Have some fun playing over this cool John Mayer style backing track which is written in the key of C#m or E major. As the tune starts on A major, rather than the root key of C# or E, you could even say this was an A Lydian backing track...
As for what to play over the top, well the C#minor pentatonic and C#m scale will be the ideal choices. You can also use the arpeggios of the chords in the song if you want to change with the chords. Have fun and keep jamming!

Above all, keep learning and keep having fun! 😀😀😀
Did some workout, took a hot shower, sat with the guitar and jammed on this track before sleep. What more can you ask from life? This is just bliss.
True that! Sounds like a perfect evening :) :)
Your Guitar Academy Absolutely.
Ask for a joint before the jam
Wake up and repeat 😀
Yeah man, taking a shower is just the BEST! I *love* taking showers!
Working from home, what a way to spend my lunch break
Enjoy!
same! hahaha
Ive played over hundreds of backing tracks but this one is just one of a kind.. amazing. The chord progression touches your soul, the guitar part is just beautiful. JM would approve 100%.
Wow, thank you so much for this amazing comment! I think it's pretty much the nicest comment I've ever seen :) Keep enjoying the backing track and keep jamming! :) :)
This has some low-key “Slow Dancing in a Burning Room” vibes and I LOVE IT
Same key bro
Feels like every note I play fits so perfectly with this track!! Love it thank you
Thanks Jack! So glad you love the track - plenty more where that came from :) :)
I absolute love it . This is probably the only John Mayer style backing track which actually sounds like him . Great job
Thats the best backing track i ve ever played on
Nice job man! ...put it on to improvise to and wound play the rhythm with you ...
Probably one of the best guitar jam tracks of all time.
More like E major, relative C# minor. The tone and phrasing are all in E major
Yes well spotted! It definitely has a major feel all round and others have commented that in theory it could even be considered Lydian as the opening chord is A, but the chords are based on the E major scale.
It feels very minor to me. Unless you are referring to minor as being harmonic minor, as classically trained musicians might. To me, A is the 6th chord of the tonic C#m. I know some would call it the 4 chord as it stems from E ionian, but that's not how I was taught nor how I see it. Regardless, I hear minor (aeolian).
Thanks for clearing that up. The notes fit much better in E major.
it's C# Minor--that's the tonal center. not A Lydian. E major is C# minor but C# minor is the TONAL CENTER.
@@marcusatmercy In the absence of a V-i cadence, it still sounds like C# minor to me....It does have the Aeolian minor five chords in the G# minor.
No way in hell is it Lydian; that's just a little knowledge being dangerous...
this issick beautyful. so molodic, thanks
Thanks Rat! Great to hear you are loving it. If you want to learn how to play the actual guitar part, it's all here for free: www.yourguitaracademy.com/courses/john-mayer/lessons/electric-john-rhythm
Amazing. I could play along to this all day!
Got major 'waiting on the world to change' vibes from the opening drums
Amazing backing track!
I love John Mayer so I'll definitely check the course too 😎
Thanks guys!

Thank you so much, what a lovely bit of feedback :) Many more coming your way soon!
Great track. Sounds awesome, still leaves a lot of room for my guitar to bloom while soloing over it. Good job

This is the human nature cover that john did at MJs funeral, so sweeet
can I write and solo and record a record to this if I give you credits ? amazing vibrations I want to carry on !! lmk
Hi there! Yes, please send us the details to contact@yourguitaracademy.com 🙏🙏🤘
It's a brilliant backing track - thanks. Although mine always stops half way through and looks like it's loading. Does anyone else have this issue?
Isn't this just human nature transposed?
What would an interesting chorus or bridge progression be with this? I struggle with that a lot. I come up with a nice verse progression but then don’t know where to take it.
A lot of great bridges maintain a pretty similar chord structure to the verses/choruses. You may switch some chords around like instead of going from A to bm to G# maybe start on bm then go to G# and back to A. But the main thing I think makes great bridges is just the dynamics and the feel used. Some great bridges are the exact same chords but played with build-ups, finger picked, etc. Just experiment.
One tip that use often is enter a birdge on the relative major & vice versa. In this case it’s a HUGE Open E that you can smash out. Will completely change the tone of the progression while staying in the same key✌️
The best backing track on UA-cam!
Cette piste est excellente, merci pour le partage !
Thanks K2pad!! Glad you enjoyed it :)
So much feeling. Almost came to tears improvising on this :D
Never gonna give you up, never gonna let you down...
Gorgeous backing track. Thanks so much for this one. you may very well have a new sub right here =P

Yes you can! Please email us and we'll sort out the details: contact@yourguitaracademy.com
Ik this is really late but can I ask how did you get the atmospheric background? It sounds like an organ, organ pedal? Or added on later
The background is an organ synth in Logic X. great sounding synth right?!
Your Guitar Academy
Yes it sounds amazing!
Best. Backing. Track. Ever.
Haha! Thanks Ivaylo, very happy you like it :) :)
Super cool... Thank you superb progress... Good training...+1+1
Super cool merci superbe progression...bon entrainement...+1+1
You wouldn’t have a tab of this just wondering because of all thoes little licks sounds awesome
Yes absolutely, they are part of our John Mayer player study which you can find here: www.yourguitaracademy.com/courses/john-mayer the third section (electric John Rhythm) is the part that deal with this song! Enjoy :)
This is an excellent track man, thanks
Thanks Ethan! Glad you are enjoying it :)
Fell asleep wile playing my guitar to it. It was relaxing 😌
this is just human nature in another key lmaoo
Yep, pretty much!! :)
super fun track man, it's helping me get some much needed c#m practice in
Can somebody explain those quick funky changes coming after C#m7?
Smooth as F*ck!!! 😎
Haha! Thanks Candy Man!
I’m wanting to use this in a song I wrote. Is there a way I can purchase an mp3 and are you ok w that?
Hi John, all sorted via email now right?! 😊😊🤘
Your Guitar Academy yes. Still wondering how I could get a mp3 version of this song. Much appreciated. Really love the groove!
What are the chord tabs? Just a regular old A isn’t the exact same sound. Are they funky ways of doing the chords like john Mayer always does lol
Hey Jake! Good news, you can learn the whole track here: yourguitaracademy.com/courses/john-mayer/lessons/electric-john-rhythm
tasty
Thanks Mitch! :)
So I’m listening to this. Is there anyway to tell which chord is witch. I can’t hear the changes. I mean. How do I count this out. Super new(b) here.
I’m writing a song and this track just gave me new licks. Thank you so much
Thanks for this! Lovely track!
Our pleasure! Glad you like it :)
Human Nature
lol this makes my dumb playing sound good idk how you manage it it sounds like im following the chords though im not trying at all
was jamming to this and had a lot of fun playing the Human Nature melody. good practice!!
Absolutely fantastic to jam to. Thanks for the work mate!
Glad you enjoyed it! 😊😊🎸
can i use your backing tracks on videos if i mention your channel in descriptions? :)
Absolutely! Are you planning to jam over it? Please mention our channel and @yourguitaracademy us on Instagram so we can share your awesome jamming!
@@yga thats right! thanks!
Really nice track.
I wish you could highlight the chord when playing 👌
ummm how do I purchase the backing track and jam to it?
This is a beautiful chord progression man , good job
Sounds amazing. ❤
Best jam track ever
this is a really great track
Best track ever
Nice! :3
First of all I should say beautiful track, thank you for sharing
Thouht it would be in A since A is the first and most used chord in the progression... clearly I am missing something
Hey there, you are correct! A major is the relative major to C# Minor so it really comes down to what you want to base your scales around as the notes for both are the same.
@@ygaI thought E major is the relative major to C#m, isn't it? And then wouldn't A minor would be the relative minor to C# Major?
Hey Edward, thank you for your comment my brain clearly wasn't in gear here! E major is the relative major to C#m! but A minor is the relative minor to just C major!
@@yga I just realised my mistake too haha
Is this track particularly inspired to any John Mayer song?
Thank you!
It's a mix between Human Nature and Waiting on The World To Change! 😊😊
@@yga Thank you so much! It is gonna be very helpful :)
no gonna lie the organ is a little annoying
Thank you very much for this.
You're very welcome! 🎸🎸
hi everyone ,if anyone else needs to find out about blues jam tracks try Jadonite Guitar Blues Buddy ( search on google ) ? Ive heard some amazing things about it and my mate got cool results with it.
This is one's really cool, fun to play with on higher strings

My new fave backing track. Thanks for this
Haha! Thanks Riko! Have fun jamming away with it :)
Love it!
C#minor Aeolian right?
Hi Jeff!
You got it! C# Aeolian is perfect! You could also use either the C# Minor pentatonic and C# Minor Blues scale here too!
If I could marry a backing track this would be the one.
I can definitely hear John Mayer's version of "Free Falling" embedded here! Awesome!
LOVE that version of the track! I'm sure it is as it influenced me a lot as well! 😀🎸😍
"Free Falling" it's Tom Petty's song, not John Mayer.
Is this based on a real song, by any chance
Haha! It’s a mix between Human Nature and Waiting on the world to change!
Sweet! A Lydian, technically....in the key of E major/C#m. Sure sounds like A maj is "home".
Hi Doug! Yep that's bang on Doug, this is defo a bit of an A Lydian track but wanted to keep it simple and clear for those who are jamming over it that John Mayer would definitely be thinking E major pentatonic or C#m pentatonic. I hope you enjoy jamming over it! :)
If I was trying to keep it simple and had to get them there fast without theory, I'd say F# dorian/pentatonic minor, as I teach those in tandem and give them a cheat sheet 'Lydian down 3' etc. Makes them have to hear what is going on, too. No Mayer fan here, bit this is a cool track to mellow out with. Thanks!
TheDogpa Nice! I like the idea of teaching this in Dorian, very interesting. I guess, at the end of the day it’s what works for different people, and whatever makes things click! :) Glad you are enjoying the track!
Huh? no, this is not in lydian mode. It's not in A. A is the IV chord in E
A little knowledge is a dangerous thing
Hey! Do you mind if I use this in a video I’m making? I’ll be sure to put the link and credit. 😎
Hey! I think I just emailed you about this :)
@@yga I don’t believe that was me!
Ah! Would you mind emailing us at contact@yourguitaracademy.com then? Please add a little bit of detail about how it will be used! Thanks 🙏🏻🙏🏻
Any body know the notes ?
E-F#-D#-D#-E-E- C#. Then???
What do you mean the notes? The key is C# minor, so the basic C# minor scale is: (written out as Db): Db Eb F Gb Ab Bb C Db. Does that help?
Your Guitar Academy the notes for the melody
What song is this inspired by?
Had fun jamming along with this track, Thanks for the upload!
Can we get a tutorial for this? Please? 😍😍😍
Hi Maurice! Yes of course - The full tutorial is here: www.yourguitaracademy.com/courses/john-mayer/lessons/electric-john-rhythm ... Try the whole course as well, in the section after that we learn a solo to play over this track :)
Your Guitar Academy you guys are amazing 😍 you're the f*cking man! 😉
Haha! Thanks mate :)
C#m is my favorite.
Loved the track! Excited to explore the rest of the resources here.
I do have a question, though: as a bassist, I naturally played with the backing track, not soloing over it. I started playing an A major scale mostly following the chord changes and locking with the drums, but making it as minimal as possible so it wouldn’t sound too busy. I started with an A major scale, but A Lydian also worked well - perhaps better.
Can you tell the reason why? A major and A Lydian both cover the chord roots (A, B, C#, G#), being the only difference the 4th (either a D or a D#). Is there a reason why you mentioned A Lydian instead of A major?
Thanks!
Hi Gabriel,
The poster actually explains this in the description. The chords follow the key of E Major or C# minor. They are relative to each other because their notes are the same - much like the A lydian scale. Since the chord progression starts on A and resolves on C# it makes more sense (theoretically) to play your leads over the C# minor key.
You've even said it yourself - the difference is a D# versus a D natural.
The way that I look at it is with the full chords. You mentioned you're a bassist so root notes will only take you so far when it comes to "modal" progressions.
Here are the notes in the chords:
A Major - A C# E
B Major - B D# F#
G#m7 - G# B D# F#
C#m7 - C# E G# B
Looking through the notes there - you see there are two chords that share the D#. That is why this song would be considered A Lydian. TECHNICALLY you could play A Major over the A Major Chord and the C#m7 Chord but once the B and G#m7 are rung - that D natural will sound awful and out of place. Best to stick to arpeggios or maybe pentatonics in that case.
Exactly!! Thanks guys 😀😀😀🙏🏻
Thanks a lot for your clarification, Andrew!
As a beginner I do tend to stick to pentatonics, arpeggios or at least roots and fifths when in doubt, but I'm really interested in understanding these aspects to be able to push things forward a bit.
Your explanation, along with the original post, definitely help me learn 🙂
@@gabrielalbo6911 Happy to help!
