- There is a shortage of pediatricians to treat our children when they get sick. According to the Ministry of Health and Welfare, the final application rate for pediatrics this year was 25.5%. The application rate for the second half of the year is even worse. Pediatrics, an essential medical subject, has already been pushed to the brink.

The parents are literally the worst part of working in pediatrics. That’s why I avoid it like the plague
considering that they have multiple suicides of teachers just this year because of abusive parents, im not surprised that this is also happening in the medical field.
This is what happens when academic results and being born into wealth decide your future, coupled with essentially non-existent social mobility. People are conditioned to be cutthroat from young, so when they become adults and eventually parents, they also think that exact same way and repeat the cycle of abuse.
This is a systemic problem with capitalism globally, it's just particularly bad at the extreme ends of very economically developed and undeveloped nations, that have very stunted social progress.

They should massively increase the salaries of this specialists in the pediatric field. If it would become one of the highest paid medical fields it could become more attractive to the med students.

I think the reason why it's on the brink of collapse was because of the low demand for that specialty. South Korea has a very low birth rates, so children are getting less and less and so are the diseases that usually come with babies and children. This makes the demand for pediatrics low, and when the demand is low, so will the supply. That's why new doctors don't apply pediatrics since they think it's not lucrative to specialize in that field. Most new doctors in South Korea generally wants to get to dermatology or aesthetics since the demand there is huge. Some want to get into general surgery, cardiology, or ENT.
If the government is so worried about S. Korea's low birth rate, they need to find more doctors to save the few kids they have.
Theyre more concerned with their noses and double eyelids.
I had the chance to rotate in SNU Pediatrics during my last year in medical school and it was one of the most unforgettable experiences of my career. My mentor during that time was so passionate, she saw around 40 outpatient, this aside from morning rounds and one on one teaching lessons with me as an international student. I hope and pray that more trainees choose pediatrics. I have recently finished my Pedia residency as well, hoping to be as great as the doctors featured here. Kudos!

@@kacchanelkks8187 Hello! I applied directly thru SNU, they have a list of requirements online. They were really helpful, gave me updates on the availability of the rotation that I wanted. They even adjusted my sched since I wasn't free on my initial date of application. Once confirmed, you'll be under the care of one of the professors. I went on rounds with her daily, did clinics and had lectures. It was really fun. The residents were also really nice and helpful 🥰
as paramedics who works in 3rd world coutries i can sort of understand this problem. Most of doctors would go throught 8-10 years before they become specialized ( like general surgery, ENT, eye surgery, internist, etc), but they would go throught another decade of training to become an expert in their field. Most of time during their training, these doctors would spend 70-80% of their life in hospital, and they often underpaid. even normal civil servant would earn more than these doctors in training. The social pressure to provide for your family, and long hours of shift would often discourage doctors. Yes they have passion, but they also have family which sadly often got ignored.
Another sad thing is the truth that many doctors didnt live long enough, because of their lifestyle.

Doctor's family suffer the most. Their child miss their opportunity to spend with parents. Overtime is not good. Good amount of rest is compulsory.
My whole family background is full of doctor even this new generation. But I am not gonna become a doctor. I have my medi xm this Year. But my papa is pressuring me. Me, my sibling, my cousins, we suffered a lot due to this. At first, we also wanted the same situation but I watched my parents, they had to go even they are healthy or not.

As a med student in another country we are facing with the same problem. All med students dream about being plastic surgeon or dermatologist. We lack pediatrics subspecialist. And other very important specialities especially which require surgery.
Goverment need to paid a good amount of money to this low prefered specialities

The Korean health system really needs to sit down and develop a plan for encouraging young doctors in fields where there is scarcity. Why don’t they earmark funds to incentivize and encourage development in these areas?

The first thing they need to do is create a work and life balance. Then stop focusing on just looks only which would reduce the need for plastic surgery. Then work on the bullying and psychological health issues. Having more kids would increase the need for pediatricians.

Because the Korean socialist medical system is only focused on forcing doctors to work more for less, especially for fields like int. medicine, pediatrics, OBGYN etc. People say that they want a better system, but what they really want is doctors working more for less!
This is so sad! There will not be a future with no children. Who will treat any or the remaining kids? They should cut back on the cosmetic doctors and focus more on having more kids and pediatrics.

unfortunately due to the declining number of birth rates in Korea, I can guess that people would rather pick a different medical field other than pediatrics. after all, becoming a doctor takes several years of hard work. if you choose a certain path, you have no choice but to stick with it or else you waste precious time. its also quite expensive to be in school for it. investing on your future on an uncertainty is something a lot cant afford to do. I think this situation can be solved by hiring overseas. there must be a way, there will always be a way.
In Korea many KGs and schools have no more kids, more than half of the newly we'd couples don't want children for financial and social reasons. Many if not most of the young people don't plan to get married. The final result is less and less kids. Pediatricians would have less and less kids in the year to come. So it's a demand and supply issue can't be easily solved. Nor just here but in all fields. More older people who can't work, they get immigrant workers who are not accepted by the people because of race and culture. They expect extinction before the end of the century.
Cosmetic surgery pays well and many people with a lot of cash are patients. Pediatric surgery doesn't pay as much as cosmetic surgery. Problem is big and complicated. More effective population politics and support of pediatric is needed. I dont know the best solution but I hope that people smarter than me will find solution. Will to solve the problem is needed.
It's not a mystery why there's worker shortages, money talks. The south Korean government expects the doctors to give up family life for other families.
Paediatrics needs to be in a well compensated not for profit system. People don’t go into paediatrics for money. Regional children would have better access with this model. Medical training in my country starts with medical school at 18, intern, resident then registrar to do your specialty. For example Paediatric Emergency is a double specialty, you will be 30 years old minimum before you qualify. This is situation is not easy to fix and is a dire emergency. I watched this as a paediatric nurse and it made me anxious.
People don’t go into paediatrics for money, but they don't deserve to be compensated poorly either. It's one important factor that also needs to be addressed.
been living in korea for almost 9 years now and around my house within 1km there are 6 pediatric clinic. so the problem is really getting doctors specialised in pediatry. I know the government have a program where they partner tourism and plastic surgery. I hope they can go the same with pediatry. This needs to be solve in a faster manner since korea got the lowest birth rate so we have to make sure the babies/children we have now will have a healthy life.Not only japan but other countries already did the same thing paying the tuition fees and make them work in a rural area for years. I hope the government will listen to the doctors .

In the states, pediatrics is the least favored specialty among the med students as well.
Medical students start off well meaning and with good intention. But the long sleepless hours and low pay are unsustainable. And the parents swing from paranoia to hysterics to grieve stricken. Covid made it worse.
As a parent myself, i find this situation so so so saddening and frustrating! There seems to be so much more that the government can do to help this situation but they just aren't doing much or anything at all! Hats off to all the paediatricians both shown here in this documentary and those who aren't. Its truly admirable how they persevere on with their calling to save and help children of their nation. I live in Singapore, a country where healthcare is hugely available to all, paediatrics and others. It makes me feel so fortunate and safe to have this extensive healthcare system in my country that i can entrust my children and my life to. I pray and hope the same can become true for the children of South Korea and that parents like myself need not fret about the future of their children.
Maybe it's because Korean don't have children anymore. It has nothing to do with the government. If young people refuse to procreate, the government can't do much about it. If there is no children, there is no need for pediatricians, because the doctors can only get paid for treating the young people. If there is no young people, there is no need for pediatrician. Got it.
Do you think Healthcare insurance doesn't cover all Koreans including children like Singapore? That's the reason pediatricians don't make money as much as their colleagues in cosmetics which not covered by Healthcare insurance. Add t9 that the decline in birthrate that KG and schools had to close down.
@@Scho-penhauer sorry for putting my words the way i did. I think you might have misinterpreted what i meant when i said that the govt could be doing so much more. Im sure the SK govt insures all children in terms of medical illnesses, but im also trying to say they could perhaps put in more effort into ensuring the paediatricians are paid more than their colleagues in other fields to attract more medical students into choosing paediatrics as their speciality. it seems to me from this video that the doctors are struggling financially too, with some even leaving the field to work in others that rake in more salary each month. just my two cents' worth.
@@wilddaisiesthe government tried to increase the number of medical students but the doctors union rejected that. They're like mafia, because they're the least to the population they're the highest paid in the world they want to keep their number down. The government cannot pay them as much as they make in a free market where they can set their price. While the insurance and pension system are struggling because the decline in population they make people pay more and work more years and get less pension in the end. This is just a part of a serious crisis in the country.

Absolutely heartbreaking for the medical staff in South Korea. As a nurse in cancer in Australia it’s difficult enough but I couldn’t even imagine the struggles South Korean staff must be facing
This isn’t translated accurately. Specifically the specialities are not accurately named. Pediatric neurosurgery is consistently missed
The anchor mentioned that the rate of paediatric deaths is double that of other developed and Western nations. The reason for that is because Western nations have opened their doors to accepting doctors of all specialisations from other countries like India, China, Jordan, Pakistan, Brazil, Iran, Egypt and every other nation. The western world is more open to being treated by doctors, irrespective of their origins. Unless Korea (and Japan) open their doors to highly skilled immigrants and overcome a fear of being treated by someone who doesn't look like them, this problem won't go away. Look at the NHS in England where doctors from around the world rub shoulder to shoulder treating children with the rarest of rare diseases. There is so much to be learned from the NHS!
Not necessarily true, as stated. In the US and also at state levels, exams as well as probable additional course work is often the case.
the nhs is so slow for the patients in the first place.. the biggest problem in South Korea is that universities are mostly in the capital, so the most part of the specialists chose just to stay there..
@@AnnySoprano NHS is slow for normal ailments. Where you have serious conditions, no other health service in the world compares to the NHS. You should read up on some of the rare children's conditions that have been cured by Great Ormond Street Hospital and other specialist units in the NHS. And it's the diversity of the doctors that has led to the world class service available in the NHS today.
Dont be fooled by looks. Most ethnic doctors are also Western nationals. Also foreign doctors need to have recognized education and qualification comprable to Western. All doctors intending to practise medicine in the UK are required to be registered with the GMC. Foreign doctors who want to move to South Korea must first have a license from their home country. Also, it is required to have graduated from a medical college approved by the Korean Ministry of Health and Welfare. If they meet the two conditions, they can take the Korea Medical Licensing Examination (KMLE) in Korea. Dont be pulling funny race card. No thing are stopping people from becoming doctors in Korea. You most likely just want countries to drop their medical standard for the sake of easy migration.
@@Trgn No, I don't want any country to drop their medical standards for migration. I almost died a few years ago (medical complications) and the NHS saved me. I remember the faces of the doctors who operated on me and they were of British and Indian heritage. I will always call out the good of the NHS and call out the fact that it's the diversity that exists in NHS that makes it great.
growing up I never had a pediatrician, I went to a family doctor. I fear we may be returning to such times.
In the UK it's never been the norm to have pediatric GPs for generally healthy kids, thats not really an issue. The issue is not having enough specialised surgeons and doctors for actually sick kids.
Younger couples are not interested in having children tbh. When I went to the vet last week, I saw a long waiting line filled with young couples and their pups and kitties. Three doors down is a Paeds clinic and it was empty. Maybe this is purely observational but it should serve as a warning to our policymakers

The Pediatric field is very complicated and especially in cardio thoracic and Neuro surgery. It doesn’t take much for a child to die. I’m no longer in that specialty so I can’t tell how many CardioThoracic fellows specializing in Peds at the hospital I work for .But for an entire country to have only 20 specialists,it very concerning.
It’s possible, everybody is doing Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery which is big business in South Korea

K-pop idols barely get paid well….they only get paid big if they make hits and preform well. Idols are considered mid class jobs in Korea if they don’t get big like stray kids or BTS or smt
KPop idols do not earn that much. You share the money with your company, members and others or pay taxes. Add to that their lavish lifestyle.
@@user-ml7dt9fw6m Yup and trainees and those who don’t get to debut are often in debt too. It is hard to make it big to earn big bucks. In Hong Kong, many first line actors that work for a cheap company like Tvb get paid poorly too. They often have to take one another job or 2 to make ends meet. It is hard and rare to get famous and earn big bucks.

the government can do more.. give more supports to a married couple to encourage them to have children.. for example government housing.. mostly married couples problem so expensive housing rent.. and support to the children make it bigger and also give money to the mothers who take care of their children like a salary.. most woman here in korea think having a baby or getting married will make them just stay at home and no career.... i think they should also free the tuition fee for the aspiring doctors like what they did in aspiring policeman.. government really can do more but they didnt care much so sad 😢😢😢😢😢
This concern was even discussed in Hospital Playlist.. That scene where the Yulje Hospital's Director is convincing the Pedia Surgeon to consider not resigning for priesthood because there is a need to Pedia doctors/surgeons in their country..
Same problem in my country.Cosmetic surgery equals more money.Manny doctors love money. Governments need to put more money on pediatric and find solution for better population politics by consulting with experts. Will to act is needed.

what would help this situation is for Korean medical association to increase the number seats in the medical schools, since they artificially restrict class sizes, significantly increase the salaries of pediatricians, and also to increase the number of pediatric residency programs before the current senior doctors all retire
Health care is going downhill in a lot if not all countries. People in Canada can’t even find doctors, some are even being offered MAID instead of treatment. Better eat and live healthy because there will be no one who can help you if things continue, and they definitely will.
Doctors are seriously the heroes in our society. The government should work on this matter with their dwindling numbers

Unlike other countries where there are a lot of doctors/students that are doing it for vocational purposes, in Korea only the top 0.1% students can even start to dream of becoming one. All top students goal is the same, it's the ultimate dream for any family and has nothing to do with vocation or I'd say even money is secondary as all doctors are well remunerated, only the status, that's why after achieving it nobody wants to do stressful specialities, they all end up looking for easy well remunerated ones that has fixed schedules.
I wish all doctors (especially in childrens hospitals) worked with their heart in it as much as Ryu Jeongmin does (the doctor interviewed at 8:32). You can tell how heavy the work burden is for him and his sorrow over not being able to do more. What a wonderful human being. I became a nurse for the sole purpose of working with sick children. And I would love to work for a doctor like him. Right now, I'm working on getting more work experience to be able to apply for an education to become a specialist nurse in childrens healthcare. I can't wait!

It's sad but it seems to me that many factors have influenced why Doctors don’t want that Specialty. I would like to know if they have good benefits, high incentives from the Hospitals for being employees (and it doesn't matter which University they went to). If the student loans are good and they can pay them monthly after graduating and if they are protected when patients die. From what I have seen in Korean series, when patients die for any reason, as a complication, high risk patients, the doctors are insulted by their families and if they could they would kill them and the Hospital administration humiliates them and may even fire them. So whose fault is it that there are not enough pediatrician surgeons in Korea? Here in US for even any minor surgery I have to sign and under my voluntary decision an Informed Consent Risk.
I doubt they would have nobody applying if right conditions were in place. I finished premed and did well on Med School exam but decided against it due to high costs and difficulty in getting accepted even with good academics from a top 10 uni.

Same in my contry , first of all being a med student and pass the entrants exam is so hard and second of all when they graduated the major in dermatology or plastic surgery or easier filleds like radiology and ... no one is intrested in noro surgery or cardiology
Plastic surgeon which afaik arent as regulated as pediatric surgery get paid a lot, while pediatric surgery which quite heavily regulated is so.

Instead of focusing a large part of money to the entertainment Industry, The government should actually increase the pay of Medical professions having really low no of applicants or else that particular field of expertise may diappear because of lack of student inflow leading to overburden to the existing doctors and thereby increased rate of quitting or increased rate of Medical mistakes due to stress, also due to decreasing birth rates, it is damn crucial to encourage better scholarships to med students to perceive specialization in different fields also
There will be no kids so no need of Pediatrics. Sad to say this but South Korea going that way. At this rate there will be more elders than young one and children's. Just less concentrate on beauty and concentrate on this serious issue. Beauty is not on face but comes within the person.
Just an observation. I think there is an over-reliance on subspecialty care when a general practitioner or general pediatrician would suffice. That part where they had to send an appendicitis patient to a children's hospital only to have the patient rejected is quite unusual. A general surgeon can deal with appendicitis even if it were in a pediatric patient. The same goes for that asthma case wherein they had to go hospital hopping just to be treated for wheezing - why? A general physician or general pediatrician will suffice.
There is shortage of outpatient pediatricians also. Did you catch the section about an entire major hospital in Seoul has only 2 outpatient pediatricians? How about the field of plastic surgery sucking up physicians? How about that part about pediatric practices operating at a financial loss?

So disheartening to see that the older Pediatricians had to forego retirement just to keep their posts coz no one younger is available to relieve him of his duties - and yet another one from a private hospital had to endure significantly decreased income just so he can keep his facility's staff paid. Most private children's hospitals had to close because they can't retain patients because of not enough doctors. No patients, no income. A private hospital is a business after all. And did you catch that figure of 58 cities not having a single Pediatrician??? Unthinkable!!!

Besides that, what other artificial barriers exist for new docs in childcare?
Because there is a tendency for groups of professionals to (as you put it) hyper-specialize, and divide labor to an artificially extreme degree for their benefit too.
E.g., stuff that could even be done by a nurse is restricted to docs in some places, but not others. It even varies state to state in places like the US.
Seems more like protectionism in some cases, which means artificially restricting supply to keep prices high.
Specialization ensures high returns and minimal risk.
In Indonesia there are so many Pediatric and it is priced more money since they open their own clinic and it always a all the time doctor type together with normal public doctor and their son/daughter will inherid their parents job as pediatric. Our country also didn't pay quite well for it, so they open their own clinic. I feel sad for all the babies in Korea, hope the pediatric get better, Pediatric need more rising money than Plastic Surgeon, and need more Ads to raise the intterest as a job, air it on TV!

No matter how many years you have as a great surgeon, everyone needs rest and an atmosphere with plenty more professionals to step in. Over worked doctors can kill patients by accident because everyone is so tired. Government must stop being greedy. Your country is dying and saving lives is critical because your birth rates are so embarrassingly low.

The patriarchal nature of Korean culture is the root of all problems currently in the country. Change that toxic culture and eventually the demographic, mental health issues, etc... will with time heal. With it will come a change in focus from the younger generation in terms of career choices. However, too many older generation individuals are in positions of power, holding tight to that toxicity.

that's so scary, that there is a huge shortage of pediatricians. maybe most of them went into plastic surgery. they should also have break rooms with bunk beds for them to lie down inbetween shifts and when they need rest. this exhaustion is too common and dangerous. that's how mistakes can happen. Time to serious do something about it and recruit some ppl from neighboring countries and offer loan forgiveness to try to lure more to go into the field.

Too Much Plastic Life. I don't understand if it is super expensive to have a child in Korea? Even though I don't live in a rich country. We have a 12 year free school program for children. The cost of giving birth is cheap here. The pediatrician is one of the most popular specialist doctors in Indonesia.

Doctors are not rare in Korea, but specialists in some area like pediatrics are dwindling. There is no sewage problem in Korea.
part of the reason is that the cost to birth a child in Korea is about 8 to 10k vs. 2 to 3k with insurance in the US.
@@thetruth4865Lol. Thankfully that's completely untrue in Korea. And sadly, the US. With insurance it was 10k for the birth of my niece in the US. In Korea it's been around $200 for most of my friends. The ones that paid more (around 2k which is often subsidized to be less) did so because they spent a month in a private facility that takes care of the mother and child for a month plus.

You can get tons of doctors from Vietnam, India, China, and Cuba. Pay them a decent local salary and they will gladly come and work in Korea.
This is shocking! I cannot understand the reason for the shortage of applications for paediatricians in South Korea while the country has the lowest birth rate in the world. So what is the government doing to ensure the sustainability of world-class pediatric care in South Korea? I really don't understand how is this even possible.
For me is easy to understand. Low birth rates is equal to no children in the future. No children in the future, no need for pediatrician. Any doctoral field is a hard one to accomplish. Time and monetary consuming. Then, why dedicate time and effort to a career that have no future like is to be a pediatrician in South Korea? Sad but true.

A suggestion has been that other specialties pay better than pediatrics. So, what prevents the pediatric specialty from charging more for their services so they can pay larger salaries to attract med school students to enter pediatrics? ...One way to keep medical fees in check (keep them from rising too much) would be to offer pediatric work to those who aren't certified in pediatrics. (Cancer is cancer; skin breaks are skin breaks. It's not like children are a different species of animal or something.) ...This really does sound like an issue caused by a bad regulatory policy.
I'm not well educated but other than minor issues like a cut. I'm thinking there is a difference working on children vs an adult. I work as a tech in pharmaceuticals just seeing the difference in how we dispense medications to children vs adult is great. It could be regulations and also just a whole different area of study
