- The Drive Chain also known as Final Drive Chain is the ultimate part of any motorcycle responsible to transmit the energy/ power of engine to the rear wheel. The drive chain is actually an integral and penultimate part of the complex Drive Train of any engine which is comprised of Transmission Gears, Primary Drive and Final Drive.

Standard Roller Chains:
The Standard non O-Ring chains are the regular drive chains that we use in our older motorcycles and in some of our latest small capacity motorbikes. The standard roller chains are also non self lubricating chains and hence it is required to lubricate them externally on regular basis.
Even lubricating the non O ring standard chains are not sufficient as sometimes it is hard to lubricate the internal parts of the chain and if by putting extra effort and extra lubricants to the chain you succeed in lubricating it "properly" soon the dust and filth attracts to the lubricated chain including its internal parts make it difficult to clean and lubricate it for the next time.
The filth deposited inside the chain components not only corrodes the drive chain but also acts responsible for wear and tear of sprockets and chain itself.
O-Ring Chains:
The O-Ring Chains are the modern drive chains consists of a rubber "O- Ring" placed between the chain plates. These O-Rings are fitted in between chain plates to seal the already vacuum filled grease between the rollers and the other internal components of chain. This mechanism of O-Ring type chains make them self lubricated and hence they require less maintenance and have longer life and better performance in longer run.
In O-ring type chains when the rubber "O- Ring" is pressed and riveted, it changes shape and becomes flat from the sides hence seals the space efficiently but the pressed O-Ring with flat sides create friction which results into significant drag. This drag can be felt while rolling the rear wheel in cold state, however the drag vanishes after the chain rotates few turns and heats up.
X- Ring Chains:
The X- Ring Chains as the name suggests are drive chains with "X" shape rubber ring used instead of "O" shape. The X- Ring type chains are more modern chains with X-shaped rubber ring placed in between the chain plates to seal the grease filled inside the chain components. As upon pressing these type of rings come in contact with lesser surface area and hence less drag coefficient is generated with same efficient sealing property as O-Ring chains provide.

sorry to mention this bro but...oring xring chain if open requires more maintenance than normal chains (and are more expensive too) reason being the oring or xrings get dry if not lubricated properly from outside (more in open-chain cover) then it just deteriorates and withers away faster than iron or steel contact in normal chain thereby reducing chain life and increasing chances of a chain break. oring xring chains usually found on heavy bikes like 500+cc coz they move fast and if you have a superbike it is mentioned in the user manual (yes the book we throw away) to lubricate their chain after some kilometers. so there you go why oring xring on superbikes or high cc bikes. no need for it on normal bikes. just keep your chain lubricated after every 1000 kilometers or 500 kilometers (open-chain) to keep it going.

I worked in Honda and Suzuki, you are giving wrong information, Honda gives O ring chain and we received so much complaints, second O ring chain need lubrication on every six hundred kilometers.

I own FZ bike, I was always thinking why they have not given chain cover, bcz without chain cover, chain gets dirty easily during rainy season.

Actually chain cover is provided even for O-ring chains in some bikes. My Honda Shine has O-ring chain and a chain cover as well.

I am using Royal Enfield classic 350. I ride 60000 km in last three years. I have very bad experience about O ring chains. I replaced three chain sprockets in 60k km. Now I am using without O ring chain and fully satisfied. Just I complete Mumbai Jabalpur ride of three thousand km no any issue in rainy season and muddy roads. I am using 90 no gear oil as a lub. I got a better milage an good performance. I hope it will give long life too.

I have use both chain system open chain set and chain with cover.open chain system in India require more maintenance where else chain with cover is maintainance free.

Believe it or not. my pulsar 150 stock original chain lasted me 10.5 years and 68 thousand kms. Its a closed chain. Can u talk now? can you compare quality with any other? Myself never expected bajaj bike and parts to be of so much quality!!
Yes. Same with my pulsar too. Chain set lasted for 10 years and 65000 kms. Bajaj parts are of high quality. But people don't want to believe it. They just blindy want to praise videsi brands.
