Excellent video, Irene! Ich was the bane of my existence for the first few years of my fishkeeping until I learned to choose my fish better and quarantine :) I have no doubt Ich-X is the most effective medication given Cory’s long history of excellent research. However, in a pinch/emergency when you can’t wait for online and your fish are suffering, API’s Super Ick Cure has very similar ingredients (Malachite Green and benzaldehyde) and is available at your local big box store - I didn’t lose any fish once I started using it & it worked quickly. (I tried salt & heat first but it didn’t work for me, plus then I started keeping plants and snails). I haven’t had ich in a few years but still like to keeps meds on hand, so will pick up some Ich-X on my next Aq CoOp order :)
I bought tetras and they arrived with white spot around 2 months ago... They just look so helpless and I just place them in quarantine container with heater and daily 20% water change because I do not want them to suffer more... 2 weeks later they miraclely healed without any chemical treatment 🥰
Thank you for the video. When we are removing 1/3 of the water, are we thoroughly siphoning the gravel aka deep clean or is removing the water good enough. Can you feed during treatment?
OMG IRENE why couldn't you have just posted yesterday!!! I spotted Ich on my neon tetras and had to just rush out and buy something. I hope this imagitarium parasite remedy works.
Thank you. I agree to have these meds on hand because you just never know when illness will hit. I love your videos. I am also a loyal customer to Aquarium Co-Op. enjoy your weekend
Irene thank you for sharing this! You always have amazing content! I appreciate all the research you do and taking the time to give us step-by-step instructions on the topics that you cover!!👍🤗🌿🐟🌱🙏
If I catch it early. (2 or 3 spots on 1 or 2 fish) I use 1/2 of a organic garlic clove for every 5 Gallons of water for 24 hours, crank the temp to 82 degrees and leave the lights off. Do it 1 more time after 48 hours. Works like a charm if it's not too extreme yet. Doesn't hurt my guppies, plecos, any tetras or my Kuhli loaches. Of course I've still had to break out my ICH-X once before... But we won't talk about that. Anyone who's interested in at least trying this method, do not boil or blanch the garlic. The natural oils do the trick. Do your first water change after 24 of your second dose.
Hi Irene! I have a 40 gallon tank with what had a total of 12 fish. A week ago I purchased a couple of neon tetras and some live plants. Three days later, I found two neons dead (1/3 water change) and then soon after found two more dead (1/3 water change) and now six, which would include rasboras, bleeding heart tetra. However, a day ago I found ich on my rainbow and is in the process of ich treatment. I am beyond devastated of the loss of 10 fish. Any idea of could have started the wrath on my tank? 😔 Appreciate the video!
We successfully treated ich in our tank of neon tetras - only lost one as new fish keepers. Your video was our go to reference. Our next question, which I haven't found an answer to elsewhere, is how long we should wait before introducing new fish to the tank. We will quarantine and treat the new ones for your recommended time. My kids are eager to add another fish or two, but we want to be very cautious so as not to add them to a still dangerous tank even though all visible ich has disappeared.
Irene, your tanks are amazing but I might have figured out how you get algae. My guess is that your tap water has so much phosphates and organics in it so you get extra algae. What you could do to help it is buy some distilled water from your grocery store and when you do a water change you dechlorinate the distilled water and then put it in your tank. When you put the distilled water in your tank it should lower the ph kh and gh so make sure to put some seachem equilibrium in your tank to get a higher gh and put some seachem alkaline buffer to buff your ph and kh. So if I were you I would do water changes with distilled water for a couple weeks and see if you get a big algae decrease And if there is I would buy a RODI unit so then your tap water is pure. Another way to make your tap water pur is by buying a zero water off of amazon. It is a cheap alternative to buying a RODI unit but it will give you zero tds so your water will be pure. Good luck, Riley
Do shrimp and snails get ich, should i preemptively treat them in a quarantine tank like i do new fish with ich-x which is what i use on my fish, can new plants carry ich should i treat them with ich-x?
Say I have a 10 gallon tank.on the second day, say I remove 3 gallons of ich-x. When I refill 3 gallons of water and redose, do I redose the original 5ml for 10 gallons of water, or do I redose 30% of that (the amount needed to make the new water the same concentration as the old water). Essentially. Do I always want the equivilent of 1tsp/5ml of ich x in the water, or am I going over that with each new partial water change? Thanks in advance!
Oh my goodness thank you for this video!! I had ick come from my new Ángels and it’s killed a few before I found the ick. It spread to my acaras and my plecos so I hope this works.
Samantha _ Salt causes the fish to produce slime which helps protect , fish may drop their slime coat due to stress, long term use is not recommended too much can cause internal organs to fail, a small pinch is beneficial for fish and plants by providing beneficial minerals, it does not evaporate, some fish and plants are more sensitive to salt. Check that your fish is ok with 86 F for 2 days.
I agree with this so much!! I've tried so many chemicals, but the most its done is that it kills off my fish! Ich-x at quarter dose seemed to harm my plecos. Try heat before anything else.
I found that brand really works well. They have one for parasites and it killed them off successfully of one of my sick bettas. He seemed to already have it while in the store, the sbd that might have been the result was still there but still lived for almost an year. I'll be sure to have this ich medicine on hand.
Ich can be treated with salt but valvet can "not" because they show up in salt and fresh-water aquariums. However salt is still recommend to use with the medication if you fish can handle it because the skin and also it helps with secondary things they get from valvet.
So thanks to both you and Cory's fantastic blog posts and videos I managed to beat Ich with no losses! However, one of my female black phantom tetra's has picked up a secondary infection. Looks like mouth rot and a spot of fungus on her body. I was reading your blog post on the aquarium coop website about fungus and you suggest dosing Maracyn and Ich-X together every day for five days if a one week soak hasn't knocked it out. It hasn't :(. Is that with or without the 1/3 water change before every dose of Ich-X? Cause the instructions for Maracyn say to not perform any water changes during the 5 days of treatment. Thanks!
Ugh I wish I had seen this sooner. I noticed ick in my 20 gallon community tank a week ago. I caught it fast and began treatment with what I had immediately. I used aquarium salt, high heat, and API ick cure which I’ve been successful with in the past but for some reason this time it did not work and it took out my poor neon tetras one after the other. They got it so much worse than the other fish. It also killed my baby pleco which was devistating. 😔 I ordered some ick x off the aquarium co op website the other day because my usual treatment is not working and my fish still have ick a week later. I have two neons left but they are riddled with spots and barely hanging in there. Unfortunately I think by the time I get the ick x it’ll be too late for them but hopefully I can save my other fish.
Hi, i used API Ich meds in my 75 gal tank but i forgot to take out my carbon out of the filter canister. But after i saw your video i went an bought ICH-X. What should i do now 😢
Fingers crossed, but I haven't had an ich outbreak in years. I keep Ich-X handy, just in case, though. Would it be recommended to raise the temp while using it?
What’s the difference between the parasite and stress ich? One of my hatchet fish has so many that showed up out of no where (I’ve had him about a week so I’m thinking it’s the environment change) his mouth is also hanging open slightly. I’m freaking out I’ve never had a disease before. I don’t have a quarantine tank, is it VERY important to quarantine him? If so I can get a filter and make a make shift one.
I love your videos! They're so informative and you make it so easy to understand with the way you explain things. You're one of my favorites. Thanks Irene! 👍🍄😎
Well I’m glad I saw these notice ick on 2 of my fish in display tank , and have only been using para guard and garlic . But not much improvement . Was going to wait till day 3 then use ICK X , guess I should just jump on it and not wait around . I also move some invertebrates out let them soak in tap water wipe their shell and put them in another tank I didn’t think much of it but I’m terrified I might of just passed it to the other tank . 😢
Don't forget to check your water conditioner. Certain types will greatly reduce the effectiveness of Ich-X, as I sadly foundout. Best to use the water condtitioner recommended for Ich-X, Aquarium Solutions' Ultimate. It is compatible with Ich-X.
i just discovered ich on my fish, i bought a uv steralizer and will install it, and raise the temp, if it doesnt work i will use ich-x. does anyone have experience with uv sterilizers? and as always Irene, your vids are incredibly helpful!
Since the lockdown we have struggled to obtain Ich-X here in South Africa, being sold out as fast as it comes in. I had to use the Seachem Paraguard in my quarantine tank for my new fishes. No Ich so far, but it could also be that there was no Protozoa in the fist place... I cannot find Maracyn nor the Paracleanse in South Africa. I am using Seachem Kanaplex instead of Maracyn and Anti-fluke and wormer from NT Labs instead of the Paracleanse. Does anyone know if there is better alternatives or will these do?
I get my new fish ick in quarantine like all body covered with white and their finns are ripped. I bought 3 e b acara 2 of them survive i only treat them with 32•C heater in 7days straight they now healthy
Irene I’ve got a problem to my Molly‘s might have ick I only have aquarium soul and Mela fix unfortunately my pet store does not sell any other medication‘s other than that do you know any way that I can treat them or that Mela fix will help
I have a 10 gallon quarantine tank however I’m leaving for my trip to Phoenix for four days I leave in two days do you recommend that I move them to the quarantine tank and add medication‘s or can I leave them in the current tank that they’re in right now and hope that it doesn’t spread to the other fish right now it’s only the two mollies I’m probably gonna move them to the quarantine thing tomorrow I don’t know but I do need help with it though
i removed my carbon filter in fact i removed all media while treating ich... will i reintroduce ich into my tank if i use the old media ? im worried ill experience a ammonia spike if i throw out all the bb.. would fish mox be a good idea to help combat any secondary infections?
@@GirlTalksFish I did talk directly with Hikari, and they highly suggested not to use Prime but seemed to agree that API Stress Coat would be a better option. But these companies are always very vague when talking about another companies treatments, so a person needs to read between the lines a bit. The reason I called was because my oscars were not acting right after the first Ich-X treatment, so I did a 50% water change and things improved quickly. Hikari also told me to not treat the tank size and only the water. So to get this you take length X width X height and divide by 231. I think this is VERY important and a big reason why people lose fish while treating for ich. You need to measure from the top of the gravel to the top of the water for height, then inside glass to inside glass for both length and width. I was originally adding 11 tsp to my 125 gallon, but after they gave me that formula, it was closer to 9 tsp that should be going in. This also could have been a reason why the oscars were acting strange, just too much ich-X. If people are treating their tanks going by the tank size, that could be really bad.
I have a 20 gallon long and I bought 3 new platys to go with my existing fish 1 semed kinda sluggish so I qurantined it but... it had ick I couldn't see and before I got it out it got all my fish got ick I bought medication and it took 2 weeks to get here and by the time it did all the fish recovered but I the quarantied fish i saw ick on 6 out of 8 of the fish the 1 i quarantined who gave all the other fjsh did pass but everyone else lived
Like the video. But Just in my opinion I ordered some pond ich x to treat my 90 gallon 5 foot tank turn the heat up to about 84 did as I was supposed to now it was a planted tank true it did get rid of the white spots put after I treated for about close to 2 weeks some of my fish start flashing again and so I treated again where I was almost ran out of the bottle. Don't see any white spots (except on my gourami move him to quarantine) some of the fish were still flashing water parameters we're good i I started to treat I figure for a longer period of time with seachem paragauard and I tell you the truth a week later as of today I do not see any flashing. Of course they might flash when I am not looking but I watched them for several minutes. I think ich x fought off the main infection. Paraguard is starting to clear it up. So I am going on my 21 day treatment with paragaurd. (21 days is how long I use to treat in the past to completly destroy ich) In just one more note I've kept my temperature only at 80 degrees with paraguard.(P.S. Paraguard is a little easier on me b/c I don't have to change the water everyday)Will see what happen after 2 weeks with paraguard maybe I won't have to go 21 days! LOL! I PROBALLY STILL GO 21 DAYS! Love your video you have alot of great tips!
There’s a way to get rid of ick way easier than that. Just raise the temperature of your water to 86 to 87° for 3 or 4 days and that should do it instead of using chemicals.
what about ancient fish? isnt malechite green deadly to them? I own black ghosts and while im unsure, i believe 1 may have ich and im trying to find a medication in japan (very difficult) for it. the tank only has ghosts and plecos.
Can i use this method goldfish as well?? Recently my goldfish is terribly affected by ich. And i also use salt and medication but it doesn’t seems to get better. What can i do?? Please help! !🙏🏼
Super late to the party, but I really struggled with a recent ick outbreak in my tank because I really do not want to use malachite green in particular. This is known to cause cancer and cancerous mutations in humans, and having already had a cancer scare, I am not about that life. Are there any safer alternatives? Note: I did end up using medications containing malachite green but am somewhat living in fear at this point.
Hi. I have a fish with white spots that does not look like ich. It’s just 3 long white spots on the tail. The ich meds have not been helping. What else could it be?
I recently went to a big box store looking ichx and they looked at me like I was an evil fishkeeper! They were so snotty and said that they prefer natural treatments over chemicals....
I'm trying to quick cure some new plants by keeping them at 86°F and recently went to 89°F. How long before all potential ich and velvet parasites are gone?? I have been quarantining for a week now, four days at high temps.
Should you dose based on the aquarium capacity, even though there's probably less water in it (substrate, plants, decorations, etc)? Like if I have a 20-g should I dose for 20g or more like just dose for 15g?
Good question! I dose based on the aquarium capacity. The manufacturers seem to account for some variance in the amount of stuff people keep in tanks. 👍
I need someone to answer this question soon please, my fishes health depends on it. I think my fish are sick or something cuz one of them has white cloudy spots on the fin and body, I bought treatment, but a carbon filter cartridge is what goes in my filter so how am I supposed to keep the tank clean and treat the fish if I am supposed to remove that for the treatment to work?
Pls do more videos, I can't find any better fish videos other than you and KGTropicals. 😠 BTW, I bought 10 neons and not quarantine them, add them in the community tank with female Bettas, Guppies and Kuhli Loaches. But only my Neons are affected with ICH. Why only them? pH at 6.8, temp 79 and I just did 25% water change using RO + NaCl. Do you think it'll work?
Very useful. Fish Disease is certainly a downside to the hobby and there is not enough information and reviews on the effectiveness of aquatic medications.
I am currently doing an ICH treatment, and of course as many know, my items in my tank are 'blue' now. Are there any solutions for taking the blue coloring our of my decor?
Is this ich also known simply as white spots? I had a goldfish a long time ago and it developed white spots and it was a straight forward thing to cure however I don't think they called it ich.
my betta had one white spot on his top fin, and the part of the fin that had the white spot was a little ripped. is this ich? I didn't want to take any chances so I put him in a quarantine tank and gave the tank the ich medication drops...and now he doesn't have the white spot but still has the rip in his top fin...does that mean the ich is gone now?? first time betta owner here...
My betta had Ich that I was able to see them clearly, and all I did was raise the temperature just a little bit, maybe it didnt do anything, but it seems that my betta is a real fighter and I shouldn't always rely on him being strong

I also want to add this medicine will leave stains on things like air tubes. Though based on what I've seen from others it doesn't on fish deco.
Interesting... maybe I'm using a different brand of airline tubing, but mine have remained clear even after multiple treatments.

Do you have recommendations to help fish grow back their fins after surviving ich?

Should the feeding be everyday while treating the fishes in the aquarium or need to be paused until the treatment is completed? Please guide.
Will it be okay for me to use this in a tank with turtles?
Is Prime compatible with Ich X?
I Love Your Channel!
Thank you 😊, this is helpful
i removed my carbon filter in fact i removed all media while treating ich... will i reintroduce ich into my tank if i use the old media ? im worried ill experience a ammonia spike if i throw out all the bb.. would fish mox be a good idea to help combat any secondary infections?
Is it ok to use Prime with Ich-X? I read mixed information on this. How are people conditioning their water when doing the changes?
I read the same thing, but I haven't had seen any adverse effects from using another water conditioner like Prime or Fritz water conditioner.
If people are treating their tanks going by the tank size, that could be really bad.
great ! i have a 5 foot fish tank with a sump filtration. how the heck do i clean em all
Your videos are the best. Thank you Girl talks fish!
This is going to be so useful
Thank you for this 🙏
I have a 20 gallon long and I bought 3 new platys to go with my existing fish 1 semed kinda sluggish so I qurantined it but... it had ick I couldn't see and before I got it out it got all my fish got ick I bought medication and it took 2 weeks to get here and by the time it did all the fish recovered but I the quarantied fish i saw ick on 6 out of 8 of the fish the 1 i quarantined who gave all the other fjsh did pass but everyone else lived
Yikes, I'm sorry to hear that! Glad you were able to treat them successfully.
How many hillstreamy do you have???
Le Baguette Yes haha
There’s a way to get rid of ick way easier than that. Just raise the temperature of your water to 86 to 87° for 3 or 4 days and that should do it instead of using chemicals.
Can i do it in heavily planted aquarium?
what about ancient fish? isnt malechite green deadly to them? I own black ghosts and while im unsure, i believe 1 may have ich and im trying to find a medication in japan (very difficult) for it. the tank only has ghosts and plecos.
What about methelyne blue, it's very Commons for ich treatment, melachite green is rare in store
When switching from level 2 salt to level 3 do I just add 1 tbsp salt per gallon on top of the level 2 concentration or do I change the water first?
Can i use this method goldfish as well?? Recently my goldfish is terribly affected by ich. And i also use salt and medication but it doesn’t seems to get better. What can i do?? Please help! !🙏🏼
can i reuse a heater that was in a ich tank?
Super late to the party, but I really struggled with a recent ick outbreak in my tank because I really do not want to use malachite green in particular. This is known to cause cancer and cancerous mutations in humans, and having already had a cancer scare, I am not about that life. Are there any safer alternatives?
Note: I did end up using medications containing malachite green but am somewhat living in fear at this point.
I have snails and plants that survived the malachite green and EM and general cure I added. But I only used a half dose of malachite green.
You can also try high heat, salt and garlic
Hi. I have a fish with white spots that does not look like ich. It’s just 3 long white spots on the tail. The ich meds have not been helping. What else could it be?
First
+ thank you my fish is having this❤️
I recently went to a big box store looking ichx and they looked at me like I was an evil fishkeeper! They were so snotty and said that they prefer natural treatments over chemicals....
What do they recommend?
Thank you 😊
Thank you thank you
I'm trying to quick cure some new plants by keeping them at 86°F and recently went to 89°F.
How long before all potential ich and velvet parasites are gone??
I have been quarantining for a week now, four days at high temps.
You should of had the kids dressed up as vampires acting it out lol 🤣
Lol, I should have!
Aww, miss you Soundwave
lynn t I was thinking the same thing 😢
Pls do more videos, I can't find any better fish videos other than you and KGTropicals. 😠 BTW, I bought 10 neons and not quarantine them, add them in the community tank with female Bettas, Guppies and Kuhli Loaches. But only my Neons are affected with ICH. Why only them? pH at 6.8, temp 79 and I just did 25% water change using RO + NaCl. Do you think it'll work?
29 gallons. Could I just use 3 teaspoons
Bleach but rinse and rinse and rinse so it doesn’t remain after
Is this ich also known simply as white spots? I had a goldfish a long time ago and it developed white spots and it was a straight forward thing to cure however I don't think they called it ich.
Yup, ich is often called white spot disease. But I've heard that sometimes goldfish get "stress ich" too, which wouldn't react to Ich-X .
@@GirlTalksFish 🐠 interesting.
Yep that's exactly how Cory treats Ich.
my betta had one white spot on his top fin, and the part of the fin that had the white spot was a little ripped. is this ich? I didn't want to take any chances so I put him in a quarantine tank and gave the tank the ich medication drops...and now he doesn't have the white spot but still has the rip in his top fin...does that mean the ich is gone now?? first time betta owner here...
My betta had Ich that I was able to see them clearly, and all I did was raise the temperature just a little bit, maybe it didnt do anything, but it seems that my betta is a real fighter and I shouldn't always rely on him being strong
Nowhere on my bottle of Paragaurd does it say treat for 14 days. As a matter of fact it doesn't say anything about how long to treat the fish. 🤔
My fish has like 4 white spots on his tail. It recently showed up. Is that ich or something else?
