How to clean an A/C evaporator on 7.3 diesel

  • This video shows how to gain access to the evaporator coil in order to clean it. After nearly 2 decades of gathering dirt and debris, it was definitely time. This will decrease the A/C temperature, increase air flow and allow for the air to get to the desired temperature quicker. The best part is, it is free.

    I have done this on all my trucks, especially if you have the engine out. Having worked on refrigeration and HVAC equipment for many years, I use foaming coil cleaner for the evaporator and the condenser. Typically the chemical is diluted 10:1 for evaporators, and 3:1 for condensers. They do make different chemicals for each, but why buy 2 gallons when you can mix according to what you are doing. Wet the coil with water, spray the chemical with a pump up sprayer. Let the foaming action push debris from the coils and rinse. It is best to rinse from the engine side towards the blower to push the debris back out the way it came. Brush and repeat until the rinse comes out clean. A typical cleaning will mean more airflow which raises the evaporator temperature and offsets the lower temperatures that the increased surface area produces. So I think your results were due to having a cleaner vehicle. Remember to clean the condenser coil on your home AC unit twice a year also. Your electric provider will NOT thank you!

    After watching your video, I did this on my 2001 F350. Thank you so much for putting the information out there. I bought my truck used with over 300,000 miles and it had been a road maintenance vehicle of sorts... Tons of dirt road driving. My coil was packed full and not allowing any air flow.

      @@alfaromeo6985 I performed this rare maintenance task back in 2017 when I created the video, but I believe it took about the same time as it did for Front Line finish carpentry. I was filming, taking notes and pictures too though, so maybe 2 - 3 hours for anyone not distracted.

    Fantastic Video! I watched this then decided to go take a crack at it. It really wasn't bad but those 3 bolts on the bottom of the housing are a PITA! Outside of that, I just stuffed some rags into the blower holes and the vents and sprayed the coils out for a while. So much crud came out of there it was amazing. Now I can feel the cool air in cab in the So UT heat so much better. Videos like this are invaluable to people like us, thank you for taking the time!

    That was super helpful. On an excursion 7.3l with rear air the cover will come out. You have to disconnect the heater hose going to the T on the rear firewall. Gonna loose some coolant.You have to remove the clamp bolt under the air box holding the coolant lines. I had to take the 4 metal clips off the accumualtor its just s plastic cover, only take the front half off, this is so I could get to the rear screw on Right. He's got that wrench in the video which I do the have. So removing the four metal clips made access much easy. You can not lift the coil out like he did but you can get it high enough and slight cocked on a 30 degree angle with something wedged under the lines and resting on the existing box.. I cleaned my with evaporator cleaner with evaporator cleaner from HVAC store. Simple green would work too. I used a pump sprayer and hosed both side down let sit 5 mins repeat and did 2x's. First time some nasty crap was coming out. You can get to the coil on the engine side no problem. You have to really yank the cover forward and push up on the ac lines. His video is correct he just not have the rear ac. So that was a chore.... It will come out, but no gentle. It went back in super easy with a good love tap.Iwent back in with a water saver wand (google it) that we use for cleaning coils in hvac. It worked perfect to get in and wash the evaporator coil both inner and outer. Wipe any excessive water where the blower goes in. Reverse order and your good. I did not take the inner wheel well out. I was able to get screws out with the help from this video of where they would be. Took me about 4.5 hours. Not to hard, Thanks for putting this out there. It was spot on!!!

      A good friend of mine has a 2000 7.3L Excursion and he loves that thing. He tows his travel trailer all over the place with it.
      I was not aware of the difference in the Excursion when compared to the Super Duty, but I thank you for elaborating on them and sharing your insight and experience with the UA-cam community.

    Thanks for posting this video. I was getting ready to clean mine today, and your video popped up. Mine is a 2000 F350. The previous owner lived on a dirt road, so mine is probably packed worse than yours. You need to do a video on how you got your engine bay so dam clean! That thing looks amazing!

      Thanks for the compliment on the video and engine bay. TLC is all I do to clean the engine bay. We have to take care of our things because we live on a budget and our things have to last us. I prefer when the engine is clean as it allows me to spot something that is not right faster.

    I did a short video on this before I saw yours. You did a better production than I did. There us one more thing. Because of the quick disconnect fittings you are able to rotate the core horizontal if you lift it up and out. Great job

      I only created the video in order to augment the written instructions provided by those I gave credit to at the beginning of the video. I am glad you also created a video as this is a maintenance task that is often overlooked. Since our trucks don't have cabin air filters, the maintenance is a bit more involved than replacing a filter cartridge. Thanks for the addition to the instructions and I hope many people find your video helpful.

    That is a very clean truck there! Very nice. I have a 00' 7.3 and have been noticing a musty smell especially when I first start the truck with the A/C. My truck has had a fairly easy 235,000km but I would like to do this to know that I have my system running at peak efficiency. Thanks for the pointers.

    I just purchased a 2000 f250 6.8L v10. My A/C is blowing at 68-70° i charged the system it is full. no visibil leaks. I'm really hoping that it can be an easy cleaning and no replacement parts. I appreciate this video. very detailed. 👌

      Your welcome, I would also check the condenser coil on the front of the truck for bugs and debris. Not only from the front, but if you can see the rear (toward the cab) of the condenser coil as well to make sure it is clear. I have seen where there was a small blanket of debris blocking air flow.

    Hats off to u sir , very good video , straight to the point , professional and specific , it's known to be the Achilles heel of Ford Ac systems , it's a really bad engineering design from scratch , I guess they wanted to be able to keep us coming to their dealers , all cus they couldn't find a way to add a basic Ac Filter , 7.3 L are great engines thou.

    My 2002 only has 10 bolts on evaporator housing. And my dryer housing bracket does not come off. Still a great video. For my first time doing this!

      @@LivingOurDream/ Jday, I was watching another UA-cam video a ford tech made. It was also about cleaning the Evaporator and unclogging the drainage hole. He recommended installing a cabin filter and which filter number fits

      @@lonniefreeman4278 The Super Duty trucks of this era did not come with a cabin filter and did not have an option for a cabin filter. I believe the Excursion had a cabin filter, which can be retro-fit to the Super Duty trucks. Based on what I have read on FTE (www.ford-trucks.com/forums/forum31/) the cabin filter is not worth the effort and price in the Super Duty trucks.
      Regarding finding the part number for the filter and housing, try going to Rock Auto and searching for parts for a 7.3L PSD Excursion.

    Nice to see how to replace the Fan Housing. I have no clue how they broke the mounting face of the fan housing... But it's just flopping around. And the core is clogged solid with grass and weeds..

    Im Planning now through this awesome well done video to finnaly attemp the clean out..Battleing Cancer and Need my cab cool ...Seems we have the same Truck..mines a 2002 as you see in my circle gif.....Ive had the truck for 3 years now and this has been the exact thing I also had come to determine...Im able to have the cab Limo grade tint with ceramic film ....works awesome (Tinteffect company online) cuts them to exact sizes for Ford F series, with awesome CS...but my AC just wont get Ice cold when its real hot with good guage reading and all other relays and stuff are ok...I will post when im done....again Thanks.
    Edit..I see the comments for time and for cleaners used...simple green is ok? and to "back spray" or "reverse clean" the gunk piled in the fins in the direction it went in, is also key, this i know.

      I'm sorry to hear about your diagnosis and hope your journey to good health is easy on you and your loved ones.
      Cleaning the evaporator coil may not get you what you want from the AC, but it cannot hurt to try and is something that needs to be done after 20 years of being on the road. I used Simple Green as it is a biodegradable (safe to run into the ground) product that works well as a cleaner and degreaser. Reverse spraying is OK too as there is a drain at the bottom of the box that will allow water run off out and onto the ground.

      @@sgtdog3839 Cleaning the evaporator coil did in fact allow the AC to be severl degrees cooler, but the air flow out of the blower also increased. I hope you have similar or better results with your AC system.

    Living our dream, thank you for the great video. Watching the video is going to save me so much time. That is a beautiful truck and cleanest motor bay I've seen in a while. Besides the 5.9 12 valve cummins, the 7.3 international is one of the best diesel engines and if taken care of will run 600k miles. My cousin has a 99 f350 that he purchased new. It has almost 500k and going strong

      TX NM, I apologize for the delay in answering your question. Because you posted under the reply section for Travis Thompson, I didn't receive a notification about your question.
      The A/C temperature coming out of the center vents for me went down a few degrees after cleaning the evaporator coil. Although, it is usually around 58 degrees, where as others are near 50 degrees. I think I may have some condensation in my lines, but do not plan to have the system evacuated again unless the truck is in the shop for another reason.

    All I did was disassemble enough to remove the blower motor. Then I used a squirt bottle and a brush to clean all the dirt and dog hair out that I could reach on the evap coils. My A/C went from non-functioning to blowing so strong and cold I can barely have it on full blast for very long!!!!

      Good to hear you did not have to take the entire cover off. That was not the case in my situation and the cover needed to be removed in order to properly clean the coil. I hope the coil is still working well for you now that we are back in the heat of things.

    Thanks for the video. This is the only one I've found where someone actually shows how to access the evaporator. Do you know if it is much different on a 6.0?

      Your welcome. It really was a worth while job to accomplish. As for the 6.0, I don't know for sure if it is the same. I looked at some pictures of the engine bay on Google images and it appears to be the same, or pretty close to it. The housing for the evaporator looks the same, just that some of the connections and hoses might route a bit differently. If you get the job done on the 6.0, post back here with how it went and how close the 7.3 is to it for anyone else curious about the similarities.

      did you find the process to be the same? I am looking at doing this with my 6.0. I think it is freezing over after long periods of running, so cleaning it out seem like a good place to start.

      That is actually just a 2x2 hat pin that I bought on eBay a while back. I ended up selling that Y-pipe when I upgraded to a Borg Warner T4 turbo.

      Thanks, I try to relay information and procedures that I have learned to others. I have not looked into a DIY cabin filter. There is one that mounts to the outside above the plastic cowl, but I am not interested in that version.

      I had a very noticeable difference in airflow after cleaning and putting everything back together. As you saw from the video, there was quite a bit of debris on/in the coil. Good luck to you.

      @@natelorimer8567 After cleaning the evaporator coil on the truck, I went through and clean the cabin air filters on our other vehicles. A cabin air filter in the truck would have prevented this clogged up evaporator coil, but Ford does some strange things at times.

      You are welcome. Our truck is a 2000 F-250. This is exactly the truck we were looking for and it took it quite a while to find it. We wanted the ZF6 manual transmission because of the reliability that comes with the transmission. The engine is rock solid and will out last just about anything on the road if taken care of.
      I hope you have great results from cleaning the evaporator coil.

    Thanks for the how to. I have fluctuation in temperature between idle and driving but it shows that my AC is charged any ideas? 2000 F250 7.3

      Idle is almost always higher in temperature output simply because there is not air flowing over the condenser in the front of the truck. Cleaning the evaporator coil will help, but nothing can compensate for lack of air movement over the condenser. That is why you see a lot of modern vehicles with electric fans.
      Although, there is no electric fan solution for the 7.3L that does a good enough job to remove the OEM fan.

      I tried that and due to the Super Duty of that era not having a cabin filter, this is not a good method of cleaning the evaporator coil for a lot of truck owners. If you check time stamp 3:52 in the video, you will see the caked on debris, hair and dirt that would not come off by going with the "run water hose over the coil" method. I even tried Simple Green, foaming coil cleaner, an RV water heater wand and a couple of other products. None of them would remove the caked on grime and debris.
      I can see how this would be considered a "hassle" for some, but for others it only takes a short while and there is no financial burden. In todays world of instant gratification, I prefer to work on and fix things myself.
      Have a nice day, and I am glad to hear that a simple stream of water may have resolved 22+ years of grime on your evaporator coil.

      Not unless someone installed it after it left the factory. The SD's from our era did not have a cabin air filter. As I understand it, the Excursion does have a cabin air filter that can be retro-fit into the SD, but I don't know for sure what that involves.

      With the coil separated from the housing, the water from the hose simply drops down toward the ground and drain hole for the coil. The housing opening is easy to avoid spraying water in as longbas you take your time.

      If you are talking about the foaming coil cleaner, yes. I tried that on this evaporator coil before I removed the box and cleaned it the right way. There was just too much debris wedged between the fins of the coil.
      If/when I get back in there via the blower motor and fan I will use foaming coil cleaner as a maintenance task.

      As far as I know, there is only 1 way to add a filter and that is through the cowl. Some people have done this on the FTE forum if I remember correctly. Seems silly to not have a filter for the Super Duty, but I assume a bean counter in the late 90's thought it was a way to cut costs.

      Correct, there is no cabin air filter in these trucks. There is an outside air filter than you can affix to the cowl just below the windshield, but that does not sit well with me.
      The evaporator coil becomes saturated with dust and debris over time. I created this video in 2017, so that was the first time in 17 years the evaporator coil had been cleaned. I am the second owner of the truck and have had it almost 10 years now.
      I have not opened up the case or looked in through the fan housing since 2017 as the A/C is still going strong. I suspect that if I ever need to replace the fan, I will take a good look at the evaporator coil and clean if necessary.

      Yeah my AC is cold. Just doesn’t blow very hard. I’m thinking I can just pull the blower air hose out and water out and put back in. I saw another vehicle where a gentlemen just did that and was fine

      @@capthawkeye170 That might work if the evaporator coil is not too dirty or filled with debris. In my case, a special nozzle on a hose didn't work. A degreaser didn't work, a nylon brush pushed in through the hole didn't work, foaming coil cleaner didn't work. I tried everything before removing the cover, but in the end removing the cover was not a big deal and the A/C coming out of the vents is much stronger. If I only have to do that once every 20 years, I am good with that.

      There was only a minor drop in temperature from what I recall. I want to say it was ~5° at idle and a bit more rolling down the road. But, the temperature of the air coming out of the vents cooled off sooner and was at a high flow rate. Beneficial in my opinion, but my opinion is often different than others.

      Evaporator coil clogged is one, dirty tumbler fan blades is another. I am not an A/C expert by any means, just know what I saw and after it was cleaned it made a difference. You have to remember that the air is being pulled over/through the evaporator coil, so if it is clogged, well I think you get it.

      I would say about 2 to 2.5 hours from start to finish, but only because I wasn't sure about what I was doing. If I had to do it over again, I could have it done in less than 1.5 hours, probably about an hour. Once you see that there really isn't much to it and finding the bolts is the hardest part you will think it is not a big deal at all. Since I show the bolt locations and the steps in the video, you will find the cleaning process quite easy.
      My A/C is much colder this year than it was last year before cleaning the evaporator coil. Also, I am confident that the drain for the coil is clean and free flowing so there will not be any leaks in the cabin.

      No, the refrigerant system is not broken or and the freon is not vented or collected. This is simply a cleaning procedure with no additional steps required.

    Why you not make some new the installation pipe nozzle spray for permanently get closer to cleaner the evaporator make it easy.. i think this is good idea next clean up...

      Most of the evaporator coil is NOT accessible and the case must be opened to gain access to it. Especially when the fins are caked with dirt, hair and debris, there is no rinsing that stuff off, not in my experience anyway.
      With the RV water heater cleaning nozzle, I might be able to rinse the evaporator coil since I performed a deep clean, but at a deep clean interval of every 20 years, I am not worried about it.

    Where did you get the IH decals for the hood and spider manifold? I have 2002 7.3 international I rebuilt the top and front of my 7.3 Turbo charger through to the harmonic balancer. All Painted new parts. I'd like to have the decals. Thanks. I'm changing out the evaporator now. Very good video! Thanks!

      Larry, the decal on the spider is actually a hat pin that was either 1.5" or 2" square. I simply removed the prongs from the pin and used epoxy to hold the pin on the spider. Since I had already removed the solenoid from the spider, the IH pin finished the spider off nicely I think.
      As for the hood decal, I think you are talking about the one in the center of the grille that replaced the Ford oval. Just like the IH pin on the spider, I bought both of them on eBay years ago.
      The one for the grille came with a matching decal for the Ford oval on the tailgate as well.

    evaporators are only $50, replacing it with a new one would be a better option since Evaporators are usually the first to spring a leak, and change the orifice while you are at it

      Perhaps that is the best course of action for someone that has access to a refrigerant re-claimer, vacuum pump, manifold/gauges and the proper tools to do so. But, for 99% of the people out there that have basic tools and a garden hose, this is a great maintenance item.
      The way I see this is like transmission fluid change... You can replace the entire transmission at 50,000 miles, or you can change the fluid and roll on down the road until major service is required.

      Had a similar problem on my "02. Had to remove several discs on the compressor clutch.

      I am sure you solved the issue by now, but based on your description I would say Liberal Nemisis is spot on. The clutch pack on the A/C compressor can wear out and need to be reshimmed. I had to do this to my A/C compressor clutch discs a while back and now they are back to within specification and working well.
      You can also buy a new clutch pack that simply bolts on and no leaking of Freon takes place.

      I used a variety of tools like swivels and 1/8" ratchet and swivel head wrenches as seen in the video. some of the bolts are difficult to reach, but you can get them.

    I just replaced my evaporator core and the new one has air blowing out of it after I stalled it. I can feel it coming out the top of the box. Is that normal?

      Usually this means there is a rubber gasket that goes in between where the two pieces of the hvac box goes togethor. You need to replace this gasket or make a new one one of a piece weather stripping.

    I’m having a problem where every few months my ac system seems to lose the refrigerant (due to a suspected leak) hence not cooling the cab. Today I have found that I have a cold air pressure coming from out of the evap box/assembly on the most forward line. I’m guessing this is my leak but looking for a second opinion. thanks to anyone with help

      Look for oily residue on any/all of the a/c hoses and components. Service ports usually leak at the schrader valves. Every AC has oil that escapes with the freeon where there's a leak. When the system is serviced they should inject a very small amount of dye for locating leaks easily. Look for greenish yellow oily residue and you'll find your leak.

      It very well could be! Also check the shims on the AC compressor clutch to make sure the clutch is close enough to engage.

    I love my 2004 F350 and Ford trucks but Ford needs to step it up a add a five dollar filter to the blower system on their trucks! Shit GM has had a filter on their blower system since 1995

      Ford has some problems but typically they are much more well built than a Chevy. Chevy's oil filters have been upside down since they quit using the small block. Talk about a pain!!

      @@Richard5873 They wanted $200 for inspection and $200 to add a pound of freon. I said I wasn't going to pay them cause I paid for a diagnosis and they found nothing and it obviously isn't cooling. In the end I got out of there not paying and them thinking I would come back in a few days. Nope. So I bought a new evap took it to an a/c place told them I wanted it replaced- the old one caked in dirt and hair the dye would never dripped to the ground but there was dye stuck in the dirt. Later after fixing the turbo hoses blew off cause the dumbasses didnt put them on proper. See why I hate mechanics.....XD

      Although the dealer is supposed to be the expert on the vehicle, they are human and have several platforms to be familiar with too. I don't take anything to the dealer, unless that is the last resort.
      Even then, I do what I can to resolve the issue wherever and whatever that may be.

      The evaportor was not removed, only the plastic cover was removed. If the evaporator had been removed, the system would have leaked the refrigerant out and need to be vacuumed and refilled.
      The plastic cover was removed in an effort to fully clean the coil and in my opinion, it worked well.

      I agree with you that it seems daunting at times. Although, my truck is paid for and when it needs parts or maintenance, it is not going to cost me the bank note of a new truck and definitely not every month.
      These are dinosaurs, but I love mine and will keep it as long as I am able.

    Ok,for the love of god. What is the smoke fueled by? It's not coolant it can burn your truck down. 2nd Ford now doing it. I can make it stop. So can this guy. But what the heck is burning.always smells the same. Looks the same. Unfamiliar smell. Anybody? Stressed the blower motor, bout all I can think of.

      PhillipJoe, I'm sorry, but I am at a loss for what "smoke" you are referring to.
      Does the smoke have an electrical fire smell?
      It could be the "blower motor resistor" next to the evaporator coil. This part tends to rust and need replacing once in a while. It could be the blower motor itself, but when motors burn up they tend to stop working altogether. It could be the pins inside the connector to the blower motor, but again these tend to stop conducting and the blower motor stops.
      It could be something completely unrelated like an oil leak burning off on the manifold. It could be the starter relay if you have an early model 7.3L.
      I don't know how else to try and help you, I apologize for that. Good luck to you and I hope you find the issue as an electrical fire can be a very, very bad thing.

      We live in north GA and travel the country with our truck towing a 5th wheel. A/C is a necessity here and in places like AZ, ID, etc...
