  • BIGGER NUTS, THINNER LATEX, MORE FUHN?
1/2-13 bolt, 2 Nuts with .020" Latex diaphragm
Half way(3:15) through video, hot swapped the Upper Assembly/ displacer
    5/8-11 bolt, 2 nuts, and .008" Diaphragm, measures .0065"
    Future Video Poll at End
    Mount DIY Linear Alternator?
    Insert Borescope Camera?
    Mount Large Pressure/ Vacuum gauge?
I thought the "thicker" diaphragms were giving me more apparent power. I noticed the engine was louder with thinner diaphragm and same 1/2" bolt, so i went to bigger bolt and nuts.

This engine style will be pressurized. I need to TIG braze a top cap and get some pipe fittings. I will pressurize both sides of power membrane.

God has said in the Quran:
{ O mankind, worship your Lord, who created you and those before you, that you may become righteous - ( 2:21 )
[He] who made for you the earth a bed [spread out] and the sky a ceiling and sent down from the sky, rain and brought forth thereby fruits as provision for you. So do not attribute to Allah equals while you know [that there is nothing similar to Him]. ( 2:22 )
And if you are in doubt about what We have sent down upon Our Servant [Muhammad], then produce a surah the like thereof and call upon your witnesses other than Allah, if you should be truthful. ( 2:23 )
But if you do not - and you will never be able to - then fear the Fire, whose fuel is men and stones, prepared for the disbelievers.( 2:24 )
And give good tidings to those who believe and do righteous deeds that they will have gardens [in Paradise] beneath which rivers flow. Whenever they are provided with a provision of fruit therefrom, they will say, "This is what we were provided with before." And it is given to them in likeness. And they will have therein purified spouses, and they will abide therein eternally. ( 2:25 )

Thanks for sharing this. I love it!
Could you please put a ring neodymium magnet on top of the engine and a coil around it. Possibly also an injection machine band heater underneath (cheap on Aliexpress and Banggood).
I'm very interested in how much voltage and amperes it would generate, with different loads (resistor on the coil), and with different heat inputs and temperatures.
It greatly improves the chances to optimize the design when you have measurements.
Can you give a description about the engine? Most of all of the sizes of the parts?
I want to build one myself.

I cut a video over weekend. Literally doing what you requested. I had my Oscope setup. Amp meter. Magnet and coil. It was such low power, I plan to wrap better coil. I think I need to post it any so people don’t waste their time.

Hi @@Digitallyferal , great. Now you can optimize your machine.
Don't let the measurements disappoint you. I knew it would not be a high power engine.
For that you need to change things to let a lot of heat go in at the hot side and a lot of cooling on the cold side, and a fast high pressure engine.
But now you can make great improvements. You can use thin rings on the resonator to tune it for the best power output. There are more things you can change, and find out what works the best.
The world needs different Stirling engines for different circumstances. This looks like a model that is easy to build by people in poor countries, and if you find out what the best proportions are it can be used for led lights or loading cellphone batteries, power a radio, etc..
I build a program to calculate Stirling engines, and I would like to have proportions and test data to make the model in the program also usable to predict what the power and efficiency of this kind of engine will be.

      Hi Harrie,
Main body is 6" long, with inside diameter of 2.85". Everything is based off of 3" sanitary fittings www.mcmaster.com/4322k215
Power Piston holder is 1" long(2 Ferrules brazed together)
      Displacer 5" long, 2.60" dia
      Displacer holder hangs down .4"
Displacer Membrane is .6" below holder( the displacer membrane winds up inside displacer, which is why it still has room to oscillate)
I don't know how to characterize the Spring/Mass of Displacer or Power Piston. Probably need some sort of cheap clamp on accelerometer, I have the oscilloscope.
I can develop a Time and Material cost if you want one. Or find a weldor where you live and pay him.

thanks for posting. good work. here are some things to consider. you may know that a so-called free piston engine is a DO NOTHING. (you Can change it, tho) why is this true. at the 'piston', the Load/force (that would be) 'Work Being Done', has been Replaced with a half-pound of Ballast (and gravity). you may know that a linear pma is NOT efficient. you may know that greatest Overall efficiency Will be achieved, when output motion is Converted, to Rotary; aka a crankshaft/flywheel assembly. consider 'finishing' this energy conversion scheme/transform. the use of speed reduction at the engine output is ESSENTIAL, so that the engine can run in its 'sweet spot', all the time. the load of a (rotary) pma Should, then, be 'matched' to the Power/torque available, after speed reduction. ( reduction is also key to best efficiency, where a low-torque prime mover is used. here, reduction Means a Single stage, of Gearing; maybe, 10:1.) cheers googletranslate

Feel free to subscribe. I'll post an ineffcient linear PMA video in near future. I might do an linear to rotary video as well. Need to buy\find parts for that one though. Need rack\ pinion and sprag clutch.
There are efficient linear PMA designs. Google "complete magnetic flux reversal". Research some companies

      @HvdHaghen 5 років тому +2

David, I don't agree about the inefficiency of the free piston Stirling engine.
Microgen and NASA make free piston Stirling engines that are highly efficient. If you want to make a cheep easy to build engine you can't compete with them, but there is a need for a cheep Stirling engine in countries where there is no electricity, or where the electricity is to expensive, or where there is often no power on the grid.
I liked the idea to build the engine vertical. True, when the power piston goes up you lose the energy to lift the pistons, but you get it back when it goes down again. It works like a flywheel. Its also very practical when you don't need a crankshaft.
The real problem with a free piston engine is how to let the pistons move in a way that gives the maximum power and efficiency. Everything has to be well balanced, or corrected to have the optimum Stirling cycle.
The other problem is how to avoid dead space. Also there is no regenerator. In these engines the cylinder wall is considered to be the regenerator, but that's not very efficient.
On the other hand if you want to make a cheep, easy to build engine, you can't go to far in complicating the design for a little more efficiency. Better to optimize the measures.

@@HvdHaghen bla-bla-bla-bla. define EFFICIENCY. supply some FACTS and/or links to videos. feel FREE to disagree. Until you come to understand the Advantages of Rotary motion/TORQUE energy and conservation of Momentum, the validity of your opinions will continue to be zero. googletranslate

Okay @@daviddavids2884 Here is the Microgen free piston Stirling:
      ua-cam.com/video/Fl8iNXsjsbI/v-deo.html
      and here:
      ua-cam.com/video/Pfz2F4VlPOM/v-deo.html
Here you can see that the efficiency is 26%:
      www.microgen-engine.com/products/engines/
indicated efficiency percentage = 100* net power watts /fuel input watts
overall efficiency percentage = 100* brake power watts/fuel input watts
Here you can see on my site how it is calculated:
      www.jordaan.info/greengasoline/stirling.html
I still want to work half a year on this to make it better.
This is about the NASA free piston Stirling:
      ntrs.nasa.gov/archive/nasa/casi.ntrs.nasa.gov/19920022001.pdf
      25% efficiency.
Well 25% efficiency does not seem much because Philips has made Stirling engines with twice as much efficiency, but there are more design objectives to optimize to.
I see the advantage of rotary motion, but it is a lot easier and less costly to build an engine when you can skip that part and go from the linear movement of the piston to a linear alternator, avoiding the losses that the crankshaft etc. would give.
