Removing that scene from the english dub was a huge mistake. It's literally the most pivotal moment in the whole story. The whole reason Astro exists and, in this version in particular, why Tenma became the bitter and tortured villain that he is.
I think they underestimate what kids can handle. They handled Mufasa's death in Lion King just fine, to name just one example. And emotionnally powerful moments like these are the reason these stories stick with us
This is for me when you realize how much of a tragic villain Temna is. Yes he does horrible, HORRIBLE things...but when you really, really get down to it, this is a man literally turned by grief into a horrible person because of how he feels _he_ is the reason his son is gone _and_ how he never knew him at all.

Why do they have to break our hearts by making Tobio's death worse each time they make a new season? Hopefully if they reboot this it doesn't get any more heartrending, you really feel that grief during those last few seconds...

I have since watched all the episodes (also thanks to you since you made them available), and am now finishing the series for a second time with my family because I want to blab about it without spoiling the story for them. I know I commented already but I really love this series and I got more to say about this clip now that I've watched all the episodes, so here are some random insights that have been rolling around in my head forever: Longish thought I'm pretty sure the moment when Tenma finds Tobio after the car accident has two different audio recordings. The first one (I believe it's in episode seven) has audio that makes it sound like Tenma sort of stumbles onto the scene, and then his voice when he calls out Tobio's name while holding has a lonely, longing sort of feeling. The second version of the audio has Tenma running over to Tobio, and then he stumbles a little bit when he sees him and comes over to pick him up. The way he calls Tobio's name in this version is so grief-stricken and intense that you can literally feel the pain. I originally felt really depressed after watching this clip because the voice acting was that good. It's a small shift but it's significant because it shows how different things are from Dr. Tenma's view vs. Dr. Ochanomizu's view. Ochanomizu didn't have the context for what Tenma really felt when Tobio died, but we get to see the story from Tenma's point of view in the final episode. It's really beautiful. Shorter(ish) thoughts We see a small glimpse in the flashbacks of Atom with glowing red eyes, and it makes me wonder if he would have taken a path similar to the one Atlas took had he not been deactivated. Tobio dies biking home to save Robita from being scrapped because he views Robita as his friend. Atom then goes on to save both robot and humankind and acts as a bridge between the two. I think Tenma's love language is physical touch. He is so deeply affected by Atom hugging him at the end and we see him holding Tobio in the flashbacks. He's just really touchy in general I feel like-- he grabs Atom's shoulders, he picks him up and lifts him into the air, and he often stands or sits very close to him. He doesn't even hesitate to take Tobio in his arms when he arrives at the accident. I know he's his dad, but still. He's also really injured by Tobio and Atom pulling away from him in laboratory 7, it looks like both memories are very significant for him. I think both Tobio and Atom's love languages are quality time, Tobio was really sad about his dad not spending time with him, and Atom responded really well to quality time with both Ochanomizu and Tenma. So them not thinking Tenma loves them makes a lot of sense, since they're speaking different love languages. Bonus The name Tobio means "flying hero" or "flying boy/man". (How perfect is that?) I looked it up because in the lyrics for the Japanese theme (I believe it's called True Blue), there's one line that goes "Bokura wa tobitatsu" (we're flying/we fly away) and when I heard it I went, "Gee, tobitatsu sounds a lot like Tobio, and I know it's the verb in that sentence so it means flying... what does the name Tobio mean?" So maybe Tenma calling Atom Tobio was somewhat fair, given that Atom does indeed fly... Alright. I'm done now.
Tenma was so focussed on his talent of robot inventions that he kinda rejected his son, But after Tobio died by car accident, Tenma dealth with deep regret and as his way of a second chance he created a robotic replica of his son. Until he realised that it still never will replace Tobio and was overwelmed that his creation was to intelligent and dangerous when it dealed with anger. So Tenma decided to shut the robot down and locking him away. Out almost insanity, he than destroyed any of his next super human-machine prototype projects in flames. Leaving his company in grief. Until one day the robot got awakened by Tenma's co-worker Dr. hiroshi and adopted the robot with the name ASTRO. Doing anything to give the boy a new better step in life, away of any memories and connections between Astro and Tenma.

Y'know the funny thing about the Dub removing Tobio's Death? The PS2 game also uses the English Dub's cast, but has a cutscene where they play clips from the show, but they also show last bit Tobio's Death in said cutscene. And the game STILL got away with an E-Rating.
The voice of Astro or in Japan, Atom, or Tobio, his birth name was voice by Makoto Tsumura who ironically enough voiced a character named Makoto in Street Fighter III Third Strike and then in Super Street Fighter IV

Didn't the Australian version of the show stay mostly unchanged? I thought that was why their DVDs had the original 16:9 formatting and not 4:3

Umataro Tenma is actually a complete mutual(=neutral) in most of Astro Boy series. Neither hero nor villain.
All this could’ve been prevented if Tenma decided to upgrade Robita into the new model instead of replacing her.
