    Amazing tip regarding how you crushed down the foreground, exported it and then brought it back into the photo. I'm sure that I'll have to review that portion of the video multiple times before I will be able to successfully duplicate your procedure.

    Great video as usual Anthony. Does anyone really think the breathtaking B&W landscapes that Ansel Adams produced are depictions of reality. Of course not, as he detailed in his books, they are a painstaking manipulation of the film and, particularly the final print to get to what he pre-visualized.

  • @petersands2704
    @petersands2704 2 роки тому +5

    G'day Anthony! Well explained, clear and helpful for general editing. I did note your comments about realistic sky replacements, but this one fails that test because there are many keys indicating that the light is coming from the extreme left: the big rock on the left hill, direct light on the left-facing wall of the house, and on both visible walls of the shed on the right. Why didn't you use a sky and sun rays with the sun coming from out-of-picture (on the left)? Is that possible? This criticism aside, I'm certainly going to look at more of your videos as I like your presentation style! Peter

    • @AnthonyTurnham
      @AnthonyTurnham  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Peter, yes absolutely. I thought I kinda covered that in the video? Perhaps not. I just wanted to use the Luminar default sky library as everyone watching with Luminar has access to that. My recommendation is indeed, as you mentioned, to use a sky that matches sun position accurately - of which I have quite a few in my own library and from the library I bought and linked to in the description. Sometimes I edit in a non-perfect way in videos as a way to show what to avoid rather than what you should do. Perhaps I missed the mark explaining that in this one.
      Cheers for the feedback Peter. Always appreciated!

    Many thanks, Anthony, for this creative edit .... especially giving us a good understanding of how to create the layer to maintain the grass perspective. However, I am wondering if by exporting the composite image in a JPEG format and importing as a new image so to continue the editing, whether this doesn't handicap our processing as the image is compressed. Maybe export as a TIFF file???? Thanks for the good ideas you always share!

    • @AnthonyTurnham
      @AnthonyTurnham  2 роки тому +3

      Yeah, good point. For sure a nice 16bit tiff has more scope for pushing and pulling in the edit. However, in this case I didn't feel it was necessary. The 8 bit jpeg at 100%is effectively identical to an 8bit tiff and the extra bits of data weren't really needed.

    Nice one Anthony. You’ve demonstrated the creative use of many of the tools in Neo, with some examples. This way, it’s much easier for your viewer to identify how and where these tools might apply to their own images. As you point out, the actual believability of the final image here is not crucial, since it’s merely a vehicle to help illustrate the point. Oh and for those who can’t bear the thought of a photo that’s not reality … well that reduces photography to a simple record of the view, but it’s supposed to be artistic isn’t it? … starting with just which bit of the view you choose to put in your photograph. Embrace the creativity ! 😉

    Extremely useful and well done video with lots of tricks and pointers for editing. I am surprised that you didn't have the sun come into the image from the left out of the frame as there is light on the rocks on the left and the side and back of the building on the right. Thanks for sharing your insights and talent in these videos.

    • @AnthonyTurnham
      @AnthonyTurnham  2 роки тому

      Cheers. Yeah, for a 'proper' edit I would have used one of my skies from the library pack that had the dramatic mood of this one but had the sun off from the left. This sky already had a sun position that was central so I played to that rather than the direction of the shadows. I did discuss that in the vid though? My cardinal sin! It was more of an example of don't do what I did 😆

    Hi Anthony! Long time - no see! I love what you can do with layers, well done Skylum, but as you say Anthony a layer merge tool would be very helpful. One other missing tool that puts me off Luminar Neo though is the lack of the 'clone stamp' tool. Lumiar 4 and AI had these tools so why doesn't Neo? The 'Erase' tool is fine for erasing small areas, but can cause problems when you want to erase a large area, like a person's head, it can lead to mismatches and distortions that prove difficult to correct, unless you open Luminar 4 or AI! 😾😾 By the way, how is Lando? Can we see some videos that include him - perhaps another one on editing pet photos, but this time using your little one!😻😻 Cheers! Felix the Cat. 😺😺

    Truly excellent Anthony and very well explained. Neo is integral now to my processing and the software will only get better and better. My one area of doubt is it's catalogue capability and RAW processing. Recently, I have been using DXO for it's incredible RAW / Noise processing power and then finishing in Neo. The conundrum is, my yearly Adobe subscription is due very shortly for LR and Photoshop, LR having a super catalogue facility and to be honest, Id like to drop it but am tentative to do so. I tend to take in excess of 3000 shots on a nature holiday and LR was always my 'Go To' to sort everything out. Putting it simply - does Neo stand up on it's own as an editor / catalogue and use nothing else or what ?? Your thoughts on this would be appreciated.

    • @AnthonyTurnham
      @AnthonyTurnham  2 роки тому

      Hi Roger. Great question... tbh, as you said, Lightroom's cataloguing ability is the best. So for that reason I still use it for organisation. Like you I have thousands upon thousands of images to manage. There's another company that have released a storage/ management tool but I haven't had a chance to test it properly to have a opinion. Hopefully I can get something together before your Adobe renewal...

    Anthony, thanks for your explanation using Neo, very well rounded out.! I have a quick question for you and coming from an IT background, thought that you may be able to assist. I've tried with the Skylem tech support to no avail. Even though I have the latest version of Neo, I am finding it slow to run using my 50mg raw files off Canon. Even though I'm using 16gigs of Ram, NEO seems slow as opposed to Luminar AI. Have you experienced that, or do you have to follow certain protocols with Neo? Mostly I am using Capture One, and even though it's expensive, it works a treat. Any feedback would be appreciated.?? Glad you're enjoying the NZ countryside!!!

    • @AnthonyTurnham
      @AnthonyTurnham  2 роки тому

      Hi Rex, yes smaller files will run quicker although I find my 45mp 14bit files run okay. Although 16gb is said to be fine for use with Luminar, I've always found 32gb makes a big difference. I'll be building a new computer this year as my current set up is about 4 years old so I'll be stepping up to 64gb at that point. However, I do run other software and a couple of monitors (one just out of shot) while I'm working and recording videos.

    Hi! This grass layer trick was very nice!
    Just a short question if I may. I can see difference between "Develop Raw/Color/White balance/temperature" (temperature unit : [Kelvin] ), and simple "Develop/Color/White balance/temperature" (temperature unit : simple numbering from -100 to +100). Is it a mistake or has it any reason to make difference between Kelvin value and numbering value adjustment? (numbering adjustment of WB is very rude, 1 step causes high step from basic). Always need to go back to the Develope Raw if I used copy-paste or preset copy functions previously and need to re-adjust the WB. thx!

    • @AnthonyTurnham
      @AnthonyTurnham  2 роки тому

      Hi Tom Tom, no mistake there. Kelvin is used by raw files. Once your out of raw develop you're dealing with non-raw adjustments so the traditional style -100 to 100 scale is used as the kelvin temp can no longer be accurately determined.
