Excellent tutorial. I started setting up my new NAS (Synology DS923+) on Sunday... and today, all the content has been migrated from my old DS218+, and my Plex environment is up and running. No single issue encountered. Thanks !
Just migrated to Jellyfin and it works like a charm. It took me minutes (I did it from the Community Packages). I tested that on my Google TV -- no issues whatsoever.
Thank you for the videos. I had just purchased a Synology 4 bay and returned it because of the 7.2.2 update. You saved me a ton of headache, I'm just going to run truenas on a diy setup now.
Fantastic work, I have been trying to install Plex for such a long time and failed. I recently upgraded to new synology NAS and ended up with 7.2.2 version and was forced to move out of Video station. Your video helped a lot in moving to Plex. Thanks much
Really annoyed that Synology for stole Video Station from me (didn't read the TOS legal document so technically they probably didn't steal it). Synology NAS will be the my last. Not my last NAS, just my last Synology NAS. Thanks for this POSSIBLE alternative tutorial. Makes the "theft" just a bit less annoying.
Thank you, I've been waiting for this. I tried Jellyfin because I really need to setup a Book Library too, but it was alwful Perhaps a Kavita/Calibre video would be nice for those of us who have large amount of PDF and EPUB books that deserve better sorting than a shared drive.
Thanks for the Video!! I have a DS718 with 8TB drives and have run out of room. I purchased a DS1522+ with 2 18TB to start with and plan the connect both. Which one should I connect to my Modem for better plex performance, if any? Or should I just put the two 8TB into the 1522+?
Hello in case you have residues from previous installations, and do not connect plex in any way, what would be the procedure for plex to reach the ip of the nas with its corresponding port and be able to configure it again.thanks
Hi, great tutorial! Just one question. Can you access Plex on your synology remotely via quickconnect? I do connect to my video station remotely via quickconnect because I do not have a public IP. Will Plex also work with quickconnect? Thanks
Thanks, Will. Plex installation went fine by following your steps and suggestions .... after I updated it to the latest version .... SSL Cert stopped working. Will post in your forums shortly.
Maybe you can help me with this Plex question. Somehow I managed to lock myself out of DSM, but at least all my files are accessible via Windows Explorer and Plex is still running and recording. But, I need to get in and Synology support recommended a mode 2 reset. Do you happen to know what this will do to my Plex server? Data backup is not Plex's strong suit and I do not want to have to redo the whole thing if I can avoid it.
I'm on a DS415play which won't update beyond DSM 7.1.1. Does this mean I can continue using Video Station for as long as I don't update my hardware? If it ain't broke, don't fix it! Or... is there a chance Apple might remove the Video Station app from Apple TV if it's now classed as a 'legacy' product?
Their manual updates are fine once you've installed from syno package center, manual install, upload file, accept, it does the rest. Though I just moved mine from my Synology to a NUC for the transcoding recently.
I have Synology drive and I tried installing Plex following your tutorial with no luck, not sure what's going on what I am doing wrong Plex is not recognizing my content on my Nas
Hey, SpaceRex. I really dig your content and I've been a happy subscriber for 2 years now. However, since Synology consciously decided to stay behind on a consumer hardware and further meaningful developments and focus more on the enterprise stuff I really hope you shift your focus on the other competitors. Even though you did built your channel on Synology themed content, you can clearly see how much less views you have on your videos compared from even 1-2 years ago. New players entered the market , some old players upgraded and I think that the gap between the mighty Synology DSM software and the others is closing extremely fast. It just doesn't feels right anymore to buy clearly outdated in every sense of the hardware NAS devices , just because of the glorified DSM (which btw I'm still a fan of and I have 3 Synology NAS'es in my studio)
With all the videos/movies downloaded to NAS, are we able to use Plex without any WAN? I mean, no internet for home, phone, NAS, TV, PC etc., only LAN. Is Plex still usable? Just curious. Thanks!😊
watching all ur vids help me a lot, thxs, i got a question, in file station, permissions, the part of read permissions ther is an option to disable read permissions the last one, when i remove this option, i cant see this share folder in drive, all the permissions are the same in users, also in share folder, and users is not part of any group. thxs
I was going to get a Synology nas...but then they changed the CPUs.. and a few other things, so I ended up moving away from pre-built NAS and this video just yet again confirms how Synology is trying to ditch non-business users.
Yes, please. In my comparison of Plex and Jellyfin, I am currently strongly leaning toward the Jellyfin solution, but have not gone so far as to install it.
Good point, I really enjoy everything about Plex, but seeing a recent JF install/migration video would be nice. Personally, I rank Jellyfin way over Emby.
I'd love a Jellyfin video as well please. With some information about using it on a laptop but mainly on an Amazon fire stick and with Findroid on an Android tablet if possible too. I have installed Jellyfin on the NAS, but the two things above don't work. 🙏
I think if I remember correctly in a previous video he said to open up the photos on a phone or tablet and it should add them to the nas using jpegs...can't remember exactly check back on his video on this subject from the other day
hey, if i put all my stuff on a synology drive, would it be possible to remove a drive and use it in a normal pc and access the files, or it can only be access through the synology device?
When uninstalling Video Station, it asks if I want to remove the database. I'm assuming this will not delete all of my various video files, but just want to be sure.
I started with Plex because it was one of the DSM apps and paid for a lifetime pass when I set up my NAS 8 yrs ago. I found it unsatisfying to use. It never managed to completely sync the metadata, and I constantly had to log in or reconnect to my account. My use case is streaming NAS content to an Apple TV on the same LAN. With all the Video Station hubbub, I was prompted to look for new options. I am very happy using the video streaming app, Infuse. The free version is all I need. My Synology is for work, not entertainment, so perhaps I am missing something about the ideal set-up.
I still just use plain old DLNA on my Synology. I do t need the transcoding stuff that Plex does. I do keep my videos properly organized and DLNA just works. All my AppleTV’s have the Infuse app that does the indexing, cover art and synopsis stuff for me.
Rex can you do a video on surveillance station? This is something I found for sound videos that of areas I do not want to put on on a normal DVR or NVR.
tank you for the tutorial. I have one problem, i do not get access with plex to folder photos. I think there is a problem, because of Photo station. Can solve somebody the problem?
I've been using Plex Server on my DS720+ for a long time. I like my software to be up to date, but I'm still hesitant to upgrade to DSM 7.2.2. If my Plex is up to date, will upgrading to DM 7.2.2 work well? Thank you for all!
I got stuck too, at 8:30 where I can't click the upper right "X" to get past this promo screen. Frustrating! If I figure it out, I'll edit this post to explain.
Is there any chance youd cover other server os orher than synology... its just as time goes on i regret my synology nas purchase for a multitude of resons... id love to know what kind of talking point youd have with os's like true nas, free nas, windows server and the like
I wasn't able to click away the flexpass popup after login, what fixed that was logging into plex on my phone app and then go back. Just if anyone has the same issue
I figured it out, you just need to close this page entirely and open the app again but you won't have the setup wizard this time you will need to go to Settings - Manage - Libraries and set up libraries there.
When I got to the point of signing into PLEX, I chose Google. It just sits there with a rotating circle forever. I tried creating an email/password and while it created an account I could never find a way to get to my server. I'm upset with Synology because when I first bought their NAS, I was pleased that it had VideoStation. So I started loading my DVD library on the NAS only to have them yank my ability to use it.
I really do not like the constraints of Plex. Isn't there an alternative? Basically, I want my Synology to be a single drive in my Windows file explorer, where I can organise my files in a folder tree within the Home folder. But Plex requires to have as many shared folders as media types on the same level as the Home folder. And I will NOT mount multiple network drives in Windows just because Plex can't parse subfolders... (it's even more frustrating since Plex can actually parse subfolders, but only for TV Shows)
@SpaceRexWill I finally got it to work. 2 subtle things that aren't explanined anywhere on UA-cam or forums: If your media is organised in a folder structure withim the "home" shared folder, then the path to be set in Plex for your library should be: / volume1 / homes / [user] / [media folder path to the category] since "homeS/user" is the path to your user's "home" folder For the permissions, the user to which the permissions need to be given is "PlexMediaServer" which Plex creates when installed
Im in mexico city and my synology is back in the states, can I pay you to set it up for me? I have a buddy that can go over to my place to reset things etc while whoever is working on it.
Hey SpaceRex, thanks for the guide should I eventually decide to migrate to Plex. However, it all seems much more complicated than ds Video Station and their remote apps ever were to set up. A real shame Synology decided to do this. Won’t upgrade to 7.2.2 until it’s unavoidable.
oh thx for this one!! i had it on my nas stoped working after update. i uninstall. insall works again.. still not happy with the video station is gone..
Plex is modern but slow as hell! Smart TV’s can handle it so quick like DS video. PLEX APP also not for free. You need account for PLEX. Still use DS video.

I've always have had problems with video station playing all my different format movies and TV shows. There are MANY better options. People hate change....
Synology is not removing Video Station or Synology Photos; I just checked with them. I have a Plex account and I hate it! Video Station is the Best! also Synology Photos will not be going anywhere
i didnt do the downgrade and dont think i will, i had a synology ds224+ that was perfect for a couple of months until they did this, ill probably run synology with the 7.2.1 setup as long as i can and then get rid of it (sell it used) and buy a qnap. tried various jellyfin packages but i only had issues with it (it wouldnt read directories etc etc, i bought synology so i didnt have to sit and read user guides for hours to get basic functionality like video station has). if synology wants us to buy plex to get hardware transcoding, then they should give it to their customers for free for robbing us of video station.

It's a shame there has to be a video on alternatives after Synology Downgrade 7.2.2
Indeed. Some call the Downgrade "theft". Me.
Greedflation less for you more for Synology CEOs etc.
Great video, tnx. Now I can probably upgrade to the latest DSM version (first have to make sure everthing works perfect but so far so good)
Will: Great video as usual. I see other people asking how to play videos outside of the local network. What replaces DS Video?
Thank you, I've been waiting for this. I tried Jellyfin because I really need to setup a Book Library too, but it was alwful Perhaps a Kavita/Calibre video would be nice for those of us who have large amount of PDF and EPUB books that deserve better sorting than a shared drive.

Incredible video! I finally understood how it works.
Just what I needed, thanks!
This was a huge help. Thank you so much.

I really do like your channel. I do learn a lot. Change of shirt is really cool too.

Are SABnzbd/Radarr/Sonarr working on DSM 7.2.2, any issues?
Those are just normal docker apps. No issues.
Their manual updates are fine once you've installed from syno package center, manual install, upload file, accept, it does the rest.
Though I just moved mine from my Synology to a NUC for the transcoding recently.
please possible also nice subject is how to use apple music with the nas
I have Synology drive and I tried installing Plex following your tutorial with no luck, not sure what's going on what I am doing wrong Plex is not recognizing my content on my Nas
How about an Emby and add in how to do Emby with security certificate?

Thanks for the guide. Don't many people use Plex via Docker instead of the package manager?
You loose any hardware transcoding with that (in most cases)
Nice video SpaceRex.
I was going to get a Synology nas...but then they changed the CPUs.. and a few other things, so I ended up moving away from pre-built NAS and this video just yet again confirms how Synology is trying to ditch non-business users.
just buy an old one fam
Is there a way to use plesk with port forwarding and propper let's encrypt certificates?
How does this affect Surveillance Station? Some cameras use the H.265 codec.
Jellyfin migration video maybe? 😁
Yes, please. In my comparison of Plex and Jellyfin, I am currently strongly leaning toward the Jellyfin solution, but have not gone so far as to install it.
@@PeterHonig. Same here!!

mariushosting has two good articles on setting up jellyfin. One with hardware transcoding and one without. I would recommend starting there.
Nice! Do you have any solution for PhotoStation? To enable the thumbnails for heic pictures on the nas and not the client?
I think if I remember correctly in a previous video he said to open up the photos on a phone or tablet and it should add them to the nas using jpegs...can't remember exactly check back on his video on this subject from the other day

If I follow this steps can i acess my library with plex outside local network? Is it possible?
Thank you for the video.
WOW! you can backup plex now?? whit the plexmediaserver folder? i haerd it was not possibile in "easy way"
When uninstalling Video Station, it asks if I want to remove the database. I'm assuming this will not delete all of my various video files, but just want to be sure.
Really helpful Will but wow you are using a very old version of plex that has options not available in version 4.x
Thank you so much Your awesome!!
Does anyone know the monitor that Will is using? It is looking really nice!!!
How about remote acces to watch videos?
The only problem I had with Plex is movie's deleted scene content doesn't show properly.
Thanks, that helped me get it running
tank you for the tutorial. I have one problem, i do not get access with plex to folder photos. I think there is a problem, because of Photo station. Can solve somebody the problem?
Thank you for this excellent video containing most interesting facts. BTW: Are you a relative to Jim Carrey? ;-)
I've been using Plex Server on my DS720+ for a long time. I like my software to be up to date, but I'm still hesitant to upgrade to DSM 7.2.2. If my Plex is up to date, will upgrading to DM 7.2.2 work well? Thank you for all!
Also, followed your instructions to the "T" and I got stuck after signing in ..... just circling with no activity in Resource Monitor ....
I got stuck too, at 8:30 where I can't click the upper right "X" to get past this promo screen. Frustrating! If I figure it out, I'll edit this post to explain.
I have a silly question, will i still be able to play mp4 files directly in ipad Synology Drive app after upgrading DSM?
Should be able to! The client is just direct playing the file so it will keep working as it was
Is there any chance youd cover other server os orher than synology... its just as time goes on i regret my synology nas purchase for a multitude of resons... id love to know what kind of talking point youd have with os's like true nas, free nas, windows server and the like
Thank you this help a lot!!
Plex doesn't support .VOB files and Video_TS files so you'd have to convert them. Maybe with Handbrake
I wasn't able to click away the flexpass popup after login, what fixed that was logging into plex on my phone app and then go back. Just if anyone has the same issue
it doesn't work for me, what should I do in the phone app?

Why do i need an account for plex? I see in reason in i will only use it local. But it is not passible. For me it is not the right.
Thanks, I think I will migrate to Plex from VS before upgrading to 7.2.2. Btw, the Plex requires port 32400/TCP to be opened.
I really do not like the constraints of Plex.
Isn't there an alternative?

(it's even more frustrating since Plex can actually parse subfolders, but only for TV Shows)
So you can just have sub folders with plex! It works totally fine
@ I must have poorly explained what I’m trying to do 😢 Ah well, I’ll keep looking
@SpaceRexWill I finally got it to work.
2 subtle things that aren't explanined anywhere on UA-cam or forums:
If your media is organised in a folder structure withim the "home" shared folder, then the path to be set in Plex for your library should be:
/ volume1 / homes / [user] / [media folder path to the category] since "homeS/user" is the path to your user's "home" folder
For the permissions, the user to which the permissions need to be given is "PlexMediaServer" which Plex creates when installed
Im in mexico city and my synology is back in the states, can I pay you to set it up for me? I have a buddy that can go over to my place to reset things etc while whoever is working on it.
I am lucky that I was using both, Video Station for internal and Plex for External.
Thank you so very much!
Excellent, thank you
Hey SpaceRex, thanks for the guide should I eventually decide to migrate to Plex. However, it all seems much more complicated than ds Video Station and their remote apps ever were to set up. A real shame Synology decided to do this. Won’t upgrade to 7.2.2 until it’s unavoidable.

Plex is making me pay, no way around paying? And then it will not accept my payment.
Very helpful thanks
If you don't care about companies selling your watch-history to whoever has 5 cents, then yes, Plex is a great choice.
You don't mind that do you? 🏴☠
What?? True??
Uh, oh....
No
Don't forget to make sure you learn the "Plex Dance".
Plex is giving me a "playback limit" nag when I try to play a movie from my NAS.
...yes Synology has for me, the best OS for NAS...but synology doesnt have the best hardware on the same range of equipments as others brands that still as a dedicated app for video files...so the home users that have little knowledge and wants to buy a NAS, what would u recomend to them???? buy synology just because as best OS... there are a bunch of other application in synology Package Center that can compromise the system performance and they didnt take them out...what apps will come next?... sorry to say but I think some youtubers are very condescending towards synology... the question shoulnt be how to config Plex, should be how to create a "wave" to pressure Synology not to let apps fall or avoid mistakes like the *23 Series...
I second that.
PLEX is not an alternative. I migrated from to Video station a few month before their announcement. I have a lifi-time Plex pass, but they keept degrading their term of use of private information (privacy issues), they changed user setting with upgrades and shown commercials. The last one was my last straw! (This is a copy of one of my other posts).
Thank you!!
Great!!!
Tried Plex and it slowed down my small 2 disc Synology NAS to a crawl. Kept getting out of memory areas. Until I can upgrade to a much larger NAS, I'm uninstalling Plex.
This is what I need
Good update but shame it's necessary. Undecieded what to do for now.
I chanced to Emby. Works better than Video Station. But https doesn't work. A video would be great!
Synology destroyed one of the main features and attractions to their devices for home users, what kind of decision was that based on...
How's it goin yall
Thanks.
Or just use Kodi.
It has continue with email. You didn't have to use another external service to login. If I can't create an account without using Google, Apple, Microsoft or Facebook sign in. Full stop not doing it

Going from Video Station to Plex is like breaking up with your girlfriend and just pay for escorts instead.
Time to move to other technology, maybe qnap wont kill his video station
Are you sponsored by Plex?
Plex is the devil. Synology just lost a customer over some bs. Smh
bro u funny somnewhow
