McLaren wasn't in hip hop long, only serving as producer, the music and culture was thriving by the time he got into it and he couldn't claim "founding" status like he did with punk rock. He moved away from it relatively quickly. He moved on to other forms of music, dance, opera, etc. Always trying to be cutting edge. Em on the other hand, rapper, lived and breathed rap and studied the culture. He was a more authentic part of the culture.
