Years ago I went on a cruise with my boyfriend and was so excited on our first trip together. I know I over packed. Going to the airport we both took our own luggage and he had one suitcase to my three. He didn't help me with a single bag, on the bus or loading the carry on. I didn't pay attention to that, anticipating a wonderful vacation. The cruise was fine, but the real disappointment was coming home. Again he bypassed my suitcases and I was young and strong enough to load them on the airport bus. I saw him sitting in a seat and he saved a spot for me, but as I entered the bus I saw a very pregnant woman standing and a old gentleman standing holding the poles because the bus was full. I offered my seat to the pregnant girl and she was relieved. I asked my young healthy boyfriend to give up his seat to the older man standing. He would not do it. When we got home he was already planning our next vacation. I broke up with him right after that trip. He just didn't have that kindness and was selfish. I just couldn't see spending another minute with him. That was my choice and I never regretted it.❤❤

Mine also.. lived half way thru 100.. Always visited with people sitting up in the living room. She canned so much at age 99 that we got the gifts from her rather than the other way around. Of course she requested gifts go to Save the Children anyway. She expected to live to see some of the great great grandchildren.. and she did. She had 12 children at home.

My 14 year old grandson was looking at old pictures. In some of them I was about 26. He looked at the picture and looked at me and said “You used to be so beautiful what happened to you?” I just looked at him and said I’m 66 not 26 and I think I still look beautiful. Hello Patti. I felt old when I turned 70. I was sore all over for three months. I found out I have a torn rotator cuff. After another month I was going to the chiropractor, didn't have surgery, started taking collagen (neocell liquid). I started feeling like my old self. My mother-in-law , 90 years old next month, came to stay with us for 2 weeks. She almost died with kidney failure in 2013. My father-in- law told the doctors she would be better, for them to do all they could to save her. So here she is now, spunky as ever. She keeps our house tidy, puts her makeup on, does her hair, etc. I tell her how she inspires me. She loves watching your videos. She even brought her bathing suit to get in the pool. Thank you for making me think.

Hi Patti, well I wanted to respond to your question and it has taken me days to do so. Feeling old, when it hit me like a ton of bricks was when I was diagnosed with cognitive memory impairment a year ago. I can not explain how alone, scared, afraid of what my life would become. I worked as a professional and knew "I was changing" but to afraid to say anything for awhile. As a professional I worked in the court system, doctors, attorney's was a expert in my field. Today I am no longer able to do these tasks, I was heartbroken. However, I knew I am a fighter so I read more, play brain games, take IQ test and rest more. I have to see my brain specialist often who says I am doing well and some test are great others okay. But, today I have no dementia thank god. I am thankful for my blessings, enjoy fixing my hair and make up again. For me, today I need to take small steps into the abyss of the unknown and do not take anything for granted. Your a awesome lady Patti and I enjoy your channel. I try to be kind every day and wish the world was a kinder place.

And remember, your soul is eternal, that’s why you don’t feel older even though your body is aging. So praise God for letting you live a long time and keeping you in the palm of His hand. You Can Do It!

One of the serious difficulties this pandemic has created - for those of us who are fortunate enough to have survived it - is that we are, for the most part, far less physically capable than we were before the pandemic started. I am now 71 and have an autoimmune disease that causes my windpipe to be 25% blocked. Prior to the pandemic, I was working pretty hard to improve my overall fitness, and was making progress, slowly but surely. However, BOOM! COVID hit and eventually all my forms of exercise disappeared. (I'm the type that needs an in-person setting - someone to flog me in person). I've lost a good 50%, if not 75%, of the progress I made. I am MUCH weaker physically, which drives me crazy. I'm at least still functioning, however - my neighbour's husband, who is now 85 and has dementia but managed to function somewhat previously, has been housebound for over a year and is now very weak, frail and confused. Quite apart from all those poor souls who died, the pandemic has been a disaster for a lot of previously functioning seniors. (Sorry for the rant, but this unacknowledged health issue REALLY bothers me.) Anyway, things are getting better now, so it's back to work at making myself more fit - and less old.

    • @yodafannie

All my friends are dead and this is the first time I've felt OLD. It stinks.

  • @Melhut65

I've shared this here before and I'm inspired to share it again. I live in Santa Monica and there is a public pool nearby where I swim that is shallow enough that if people so choose they can walk their laps as opposed to swim. Before Covid, I used to share a lane with a woman named Aida who is now 108 years old. The only time she can walk is when she is in the pool. Otherwise she is either in a wheel chair or laying down. She can't hear very well or see all that great, but the way she feels when she's in that pool is such that it drives her to get there every single day. She is so precious. She's very petite and tan and always wears red lipstick and I once found out that tucked up into her hat that says Aida, she has two long white braids. Whenever I ask her how she is doing which I have to yell so she can hear me, she always says, "I'm tired. We'll see how much longer this is going to go." and then she laughs. I retell the story of Aida here to simply say, you're not old. In Aida's world, you're just a baby. xo, Melanie

I remember being in England when I was in my twenties and the escalator at the airport was broken. I was trying to carry one of those bags that was like a giant duffel bag up some stairs. My shoe fell off and I dropped my bag and I didn't feel too old at that moment, but I had one of those, "Who do I think I am?" moments. Here I was traveling through Great Britain with no idea how to travel.
A young mother with four children came up the stairs behind me and said cheerfully, "Come along kids! Let's help the lady!" Those kids grabbed my bag and carried it upstairs like it was a big game. I still get tears in my eyes when I think of that woman's kindness. That woman with four children she was trying to manage, but still had time for me. That was 39 years ago and I will never forget her.
Thank you for sharing your story, Patti. The only time I feel old now is in airports! I think most people over 40 do. So much love to you and those beautiful twins!

I was in England a couple of years ago, at the age of 69. I was trying to navigate the London subway system, on my way to the airport, with a suitcase that was WAY too heavy (I had bought a whole bunch of books...kinda stupid). The London subway system is NOT set up for anyone who is not very mobile - there are all kinds of stairs. Everywhere I went, there was some wonderful young guy who immediately offered to help me. (One even commented "What have you got in here? A dead body?") I didn't feel old, though, so much as way over my head. But everyone was so helpful - it was lovely.

When I met little Norah Grace, I realized I won't get to see her grow up, get married and have babies of her own. She probably won't remember me and how much I loved her. I think the day I realized I had gotten "old" was the day I decided that I didn't want to live in a big house anymore, it seemed like a burden to take care of it all and the 12 little gardens I had planted and tenderly loved throughout my years on that property became torturous for my back, neck & shoulders. After we sold it, I felt like I unloaded a huge bundle of baggage weighing me down. I understand baggage, I've experienced enough of it in my lifetime. I want to down size again. Hopefully in 2 years I can make it happen. Moving is so difficult for us older folk, it really scares me.

Hi Patti, enjoyed video and was awed by your talk about feeling old. I just turned 80 and dreaded it. Thought I'd really feel so much older. Then, 2 days later had Gallbladder surgery. Thought that would really do me 😏 in. But I made it through both and I'm doing okay. Yes, there are many things I'm not able to do anymore and I try to accept those. Truth is I am old but still able to take care of myself for the most part. Live one day at a time for the most part and I look for kind and loving people to be around. Maybe that's tougher than anything else! Thanks so much for the inspiration you've given me. I will always remember your advise and thoughtful 💕 words. Beth/

Hi, Patti. I'm 73 and (I know I'm fortunate) will not allow the "old lady" in, ie: when I find myself "slouching" I sit up straight, when I find myself walking too slow I put a "skip in my step" and a "smile on my face" like I'm going somewhere special. No matter what, when I leave the house I comb my hair, put on my lipstick and give myself a "look once over". I could go on and on but you get "the drift." I got this idea from an article I read several years ago. Two golfers one in his 50"s and one in his 90"s. 50 year old asks 90 year old, "what keeps you so young" and he said, "I don't let the old man in." The younger generation of men have been told from the time they were children that men and women are equal and it's offensive to "help" a woman. So they don't even think of chivalry. Not even for older women. It just doesn't even cross their minds. These younger women who screech " I don't need a man" will be singing a different tune when they are seniors. He said at first he was confused because he was like where's an old man ? He was in his 70's and he told me this was the first time he saw himself as older because he always felt so young inside. Sorry to hear that, dear Melissa. Life is such and this is a reality in life. Our children are growing up everyday whether they are married or single. They choose to be whom they wanna be. Different generation gap. Best is never to expect our children to want to include us in their life. It is all about EXPECTATIONS. Have to lower our expectations from our children or else we will be very miserable. I have 3 growth ups. I have learnt to break away from them at times to enjoy trips n leisure with my other friends be it junior or senior friends. I'm a sociable being by nature. I will make a conscious effort to link up with people. I learnt from others to go to where I am celebrated bcs our loved ones may not do that for us. So do have your own circle of friends to chat n go trips with. If you already have them then it is good for you.

Well you took this 62 year old to "church" this morning, watching your video. I was riveted to every piece of your story & absolutely loved the end where you talked about feeling hopeful & inspired again & not letting parts of that experience taint you. It's amazing what simple acts of kindness can do for someone....like the wonderful TSA lady who told you how beautiful you are & really changed so much about that trip. I try to life my life that way & always extend kindness whenever I can, and it is amazing how it comes back to you so often when you live like that. And age seems to be relative & "older" always seems to get pushed back as I get older. And yes, it can be a struggle sometimes coming to terms with that & going thru our different seasons of life. Thank you SO much for sharing this story & I will definitely remember this story. xo 💜😎

When I read your comment I started to cry. I’m only 53 years old, but feel much older due to very painful chronic illnesses that have forced me to “retire” early and go on disability.
But nothing has been more painful than watching my 49 year old sister succumb to stomach cancer. She moved in with me. One day she tripped and fell. I was shocked and devastated. She tried to hide her tears as I asked if she was ok. My sister was the strongest woman I’ve ever known. I was so proud of her breaking barriers into “men’s work” yet always becoming the best.
The pain from having stomach cancer was indescribable, but the worst pain she experienced was becoming weak and not being able to do things for herself. She had always been there at a moment’s notice to help others.
Three weeks ago she went to her rest, so my pain is still raw. It struck me that we can all face these difficulties and choices even when we’re not yet considered “old”. I find these videos to be relevant and helpful to me already. Thank you for sharing 💞

Yes! I can relate to what you're saying: I am old! I am 79, and to think that I'm "pushing 80" has me almost overwhelmed! The airport and traveling thing has hit me, too! I really don't want to do it anymore! It's more of a hassle getting to the airport, getting IN the airport, getting to the gate, etc. that kills me... Not the flying! I could go on forever, but I've said enough. I am old. Whenever I start having a day of feeling overwhelmed by "what to do today" (I'm retired for the past year and 1/2... after working for the past 14 years at a part time job). Rambling on a lot also confirms that "I am old"! Thanks for sharing. I guess I'll just "Join The Club". I love your channel. Good job.

Patti. Thank you. This was so helpful to me today. I was an RN for 44 years. I retired 5 years ago because I physically couldn’t handle the work anymore. Since I retired I have fallen 3 times. I have had 4 separate joint surgeries. Have had a hip fracture on 2 separate occasions and have had a knee replacement that went very wrong. I am in pain for 2 years from the knee. I was always the one helping others and now I know that sense of DOOM that you describe. What gets me through is leaning on the Everlasting Arms of God. Praying for healing in Jesus Name. Thankfully my husband has been a great support. I’m 71. Never thought it would be like this. Those grand babies are so adorable. Being with grandchildren keeps us young doesn’t it?

I’m still grumpy at Southwest. I checked my big bag because it is so much more convenient. My suitcase was “lost.” After waiting a couple weeks (at their request) to see if it turned up, I began the process of making a claim for my property. It was an ORDEAL. It took weeks of filing papers and getting receipts for everything I claimed, some going back several years. I had to grieve the loss of several things that were in that bag that were personal things my children had given me. I do not check bags now.
I’m in my 7th decade. I love the things you say near the end of your video about who you are. I hope you continue to be independent (and a bit sassy) for many more years. For me personally, an invisible line has been crossed. I find I’m not as brave as I used to be. I don’t like the feeling. May God bless us every one!

I'm 74, my spouse is 75. We are happy to have downsized our big home for condos in three different cities where our grandchildren live. We have the freedom and simplicity of life it affords. We are guests at family events, and no longer have the responsibilities of executing holiday celebrations and family activities, but we still find great joy in being a support to our Grand families. Being old is not something to fear. Every day and year I live is a gift with lessons to embrace and new skills to acquire. I hope to grow older every day with the same grace and humility my grandmother did. Let's quit having anxiety over wrinkles and do our best to manage the aches and pains. All we leave in this world when we depart are memories and the lessons learned by being in honest healthy relationships with those we love.

I know how you felt I will be 69 soon and I look in the mirror and say who is that person and then I pull out the make up and say there I am. I was the one who could do it all. Now I find it is getting harder and harder to do things and I am alone a widow and kids different place in the country and England. I got so frustrated that it took me for ever to do something that normally would have been done in 2 seconds I said so this is what old is your old. You look old and you can’t do things that you could what a depressing feeling. I sat down and thought next will be a nursing home. I sat there and said the heck with a pity party I may be getting old that’s life but I will not give up I will adjust If I need to tweak the makeup so be it if I have wrinkles I earned them and where is that wrinkle cream it can help some. As far as doing physical things I do what I can and know my limitations. No sense trying to prove I can still do it and be stupid when I know I may hurt myself. It’s very hard for me to ask for help because i was always the one who did it. Before I was the doer but now it is time and it is hard to ask for help it was always I can do it myself or let me do it for you. Now I have to gracefully let go and let others help and you know I can still get things done just maybe not physically but in a smarter way by asking for help I now see that it’s not only be kind and. Ice to others but to yourself as well snd your state of mind will be less frustrated and a lot happier. I also have to thank you for after 43 years of marriage my husband dropped dead and I could not sleep at night and was a private mess. I found you one sleepless crying night and started watching you. You brought me out of depression to lesantly coping some nights I just watched you all night. Your sweet kind way and don’t give up attitude. You are truly one of Gods angels

I never sit and dwell on what I CANT do but what I CAN do. I do what I am able to do-the rest I choose to leave it alone. When you have arthritis and back problems you realizes where your strength lies and you adjust accordingly. When you do this assessment you will not fight old age but be graceful for everyday God gives us. My motto is every day is “best day yet” that God gives me. Hopes this help someone else. Oh Patty, I know what you mean. I recently flew back from Palm Springs. There were a group of men (golfers), I knew this because I was behind them when they checked their golf clubs, on this flight. When we arrived in Denver they were standing together in a group at the baggage carousel while we waited for our luggage. There were a few bags from an earlier flight on the carousel. An older, quite heavyset woman came over and really was struggling to get her quite large suitcase off the conveyor. The men just ignored her and a couple of young girls ran over to help her. I’m sure if the woman was a young hottie they would have helped in a heartbeat. I just don’t know what has happened to chivalry. I would like to think my adult sons would have helped this lady.

My dear friend, YES, I've felt it one day just like you!! At first, I was depressed & sad even though I just before that I had felt young & could do almost anything if I put my mind to it. But, the depression didn't last long, for God had a job for me, my friend needed help & I was there to help her & put all my energy into my caring for my friend. Feeling needed was what did the trick for me to get my balance of age. God's word tells us that we are to first, Love Him with all our heart and second, to Love our neighbor as ourselves. True happiness & Balance comes from the fact that we are not alone, God says that we should not be anxious about anything because he is with us & will help us through any trial that befalls us. You live by those standers, I feel your love for others every time I watch your videos! You truly are a blessing to us ladies & that love makes us beautiful....and guess what, the gal at the airport is right....YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL, INSIDE & OUT!! I always enjoy spending time with you. You are exactly right, it's our choice to Love God or not because we are blessed with the free will to make that choice! There is soooo much hate & violence in the world today that the peaceful & loving people, those trying to live by Godly principals are the minority today. Well, I'm sorry if I said too much, I did not mean to preach, just saying that only because God loves us, can we love other... Have a Wonderful Day!! Your Friend

Oh yes, I occasionally have that feeling, but usually when I’m out of my comfort zone. I spent a week cleaning and cooking for all my family to come over for a holiday meal. I felt really good about everything. Well, all my children and grandchildren got there, laughing and talking with each other, and I didn’t have a clue what they were all talking about or what was so hilariously funny. So, I smiled and laughed too, then went to sit by the other grandmother and we talked and had a good time.

😢 right now. I 💜 this. The feelings are indescribable. It is grief and we must deal with it and process it, and learn from it, and go on, somehow. So grateful 🙏 for your videos!

I just love you! I appreciated listening to this. I love being nice, doing the right things. There are mean and grumpy people out there. My happiness and love stems from God (Jesus). Thank you!

for the record, flight attendants are not required to lift luggage, it is up to their discretion . You have encouraged me to keep strength training and packing light lol.

I can relate to this and I’m just over 50. Was diagnosed with MS in late 40s so for a few years now, I’ve been weak. But I still have my mobility and I’ve lugged bags through the airport, buy now I listen to my body so can’t do what I used to do and that is okay.

Hi Patti!--gorgeous, as always. Consider this: there are 40-year-old's who can't haul a carry-on bag to its compartment due to a "bad shoulder". For that reason, I didn't see your story as "It's official--I am old and can no longer do for myself." You can do everything *but* lug that heavy bag above your head (like many 30, 40, 50-somethings), so you're doing GREAT--you just have "a bad shoulder". :)
Much love to you, Jim and Biscuit. xo

There are some people who are old at 45. I've worked with them and they are so depressing to be around. Yet I had a neighbour who, at 78, was the most uplifting, joyful person I'd ever known. Stay interested in the world of the young, keep active and make the best of whatever beauty you have. I was in my local craftshop recently and the girl behind the counter said I was the prettiest woman she's ever seen.....and I'm 71. I told her she needed to get out more!! But having a compliment like that is so encouraging. Stay happy and healthy Patti... the world needs you!!

Such a beautiful story, thank you for sharing. Not long ago, I was almost done teaching a course and I felt exhausted.... so much so that I muttered that I needed to retire. One of the students (a soldier) overheard and asked me not to.... that he had learned so much and that my passion for the program was contagious. It meant so much..... he will never realize how much 💕

Oh sweet Patti , you are such a wonderful ,beautiful person, in and out, and this has been the best video I have ever watched!!!. 💕🌸I laughed and cried watching it. You are a great storyteller, I felt like I was right there with you.🙂💕 Congratulations on your beautiful grand babies, they are so lucky to have you in their lives.. What a wonderful Mom you are to stay a month helping your daughter. God bless you always and may you live to be 100. This world needs more kind loving people like you in this world. I’m not too far behind you in age I’m 74. My husband and I are experiencing not being able to do the things we always have done as fast as we use to but thankful we can still walk and talk without assistance, ha, and most important that we still laugh everyday, and are very content and thankful for the life we have together. I feel very blessed in life, and thankful.
You are very pretty and I am the one that told you a while back that you looked like pretty late Debbie Reynolds. I still think of her when I-watch you. Have you had anyone else tell you that? Take care of yourself and your hubby, and wishing you a great new adventure in your new home., filled with lots of love and happiness🥰🥰
