  • An interview with Virgin Islands-based artist La Vaughn Belle, whose work is on view at Brookfield Place from September 21 through November 13, 2020.
"For Those of Us Who Live at the Shoreline" is a large-scale vinyl artwork that takes its title from the first line of Audre Lorde’s poem, “A litany for survival,” and explores the relationship between the body, landscape, history, and memory. "Chaney series (a topography of reconstruction)" is a collection of eight adjoining paintings that examine the process of reconstructing the fragments - a process that mirrors identity formation for those who are the descendants of the transatlantic slave trade. Both artworks are topographies that deal with fragmentation and hybridization. The work is curated by Kendal Henry for Brookfield Place.

Very articulate, La Vaughn. I love the way you walk us through the process and use resurfacing of historic cheney as an analog. Excellent
