[Ruined Castle - Caitlin Mulholland] The sunlight streams through the shattered corridors of the castle. You imagine that it was a sight to behold during its prime. The dulled carvings along the doorways and columns are enough to give that away, even if the art and furniture are stripped away from the building. Any obviously placed riches were stolen-or liberated as some might say-a long time ago when the family was ousted. Fortunately, you’re looking for something a little less public. Crumbling holes in the walls reveal what were probably once secret passages, though now they’re open for all to see. The only thing preventing outsiders from venturing into the heart of the castle is the destroyed staircase. The stones have crumbled away, though you can’t tell if the source of this decay is the natural consequence of no upkeep or the result of some untold strength the invaders used when attacking. The history of the destruction is no matter to you. Knowing it wouldn’t make climbing down any less of an annoyance. You tie off your rope around a pillar and toss the end down the hole. A brief worry flashes through your mind when you see yet another rat scurry across the hall. Would they start chewing on the rope while you’re climbing? Would they cause the rope to snap while you’re searching the building, entombing you within? Clenching your eyes shut, you start belaying down the passage. Your employers at the market don’t pay you to let fear screw with your head. You shove against the crumbing marble with your feet as you keep your mind focused on the prize hiding within these walls. [Long Gone - MisterYeetus] I stepped over the threshold and into the dusty keep. The place was ancient, full of forgotten memories. A castle that once housed some noble family was now the dwelling for scavenging rats and spinning spiders. I breathed in the air, and felt the heaviness of it in my lungs. I could taste the abandonment. I kept walking. My footsteps echoed along the lonely corridors as I walked, and peered through broken doors and into dilapidated rooms. Empty save for destroyed furniture and the nests of rodents. I continued along, looking into every room. Shredded banners that once hung high and proud now covered the long dining table. I sniffed the air, as if trying to smell the feasts that were served here, but all I could smell was the thick dust, and broken dreams. The massive oak doors still stood, like two imposing guardians. The hinges rusted, the wood splintered, but they still stood, tall and proud. I pushed them open, and entered the room beyond. The red velvet carpet was threadbare, and ruined. The high vaulted ceiling had collapsed, scattering glass and rubble everywhere. But the throne stayed untouched. Its magnificence was apparent, even in the dim light. It shone, a symbol of power and justice. The man sitting in it did not shine. The bones of the former lay still, crooked in his chair. I looked, and it was a long while before I breathed again. I turned from the skeleton, and nodded to myself. The memories, happiness, hope for the future were long gone. Nothing but food for beasts. 📌 Here's another ambience for your RPG sessions or for your projects, a ruined castle, with rats, a small breeze and eerie drones, and many others. You can expect many more ambient creations like this one! You need a special ambience for your RPG sessions ? Just ask, and I create it !
Exploring the old fortress, I note a second gatehouse on the extreme end of the inner wall, so that an attacking army would have to turn right and run for it across the outer ward at a greater distance, making them more vulnerable to arrows and spears from the defenders on both walls. Passing through this gatehouse, I see what must be the main hall on the far side of the inner ward, with the inner curtain wall connecting to it and a tall, imposing watchtower rising from the place where the wall and the keep meet, along with other towers. A smaller extension that is clearly meant to be the chapel juts out from the side of the Great Hall, and a few other buildings lie in differing states of ruin along the walls of the inner ward. I find that most of the castle is still remarkably intact for its age, save for one section of wall that is crumbling into ruin, a few other areas where some wood work has gone to rubble and a spot or two of slightly derelict masonry; yet the towers and walls are lonely for sentries, and no light from candle or torch is seen from the windows of the main hall. The impressive landmark has become an empty shell, a mere echo of the thing it used to be, silent now save for the rats, bats, and other creatures flying and scurrying through its outer and inner wards and the wind that howls through the battlements.
could be how the few Roman legion officers that actually was worth ther salt felt in the western empires first days of decline ...when it abandoned england and scraped for soldiers left and right to hold onto european heart lands...
Possibly. Though what I was going for here was more like a late 13th Century concentric castle, which is why I referenced both an outer and an inner wall.

Oh, trust me; 13th Century castles were abandoned and fell into ruin. For examples, look at the castles built in Wales by Edward I. In those cases, the castles have all been reduced to impressive but unused (except as tourist attractions and historical sites) landmarks even as the towns built in their shadows grew and thrived.

The medallions in our hearts are hyperactive, disembodied voices scream in the howling drafts, and talons scuttle on stone in a long abandoned castle whose supplies of food expired decades ago. The walls and ceilings may collapse at any time; so we avoid explosions and kinetic attacks. We burn spectre oil in our torches in order to keep the spirits at bay, we apply spectre oil to our silver weapons and apply other oils to our other weapons. We opt to use flash bombs and incendiary attacks. There are neither remains of people nor animals despite the plethora of rotting wooden furniture and oxidizing metal artifacts. The archives are burned except for baby skin journals that are hidden in chests and jars. In dried blood and by the light of blessed candles, the journals describe unethical experiments, torture, murder, and other atrocities that make our growling stomachs churn until we force ourselves to eat pieces of dried fruit, nuts, and dried meat to suppress the pain. Necrophages, insectoids, and bandits are of little concern due to biting cold and lack of food, but spirits and threats of unknown creatures keep all of us on guard as we grip our weapons tightly for dear life as we set up camp as a severe storm approaches. Even though our lamps burn hours worth of spectre oil and we are covered in thick wool, the disembodied screams and tapestries of demons ensure that sleep will not be easy.

Sometimes the spirits of the dead are nothing more than silent, impartial observers who watch the living without intervention for good or ill, and thus are never detected. If there are ghosts here, that must be the kind of ghosts they are.

If he did, let's hope the necromancers don't get to him. That would stir the masses for sure. Maybe raise some controversy.
