The KSG also started out being a failure fest but if you get one now they'll run as reliably as any other shotgun does (as long as you don't short stroke).
Did a pic rail come with it?
It did not, just the sci-fi looking carry handle. That's not to say that there isn't or wont be an option to but with the rail instead of the Carry handle. It just wasn't an option for me.
The top rail from the KSG fits the KS7.
Does anyone know if ksg frame pins are interchangeable with the KS7 frame pins?? I have a ks7 and want to get a swivel qd sling pin that is only sold for ksg atm.
triston murray KSG frame pins are a bit longer, same diameter though
@@colinwhite1997 thanks! They don't match... I actually did some research and it looks like any ks7 part that is shared by the ksg is indicated by "ksgXXX" in the part number. The parts are listed in the exploded view in the KS7 manual and quite a few a shared, but not the pins sadly.
I’ve had no problem with mine
Do the ejecting shells hit you on the wrist like the original KSG? I know both MAC and Hickok45 had that issue. Thanks
If they did I didn't notice. I have met Tim and he is about a foot taller than me, and I know Hickock is very tall also. Could be an issue for shooters with longer arms?
I never had a problem with the ejection with my KSG. But I'm also 6'1 so my reach my be a factor
Can I put a foregrip on it? It doesn't look like it has a rail for one.
Yeah there is no way for now to attach a fore grip.
@@hishinator ah bummer. Thanks for the answer though. I'm trying to decide between this and the tristar krx.
I'm sure Kel-Tec or someone will make a railed replacement foregrip or at least one with a foregrip molded (I'd like one of the ones with a light/laser combo built in on it, myself).
Where did you get one?
I got this one through John at JRK Enterprises. A link to his website is in the video Description.
Thanks for the info on this gun . Im a sucker for it's scifi looks .. will most likely get it. What is mini shell capacity..?
Its 11 or 12, cant remember if I loaded 10 in the tube +1 or 11 in the tube.
@@GunsGunsAndMoreGunsReviews awesome thanks for the reply . Your the only video I have found doing a non shot show table top review on this gun. Very thorough , appreciate the work !
@@SniperZaku Thanks man. We are pretty fortunate that the guy who handles our transfers is able to get a hold of some really cool stuff. There really arent many of these out in the wild yet. I appreciate the sub and thanks for watching!
@The Rittenhouse Precedent pockets picked? $500? Ok fud
@The Rittenhouse Precedent nah your right don’t buy a gun you like the look of cause you could save 50 bucks an get a totally not corporate Remington or mossberg 🙄 makes sense
Seems very easy to short stroke which can make you lose the fight during a defensive scenario.
You're absolutely correct. This gun will remain in the novelty section of the safe until the kinks get ironed out. Thanks for watching!
Usually the problem with Kel Tec bullpups is short stroking the rounds. Kel tec says to really train with it and slam that pump back
It’s sucks they still ate sold out in my area
From what I understand Kel-Tec isnt going to get these into full production and shipping in large numbers until May.
I bought one and I think it's an awesome concept for a shotgun. Put that little finger Ripper in the back of the gun when you go to load it has got to go. I am going to dremel mine down and keep the shotgun.
I heard someone say the polymer on this model is of lesser quality than the standard KSG. Is that true? I'm going to go out on a limb and say that individual was a fool, and one of those haters of Kel-Tec.
I dont have q lot of firsthand experience with the KSG, but the only thing that feels cheap is the forend (pump) which I mention in the video. I would think that Kel-Tec wouldn't build a lighter gun, with inferior materials, just due to the risk of catastrophic failures alone.
I'm a former quality control engineer that did plastics. I've had both the ksg and currently own a KS-7. It's the same plastic. No company is going to go thru the hassle of the change out.
Hey Ronin, would you recommend a recent made KS7 for home defense? Is it ready yet? Thanks
@@donsimons9810 thanks for the question. Like with anything you generally have a sample of one so I speak from there. Looking at the build quality with a critical eye myself and an trusted and valued engineering friend checked it out. The build is good and uses the Ithaca system. My buddy smoothed some some areas such was the chamber, and it's been 100%. I have mine setup as a home defense gun replacing my tac-14. If you can find one I think the KS-7 has it's place.
@@TNRonin Thanks for the reply. When you say smoothed some areas, you mean sanding? What setup did he use to do that? Sorry, I'm a novice
No offense, and it's no big deal if you don't have a lot of shotgun experience (most people don't like shooting them a lot), but, is this the first time you've noticed the wad travels with the pattern? I'm an LEO instructor, by the way, I'm not just talking out of my ass. It's not as common with fully captured wadding at the range you're shooting at (25 yards) because the sabot-like cup on the wad slows it down like a drag-stabilizer on a free-fall bomb. A short-cup wad (like on the Winchester mil-spec loads) will keep going. How far the wad travels depends on the material it's made of. At close range, within 15 yards, you'll get wad penetration just about every time. Most often it'll be two separate holes. In fact, it might actually be kind of interesting to place a large wall of paper or thin cardboard out to 25 yards and see how far the deviation is for the wads on a variety of shotshells. The reason being that in-home defense range, the wad is more like a secondary frag and can cause penetration injuries up close. It would be worthwhile to show people the unpredictability of it. The wad can even penetrate some interior grade drywall. Actually, using a sheet of 3/8 inch drywall wouldn't be a bad backstop for the test.
How did you make the purchase? I want to pick one up asap, if i could get it before may would be amazing
Veraqul check gun broker. I bought mine there from a vendor 2 months ago from an early shipment. Although it broke after 6 rounds
@@JoshuaDomoslai how so

I paid under $500, however like with anything else the demand is going to mostly drive the price either up or down.

@@bobbyb608 WTF? Where did you buy it at?
Out of curiosity did you try any rifled slugs?
I did not, definitely should do a follow up with slugs!
I shot some slugs out of it and they were only 2 3/4 and it’s like getting punched in the arm. Did not want to shoot my 3” after that.
Hey from Aurora!
Try it with 3" #1 24 pellet Buckshot!
That's going to be a hard pass from me. If I can find someone nutty enough to do it I'll be sure to film and post it! Thanks for watching!
@@GunsGunsAndMoreGunsReviews Il be the test dummy :P I have a whole case of 3" #1Buck, I really want to try that shotgun out
@@WraithChornobyl if you live a reasonable distance from either the Elgin area, Illinois or Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin we might be able to make that work.
dont use winchester game and target universal shotshells, 20 bucks at walmart they jam. the 2 3/4" 1 1/8oz 7 1/2 shot 1200 velocity. no good in the ks7
Winchester universal would jam in an old ass remington pump i had as well only round that would usually failure to extract
Language accepted!
You weren’t short-stroking. The failure to feed seems to be a common theme with most, if not all of the reviews I have seen on the KS7. Really wanted one for closet defense gun but appears too unreliable
That's incredibly unfortunate. I really hope these issues can be worked out. These little shotguns have a lot of potential.
Just wait for the gen 2 when they fix all the issues
It's too short because you're not standing right. Feet are supposed to be shoulder width apart parallel to each other NOT bladed like you're throwing a punch. That way you can put the stock directly on the center of your chest
I love JRK! I'm def going to see if he can get me one
Come on apes, do you want to live forever?
Would you like to know more...
I wish to god they would make a handle like that for the KSG!
I'd say if you're gonna review a new gun, then you should clean it, and give it the best opportunity to shine that it deserves. Don't understand the reviews that say, I didn't clean it, research it/or understated it's characteristics at all. Then wonder why it's not performing to your random expectations!?
You shouldn't be using mini shells for home defense. My KS7 runs flawlessly.
Why not?
I don’t like that big pulse rifle handle. Is it a man bag too?
Love the video, good info in it... but, bro. TURN DOWN YOUR GAIN. You're causing feedback in everyone's speakers.
Ask for an I'd play Chris brown Valentine Jules need your helps bumpfire
I want to say I appreciate what you are doing but this review is wayyyy to wordy.
I talk a lot. It's both a gift and a curse.
other then taking 20 mins to load 7 shells because of the weird teeth they have over the follower the gun is amazing
Dude, it's a pound lighter than the KSG.🤷♂️
Pounds = Pain
Like the old saying says
Good home defense just rack that thing and the bad guy will run away
Gun looks great but it perfoms like a piece of shit
So… basically it’s an unreliable shotgun. Lol. Expected from keltec. These idiots gotta get a new ceo or something.
Boring.
